New physics in the neutrino sector might be necessary to address anomalies between different neutrino oscillation experiments. Intriguingly, it also offers a possible solution to the discrepant cosmological measurements of $H_0$ and $σ_8$. We show here that delaying the onset of neutrino free-streaming until close to the epoch of matter-radiation equality can naturally accommodate a larger value for the Hubble constant $H_0=72.3 \pm 1.4$ km/s/Mpc and a lower value of the matter fluctuations $σ_8=0.786\pm 0.020$, while not degrading the fit to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) damping tail. We achieve this by introducing neutrino self-interactions in the presence of a non-vanishing sum of neutrino masses. This strongly interacting neutrino cosmology prefers $N_{\rm eff} = 4.02 \pm 0.29$, which has interesting implications for particle model-building and neutrino oscillation anomalies. We show that the absence of the neutrino free-streaming phase shift on the CMB can be compensated by shifting the value of other cosmological parameters, hence providing an important caveat to the detections made in the literature. Due to their impact on the evolution of the gravitational potential at early times, self-interacting neutrinos and their subsequent decoupling leave a rich structure on the matter power spectrum. In particular, we point out the existence of a novel localized feature appearing on scales entering the horizon at the onset of neutrino free-streaming. While the interacting neutrino cosmology provides a better global fit to current cosmological data, we find that traditional Bayesian analyses penalize the model as compared to the standard cosmological. Our analysis shows that it is possible to find radically different cosmological models that nonetheless provide excellent fits to the data, hence providing an impetus to thoroughly explore alternate cosmological scenarios.
Sterile neutrinos with a mass in the eV range have been invoked as a possible explanation of a variety of short baseline (SBL) neutrino oscillation anomalies. However, if one considers neutrino oscillations between active and sterile neutrinos, such neutrinos would have been fully thermalised in the early universe, and would be therefore in strong conflict with cosmological bounds. In this study we first update cosmological bounds on the mass and energy density of eV-scale sterile neutrinos. We then perform an updated study of a previously proposed model in which the sterile neutrino couples t…
Early Dark Energy (EDE) contributing a fraction $f_{\rm EDE}(z_c)\sim 10 \%$ of the energy density of the universe around $z_c\simeq 3500$ and diluting as or faster than radiation afterwards, can provide a resolution to the Hubble tension, the $\sim 5σ$ discrepancy between the $H_0$ value derived from early- and late-universe observations within $Λ$CDM. However, it has been pointed out that Large-Scale Structure (LSS) data, which are in $\sim3σ$ tension with $Λ$CDM and EDE cosmologies, might alter these conclusions. We reassess the viability of the EDE against a host of high- and low-redshift …
The Hubble tension between the $Λ$CDM-model-dependent prediction of the current expansion rate $H_0$ using Planck data and direct, model-independent measurements in the local universe from the SH0ES collaboration disagree at $>3.5σ$. Moreover, there exists a milder $\sim 2σ$ tension between similar predictions for the amplitude $S_8$ of matter fluctuations and its measurement in the local universe. As explanations relying on unresolved systematics have not been found, theorists have been exploring explanations for these anomalies that modify the cosmological model, altering early-universe-base…
We examine the consistency of light dark matter (DM) elastic scattering in CoGeNT, DAMA, and CDMS-Silicon in light of constraints from XENON, CDMS, LUX, PICASSO and COUPP. We consider a variety of operators that have been employed to reconcile anomalies with constraints, including anapole, magnetic dipole, momentum-dependent, and isospin-violating DM. We find that elastic scattering through these alternative operators does not substantially reduce the tension between the signals and the null constraints for operators where at least two of the three purported signals map onto a common space in …
Acoustic peaks in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature spectrum as observed by the Planck satellite appear to be smoother than our expectation from the standard model lensing effect. This anomalous effect can be also mimicked by a spatially closed Universe with a very low value of Hubble constant that consequently aggravates the already existing discordance between cosmological observations. We reconstruct a signature from the early Universe, a particular form of oscillation in the primordial spectrum of quantum fluctuations with a characteristic frequency, that solves all these a…
Anomalies in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) refer to features that have been observed, mostly at large angular scales, and which show some tension with the statistical predictions of the standard $Λ$CDM model. In this work, we focus our attention on power suppression, dipolar modulation, a preference for odd parity, and the tension in the lensing parameter $A_L$. Though the statistical significance of each individual anomaly is inconclusive, collectively they are significant, and could indicate new physics beyond the $Λ$CDM model. In this article, we present a brief, but pedagogical int…
Evidence continues to grow in the MiniBooNE (MB) antineutrino mode supporting a low-energy excess compatible with the MB neutrino mode and possibly also confirming the results of the LSND experiment. At least one sterile neutrino is required to explain the anomalies consistent with the observations of other experiments. At the same time, there is a strong tension between the positive signals of LSND and MB and the null results of nu_e and nu_mu disappearance experiments. We explore a scenario, first proposed in \cite{Nelson:2010hz}, where the presence of an additional heavy sterile neutrino (w…
In this paper we apply the symmetry principle in order to search for an alternative unified explanation of several cosmological puzzles such as the present stage of accelerated expansion of the Universe and the Hubble tension issue, among others. We argue that Weyl gauge symmetry, being a manifest symmetry of gauge invariant theories of gravity operating on Weyl integrable geometry spacetimes, may be an actual (unbroken) symmetry of our present Universe. This symmetry may be at the core of a phenomenologically feasible explanation of modern fundamental issues arising within the framework of ge…
In this paper we will list a few important goals that need to be addressed in the next decade, also taking into account the current discordances between the different cosmological probes, such as the disagreement in the value of the Hubble constant $H_0$, the $σ_8$--$S_8$ tension, and other less statistically significant anomalies. While these discordances can still be in part the result of systematic errors, their persistence after several years of accurate analysis strongly hints at cracks in the standard cosmological scenario and the necessity for new physics or generalisations beyond the s…
Motivated by the recent anomalies in $b\rightarrow s$ transitions that emerged at LHCb, we consider a model with an $L_μ- L_τ$ gauge symmetry and additional vector-like fermions. We find that by introducing supersymmetry the model can be made consistent with the long-standing deviation in the measured value of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $g-2$, and neutralino dark matter of broad mass ranges and properties. In particular, dark matter candidates include the well-known 1 TeV higgsino, which in the MSSM is typically not compatible with solutions to the $g-2$ puzzle. Moreover, its s…
Minimal dark energy models, described by the same number of free parameters of the standard cosmological model with cold dark matter plus a cosmological constant to parameterize the dark energy component, constitute very appealing scenarios which may solve long-standing, pending tensions. On the one hand, they alleviate significantly the tension between cosmological observations and the presence of one sterile neutrino motivated by the short-baseline anomalies: we obtain a $95\%$ CL cosmological bound on the mass of a fully thermalized fourth sterile neutrino ($N_{\rm eff}=4$) equal to $m_s<0.…
We present a simple extension of the Standard Model that leads to renormalizable long-range vector-mediated neutrino self-interactions. This model can resolve the Hubble tension by delaying the onset of neutrino free-streaming during recombination, without conflicting with other measurements. The extended gauge, scalar and neutrino sectors lead to observable signatures, including invisible Higgs and $Z$ decays, thereby relating the Hubble tension to precision measurements at the LHC and future colliders. The model has a new neutrinophilic gauge boson with $m_{Z'}\sim\mathcal{O}(10~\mathrm{eV})…
Despite the astonishing success of standard $Λ$CDM cosmology, there is mounting evidence for a tension with observations at small and intermediate scales. We introduce a simple model where both cold dark matter (DM) and sterile neutrinos are charged under a new $U(1)_X$ gauge interaction. The resulting DM self-interactions resolve the tension with the observed abundances and internal density structures of dwarf galaxies. At the ame time, the sterile neutrinos can account for both the small hot DM component favored by cosmological observations and the neutrino anomalies found in short-baseline …
The cosmological constant puzzle, traditionally viewed as a naturalness problem, is evidently nullified by the $S$-matrix formulation of quantum gravity/string theory. We point out an implication of this fact for another naturalness puzzle, the Hierarchy Problem between the weak and Planck scales. By eliminating the landscape of de Sitter vacua and eternal inflation, the $S$-matrix formulation exhibits an obvious tension with the explanations based on anthropic selection or cosmological relaxation of the Higgs mass. This sharpens the Hierarchy Problem in a profound way. On one hand, it strengt…
Persistent excesses in the spectra of gamma rays from the galactic center and cosmic ray antiprotons can be explained by dark matter of mass $50\sim 65$\,GeV annihilating into $b$ quarks, but this is typically hard to reconcile with direct detection constraints. We resolve this tension using a simple class of models, where dark matter is a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson, having naturally momentum-suppressed couplings to nuclei. Exploring the parameter space of the model, we find that it can explain the cosmic ray anomalies while remaining compatible with constraints from the relic abundance and …

The vacuum expectation value $v_s$ of a Higgs triplet field $Δ$ carrying two units of lepton number $L$ induces neutrino masses $\propto v_s$. The neutral component of $Δ$ gives rise to two Higgs particles, a pseudoscalar $A$ and a scalar $S$. The most general renormalizable Higgs potential $V$ for $Δ$ and the Standard-Model Higgs doublet $Φ$ does not permit the possibility that the mass of either $A$ or $S$ is small, of order $v_s$, while the other mass is heavy enough to forbid the decay $Z\to A S$ to comply with LEP 1 data. We present a model with additional dimension-6 terms in $V$, in whi…
We explore the dark matter interpretation of the anomalies claimed by the DAMA and CoGeNT experiments, in conjunction with the various null direct-detection experiments. An independent analysis of the CoGeNT data is employed and several experimental and astrophysical uncertainties are considered. Various phenomenological models are studied, including isospin violating interactions, momentum-dependent form factors, velocity-dependent form factors, inelastic scatterings (endothermic and exothermic) and channeling. We find that the severe tension between the anomalies and the null results can be …
A dark energy model (DE) is proposed based on Ginzburg-Landau theory of phase transition (GLT). This model, GLTofDE, surprisingly provides a framework to study not only temporal tensions in cosmology e.g. $H_0$ tension but also spatial anomalies of CMB e.g. the hemispherical power asymmetry and quadrupole-octopole alignment. In the mean field (or Landau) approximation of GLTofDE, there is a spontaneously symmetry breaking exactly like the Higgs potential. We modeled this transition, phenomenologically, and showed that GLTofDE can resolve both the $H_0$ tension and Lyman-$α$ anomaly in a non-tr…
