Topological phases have recently witnessed a rapid progress in non-Hermitian systems. Here we study a one-dimensional non-Hermitian Aubry-André-Harper model with imaginary periodic or quasiperiodic modulations. We demonstrate that the non-Hermitian off-diagonal AAH models can host zero-energy modes at the edges. In contrast to the Hermitian case, the zero-energy mode can be localized only at one edge. Such a topological phase corresponds to the existence of a quarter winding number defined by eigenenergy in momentum space. We further find the coexistence of a zero-energy mode located only at one edge and topological nonzero energy edge modes characterized by a generalized Bott index. In the incommensurate case, a topological non-Hermitian quasicrystal is predicted where all bulk states and two topological edge states are localized at one edge. Such topological edge modes are protected by the generalized Bott index. Finally, we propose an experimental scheme to realize these non-Hermitian models in electric circuits. Our findings add a new direction for exploring topological properties in Aubry-André-Harper models.
A generalization of the Aubry-André-Harper (AAH) model is developed, containing a tunable phase shift between on-site and off-diagonal modulations. A localization transition can be induced by varying just this phase, keeping all other model parameters constant. The complete localization phase diagram is obtained. Unlike the original AAH model, the generalized model can exhibit a transition between topologically trivial bandstructures and topologically non-trivial bandstructures containing protected boundary states. These boundary states can be pumped across the system by adiabatic variations i…
Higher-order topological phases of matter have been extensively studied in various areas of physics. While the Aubry-André-Harper model provides a paradigmatic example to study topological phases, it has not been explored whether a generalized Aubry-André-Harper model can exhibit a higher-order topological phenomenon. Here, we construct a two-dimensional higher-order topological insulator with chiral symmetry based on the Aubry-André-Harper model. We find the coexistence of zero-energy and nonzero energy corner-localized modes. The former is protected by the quantized quadrupole moment, while …
We present a detailed study of the topological properties of the Kitaev chain with long-range pairing terms and in the presence of an Aubry-André-Harper on-site potential. Specifically, we consider algebraically decaying superconducting pairing amplitudes; the exponent of this decay is found to determine a critical pairing strength, below which the chain remains topologically trivial. Above the critical pairing, topological edge modes are observed in the central gap. For sufficiently fast decay of the pairing, these modes are identified as Majorana zero-modes. However, if the pairing term deca…
The Aubry-André or Harper (AAH) model has been the subject of extensive theoretical research in the context of quantum localization. Recently, it was shown that one-dimensional quasicrystals described by the incommensurate AAH model has a nontrivial topology. In this Letter, we show that the commensurate off-diagonal AAH model is topologically nontrivial in the gapless regime and supports zero-energy edge modes. Unlike the incommensurate case, the nontrivial topology in the off-diagonal AAH model is attributed to the topological properties of the one-dimensional Majorana chain. We discuss the …
By introducing loss to one sublattice of a dimer chain described by the extended Aubry-André or Harper (AAH) model, we study the topological features including the edge states, spectrum and winding number of the chain. We find that the parameter region for the system to have real band-gap-closing is increased due to the loss, and the average displacement of the single excitation can still witness the topological features of the chain in the presence of loss. The robustness of the zero energy eigenstate against four kinds of disorders is also examined. A feasible experiment setup based on coupl…
We report on the design, fabrication and optical characterization of bichromatic photonic crystal cavities in thin silicon membranes, with resonances around 1550 nm wavelength. The cavity designs are based on a recently proposed photonic crystal implementation of the Aubry-André-Harper bichromatic potential, which relies on the superposition of two one-dimensional lattices with non-integer ratio between the periodicity constants. In photonic crystal nanocavities, this confinement mechanism is such that optimized figures of merit can be straightforwardly achieved, in particular an ultra-high-Q …
Non-Hermitian quantum many-body systems are a fascinating subject to be explored. Using the generalized density matrix renormalisation group method and complementary exact diagonalization, we elucidate the many-body ground states and dynamics of a 1D interacting non-Hermitian Aubry-Andre-Harper model for bosons. We find stable ground states in the superfluid and Mott insulating regimes under wide range of conditions in this model. We reveal a skin superfluid state induced by the non-Hermiticity from the nonreciprocal hopping. We investigate the topology of the Mott insulating phase and find it…
In the presence of quasiperiodic potentials, the celebrated Kitaev chain presents an intriguing phase diagram with ergodic, localized and and multifractal states. In this work, we generalize these results by studying the localization properties of the Aubry-André-Harper model in the presence of long-range hopping and superconducting pairing amplitudes. These amplitudes decay with power-law exponents $ξ$ and $α$ respectively. To this end, we review and compare a toolbox of global and local characterization methods in order to investigate different types of transitions between ergodic, localized…
We study the high temperature transport behavior of the Aubry-André-Harper (AAH) model, both in the isolated thermodynamic limit and in the open system. At the critical point of the AAH model, we find hints of super-diffusive behavior from the scaling of spread of an initially localized wavepacket. On the other hand, when connected to two baths with different chemical potentials at the two ends, we find that the critical point shows clear sub-diffusive scaling of current with system size. We provide an explanation of this by showing that the current scaling with system-size is entirely governe…
We uncover a systematic structure in the single particle phase-diagram of the quasiperiodic Aubry-André-Harper(AAH) model with power-law hoppings ($\sim \frac{1}{r^σ}$) when the quasiperiodicity parameter is chosen to be a member of the `metallic mean family' of irrational Diophantine numbers. In addition to the fully delocalized and localized phases we find a co-existence of multifractal (localized) states with the delocalized states for $σ<1$ ($σ>1$). The fraction of delocalized eigenstates in these phases can be obtained from a general sequence, which is a manifestation of a mathematical pr…
We have incorporated spin-orbit coupling into the Aubry-Andre model of tight-binding electron motion in the presence of periodic potential with a period incommensurate with lattice constant. This model is known to exhibit an insulator-metal transition upon increasing the hopping amplitude. Without external magnetic field, spin-orbit coupling leads to a simple renormalization of the hopping amplitude. However, when the degeneracy of the on-site energies is lifted by an external magnetic field, the interplay of Zeeman splitting and spin-orbit coupling has a strong effect on the localization leng…
We study the damping dynamics of the single-particle correlation for an open system under periodic and aperiodic order, which is dominated by the Lindblad master equation. In the absence of the aperiodic order, the Liouvillian superoperator exhibits the non-Hermitian skin effect, which leads to unidirectional damping dynamics, dubbed as "chiral damping". Due to the non-Hermitian skin effect, the damping dynamics is boundary sensitive: The long-time damping of such open systems is algebraic under periodic boundary conditions but exponential under open boundary conditions. We reveal the phase tr…
Topological phonon polaritons (TPhPs) are promising optical modes relevant in long-range radiative heat transfer, information processing and infrared sensing, whose topological protection is expected to enable their robust existence and transport. In this work we show that TPhPs can be supported in one-dimensional (1D) bichromatic silicon carbide nanoparticle (NP) chains, and demonstrate that they can considerably enhance radiative heat transfer for an array much longer than the wavelength of radiation. By introducing incommensurate or commensurate modulations on the interparticle distances, t…

Topological feature has become an intensively studied subject in many fields of physics. As a witness of topological phase, the edge states are topologically protected and may be helpful in quantum information processing. In this paper, we define a measure to quantify the dynamical localization of system and simulate the localization in the 1D Aubry-André model. We find an interesting connection between the edge states and the dynamical localization of the system, this connection may be used as a signature of edge state and topological phase.
We investigate the localization properties of a spin chain with an antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbour coupling, subject to an external quasiperiodic on-site magnetic field. The quasiperiodic modulation interpolates between two paradigmatic models, namely the Aubry-André and the Fibonacci models. We find that stronger many-body interactions extend the ergodic phase in the former, whereas they shrink it in the latter. Furthermore, the many-body localization transition points at the two limits of the interpolation appear to be continuously connected along the deformation. As a result, the positi…

We consider a driven, non-Hermitian generalization of the Aubry-Andre-Harper (AAH) model. We show that the introduction of periodic driving allows us to obtain fully real quasienergy spectra in configurations where the corresponding static system has complex energy eigenvalues for any non-Hermitian degree. We illustrate how generalized parity-time (PT) symmetry can be applied within the Floquet formalism and show that our model's fully real quasienergy spectrum corresponds to an unbroken symmetry. This model exhibits a Floquet topological phase, few examples of have been found in non-Hermitian…
