Bosonic rotation codes, introduced here, are a broad class of bosonic error-correcting codes based on phase-space rotation symmetry. We present a universal quantum computing scheme applicable to a subset of this class--number-phase codes--which includes the well-known cat and binomial codes, among many others. The entangling gate in our scheme is code-agnostic and can be used to interface different rotation-symmetric encodings. In addition to a universal set of operations, we propose a teleportation-based error correction scheme that allows recoveries to be tracked entirely in software. Focusing on cat and binomial codes as examples, we compute average gate fidelities for error correction under simultaneous loss and dephasing noise and show numerically that the error-correction scheme is close to optimal for error-free ancillae and ideal measurements. Finally, we present a scheme for fault-tolerant, universal quantum computing based on concatenation of number-phase codes and Bacon-Shor subsystem codes.
We study symmetries of open bosonic systems in the presence of laser pumping. Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians describing these systems can be parity-time (${\cal{PT}}$) symmetric in special cases only. Systems exhibiting this symmetry are characterised by real-valued energy spectra and can display exceptional points, where a symmetry-breaking transition occurs. We demonstrate that there is a more general type of symmetry, i.e., rotation-time (${\cal{RT}}$) symmetry. We observe that ${\cal{RT}}$-symmetric non-Hermitian Hamiltonians exhibit real-valued energy spectra which can be made singular by sym…
Continuous-variable quantum information processing through quantum optics offers a promising platform for building the next generation of scalable fault-tolerant information processors. To achieve quantum computational advantages and fault tolerance, non-Gaussian resources are essential. In this work, we propose and analyze a method to generate a variety of non-Gaussian states using coherent photon subtraction from a two-mode squeezed state followed by photon-number-resolving measurements. The proposed method offers a promising way to generate rotation-symmetric states conventionally used for …

Recent development of mixed-state encoding (MSE) allows pure-state logical information to be encoded by a bosonic (continuous-variable) system in mixed physical state. Despite interest due to its counter-intuitiveness, the utility of the current MSE scheme is limited due to several operational drawbacks, namely redundant information carrier, probabilistic initialisation, and requirement of discrete-variable measurement. In this work, we present a simplified MSE that does not suffer from any of these drawbacks. Specifically, our protocol encodes each qubit by only one mixed-state bosonic mode, …
Bosonic quantum error-correcting codes offer a viable direction towards reducing the hardware overhead required for fault-tolerant quantum information processing. A broad class of bosonic codes, namely rotation-symmetric codes, can be characterized by their phase-space rotation symmetry. However, their performance has been examined to date only within an idealistic noise model. Here, we further analyze the error-correction capabilities of rotation-symmetric codes using a teleportation-based error-correction circuit. To this end, we numerically compute the average gate fidelity, including measu…
We study the occurrence of non-classical rotational inertia (NCRI) arising from superfluidity along grain boundaries in a two-dimensional bosonic system. We make use of a standard mapping between the zero-temperature properties of this system and the statistical mechanics of interacting vortex lines in the mixed phase of a type-II superconductor. In the mapping, the liquid phase of the vortex system corresponds to the superfluid bosonic phase. We consider numerically obtained polycrystalline configurations of the vortex lines in which the microcrystals are separated by liquid-like grain bounda…
Bosonic fault tolerant quantum computing requires preparations of Bosonic code states like cat states and GKP states with high fidelity and reliable quantum certification of these states. Although many proposals on preparing these states have been developed, few investigation has been done on how to reliably certify these experimental states. In this paper, we develop approaches to certify whether a continuous-variable state falls inside a certain Bosonic qubit code space by detecting a witness using Gaussian measurements. Our results can be applied to certification of various cat codes includ…

We summarize our recent results for the induced exchange interaction due to thermal bosonic environment (bath) which also generates quantum noise. Our focus here is on the onset of the interaction. We demonstrate that the induced interaction can be used to manipulate and create entanglement over time scales sufficiently large for controlling the two-qubit system for quantum computing applications, though ultimately the noise effects will dominate.
Bosonic modes have wide applications in various quantum technologies, such as optical photons for quantum communication, magnons in spin ensembles for quantum information storage and mechanical modes for reversible microwave-to-optical quantum transduction. There is emerging interest in utilizing bosonic modes for quantum information processing, with circuit quantum electrodynamics (circuit QED) as one of the leading architectures. Quantum information can be encoded into subspaces of a bosonic superconducting cavity mode with long coherence time. However, standard Gaussian operations (e.g., be…
Aaronson and Arkhipov recently used computational complexity theory to argue that classical computers very likely cannot efficiently simulate linear, multimode, quantum-optical interferometers with arbitrary Fock-state inputs [Aaronson and Arkhipov, Theory Comput. 9, 143 (2013)]. Here we present an elementary argument that utilizes only techniques from quantum optics. We explicitly construct the Hilbert space for such an interferometer and show that its dimension scales exponentially with all the physical resources. We also show in a simple example just how the Schrödinger and Heisenberg pictu…
The quantum nature of the state of a bosonic quantum field manifests itself in its entanglement, coherence, or optical nonclassicality which are each known to be resources for quantum computing or metrology. We provide quantitative and computable bounds relating entanglement measures with optical nonclassicality measures. These bounds imply that strongly entangled states must necessarily be strongly optically nonclassical. As an application, we infer strong bounds on the entanglement that can be produced with an optically nonclassical state impinging on a beam splitter. For Gaussian states, we…
We study bosonic quantum computations using the Segal-Bargmann representation of quantum states. We argue that this holomorphic representation is a natural one which not only gives a canonical description of bosonic quantum computing using basic elements of complex analysis but also provides a unifying picture which delineates the boundary between discrete- and continuous-variable quantum information theory. Using this representation, we show that the evolution of a single bosonic mode under a Gaussian Hamiltonian can be described as an integrable dynamical system of classical Calogero-Moser p…

Continuous-variable (CV) encoding allows information to be processed compactly and efficiently on quantum processors. Recently developed techniques such as controlled beam-splitter operations and the near deterministic phonon subtractions make trapped ion systems attractive for exploring CV quantum computing. Here we propose a probabilistic scheme based on the boson sculpting technique for generating multipartite highly entangled states of motional modes of trapped ion systems. We also investigate the effects of decoherence on the fidelity of the generated state by performing numerical simulat…
In spite of their simple description in terms of rotations or symplectic transformations in phase space, quadratic Hamiltonians such as those modeling the most common Gaussian operations on bosonic modes remain poorly understood in terms of entropy production. For instance, determining the von Neumann entropy produced by a Bogoliubov transformation is notably a hard problem, with generally no known analytical solution. Here, we overcome this difficulty by using the replica method, a tool borrowed from statistical physics and quantum field theory. We exhibit a first application of this method t…
We propose a universal gate set for quantum computing with all-to-all connectivity and intrinsic robustness to bit-flip errors based on parity encoding. We show that logical controlled phase gate and $R_z$ rotations can be implemented in parity encoding with single-qubit operations. Together with logical $R_x$ rotations, implemented via nearest-neighbor controlled-NOT gates and an $R_x$ rotation, these form a universal gate set. As the controlled phase gate requires only single-qubit rotations, the proposed scheme has advantages for several cornerstone quantum algorithms, e.g., the quantum Fou…
Quantum codes typically rely on large numbers of degrees of freedom to achieve low error rates. However each additional degree of freedom introduces a new set of error mechanisms. Hence minimizing the degrees of freedom that a quantum code utilizes is helpful. One quantum error correction solution is to encode quantum information into one or more bosonic modes. We revisit rotation-invariant bosonic codes, which are supported on Fock states that are gapped by an integer $g$ apart, and the gap $g$ imparts number shift resilience to these codes. Intuitively, since phase operators and number shift…
We present quantum protocols for executing arbitrarily accurate $π/2^k$ rotations of a qubit about its $Z$ axis. Reduced instruction set computing (\textsc{risc}) architectures typically restrict the instruction set to stabilizer operations and a single non-stabilizer operation, such as preparation of a "magic" state from which $T = Z(π/4)$ gates can be teleported. Although the overhead required to distill high-fidelity copies of this magic state is high, the subsequent quantum compiling overhead to realize $Z$ rotations in a \textsc{risc} architecture can be much greater. We develop a complex…
Quantum repeaters are essential ingredients for quantum networks that link distant quantum modules such as quantum computers and sensors. Motivated by distributed quantum computing and communication, quantum repeaters that relay discrete-variable quantum information have been extensively studied; while continuous-variable (CV) quantum information underpins a variety of quantum sensing and communication application, a quantum-repeater architecture for genuine CV quantum information remains largely unexplored. This paper reports a CV quantum-repeater architecture based on CV quantum teleportatio…

We consider a protocol for sharing quantum states using continuous variable systems. Specifically we introduce an encoding procedure where bosonic modes in arbitrary secret states are mixed with several ancillary squeezed modes through a passive interferometer. We derive simple conditions on the interferometer for this encoding to define a secret sharing protocol and we prove that they are satisfied by almost any interferometer. This implies that, if the interferometer is chosen uniformly at random, the probability that it may not be used to implement a quantum secret sharing protocol is zero.…
