It is known that de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley (dRGT) massive gravity does not permit a homogeneous and isotropic universe with flat or spherical spatial metrics. We demonstrate that a singular reference metric solves this problem in an economic and straightforward way. In the dRGT massive gravity with a singular reference metric, there are sound homogeneous and isotropic cosmological solutions. We investigate cosmologies with the static and dynamical singular reference metrics, respectively. The term like dark energy appears naturally and the universe accelerates itself in some late time evolution. The term simulating dark matter also naturally emerges. We make a preliminary constraint on the parameters in the dRGT massive gravity in frame of the present cosmological model by using the data of supernovae, cosmic microwave back ground radiations, and baryonic acoustic oscillations.
We consider an ensemble of closed strings in a compact space with stable one cycles and compute the speed of sound resulting from string thermodynamics. Possible applications to the issue of Jeans instability in string gas cosmology are mentioned.
We extend the matter bounce scenario to a more general theory in which the background dynamics and cosmological perturbations are generated by a $k$-essence scalar field with an arbitrary sound speed. When the sound speed is small, the curvature perturbation is enhanced, and the tensor-to-scalar ratio, which is excessively large in the original model, can be sufficiently suppressed to be consistent with observational bounds. Then, we study the primordial three-point correlation function generated during the matter-dominated contraction stage and find that it only depends on the sound speed par…
We study perturbations around some cosmological backgrounds in the dRGT theory of massive gravity. We develop a general formalism to calculate the perturbations around any background. We derive the Lagrangian for fluctuations in the small scale limit, and for the open FRW solution we repeat the analysis around the full background. We find that the perturbations display similar properties: the longitudinal modes of the massive graviton are instantaneous at quadratic level, but they acquire a time-kinetic term at cubic order.
Massive gravity in the presence of doubly coupled matter field via en effective composite metric yields an accelerated expansion of the universe. It has been recently shown that the model admits stable de Sitter attractor solutions and could be used as a dark energy model. In this work, we perform a first analysis of the constraints imposed by the SNIa, BAO and CMB data on the massive gravity model with the effective composite metric and show that all the background observations are mutually compatible at the one sigma level with the model.
We present a thorough analysis of the cosmological perturbations in Generalised Massive Gravity. This is an extension of de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley theory where the translation invariance in the Stückelberg field space is broken. This allows the mass parameters to be promoted to functions of the Stückelberg fields. We consider an exact cosmological background in this theory and study the stability of perturbations. We derive conditions to avoid ghost, gradient and tachyonic instability. The cosmology is an extension of the self-accelerating branch of the constant mass parameter theory, but now a…
An intriguing possibility that can address pathologies in both early universe cosmology (i.e. the horizon problem) and quantum gravity (i.e. non-renormalizability), is that particles at very high energies and/or temperatures could propagate arbitrarily fast. A concrete realization of this possibility for the early universe is the Tachyacoustic (or Speedy Sound) cosmology, which could also produce a scale-invariant spectrum for scalar cosmological perturbations. Here, we study Thermal Tachyacoustic Cosmology (TTC), i.e. this scenario with thermal initial conditions. We find that a phase transit…
In this paper, we scrutinize very closely the cosmology in the proxy theory to massive gravity obtained in Phys. Rev. D84 (2011) 043503. This proxy theory was constructed by covariantizing the decoupling limit Lagrangian of massive gravity and represents a subclass of Horndeski scalar-tensor theory. Thus, this covariantization unifies two important classes of modified gravity theories, namely massive gravity and Horndeski theories. We go beyond the regime which was studied in Phys. Rev. D84 (2011) 043503 and show that the theory does not admit any homogeneous and isotropic self-accelerated sol…
We investigate non-singular bounce and cyclic cosmological evolutions in a universe governed by the extended nonlinear massive gravity, in which the graviton mass is promoted to a scalar-field potential. The extra freedom of the theory can lead to certain energy conditions violations and drive cyclicity with two different mechanisms: either with a suitably chosen scalar-field potential under a given Stuckelberg-scalar function, or with a suitably chosen Stuckelberg-scalar function under a given scalar-field potential. Our analysis shows that extended nonlinear massive gravity can alter signifi…
We study the third quantized formulation of the massive inflaton quantum cosmology for the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe. The Hamiltonian is equivalent to an infinite number of coupled oscillators whose couplings and frequencies are intrinsic time-dependent. We propose the invariant operators whose eigenstates provide the exact wave functions of the universe.
We investigate the cosmology of SO(3)-invariant massive gravity with 5 degrees of freedom. In contrast with previous studies, we allow for a non-trivial fiducial metric, which can be justified by invoking, for example, a dilaton-like global symmetry. We write the homogeneous and isotropic equations of motion in this more general setup and identify, in particular, de Sitter solutions. We then study the linear perturbations around the homogeneous cosmological solutions, by deriving the quadratic Lagrangian governing the dynamics of scalar, vector and tensor modes. We thus obtain the conditions f…
We argue that more cosmological solutions in massive gravity can be obtained if the metric tensor and the tensor $Σ_{μν}$ defined by Stückelberg fields take the homogeneous and isotropic form. The standard cosmology with matter and radiation dominations in the past can be recovered and $Λ$CDM model is easily obtained. The dynamical evolution of the universe is modified at very early times.
We study the cosmology of general massive gravity theories with five propagating degrees of freedom. This large class of theories includes both the case with a residual Lorentz invariance as the cases with simpler rotational invariance. We find that the existence of a nontrivial homogeneous FRW background, in addition to selecting the lorentz-breaking case, implies in general that perturbations around strict Minkowski or dS space are strongly coupled. The result is that dark energy can be naturally accounted for in massive gravity but its equation of state w_eff has to deviate from -1. We find…
This paper is dedicated to scrutinizing the cosmology in massive gravity. A matter field of the dark sector is coupled to an effective composite metric while a standard matter field couples to the dynamical metric in the usual way. For this purpose, we study the dynamical system of cosmological solutions by using phase analysis, which provides an overview of the class of cosmological solutions in this setup. This also permits us to study the critical points of the cosmological equations together with their stability. We show the presence of stable attractor de Sitter critical points relevant t…
Massive bigravity models are interesting alternatives to standard cosmology. In most cases, however, these models have been studied for a simplified scenario in which both metrics take homogeneous and isotropic forms [Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW)] with the same spatial curvatures. The interest to consider more general geometries arises, in particular, in view of the difficulty so far encountered in building stable cosmological solutions with homogeneous and isotropic metrics. Here we consider a number of cases in which the two metrics take more general forms, namely FLRW with dif…
In the Hamiltonian language we provide a study of flat-space cosmology in bigravity and massive gravity constructed mostly with de Rham, Gabadadze, Tolley (dRGT) potential. It is demonstrated that the Hamiltonian methods are powerful not only in proving the absence of the Boulware-Deser ghost, but also in solving other problems. The purpose of this work is to give an introduction both to the Hamiltonian formalism and to the cosmology of bigravity. We sketch three roads to the Hamiltonian of bigravity with the dRGT potential: the metric, the tetrad and the minisuperspace approaches.
We introduce the Brans-Dick de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley massive gravity theory which is the new extension of nonlinear massive gravity. We demonstrate a detailed study of the cosmological properties of this theory of gravity, and we show the transformation of the Jordan frame to the Einstein frame. We obtain the cosmological background equations and show the analyses of self-accelerating solutions for explaining the accelerated expansion of the Universe. In the following, we analyze the background perturbations, which consist of tensor, vector, and scalar perturbations within the framework of the…
We covariantize the decoupling limit of massive gravity proposed in arXiv:1011.1232 and study the cosmology of this theory as a proxy, which embodies key features of the fully non-linear covariant theory. We first confirm that it exhibits a self-accelerating solution, similar to what has been found in arXiv:1010.1780, where the Hubble parameter corresponds to the graviton mass. For a certain range of parameters fluctuations relative to the self-accelerating background are stable and form an attractor solution. We also show that a degravitating solution can not be constructed in this covarianti…
As massive gravity and its extensions offer physically well-defined gravitational theories with a nonzero graviton mass, we present a new extension of the de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley (dRGT)massive gravity, which is tachyonic massive gravity theory. We firstly introduce the new extension of the dRGT massive gravity, constructed by adding a tachyonic term. We then find the cosmological background equations, and present the analysis of self-accelerating solutions. We examine the tensor perturbations to calculate the dispersion relation of gravitational waves (GWs). In a special case, we consider a c…
The theory of nonlinear massive gravity can be extended into the F(R) form as developed in Phys.Rev.D90, 064051 (2014). Being free of the Boulware-Deser ghost, such a construction has the additional advantage of exhibiting no linear instabilities around a cosmological background. We investigate various cosmological evolutions of a universe governed by this generalized massive gravitational theory. Specifically, under the Starobinsky ansantz, this model provides a unified description of the cosmological history, from early-time inflation to late-time self-acceleration. Moreover, under viable F(…
We consider an alternative to inflation for the generation of superhorizon perturbations in the universe in which the speed of sound is faster than the speed of light. We label such cosmologies, first proposed by Armendariz-Picon, {\it tachyacoustic}, and explicitly construct examples of non-canonical Lagrangians which have superluminal sound speed, but which are causally self-consistent. Such models possess two horizons, a Hubble horizon and an acoustic horizon, which have independent dynamics. Even in a decelerating (non-inflationary) background, a nearly scale-invariant spectrum of perturba…
In this paper, we study $F(R)$ gravity by Hu-Sawicki model in Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) background. The Friedmann equations are calculated by modified gravity action, and then the obtained Friedmann equations are written in terms of standard Friedmann equations. Next behavior of bouncing cosmology is investigated in the modified gravity model, i.e., this behavior can solve problem of non-singular in standard Big Bang cosmology. We plot the cosmological parameters in terms of cosmic time and then bouncing condition is investigated. In what follows, we reconstruct the modified…
We study cosmological evolutions of the generalized model of nonlinear massive gravity in which the graviton mass is given by a rolling scalar field and is varying along time. By performing dynamical analysis, we derive the critical points of this system and study their stabilities. These critical points can be classified into two categories depending on whether they are identical with the traditional ones obtained in General Relativity. We discuss the cosmological implication of relevant critical points.
We study FRW homogeneous cosmological solutions in the recently found ghost free massive gravity. In previous works it was shown that when the additional extra metric, needed to generate the mass term, is taken as non-dynamical and flat, no homogeneous FRW cosmology exists. We show that, when the additional metric is a dynamical field, a perfectly safe FRW universe exists. FRW solutions fall in two branches. In the first branch the massive deformation is equivalent to an effectively generated cosmological constant whose scale is determined by the graviton mass. The second branch is quite rich:…
We study cosmological perturbations for a ghost free massive gravity theory formulated with a dynamical extra metric that is needed to massive deform GR. In this formulation FRW background solutions fall in two branches. In the dynamics of perturbations around the first branch solutions, no extra degree of freedom with respect to GR ispresent at linearized level, likewise what is found in the Stuckelberg formulation of massive gravity where the extra metric isflat and non dynamical. In the first branch, perturbations are probably strongly coupled. On the contrary, for perturbations around the …
We study the first cosmological implications of the mimetic theory of massive gravity recently proposed by Chamseddine and Mukhanov. This is a novel theory of ghost-free massive gravity which additionally contains a mimetic dark matter component. In an echo of other modified gravity theories, there are self-accelerating solutions which contain a ghost instability. In the ghost-free region of parameter space, the effect of the graviton mass on the cosmic expansion history amounts to an effective negative cosmological constant, a radiation component, and a negative curvature term. This allows us…
I introduce (Extended) Proca-Nuevo, a non-linear theory of a massive spin-1 field enjoying a non-linearly realized constraint. I will provide a covariantization scheme that allows for consistent, ghost-free cosmological solutions, describing the correct number of dynamical variables in the presence of perfect fluid matter. I will finally exhibit explicit hot Big Bang solutions featuring a late-time self-accelerating epoch, where all the stability and subluminality conditions are satisfied and where gravitational waves behave precisely as in General Relativity.
We present a review of cosmological solutions in non-linear massive gravity, focusing on the stability of perturbations. Although homogeneous and isotropic solutions have been found, these are now known to suffer from either Higuchi ghost or a new non-linear ghost instability. We discuss two approaches to alleviate this issue. By relaxing the symmetry of the background by e.g. breaking isotropy in the hidden sector, it is possible to accommodate a stable cosmological solution. Alternatively, extending the theory to allow for new dynamical degrees of freedom can also remove the conditions which…
Flat Space Cosmology (FSC) spacetimes are exact solutions of 3D gravity theories. In this work, we study phase transition between FSC spacetimes and Hot Flat Spacetimes (HFS) in general minimal massive gravity and exotic general massive gravity. We show that similar to topological massive gravity the tunneling occurs between two spacetimes by comparing their free energies. We also obtain the corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, and its effect on the phase transition is studied.
We extend the disformal transformation to models with two scalar fields and look at its singular limit. Solving the eigentensor equation for the Jacobian of the transformation of the metrics we find the two-field extension of the mimetic scenario in the singular conformal limit. At the background level the setup mimics the roles of dark matter cosmology. We decompose the perturbations into the adiabatic and entropy modes in which the adiabatic perturbation is tangential to the classical trajectory while the entropy mode is perpendicular to it. We show that the adiabatic mode is frozen while th…
We study massive spin-1/2 fermion production in nonsingular superstring cosmology, taking into account one-loop quantum corrections to a superstring effective action with dilaton and modulus fields. While no creation occurs in the massless limit, massive fermions can be produced by the existence of a time-dependent frequency. Due to the increase of the Hubble expansion rate during the modulus-driven phase, the occupation of number of fermions continues to grow until the point of the graceful exit, after which fermion creation ceases with the decrease of the Hubble rate.
The total red shift $z$ might be recast as a combination of the expansion red shift and a static shift due to the energy-momentum tensor non-conservation of a photon propagating through Electro-Magnetic (EM) fields. If massive, the photon may be described by the de Broglie-Proca (dBP) theory which satisfies the Lorentz(-Poincaré) Symmetry (LoSy) but not gauge-invariance. The latter is regained in the Standard-Model Extension (SME), associated with LoSy Violation (LSV) that naturally dresses photons of a mass. The non-conservation stems from the vacuum expectation value of the vector and tensor…
Applying Clausius relation with energy-supply defined by the unified first law of thermodynamics formalism to the apparent horizon of a massive cosmological model proposed lately, the corrected entropic formula of the apparent horizon is obtained with the help of the modified Friedmann equations. This entropy-area relation, together with the identified internal energy, verifies the first law of thermodynamics for the apparent horizon with a volume change term for consistency. On the other hand, by means of the corrected entropy-area formula and the Clausius relation $δQ=T dS$, the modified Fri…
In this paper we find the cosmological solutions of the massive conformal gravity field equations in the presence of matter fields. In particular, we show that the solution of negative curvature is in good agreement with the late universe.
In this article we give a brief review of the fundamental physics that can be done with the future space-based gravitational wave detector LISA. This includes detection of gravitational wave bursts coming from cosmic strings, measuring a stochastic gravitational wave background, mapping spacetime around massive compact objects in galactic nuclei with extreme-mass-ratio inspirals and testing the predictions of General Relativity for the strong dynamical fields of inspiralling binaries. We give particular attention to new results which show the capability of LISA to constrain cosmological parame…
Perturbative $α'$ corrections to the low energy string effective action have been recently found to have a potentially regularizing effect on the singularity of the lowest order pre-big-bang solutions. Whether they actually regularize it, however, cannot be determined working at any finite order in a perturbative expansion in powers of the string constant $α'$, because of scheme dependence ambiguities. Physically, these corrections are dominated by the integration over the first few massive string states. Very massive string modes, instead, can have a regularizing effect which is non-perturbat…
Rather than obtaining cosmic acceleration with a scalar field potential (quintessence) or noncanonical kinetic term (k-essence), we can do it purely through a modified gravity braiding of the scalar and metric, i.e. the $G_3$ Horndeski action term. Such "Horndessence" allows an exact $Λ$CDM cosmological expansion without any cosmological constant, and by requiring shift symmetry we can derive the exact form of $G_3$. We find that this route of deriving $G_3(X)$ leads to a functional form far from the usual simple assumptions such as a power law. Horndessence without any kinetic term or potenti…
One of the fundamental open questions in cosmology is whether we can regard the universe evolution without singularity like a Big Bang or a Big Rip. This challenging subject stimulates one to regard a nonsingular universe in the far past with an arbitrarily large vacuum energy. Considering the high energy regime in the cosmic history, it is believed that Einstein gravity should be corrected to an effective energy dependent theory which could be acquired by gravity's rainbow. On the other hand, employing massive gravity provided us with solutions to some of the long standing fundamental problem…
In a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) space-time background we study the classical cosmological models in the context of recently proposed theory of nonlinear minimal massive bigravity. We show that in the presence of perfect fluid the classical field equations acquire contribution from the massive graviton as a cosmological term which is positive or negative depending on the dynamical competition between two scale factors of bigravity metrics. We obtain the classical field equations for flat and open universes in the ordinary and Schutz representation of perfect fluid. Focusing on the Schutz …
We introduce the cosmological analysis of the Dirac-Born-Infeld dRGT massive gravity theory which is a new extension of de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley (dRGT) massive gravity. In this theory, we consider the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) scalar field which is coupled to the graviton field. Moreover, we perform the cosmological background equations, and we demonstrate the self-accelerating background solutions. We show that the theory consists of self-accelerating solutions with an effective cosmological constant. In the following, we exhibit tensor perturbations analyses and achieve the dispersion relation…
We show that the f(T) gravitational paradigm, in which gravity is described by an arbitrary function of the torsion scalar, can provide a mechanism for realizing bouncing cosmologies, thereby avoiding the Big Bang singularity. After constructing the simplest version of an f(T) matter bounce, we investigate the scalar and tensor modes of cosmological perturbations. Our results show that metric perturbations in the scalar sector lead to a background-dependent sound speed, which is a distinguishable feature from Einstein gravity. Additionally, we obtain a scale-invariant primordial power spectrum…
We investigate cyclic and singularity-free evolutions in a universe governed by Lagrange-multiplier modified gravity, either in scalar-field cosmology, as well as in $f(R)$ one. In the scalar case, cyclicity can be induced by a suitably reconstructed simple potential, and the matter content of the universe can be successfully incorporated. In the case of $f(R)$-gravity, cyclicity can be induced by a suitable reconstructed second function $f_2(R)$ of a very simple form, however the matter evolution cannot be analytically handled. Furthermore, we study the evolution of cosmological perturbations…
The idea of gauge theories of gravity predicts that there should exist not only the massless graviton but also massive particles carrying the gravitational force. We study the cosmology in a quadratic gravity with dynamical torsion where gravity may be interpreted as a gauge force associated with the Poincaré group. In addition to the massless spin-2 graviton, the model contains four non-ghost massive particle species: a couple of spin-0, a spin-1 and a spin-2. Supposing the restoration of the local Weyl invariance in the UV limit and the parity invariance, we find the most general minisupersp…
In this paper, we analyze the modified $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity models in Friedmann--Lema\^ıtre--Robertson--Walker (FLRW) background. The actions of bouncing cosmology are studied under consideration of different viable models in $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity theory that can resolve the difficulty of singularity in standard Big-Bang cosmology. Under different viable models in $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity theory, the cosmological constraints are plotted in provisions of cosmic-time, then investigated the bounce circumstance. In addition, the red-shift parameter is used to reconstruct the modified gravit…
Fields of spin $s \geq 1/2$ satisfying wave equations in a curved space obey the Huygens principle under certain conditions clarified by a known theorem. Here this theorem is generalized to spin zero and applied to an inflaton field in de Sitter-like space, showing that tails of scalar radiation are an unavoidable physical feature. Requiring the absence of tails, on the contrary, necessarily implies an unnatural tuning between cosmological constant, scalar field mass, and coupling constant to the curvature.
Some cosmological solutions of massive strings are obtained in Bianchi I space-time following the techniques used by Letelier and Stachel. A class of solutions corresponds to string cosmology associated with/without a magnetic field and the other class consists of pure massive strings, obeying the Takabayashi equation of state.
Astronomical observations reveal a gap in the mass spectrum of relativistic objects: neither black holes nor neutron stars with 2 - 5 solar masses have ever been observed. In this article I proceed in presenting the scenario which discloses a possible hidden connection between massive neutron stars (MANSs), dark matter and dark energy in cosmology. Accordingly, when the curved spacetime embedding MANSs compresses the nuclear matter to beyond a critical supranuclear density $n_{cr},$ mesons, generally transmitting the residual nuclear forces between neutrons, could gain energy by frequently int…
We study the generation of electromagnetic fields in a string-inspired scenario associated with a rolling massive scalar field $ϕ$ on the anti-D3 branes of KKLT de Sitter vacua. The 4-dimensional DBI type effective action naturally gives rise to the coupling between the gauge fields and the inflaton $ϕ$, which leads to the production of cosmological magnetic fields during inflation due to the breaking of conformal invariance. We find that the amplitude of magnetic fields at decoupling epoch can be larger than the limiting seed value required for the galactic dynamo. We also discuss the mechani…
We briefly discuss new models of an `affine' theory of gravity in multidimensional space-times with symmetric connections. We use and generalize Einstein's proposal to specify the space-time geometry by use of the Hamilton principle to determine the connection coefficients from a geometric Lagrangian that is an arbitrary function of the generalized Ricci curvature tensor and of other fundamental tensors. Such a theory supplements the standard Einstein gravity with dark energy (the cosmological constant, in the first approximation), a neutral massive (or tachyonic) vector field vecton, and mass…
A calculation of the one-mode occupation numbers for vacuum fluctuations of massive fields in De Sitter space shows that their use for the generation of classical density perturbations in inflationary cosmology very much depends on their masses and conformal couplings. A new mechanism for the decoherence of relatively massive fields has been identified. A similar analysis of the power law inflation shows that production of adiabatic density perturbations may not take place in models with power p < 3.
It is well known that a closed universe with a minimally coupled massive scalar field always collapses to a singularity unless the initial conditions are extremely fine tuned. We show that the corrections to the equations of motion for the massive scalar field, given by loop quantum gravity in high curvature regime, always lead to a bounce independently of the initial conditions. In contrast to the previous works in loop quantum cosmology, we note that the singularity can be avoided even at the semi-classical level of effective dynamical equations with non-perturbative quantum gravity modifica…
In this work, we focus on the collapse of a spherically symmetric perturbation, with a classical top-hat profile, to study the nonlinear evolution of only viscous modified Chaplygin gas (VMCG) perturbations in Einstein's gravity as well as in loop quantum Cosmology (LQC). In the perturbed region, we have investigated the natures of equation of state parameter, square speed of sound and another perturbed quantities. The results have been analyzed by numerical and graphical investigations.
We consider generic models of quintessence and we investigate the influence of massive neutrino matter with field-dependent masses on the matter power spectrum. In case of minimally coupled neutrino matter, we examine the effect in tracker models with inverse power-law and double exponential potentials. We present detailed investigations for the scaling field with a steep exponential potential, non-minimally coupled to massive neutrino matter, and we derive constraints on field-dependent neutrino masses from the observational data.
