We present ver. 3 of GLISSANDO, a versatile Monte-Carlo generator for Glauber-like models of the initial stages of ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The present version incorporates the wounded quark model, which is phenomenologically successful in reproducing multiplicities of particle production at RHIC and the LHC. Within this model, one can study the nucleon substructure fluctuation effects, recently explored in p-A collisions. In addition, the code includes the possibility of investigating collisions of light nuclei, such as $^{3}$He and $^{3}$H, or the $α$-clustered $^{7,9}$Be, $^{12}$C, and $^{16}$O, where the deformation of the intrinsic wave function influences the transverse shape of the initial state. The current version, being down-compatible, retains the functionality of the previous releases, such as incorporation of various variants of Glauber-like models, a smooth $NN$ inelasticity profile in the impact parameter obtained from a parametrization of experimental data, fluctuating strength of the entropy deposition, or realistic nuclear distributions of heavy nuclei with deformation. The code can provide output in the format containing the event-by-event source location, which may be further used in modeling the intermediate evolution phase, e.g., with hydrodynamics or transport models. The interface is simplified, such that in the control input file the user may supply only the very basic information, such as the collision energy, the mass numbers of the colliding nuclei, and the model type. GLISSANDO 3 is integrated with the CERN ROOT platform. The package includes numerous illustrative and useful ROOT scripts to compute and plot various results.
We present an extended version of GLISSANDO, a Monte-Carlo generator for Glauber-like models of the initial stage of relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The increased functionality of the code incorporates a parametrization of shape of nuclei, including light nuclei needed in the NA61 experiment, the nuclear deformation, a possibility of using correlated distributions of nucleons in nuclei read from external files, an option of overlaying distributions of produced particles dependent on the space-time rapidity, the inclusion of the core-corona effect, or the output of the source distributions t…
GLISSANDO is a Glauber Monte-Carlo generator for early-stages of relativistic heavy-ion collisions, written in c++ and interfaced to Root. Several models are implemented: the wounded-nucleon model, the binary collisions model, the mixed model, and the model with hot-spots. Subtleties of the distribution of nucleon in the nucleus are discussed. The original geometric distribution of sources in the transverse plane can be superimposed with a statistical distribution simulating the dispersion in the generated transverse energy in each individual collision. The program generates inter alia the fix…
In the framework of the Glauber model as implemented in GLISSANDO 2, we study the fluctuations of flow harmonics in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC centre-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV. The model with wounded nucleons and the admixture of binary collisions leads to reasonable agreement for the ellipticity and triangularity fluctuations with the experimental data from the ATLAS, ALICE, and CMS collaborations, verifying the assumption that the initial eccentricity is approximately proportional to the harmonic flow of charged particles. While the agreement, in particular at the level of event-by-event d…
In the framework of the Glauber approach we investigate the influence of the initial fluctuations on various measures of the initial-state geometry in 63Cu+197Au and 238U+238U relativistic ion collisions. Comparing variants of Glauber model (the wounded-nucleon model, the mixed model, and the hot-spot model) we indicate sensitivity of certain observables, in particular for the azimuthal eccentricity parameters as well as for the correlation of directions of the principal axes associated with the Fourier components. We apply GLISSANDO in our analysis.
Statistical fluctuations in the transverse distribution of sources in relativistic heavy ion collisions and an asymmetric emission profile associated with the wounded nucleons lead to rapidity dependence of the reaction plane. The size of this effect is estimated for the gold-gold collisions at the highest RHIC energy ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 \mathrm{GeV}$) in the Glauber model using GLISSANDO. The hydrodynamical evolution of the resulting torqued fireball is carried out in 3+1 dimensions considering a perfect fluid. Hadronization is simulated using THERMINATOR including non-flow contribution comin…
We investigate the influence of the nucleon-nucleon collision profile (probability of interaction as a function of the nucleon-nucleon impact parameter) in the wounded nucleon model and its extensions on several observables measured in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We find that the participant eccentricity coefficient, $ε^\ast$, as well as the higher harmonic coefficients, $ε_n^\ast$, are reduced by 10-20% for mid-peripheral collisions when the realistic (Gaussian) profile is used, as compared to the case with the commonly-used hard-sphere profile. Similarly, the multiplicity fluctuations…
We show that the event-by-event fluctuations of the transverse size of the initial source, which follow directly from the Glauber treatment of the earliest stage of relativistic heavy-ion collisions, cause, after hydrodynamic evolution, fluctuations of the transverse flow velocity at hadronic freeze-out. This in turn leads to event-by-event fluctuations of the average transverse momentum, p_T. Simulations with GLISSANDO for the Glauber phase, followed by a realistic hydrodynamic evolution and statistical hadronization carried out with THERMINATOR, lead to agreement with the RHIC data. In parti…
In the RHIC Beam Energy Scan program, gold nuclei are collided with different collision energies in the range from few to 62.4 GeV. The goals of the program are to explore the onset of QGP creation, locate the critical point of QCD and study dense baryon matter. We report on the first application of Monte Carlo Glauber (GLISSANDO2) and T$_{\rm R}$ENTo $p=0$ initial states extended to 3D for event-by-event viscous fluid dynamic (vHLLE) with hadronic cascade modelling of Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}=27$ and 62.4 GeV, which is the upper region of RHIC BES energies. The initial states…
We revisit the Glauber model to study the heavy ion reaction cross sections and elastic scattering angular distributions at low and intermediate energies. The Glauber model takes nucleon-nucleon cross sections and nuclear densities as inputs and has no free parameter and thus can predict the cross sections for unknown systems. The Glauber model works at low energies down to Coulomb barrier with very simple modifications. We present new parametrization of measured total cross sections as well as ratio of real to imaginary parts of the scattering amplitudes for pp and np collisions as a function…
Glauber models are used to calculate geometric quantities in the initial state of heavy ion collisions, such as impact parameter, number of participating nucleons and initial eccentricity. Experimental heavy-ion collaboration, in particular at RHIC and LHC, use Glauber Model calculations for various geometric observables. In this document, we describe the assumptions inherent to the approach, and provide an updated implementation (v2) of the Monte Carlo based Glauber Model calculation, which originally was used by the PHOBOS collaboration. The main improvement w.r.t. the earlier version (arXiv…
Description of relativistic heavy-ion collisions at the energies of RHIC Beam Energy Scan program with fluid dynamic approach poses several challenges, one of which being a complex geometry and a longer duration of the pre-hydrodynamic stage. Therefore, existing fluid dynamic models for heavy-ion collisions at the RHIC Beam Energy Scan energies rely on rather complex initial states, such as UrQMD cascade or multi-fluid dynamics. In this study, we show that functionally simpler, non-dynamical initial states can be employed for the fluid dynamical simulations of Au-Au collisions at $\mbox{$\sqrt…
We study the effect of the nucleon meson cloud on predictions of the Monte Carlo Glauber wounded nucleon model for $AA$, $pA$, and $pp$ collisions. From the analysis of the data on the charged multiplicity density in $AA$ collisions we find that the meson-baryon Fock component reduces the required fraction of binary collisions by a factor of $\sim 2$ for Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s}=0.2$ TeV and $\sim 1.5$ for Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ TeV. For central $AA$ collisions the meson cloud can increase the multiplicity density by $\sim 16-18$\%. We give predictions for the midrapidity cha…
The Glauber approximation for the treatment of heavy-ion scattering, has already been shown to give reliable predictions for the reaction cross section in the particular case of intermediate energy charge-exchange processes. In the present work, we couple a Glauber-type model to microscopic Random Phase Approximation calculations of the charge-exchange excitations of $^{208}$Pb. The aim is to solve the longstanding question whether the very elusive charge-exchange isovector monopole has been really identified in the past experiments, or other multipoles were prevalent in the observed spectra.
Monte Carlo simulations are used to compute the centrality dependence of the odd moments of the initial eccentricity $ε_{n+1}$, relative to the even order (n) participant planes $Ψ^*_n$ in Au+Au collisions. The results obtained for two models of the eccentricity -- the Glauber and the factorized Kharzeev-Levin-Nardi (fKLN) models -- indicate magnitudes which are essentially zero. They suggest that a possible correlation between the orientations of the the odd and even participant planes ($Ψ^*_{n+1}$ and $Ψ^*_n$ respectively), do not have a significant influence on the calculated eccentricities…
Non-trivial geometrical effects in relativistic central collisions of deformed nuclei are studied using a simple version of optical Glauber model. For very small impact parameters large centrality and eccentricity fluctuations are observed. In very high multiplicity collisions of oblate nuclei (e.g. Au and Cu) significant fraction of events with elliptic flow strength v_2 dependent on oblateness beta_2 is predicted.
We analyze measures of the azimuthal asymmetry, in particular the participant harmonic moments, epsilon*, in a variety of Glauber-like models for the early stage of collisions at RHIC. Quantitative comparisons indicate substantial model dependence for epsilon*, reflecting different effective number of sources, while the dependence of the scaled standard deviation sigma(epsilon*)/epsilon* on the particular Glauber model is weak. For all the considered models the values of sigma(epsilon*)/epsilon* range from ~0.5 for the central collisions to ~0.3-0.4 for peripheral collisions. These values, dom…
The approach to problem of nuclear shadowing based on Gribov Reggeon calculus is presented. Here the total cross section of $h A$ interaction is found in a parameter-free description, employing the new data on the gluon density of the Pomeron, measured with high precision at HERA, as input. The model is then applied for calculation of $J/ψ$ production in $d Au$ collisions at top RHIC energy. It is shown that the theoretical estimates are in a very good agreement with the PHENIX data, and further predictions for the $J/ψ$ suppression in $p Pb$ collisions at coming soon LHC are made.
We study, within the Monte-Carlo Glauber model, centrality dependence of the midrapidity charged multiplicity density $dN_{ch}/dη$ and of the anisotropy coefficients $\varepsilon_{2,3}$ in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ TeV and in Xe+Xe collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5.44$ TeV. Calculations are performed for versions with and without nucleon meson cloud. The fraction of the binary collisions, $α$, has been fitted to the data on $dN_{ch}/dη$ in Pb+Pb collisions. We obtain $α\approx 0.09(0.13)$ with (without) meson cloud. The effect of meson cloud on the $dN_{ch}/dη$ is relatively small. For Xe+Xe…
Recent studies reveal that at high energies, collisions of small system like $p+p$ gives signatures similar to that widely observed in heavy ion collisions hinting towards a possibility of forming a medium with collective behaviour. With this motivation, we have used the Glauber model, which is traditionally applied to heavy ion collisions, in small system using anisotropic and inhomogeneous density profile of proton and found that the proposed model reproduces the charged particle multiplicity distribution of $p+p$ collisions at LHC energies very well. Collision geometric properties like mean…
In the framework of the Glauber approach we analyze the shape parameters of the early-formed system and their event-by-event fluctuations. We test a variety of models: the conventional wounded nucleon model, a model admixing binary collisions to the wounded nucleons, a model with hot spots, as well as the hot-spot model where the deposition of energy occurs with a superimposed probability distribution. We look in detail at the so-called participant multipole moments, obtained by an averaging procedure where in each event the system is translated to its center of mass and aligned with the major…
Results from proton-proton ($pp$) collisions have routinely been used as a baseline to analyze and understand the production of QCD matter expected to be produced in nuclear collisions. But recent studies of small systems formed in $pp$ collisions at the LHC energies hint at the possibility of producing medium with collective behavior. Therefore, results from $pp$ collisions required more careful investigation to understand whether QCD matter is produced in high multiplicity $pp$ collisions. With this motivation, the Glauber model traditionally used to study the heavy-ion collision dynamics at…
We improve the centrality definition in impact parameter in PACIAE model responding the fact reported by the ALICE, ATLAS, and CMS collaborations that the maximum impact parameter in heavy ion collisions should be extended to 20 $fm$. Meanwhile the PACIAE program is updated to a new version of PACIAE 2.2.2 with convenience of studying the elementary nuclear collisions, proton-nucleus collisions, and the nucleus-nucleus collisions in one unified program version. The new impact parameter definition together with the optical Glauber model calculated impact parameter bin, $N_{part}$, and $N_{coll}…
A further development of the evolutionary picture of A+A collisions, which we call the integrated HydroKinetic Model (iHKM), is proposed. The model comprises a generator of the initial state GLISSANDO, pre-thermal dynamics of A+A collisions leading to thermalization, subsequent relativistic viscous hydrodynamic expansion of quark-gluon and hadron medium (vHLLE), its particlization, and finally hadronic cascade ultrarelativistic QMD. We calculate mid-rapidity charged-particle multiplicities, pion, kaon, and antiproton spectra, charged-particle elliptic flows, and pion interferometry radii for P…
The ability to accurately compute the series of coefficients $v_n$ characterizing the momentum space anisotropies of particle production in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions as a function of centrality is widely regarded as a triumph of fluid dynamics as description of the bulk matter evolution. A key ingredient to fluid dynamical modeling is however the initial spatial distribution of matter as created by a yet not completely understood equilibration process. A measurement directly sensitive to this initial state geometry is therefore of high value for constraining models of pre-equilibr…
We present a systematic hydrodynamic study of the evolution of hadron spectra and their azimuthal anisotropy from the lowest collision energy studied at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), sqrt(s) = 7.7 A GeV, to the highest energy reachable at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), sqrt(s) = 5500 A GeV. The energy dependence of the flow observables are quantitatively studied for both the Monte-Carlo Glauber and Monte-Carlo Kharzeev-Levin-Nardi (MC-KLN) models. For MC-Glauber model initial conditions with η/s = 0.08, the differential charged hadron elliptic flow v_2^{ch}(p_T, sqrt(s)) is fou…
We present new results based on an improved version of the Glauber model, used to describe the nuclear absorption of J/psi in reactions between nuclei at high energy. The excitation of the colour degrees of freedom of nucleons, due to collisions mediated by one-gluon exchange, is taken into account. It is found that the proposed mechanism leads to larger nuclear absorption of J/psi than previously considered.
We study within the IP-Glasma and two-component MC-Glauber models the effects of initial state geometry and fluctuations on multiplicities and eccentricities for several collision species at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). These include copper-gold (Cu+Au), gold-gold (Au+Au), and uranium-uranium (U+U) collisions. The multiplicity densities per participant pair are very similar in all systems studied. Ellipticities vary strongly between collision systems, most significantly for central collisions, while fluctuation driven odd moments vary little between systems. Event-by-event distr…
In a Glauber Monte Carlo framework, taking account of the transverse spatial distribution of hard partons in the nucleon, we analyse the nuclear modification factor $R_{dAu}$ for $J/ψ$ in d+Au collisions with the EPS09 shadowing parametrization. After the influence of nucleon hard partons distribution is considered, a clearly upward correction is revealed for the dependence of $R_{dAu}$ on $N_{coll}$ in peripheral d+Au collisions, however, an unconspicuous correction is shown for the results versus $p_{T}$. The theoretical results are in good agreement with the experimental data from PHENIX.
We review integrated dynamical approaches to describe heavy ion reaction as a whole at ultrarelativistic energies. Since final observables result from all the history of the reaction, it is important to describe all the stages of the reaction to obtain the properties of the quark gluon plasma from experimental data. As an example of these approaches, we develop an integrated dynamical model, which is composed of a fully (3+1) dimensional ideal hydrodynamic model with the state-of-the-art equation of state based on lattice QCD, and subsequent hadronic cascade in the late stage. Initial conditio…
