We present a new census of Galactic and extragalactic symbiotic stars (SySts). This compilation contains 323 known and 87 candidate SySts. Of the confirmed SySts, 257 are Galactic and 66 extragalactic. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 348 sources have been constructed using 2MASS and AllWISE data. Regarding the Galactic SySts, 74% are S-types, 13% D and 3.5% D$^{\prime}$. S-types show an SED peak between 0.8 and 1.7 $μ$m, whereas D-type show a peak at longer wavelengths between 2 and 4 $μ$m. D$^{\prime}$-type, on the other hand, display a nearly flat profile. Gaia distances and effective temperatures are also presented. According to their Gaia distances, S-type are found to be members of both thin and thick Galactic disk populations, while S+IR- and D-types are mainly thin disk sources. Gaia temperatures show a reasonable agreement with the temperatures derived from SEDs within their uncertainties. A new census of the OVI $λ$6830 Raman-scattered line in SySts is also presented. From a sample of 298 SySts with available optical spectra, 55% are found to emit the line. No significant preference is found among the different types. The report of the OVI $λ$6830 Raman-scattered line in non-SySts is also discussed as well as the correlation between the Raman-scattered OVI line and X-ray emission. We conclude that the presence of the OVI Raman-scattered line still provides a strong criterion for identifying a source as a SySt.
V2756 Sgr is a long-known S-type symbiotic binary that was recently detected in $\sim$ 1 mag eclipse-like fading by the Gaia satellite. This behavior was reported as a Gaia Science Alert under the designation Gaia22eor. V2756 Sgr has not been reported as an eclipsing symbiotic system. In this contribution, we have investigated the recent light curves of this target obtained by Gaia and ASAS-SN survey and supplemented these data by the photometry from the ASAS survey and DASCH archive. In addition, low-resolution BP/RP spectra from Gaia were examined. Based on the presented analysis, we conclud…
Symbiotic binaries are putative progenitors of type Ia supernovae. The census of Galactic symbiotic binaries is so incomplete that we cannot reliably estimate the total population of these stars, and use it to check whether that number is consistent with the observed type Ia supernova rate in spiral galaxies. We have thus begun a survey of the nearest counterpart of our own Galaxy, namely M31, where a relatively complete census of symbiotic stars is achievable. We report the first detections and spectrographic characterizations of 35 symbiotic binaries in M31, and compare these stars with the …
Besides the astrometric mission of the Gaia satellite, its repeated and high-precision measurements serve also as an all-sky photometric transient survey. The sudden brightenings of the sources are published as Gaia Photometric Science Alerts and are made publicly available allowing the community to photometrically and spectroscopically follow-up the object. The goal of this paper was to analyze the nature and derive the basic parameters of Gaia18aen, transient detected at the beginning of 2018. It coincides with the position of the emission line star WRAY 15-136. The brightening was classifie…

In this work, we present the discovery and characterization of a new southern S-type symbiotic star, DeGaPe 35. We have obtained the low-resolution spectroscopic observations and supplemented them with photometry from Gaia DR3 and other surveys. The optical spectra of this target show prominent emission lines, including highly ionized [Fe VII] and O VI lines. The cool component of this symbiotic binary is an M4-5 giant with effective temperature ~ 3 380 - 3 470 K and luminosity ~ 3 000 L$_\odot$ (for the adopted distance of 3 kpc). The hot component is a shell-burning white dwarf. The photomet…

SU Lyn, a star that ostensibly appears to be an unremarkable late M type giant, has recently been proposed to be a symbiotic star largely based on its hard X-ray properties. The star does not display, in low-resolution optical spectra, the high excitation lines typically seen in the spectra of symbiotic stars. In the present work, UV, optical, and near-infrared observations are presented, aimed at exploring and strengthening the proposed symbiotic classification for this star. Our Far-UV 1300-1800$Å$ spectrum of SU Lyn, obtained with the ASTROSAT mission's UVIT payload, shows emission lines of…
In the Gaia era, the membership analysis and parameter determination of open clusters (OCs) are more accurate. We performed a census of OC's classical Cepheids based on Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) and obtained a sample of 33 OC Cepheids fulfilling the constraints of the spatial position, proper motion, parallax and evolution state. 13 of 33 OC Cepheids are newly discovered. Among them, CM Sct is the first first-crossing Cepheids with direct evidence of evolution. DP Vel is likely a fourth- or fifth-crossing Cepheids. Based on independent distances from OCs, W_1-band period-luminosity rela…
This paper presents the first census of Galactic post-Asymptotic Giant Branch stars in the HR diagram. We combined Gaia DR3 parallax-based distances with extinction corrected integrated fluxes, and derived luminosities for a sample of 185 stars that had been proposed to be post-AGB stars in the literature. The luminosities allow us to create an HR diagram containing the largest number of post-AGB candidate objects to date. A significant fraction of the objects fall outside the typical luminosity range as covered by theoretical evolutionary post-AGB tracks as well as observed for Planetary Nebu…
The nearest, youngest groups of stars to the Sun provide important samples of age-dated stars for studying circumstellar disk evolution, imaged exoplanets, and brown dwarfs. I briefly comment on the status of the known stellar groups within 100 pc: $β$ Pic, AB Dor, UMa, Car-Near, Tuc-Hor and $β$ Tuc nucleus, Hyades, Col, TW Hya, Car, Coma Ber, 32 Ori, $η$ Cha, and $χ^1$ For. I also discuss some poorly characterized groups and "non-groups." Grades for 2015 of Pass, Satisfactory, or Fail are assigned to the groups for the purposes of age-dating stars and brown dwarfs. I speculate that Tuc-Hor co…
Symbiotic stars are interacting binary systems with the longest orbital periods. They are typically formed by a white dwarf, a red giant and a nebula. These objects are natural astrophysical laboratories for studying the evolution of binaries. Current estimates of the population of Milky Way symbiotic stars vary from 3000 up to 400000. However, the current census is less than 300. The Large sky Area Multi-Object fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) survey can obtain hundreds of thousands of stellar spectra per year, providing a good opportunity to search for new symbiotic stars. In this work…
New Online Database of Symbiotic Variables includes several poorly characterised objects and candidate symbiotic stars, not only in the Milky Way but also in other galaxies. The goal of the research presented in this paper was to reveal the nature of 2MASS J07363415+6538548, the object discovered as an X-ray source in the field of NGC 2403, and tentatively classified as a symbiotic candidate or a cataclysmic variable. By analysis of available photometric data from ground-based surveys, together with high precision photometry from TESS, remarkable astrometric measurements of the Gaia satellite,…
The census of open clusters in the Milky Way is in a never-before seen state of flux. Recent works have reported hundreds of new open clusters thanks to the incredible astrometric quality of the Gaia satellite, but other works have also reported that many open clusters discovered in the pre Gaia era may be associations. We aim to conduct a comparison of clustering algorithms used to detect open clusters, attempting to statistically quantify their strengths and weaknesses by deriving the sensitivity, specificity, and precision of each as well as their true positive rate against a larger sample.…
Corona-Australis is one of the nearest regions to the Sun with recent and ongoing star formation, but the current picture of its stellar (and substellar) content is not complete yet. We take advantage of the second data release of the Gaia space mission to revisit the stellar census and search for additional members of the young stellar association in Corona-Australis. We applied a probabilistic method to infer membership probabilities based on a multidimensional astrometric and photometric data set over a field of 128 deg$^{2}$ around the dark clouds of the region. We identify 313 high-probab…
We have refined the census of stars and brown dwarfs in the Upper Sco association (~10 Myr, ~145 pc) by 1) updating the selection of candidate members from our previous survey to include the high-precision astrometry from the second data release of Gaia, 2) obtaining spectra of a few hundred candidate members to measure their spectral types and verify their youth, and 3) assessing the membership (largely with Gaia astrometry) of 2020 stars toward Upper Sco that show evidence of youth in this work and previous studies. We arrive at a catalog of 1761 objects that are adopted as members of Upper …
Hen 3-160 is reported in Belczynski et al.'s (2000) catalog as a symbiotic binary system with M7 giant donor. Using $V$- and $I$-band photometry collected over 20 years we have found that the giant is a Mira variable pulsating with 242.5-day period. The period-luminosity relation locates Hen 3-160 at the distance of about 9.4 kpc, and its Galactic coordinates ($l=267.7^{\circ}$, $b=-7.9^{\circ}$) place it $\sim$1.3 kpc above the disc. This position combined with relatively high proper motions (pm$_{\rm{RA}}=-1.5$ mas yr$^{-1}$, pm$_{\rm{DEC}}=+2.9$ mas yr$^{-1}$, Gaia DR2) indicates that Hen 3…
The Ophiuchus cloud complex is one of the best laboratories to study the earlier stages of the stellar and protoplanetary disc evolution. The wealth of accurate astrometric measurements contained in the Gaia Data Release 2 can be used to update the census of Ophiuchus member candidates. We seek to find potential new members of Ophiuchus and identify those surrounded by a circumstellar disc. We constructed a control sample composed of 188 bona fide Ophiuchus members. Using this sample as a reference we applied three different density-based machine learning clustering algorithms (DBSCAN, OPTICS,…
A complete census of Blue Horizontal Branch (BHB) and Blue Straggler Star (BSS) population within the 10$'$ radius from the center of the Globular Cluster, NGC 288 is presented, based on the images from the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT). The UV and UV$-$optical Colour-Magnitude Diagrams (CMDs) are constructed by combining the UVIT, HST-ACS and ground data and compared with the BaSTI isochrones generated for UVIT filters. We used stellar proper motions data from GAIA DR2 to select the cluster members. Our estimations of the temperature distribution of 110 BHB stars reveal two peaks with …
Context: The $χ^{1}$ Fornacis cluster (Alessi 13) is one of a few open clusters of its age and distance in the Solar neighbourhood that ought to benefit from more attention as it can serve as a cornerstone for numerous future studies related to star and planet formation. Aims: We take advantage of the early installment of the third data release of the Gaia space mission in combination with archival data and our own observations, to expand the census of cluster members and revisit some properties of the cluster. Methods: We applied a probabilistic method to infer membership probabilities over a…
The Gaia-ESO survey sample of massive OB stars in the Carina Nebula consists of 234 stars. The addition of brighter sources from the Galactic O-Star Spectroscopic Survey and additional sources from the literature allows us to create the most complete census of massive OB stars done so far in the region. It contains a total of 316 stars, being 18 of them in the background and four in the foreground. Of the 294 stellar systems in Car OB1, 74 are of O type, 214 are of non-supergiant B type and 6 are of WR or non-O supergiant (II to Ia) spectral class. We identify 20 spectroscopic binary systems w…
Context: Lupus is recognised as one of the closest star-forming regions, but the lack of trigonometric parallaxes in the pre-Gaia era hampered many studies on the kinematic properties of this region and led to incomplete censuses of its stellar population. Aims: We use the second data release of the Gaia space mission combined with published ancillary radial velocity data to revise the census of stars and investigate the 6D structure of the Lupus complex. Methods: We performed a new membership analysis of the Lupus association based on astrometric and photometric data over a field of 160 deg2 …

We present the results of our photoelectric $UBV$ observations of the yellow symbiotic star LT Del over 2010-2018. The binary system LT Del, which consists of a bright K giant and a compact hot star with a temperature of $\sim$100 000 K, has an orbital period of 476 days. In 2017 the variable experienced a second low-amplitude ($ΔV\sim 0.^{m}7$) outburst in the history of its studies whose maximum occurred at an orbital phase of 0.15$\pm$0.05. The outburst duration was $\sim$60 days. The $B-V$ and $U-B$ colors in the outburst became noticeably bluer. A difference in the photometric behavior of…
I have used high-precision photometry and astrometry from the third data release of Gaia (DR3) to perform a survey for members of the Taurus star-forming region and young associations in its vicinity. This work has produced a new catalog of 532 adopted members of Taurus, which has only minor changes relative to the previous catalog from Esplin & Luhman 2019. I have used the Gaia astrometry to divide the Taurus members into 13 groups that have distinct kinematics. Meanwhile, I have identified 1378 candidate members of seven associations near Taurus. All of these associations have histograms of …

We use photometry and proper motions from Gaia DR2 to determine the blue straggler star (BSS) populations of 16 old (1-10 Gyr), nearby ($d< 3500$ pc) open clusters. We find that the fractional number of BSS compared to RGB stars increases with age, starting near zero at 1 Gyr and flattening to $\sim 0.35$ by 4 Gyr. Fitting stellar evolutionary tracks to these BSS, we find that their mass distribution peaks at a few tenths of a solar mass above the main-sequence turnoff. BSS more than 0.5 $M_\odot$ above the turnoff make up only $\sim25$\% of the sample, and BSS more than 1.0 $M_\odot$ above th…
I have used high-precision photometry and astrometry from the third data release of Gaia (DR3) to identify candidate members of the 32 Ori association. Spectral types and radial velocities have been measured for subsets of the candidates using new and archival spectra. For the candidates that have radial velocity measurements, I have used UVW velocities to further constrain their membership, arriving at a final catalog of 169 candidates. I estimate that the completeness of the survey is ~90% for spectral types of <=M7 (>=0.06 Msun). The histogram of spectral types for the 32 Ori candidates exh…
Constraining stellar and orbital co-evolution through ensemble seismology of solar-like oscillators in binary systems -- A census of oscillating red-giants and main-sequence stars in Gaia DR3 binaries
Context. The second Gaia data release (Gaia DR2) contains high precision positions, parallaxes and proper motions for 1.3 billion sources. The resulting Hertzsprung-Russel diagram reveals fine structures all over the mass range. Aims. This paper aims to investigate the content of Gaia DR2 at the low-mass end and to characterize ultra-cool and brown dwarfs. Methods. We first retrieve the sample of spectroscopically confirmed ultra-cool and brown dwarfs in Gaia DR2. We use their locus in the precise Hertzsprung-Russel diagram to select new candidates, and to investigate their properties. Results…

We report the discovery and characterization of a new symbiotic star of the accreting-only variety, which we observed in the optical/near-infrared (NIR) with VLT/X-Shooter and in the X-rays/ultraviolet with Swift/UVOT+XRT. The new symbiotic star, THA 15-31, was previously described as a pre-main sequence star belonging to the Lupus~3 association. Our observations, ancillary data, and Gaia EDR3 parallax indicate that THA 15-31 is a symbiotic star composed of an M6III red giant and an accreting companion, is subject to E(B-V)=0.38 reddening, and is located at a distance of ~12 kpc and at 1.8 kpc…
The second data release (DR2) of Gaia provides mean photometry in three bands for $\sim$1.4 billion sources, but light curves and variability properties are available for only $\sim$0.5 million of them. Here, we provide a census of large-amplitude variables with amplitudes larger than $\sim$0.2 mag in the $G$ band for objects with mean brightnesses between 5.5 and 19 mag. To achieve this, we rely on variability amplitude proxies in $G$, $G_{BP}$ and $G_{RP}$ computed from the uncertainties on the magnitudes published in DR2. We then apply successive filters to identify two subsets containing r…
We present an extensive search in the literature and Gaia DR2 for visual co-moving binary companions to stars hosting exoplanets and brown dwarfs within 200 pc. We found 218 planet hosts out of 938 to be part of multiple-star systems, with 10 newly discovered binaries and 2 new tertiary stellar components. This represents an overall raw multiplicity rate of 23.2$\pm$1.6% for hosts to exoplanets across all spectral types, with multi-planet systems found to have a lower duplicity frequency at the 2.2$σ$ level. We found that more massive hosts are more often in binary configurations, and that pla…
Identifying the young optically visible population in a star-forming region is essential for fully understanding the star formation event. In this paper, We identify 211 candidate members of the Perseus molecular cloud based on Gaia astronomy. We use LAMOST spectra to confirm that 51 of these candidates are new members, bringing the total census of known members to 856. The newly confirmed members are less extincted than previously known members. Two new stellar aggregates are identified in our updated census. With the updated member list, we obtain a statistically significant distance gradien…
We have identified a first group of 33 new candidates for symbiotic stars (SySt) of the accreting-only variety among the 600,255 stars so far observed by the GALAH high-resolution spectroscopic survey of the Southern Hemisphere, more than doubling the number of those previously known. GALAH aims to high latitudes and this offers the possibility to sound the Galaxy for new SySt away from the usual Plane and Bulge hunting regions. In this paper we focus on SySt of the M spectral type, showing an Halpha emission with a peak in excess of 0.5 above the adjacent continuum level, and not affected by …
Symbiotic stars show emission across the electromagnetic spectrum from a wide array of physical processes. At cm-waves both synchrotron and thermal emission is seen, often highly variable and associated with outbursts in the optical and X-rays. Most models of the radio emission include an ionized region within the dense wind of the red giant star, that is kept ionized by activity on the white dwarf companion or its accretion disk. In some cases there is on-going shell burning on the white dwarf due to its high mass accretion rate or a prior nova eruption, in other cases nuclear fusion occurs o…
Symbiotic stars are interacting binaries with the longest orbital periods and their multi-component structure makes them rich astrophysical laboratories. The accretion of a high mass loss rate red giant wind on to a white dwarf (WD) makes them promising Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) progenitors. Systematic surveys for new Galactic symbiotic stars are critical to identify new promising SNe Ia progenitors (e.g. RS Oph) and to better estimate the total population size to compare against SNe Ia rates. Central to the latter objective is building a complete census of symbiotic stars towards the Galact…
We present the discovery of 255 binary and six multiple system candidates with wide > 5" separation composed by ultracool dwarfs companions to stars, plus nine double ultracool dwarf systems. These systems were selected based on common distance criteria. About 90% of the total sample has proper motions available and 73% of the systems also satisfy a common proper motion criterion. The sample of ultracool candidates was taken from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and the candidate stellar primaries are from Gaia DR2 and DES data. We compute chance alignment probabilities in order to assess the phys…
The nearest stars provide a fundamental constraint for our understanding of stellar physics and the Galaxy. The nearby sample serves as an anchor where all objects can be seen and understood with precise data. This work is triggered by the most recent data release of the astrometric space mission Gaia and uses its unprecedented high precision parallax measurements to review the census of objects within 10 pc. The first aim of this work was to compile all stars and brown dwarfs within 10 pc observable by Gaia, and compare it with the Gaia Catalogue of Nearby Stars as a quality assurance test. W…
In order to assess the multiplicity statistics of stars across spectral types and populations in a volume-limited sample, we censused nearby stars for companions with Robo-AO. We report on observations of 1157 stars of all spectral types within 25 pc with decl. $>-13^{\circ}$ searching for tight companions. We detected 154 companion candidates with separations ranging from $\sim$0.15$''$ to 4.0$''$ and magnitude differences up to $Δ$m$_{\textit{i'}}\le$7 using the robotic adaptive optics instrument Robo-AO. We confirmed physical association from Gaia EDR3 astrometry for 53 of the companion can…
We have monitored a 3 deg2 area toward Serpens Main in the Pan-STARRS1 r, i, and z bands from 2016 April to September. Light curves of more than 11,000 stars in each band were obtained, and 143 variables have been identified. Among those, 119 variables are new discoveries, while 24 variables were previously known. We present variability classes and periods of 99 stars. Of these, 81 are located in the upper giant branch, displaying long periods, while the remaining 18 variables are pre-main-sequence objects with short periods. We also identify eight eclipsing binary systems, including the known…
The latest Gaia Data Release 3 provides an opportunity to expand the census of Galactic open clusters harboring classical Cepheid variables, thereby bolstering the cosmic distance scale. A comprehensive analysis yielded a total of 50 classical Cepheids associated with 45 open clusters, of which 39 open cluster-classical Cepheid pairs are considered probable, with the remaining 11 pairs considered improbable but worth following up. Two previously identified clusters by us possibly host classical Cepheids (OC-0125/V1788 Cyg and OC-0675/OGLE-BLG-CEP-114). In addition, we identify 38 new open clus…
Context: Chamaeleon is the southernmost low-mass star-forming complex within 200 pc from the Sun. Its stellar population has been extensively studied in the past, but the current census of the stellar content is not complete yet and deserves further investigation. Aims: We take advantage of the second data release of the \textit{Gaia} space mission to expand the census of stars in Chamaeleon and to revisit the properties of the stellar populations associated to the Chamaeleon I (Cha I) and Chamaeleon II (Cha II) dark clouds. Methods: We perform a membership analysis of the sources in the \text…
We have performed a census of the young stellar populations near the Corona Australis molecular cloud using photometric and kinematic data from several sources, particularly Gaia EDR3, and spectroscopy of hundreds of candidate members. We have compiled a catalog of 393 members of Corona Australis, (39 at >M6), 293 (36) of which are spectroscopically classified for the first time in this work. We find that Corona Australis can be described in terms of two stellar populations, a younger one (few Myr) that is partially embedded in the cloud (the Coronet Cluster) and an older one (~15 Myr) that su…
