Heavy-quark symmetry as applied to heavy hadron systems implies that their interactions are independent of their heavy-quark spin (heavy-quark spin symmetry) and heavy flavour contents (heavy flavour symmetry). In the molecular hypothesis the $X(3872)$ resonance is a $1^{++}$ $D^*\bar{D}$ bound state. If this is the case, the application of heavy-quark symmetry to a molecular $X(3872)$ suggests the existence of a series of partner states, the most obvious of which is a possible $2^{++}$ $D^*\bar{D}^*$ bound state for which the two-body potential is identical to that of the $1^{++}$ $D^*\bar{D}$ system, the reason being that these two heavy hadron-antihadron states have identical light-spin content. As already discussed in the literature this leads to the prediction of a partner state at $4012\,{\rm MeV}$, at least in the absence of other dynamical effects which might affect the location of this molecule. However the prediction of further heavy-quark symmetry partners cannot be done solely on the basis of symmetry and requires additional information. We propose to use the one boson exchange model to fill this gap, in which case we will be able to predict or discard the existence of other partner states. Besides the isoscalar $2^{++}$ $D^*\bar{D}^*$ bound state, we correctly reproduce the location and quantum numbers of the isovector hidden-bottom $Z_b(10610)$ and $Z_b(10650)$ molecular candidates. We also predict the hidden-bottom $1^{++}$ $B^*\bar{B}^*$ and $2^{++}$ $B^*\bar{B}^*$ partners of the $X(3872)$, in agreement with previous theoretical speculations, plus a series of other states. The isoscalar, doubly charmed $1^+$ $D D^*$ and $D^* D^*$ molecules and their doubly bottomed counterparts are likely to bind, providing a few instances of explicitly exotic systems.
Rates for productions of neutral and doubly charged partners of D_{s0}^+(2317) in B meson decays are studied by using a hard D meson approximation in the infinite momentum frame, and the results are of the same order of magnitude as that of D_{s0}^+(2317). Because the bottom-strange X^{+-}(5568) which can be interpreted as iso-triplet bottom partners of D_{s0}^+(2317) have recently been discovered, observations of neutral and doubly charged partners of D_{s0}^+(2317) are strongly desired.
We study the implications of the heavy-quark spin symmetry for the possible spin partners of the exotic states $Z_b(10610)$ and $Z_b(10650)$ in the spectrum of bottomonium. We formulate and solve numerically the coupled-channel equations for the $Z_b$ states that allow for a dynamical generation of these states as hadronic molecules. The force includes short-range contact terms and the one-pion exchange potential, both treated fully nonperturbatively. The strength of the potential at leading order is fixed completely by the pole positions of the $Z_b$ states such that the mass and the most pro…
We consider the phenomenology at the Large Hadron Collider of new heavy vector-like quarks which couple mainly to the third generation quarks via Yukawa interactions, with special emphasis on non-standard doublet representations which are less constrained from present data. We also discuss in detail the flavour limits at tree level and loop level and implications of a generalised CKM mixing matrix to these cases.
In this work, an Effective Field Theory (EFT) incorporating light SU(3)-flavour and heavy quark spin symmetry is used to describe charmed meson-antimeson bound states. At Lowest Order (LO), this means that only contact range interactions among the heavy meson and antimeson fields are involved. Besides, the isospin violating decays of the X(3872) will be used to constrain the interaction between the $D$ and a $\bar{D}^*$ mesons in the isovector channel. Finally, assuming that the X(3915) and Y(4140) resonances are $D^*\bar{D}^*$ and $D_s^*\bar{D}_s^*$ molecular states, we can determine the four…
We describe a calculation of the spectrum of flavour-SU(3) octet and decuplet baryons, their parity partners, and the radial excitations of these systems, made using a symmetry-preserving treatment of a vector-vector contact interaction as the foundation for the relevant few-body equations. Dynamical chiral symmetry breaking generates nonpointlike diquarks within these baryons and hence, using the contact interaction, flavour-antitriplet scalar, pseudoscalar and vector, and flavour-sextet axial-vector quark-quark correlations can all play an active role. The model yields reasonable masses for …
We revisit the consequences of the heavy-quark spin symmetry for the possible spin partners of the $X(3872)$. We confirm that, if the $X(3872)$ were a $D\bar{D}^*$ molecular state with the quantum numbers $J^{PC}=1^{++}$, then in the strict heavy-quark limit there should exist three more hadronic molecules degenerate with the $X(3872)$, with the quantum numbers $0^{++}$, $1^{+-}$, and $2^{++}$ in line with previous results reported in the literature. We demonstrate that this result is robust with respect to the inclusion of the one-pion exchange interaction between the $D$ mesons. However, thi…
A composite Higgs boson of 125 GeV mass, only mildly fine-tuned, requires top partners with a semi-perturbative coupling and a mass not greater than about a TeV. We analyze the strong constraints on such picture arising from flavour and electroweak precision tests in models of partial compositeness. We consider different representations for the composite fermions and compare the case of an anarchic flavour structure to models with a U(3)^3 and U(2)^3 flavour symmetry. Although non trivially, some models emerge that look capable of accommodating a 125 GeV Higgs boson with top partners in an int…
Chiral symmetry breaking may exhibit significantly different patterns in two chiral limits: N_f=2 massless flavours (m_u=m_d=0, m_s physical) and N_f=3 massless flavours (m_u=m_d=0=m_s=0). Such a difference may arise due to vacuum fluctuations of s-bar{s} pairs related to the violation of the Zweig rule in the scalar sector, and could yield a numerical competition between contributions counted as leading order and next-to-leading in the chiral expansions of observables. We recall and extend Resummed Chiral Perturbation Theory (ReChPT), a framework that we introduced previously to deal with suc…
We study the decoupling process of neutrinos in the early universe in the presence of three-flavour oscillations. The evolution of the neutrino spectra is found by solving the corresponding momentum-dependent kinetic equations for the neutrino density matrix, including for the first time the proper collision integrals for both diagonal and off-diagonal elements. This improved calculation modifies the evolution of the off-diagonal elements of the neutrino density matrix and changes the deviation from equilibrium of the frozen neutrino spectra. However, it does not vary the contribution of neutr…
The top quark can be naturally singled out from other fermions in the Standard Model due to its large mass, of the order of the electroweak scale. We follow this reasoning in models of pseudo Nambu Goldstone Boson composite Higgs, which may derive from an underlying confining dynamics. We consider a new class of flavour models, where the top quark obtains its mass via partial compositeness, while the lighter fermions acquire their masses by a deformation of the dynamics generated at a high flavour scale. One interesting feature of such scenario is that it can avoid all the flavour constraints …
In relation to the newly observed bottom-strange X^{+,-}(5568) mesons, we revisit our tetra-quark interpretation of X(3872) and Z_c(3900). It is discussed that our assignment of X^{+,-}(5568) to charged components of iso-triplet bottom partners of D_{s0}^+(2317) is compatible with the revised version of our tetra-quark interpretation of X(3872) and Z_c(3900).
The Flavour Expansion Theorem, which has been recently proposed as a more general and elegant algebraic method, for the derivation of the commonly used Mass Insertion Approximation, is revisited. The theorem is reviewed, with respect to its straightforward applications in Flavour physics, and compared against the standard diagrammatic flavour basis techniques, in cases where the latter become inadequate.
Very recently we proposed a predictive 2 Higgs Doublet Model with $S_{3}$ flavour symmetry that successfully accounts for fermion masses and mixings. In this letter, motivated by the $750$ GeV Higgs diphoton resonance recently reported by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations, we modify this model by adding exotic top partners with electric charge $\frac{5}{3}$ and a electrically charged scalar singlet. These exotic top partners decay into a charged scalar singlet and the SM up type quarks, whereas the charged scalar singlet will mainly decay into SM up and down type quarks. This simple modificatio…
I reconsider the forward-backward asymmetry for flavoured quarks in electron-positron annihilation. I suggest an infrared-safe definition of this observable, such that the asymmetry may be computed in perturbative QCD with massless quarks. With this definition, the first and second order QCD corrections are computed.
Combining Pati-Salam (PS) and flavour symmetries in a renormalisable setup, we devise a scenario which produces realistic masses for the charged leptons. Flavour-symmetry breaking scalar fields in the adjoint representations of the PS gauge group are responsible for generating different flavour structures for up- and down-type quarks as well as for leptons. The model is characterised by new heavy fermions which mix with the Standard Model quarks and leptons. In particular, the partners for the third fermion generation induce sizeable sources of flavour violation. Focusing on the charged-lepton…
We re-examine the stop co-annihilation scenario of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, wherein a bino-like lightest supersymmetric particle has a thermal relic density set by co-annihilations with a scalar partner of the top quark in the early universe. We concentrate on the case where only the top partner sector is relevant for the cosmology, and other particles are heavy. We discuss the cosmology with focus on low energy parameters and an emphasis on the implications of the measured Higgs boson mass and its properties. We find that the irreducible direct detection signal correlated wi…
The single vector-like top partner hadroproduction in association with top quark in the five and the six-flavour schemes at the LHC is investigated. The inclusive cross section and the differential distributions are evaluated for many benchmark scenarios at leading and next-to-leading orders, both for fixed-order and fixed-order matched to parton shower. The associated Higgs production with a top quark pair, where the final state arises from the decay of the vector-like top partner into a Higgs boson and a top quark, is examined.
The spectrum and dominant strong decay properties of the doubly heavy baryons are revisited by using a chiral effective model with chiral partner structure. By regarding the doubly heavy baryons in the ground states and light angular momentum $j_l = 1/2$ sector of the first orbitally excited states as chiral partners to each other, we estimate the mass splitting of the chiral partners which arises from the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry to be about $430$ MeV for baryons including an unflavored light quark and about $350$ MeV for that including a strange quark. We point out that, simil…
We propose an effective field theory incorporating light SU(3)-flavour and heavy quark spin symmetry to describe charmed meson-antimeson bound states. At lowest order the effective field theory entails a remarkable simplification: it only involves contact range interactions among the heavy meson and antimeson fields. We show that the isospin violating decays of the X(3872) can be used to constraint the interaction between the $D$ and a $\bar{D}^*$ mesons in the isovector channel. As a consequence, we can rule out the existence of a isovector partner of the X(3872). If we additionally assume th…
We construct an extension of the Standard Model (SM) which is based on grand unification with Pati-Salam symmetry. The setup is supplemented with the idea of spontaneous flavour symmetry breaking which is mediated through flavon fields with renormalizable couplings to new heavy fermions. While we argue that the new gauge bosons in this approach can be sufficiently heavy to be irrelevant at low energies, the fermionic partners of the SM quarks, in particular those for the third generation, can be relatively light and provide new sources of flavour violation. The size of the effects is constrain…
After developing in ref.[1] a SU(2)left x U(1) gauge theory for J=0 mesons, I show in the case of two generations that: - the electroweak mass eigenstates differ, especially in the K and D sector, from what they are assumed to be on the basis of a classification by the SU(4) group of flavour; - a new mechanism for CP violation springs out, different from that of the standard model for quarks which requires at least three generations, and I construct a SU(2)left x U(1) gauge invariant Lagrangian which is not invariant by CP.
We first study the hadronic lepton flavor violating tau decays within the littlest Higgs model with T-parity (including one or two pseudoscalars, or a vector resonance). We consider the case where only T-odd particles and partner fermions contribute, and also its extension including Majorana neutrinos coming from an inverse seesaw. In both cases our mean values lie only one order of magnitude below current upper limits, strengthening the case of searching for these decays in the quest for new physics.
We present the results of the gluino and scalar quarks contribution to the flavour changing top quark decay into a charm quark and a photon, gluon or a $Z^0$\ boson within the minimal supersymmetric standard model. We include the mixing of the scalar partners of the left and right handed top quark. This mixing has several effects, the most important of which are to greatly enhance the c Z decay mode for large values of the soft SUSY breaking scalar mass $m_S$\ and to give rise to a GIM--like suppresion in the c $γ$\ mode for certain combinations of parameters.
In this work, we have used an Effective Field Theory (EFT) framework based on Heavy Quark Spin (HQSS), Heavy Flavour (HFS) and Heavy Antiquark-Diquark symmetries (HADS). Using a standard lagrangian for the heavy meson-heavy antimeson system, we fit the counter-terms of the model to predict some promising experimental data that can be interpreted as heavy meson-heavy antimeson molecules, that is, the X(3872) and the $Z_{b}(10610)/Z'_{b}(10650)$. Next, and, taking advantage of HADS, we use the same lagrangian to explore the consequences for heavy meson-doubly heavy baryon molecules, which can al…
The quark-level linear sigma model is revisited, in particular concerning the identification of the f_0(400-1200) (or σ(600)) scalar meson as the chiral partner of the pion. We demonstrate the predictive power of the linear sigma model through the pi-pi and pi-N s-wave scattering lengths, as well as several electromagnetic, weak, and strong decays of pseudoscalar and vector mesons. The ease with which the data for these observables are reproduced in the linear sigma model lends credit to the necessity to include the sigma as a fundamental q\bar{q} degree of freedom, to be contrasted with appro…
Motivated by the very recent measurements performed at the LHCb and the Tevatron of the $B_s^0-\bar B_s^0$ mixing, in this paper we revisit it in a family non-universal $Z^{\prime}$ model, to check if a simultaneous explanation for all the mixing observables, especially for the like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry observed by the D0 collaboration, could be made in such a specific model. In the first scenario where the $Z^\prime$ boson contributes only to the off-diagonal element $M_{12}^s$, it is found that, once the combined constraints from $ΔM_s$, $ϕ_s$ and $ΔΓ_s$ are imposed, the model could …
The physics of exotic hadrons is revisited and reviewed, with emphasis on flavour configurations which have not yet been investigated. The constituent quark model of multiquark states is discussed in some detail, as it can serve as a guide for more elaborate approaches.
We present a detailed and complete calculation of the gluino and scalar quarks contribution to the flavour-changing top quark decay into a charm quark and a photon, gluon, or a Z boson within the minimal supersymmetric standard model including flavour changing gluino-quarks-scalar quarks couplings in the right-handed sector. We compare the results with the ones presented in an earlier paper where we considered flavour changing couplings only in the left-handed sector. We show that these new couplings have important consequences leading to a large enhancement when the mixing of the scalar partn…
The concept of non-abelian horizontal symmetry $SU(3)_H$ can greatly help in understanding the fermion and sfermion flavour structures in supersymmetric grand unification. For the sake of demonstration the $SU(5)\times SU(3)_H$ model, suggested earlier in ref. \cite{PLB85}, is revisited. We show that under very simple and natural assumption it links the sfermion mass pattern to those of fermions in a remarkable way. All dangerous supersymmetric flavour-changing contributions are naturally suppressed in a general case, independently of the concrete texture for fermion mass matrices. Nevertheles…
Prompted by the recent surprising results in QCD spectroscopy, we extend to heavy flavors the hadron mass relations showing that the constituent quark mass differences and ratios have the same values when obtained from mesons and baryons. We obtain several new successful relations involving heavy quarks and provide some related predictions. We discuss in detail the apparent sharp decrease in m_s and m_c, when a light partner quark in a meson is replaced by a heavy one and construct a potential model which qualitatively reproduces this pattern through wave function effects. We apply these ideas…
The BaBar analysis which favours $2^{-+}$ quantum numbers for the X(3872) implies that it may be none other than the 1D2 charmonia state. In that case the isospin breaking in closed flavour modes may be the result of re-scattering from open flavour. However, the observed production cross section in proton-antiproton collisions is much larger than expectations, while the mass of the state, compared to the predictions of a string model, is too high. The 1D2 assignment would imply a 3D2 partner nearby in mass, which may be the X(3875). In the tetraquark interpretation the $2^{-+}$ assignment impl…
We apply the effective field theory definition of Minimal Flavour Violation (MFV) to the MSSM. We explicitly show how, by this definition, the new sources of flavour and CP violation present in the MSSM become functions of the SM Yukawa couplings, and cannot be simply set to zero, as is common wisdom in phenomenological MSSM studies that assume MFV. We apply our approach to the MSSM Delta B = 2 Hamiltonian at low tan(beta). The limit of MFV amounts to a striking increase in the predictivity of the model. In particular, SUSY corrections to meson-antimeson mass differences Delta M(d,s) are alway…
In the simplest examples of models with a discrete quark-lepton symmetry, an electroweak symmetry breaking sector with more than one Higgs doublet is necessary to obtain the correct mass relations between quarks and leptons. A two Higgs doublet model has flavour-nonconserving Yukawa couplings, which are proportional to the masses of the quark-lepton symmetric partners of the fermions. We describe how flavour changing leptonic decays can occur, with branching ratios not far beyond that currently measureable, enabling investigation of the phenomenology of such models.
The dynamics of multiquark binding is revisited in the light of the recent experimental results. It is emphasized that some configurations mixing light and heavy flavours are among the most favourable for stable or metastable multiquarks. The nuclear-physics type of approach predicting the so-called hadron-hadron molecules is compared to direct studies in terms of quark interaction.
We study analytically and numerically the bounds imposed by the electroweak precision tests on a minimal composite Higgs model. The model is based on spontaneous SO(5)/SO(4) breaking, so that an approximate custodial symmetry is preserved. The Higgs arises as a pseudo-Goldstone boson at a scale below the electroweak symmetry breaking scale. We show that one can satisfy the electroweak precision constraints without much fine-tuning. This is the case if the left-handed top quark is fully composite, which gives a mass spectrum within the reach of the LHC. However a composite top quark is strongly…
We construct a scalar dark matter model with $U(1)_{L_μ-L_τ}$ symmetry in which the dark matter interacts with the quark flavours, allowing lepton non-universal $b \to s \ell \bar{\ell}$ decays. The model can solve $b \to s μμ$ ($R_{K^{(*)}}$) anomaly and accommodate the relic abundance of dark matter simultaneously while satisfying the constraints from other low energy flavour experiments and direct detection experiments of dark matter. The new fields include vector-like heavy quarks $U$ and $D$, $U(1)_{L_μ-L_τ}$ breaking scalar $S$, as well as the dark matter candidate $X_I$ and its heavy pa…
We explore the consequences of heavy flavour, heavy quark spin and heavy antiquark-diquark symmetries for hadronic molecules within an effective field theory framework.. Owing to heavy antiquark-diquark symmetry, the doubly heavy baryons have approximately the same light-quark structure as the heavy antimesons. As a consequence, the existence of a heavy meson-antimeson molecule implies the possibility of a partner composed of a heavy meson and a doubly-heavy baryon. In this regard, the D\bar D* molecular nature of the X(3872) will hint at the existence of several baryonic partners with isospin…
The discovery of the Higgs boson raises the question of its "lightness" in mass when the Standard Model is considered as an effective quantum field theory. Supersymmetry is the only currently known symmetry which can protect the Higgs mass while still treating the Higgs as an elementary quantum field. However in the view of null experimental confirmation from both direct (LHC) and indirect searches (flavour, dark matter) of the supersymmetric particles and the constraints from the Higgs mass, several possible heavy spectra for supersymmetric partners have been proposed. In the present thesis, …
In these proceedings we present the results for lepton flavour violating tau and muon decays within the SUSY seesaw scenario. Specifically, we consider the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model extended by three right handed neutrinos, $ν_{R_i}$ and their corresponding SUSY partners, ${\tilde ν}_{R_i}$, ($i=1,2,3$), and use the seesaw mechanism for neutrino mass generation. We include the predictions for the branching ratios of two types of lepton flavour violating channels, $l_j \to ł_i γ$ and $l_j \to 3 l_i$, and compare them with the present bounds and future experimental sensit…
We discuss the range of validity of ChPT when applied to the systems of heavy-light mesons. Having in mind the recent experimental evidence according to which the heavy-light scalar and axial states are closer to the ground states than anticipated, we revisited the prediction for the chiral behavior of the B-Bbar mixing amplitude and examined the impact of nearness of the positive parity states. We conclude that the standard ChPT expressions with Nf=3 light flavours are not useful in guiding the extrapolation of hadronic quantities computed on the lattice. Instead those derived in HMChPT with …
Models of compositeness can successfully address the origin of the Higgs boson, as a pseudo Nambu Goldstone boson (pNGB) of a spontaneously broken global symmetry, and flavour physics via the partial compositeness mechanism. If the dynamics is generated by a confining gauge group with fermionic matter content, there exists only a finite set of models that have the correct properties to account for the Higgs and top partners at the same time. In this letter we explore the theory space of this class of models: remarkably, all of them contain - beyond the pNGB Higgs - a pNGB singlet, $a$, which c…
The complementarity between Chiral Perturbation Theory and the Linear Sigma Model is exploited to study $π^0π^0$ production in $ϕ$ radiative decays, where the effects of the $f_0(980)$ scalar resonance, and those of its more controversial $σ(500)$ partner, should become manifest via the $ϕ\to K^+ K^- (γ)\toπ^0π^0γ$ decay chain. The recently reported data on $ϕ\toπ^0π^0γ$ coming from the VEPP-2M $e^+ e^-$ collider in Novosibirsk and the DA$Φ$NE $ϕ$-factory in Frascati can be reasonably described in our approach, which we propose as a promising first step towards more detailed analyses. The $f_0…
