Heat transfer between a silver nanoparticle and surrounding water has been studied using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The thermal conductance (Kapitza conductance) at the interface between a nanoparticle and surrounding water has been calculated using four different approaches: transient with/without temperature gradient (internal thermal resistance) in the nanoparticle, steady-state non-equilibrium and finally equilibrium simulations. The results of steady-state non-equilibrium and equilibrium are in agreement but differ from the transient approach results. MD simulations results also reveal that in the quenching process of a hot silver nanoparticle, heat dissipates into the solvent over a length-scale of ~ 2nm and over a timescale of less than 5ps. By introducing a continuum solid-like model and considering a heat conduction mechanism in water, it is observed that the results of the temperature distribution for water shells around the nanoparticle agree well with MD results. It is also found that the local water thermal conductivity around the nanoparticle is greater by about 50 percent than that of bulk water. These results have important implications for understanding heat transfer mechanisms in nanofluids systems and also for cancer photothermal therapy, wherein an accurate local description of heat transfer in an aqueous environment is crucial.
Single phase, uniform size (~9 nm) Cobalt Ferrite (CFO) nanoparticles have been synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis using oleic acid as a surfactant. The as synthesized oleic acid coated CFO (OA-CFO) nanoparticles were well dispersible in nonpolar solvents but not dispersible in water. The OA-CFO nanoparticles have been successfully transformed to highly water dispersible citric acid coated CFO (CA-CFO) nanoparticles using a novel single step ligand exchange process by mechanochemical milling, in which small chain citric acid molecules replace the original large chain oleic acid molecules av…

The accurate description of iron oxides/water interfaces requires reliable force field parameters that can be developed through the comparison with sophisticated quantum mechanical calculations. Here a set of CLASS2 force field parameters is optimized to describe the Fe-Owater cross interaction through comparison with hybrid density functional theory (HSE06) calculations of the potential energy function for a single water molecule adsorbed on the Fe3O4 (001) surface and with density functional tight binding (DFTB+U) molecular dynamics simulations for a water tri-layer on the same surface. The …
Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 nanoparticles were synthesized by the sol-gel method. The effects of the heat treatment conditions, ethylene glycol (EG) and deionized water (DW) on their phase structure and formation of the undesirable barium carbonate (BaCO3) phase were investigated. It was found that increasing the temperature of the samples caused an increase in the peak intensities of perovskite structures, and a decrease in the intensities of the BaCO3 peaks. Moreover, omitting EG, the sol stabilizer, and water, the solvent, decreased the peak intensities of BaCO3. Decreasing the heating rate caused bette…
The polyol route is a versatile and up-scalable method to produce large batches of iron oxide nanoparticles with well-defined structure and magnetic properties. Controlling parameters such as temperature and duration of reaction, heating profile, nature of polyol solvent or of organometallic precursors were reported in previous studies of literature, but none of them described yet the crucial role of water in the forced hydrolysis pathway, whose presence is mandatory for nanoparticle production. This communication investigates the influence of the water amount and temperature at which it is in…
Computational modeling of titanium dioxide nanoparticles of realistic size is extremely relevant for the direct comparison with experiments but it is also a rather demanding task. We have recently worked on a multistep/scale procedure to obtain global optimized minimum structures for chemically stable spherical titania nanoparticles of increasing size, with diameter from 1.5 nm (~300 atoms) to 4.4 nm (~4000 atoms). We use first self-consistent-charge density functional tight-binding (SCC-DFTB) methodology to perform thermal annealing simulations to obtain globally optimized structures and then…
Using a model for concrete piles driven into clays, we compared penetration depths between uncoated piles and piles coated with titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles. The behavior of surfaces coated with TiO2 changes to superhydrophilic, enabling water molecules to penetrate inside the clay pores. The attraction suppresses or reduces the compression of water inside the clay pores. The absence of bulk pressure from water causes the pile not to bounce (backward movement after striking). Contrary to hydrophobic surfaces, which tend to repel water molecules, water is compressed into the clay pores…
Single phase cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4, CFO) nanoparticles of a controlled size (~ 6 nm) exhibiting superparamagnetic properties have been synthesized by hydrothermal technique using oleic acid (OA) as surfactant. The oleic acid coated CFO nanoparticles are stable in non-polar organic media, such as hexane but are not well dispersible in water. The surface of these snanoparticles has been further modified by citric acid using ligand exchange process, which makes CFO nanoparticles more stable colloidal solution in water. Citric acid coated CFO nanoparticles exhibits high dispersibility in water, …
This study utilizes molecular dynamics simulations to scrutinize the influence of type and volume fraction of nanoparticle on the density of nanofluids, i.e. silver (as a hydrophilic case) and titanium dioxide (as a hydrophobic case) water-based nanofluids. Ionic structure of TiO2 distinguishes the solid-liquid interactions with those in silver-water nanofluid. The thickness of nanolayer is estimated from density profile formed around the nanoparticle and is included in the density calculation. It is found that the type of interatomic potential between the nanoparticle and surrounding water ca…
Metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) are regarded as good candidates for many technological applications, where their functional environment is often an aqueous solution. The correct description of metal oxide electronic structure is still a challenge for local and semilocal density functionals, whereas hybrid functional methods provide an improved description, and local atomic function based codes such as CRYSTAL17 outperform plane wave codes when it comes to hybrid functional calculations. However, the computational cost of hybrids are still prohibitive for systems of real sizes, in a real enviro…
Hydrogen is a promising fossil-fuel alternative fuel owing to its environmentally neutral emissions and high energy density. However, the need for purified water and external power are critical hindrances to implementation of hydrogen production. The present work reveals the potential to overcome these shortcomings through piezo-photocatalysis of seawater using BaTiO3-x (BTO) nanoparticles. This material was made piezoelectrically active by annealing under different atmospheres, including O2, N2, Ar, and H2, the latter of which caused Ti4+ to Ti(4-x)+ multiple reductions and structural expansi…
Heat transfer from irradiated metallic nanoparticles is relevant to a broad array of applications ranging from water desalination to photoacoustics. The efficacy of such processes relies on the ability of these nanoparticles to absorb the pulsed illuminating light and to quickly transfer energy to the environment. Here we show that compared to homogeneous gold nanoparticles having the same size, gold-silica core-shell nanoparticles enable heat transfers to liquid water that are faster. We reach this conclusion by considering both analytical and numerical calculations. The key factor explaining…
The use of hot electrons generated from the decay of surface plasmons is a new paradigm to increase the conversion yield in solar energy technologies. Titanium nitride (TiN) is an emerging plasmonic ceramic that offers compatibility with CMOS technology, corrosion resistance, as well as mechanical strength and durability thus outperforming noble metals (i.e., Au, Ag) in terms of cost, mechanical, chemical and thermal stability. Here, we show that plasmonic TiN nanoparticles produce 25% higher photocurrent enhancement than Au nanoparticles decorated on TiO2 nanowires for photoelectrochemical wa…
The production of hydrogen from water using only a catalyst and solar energy is one of the most challenging and promising outlets for the generation of clean and renewable energy. Semiconductor photocatalysts for solar hydrogen production by water photolysis must employ stable, non-toxic, abundant and inexpensive visible-light absorbers capable of harvesting light photons with adequate potential to reduce water. Here, we show that a-Fe2O3 can meet these requirements by means of using hydrothermally prepared nanorings. These iron oxide nanoring photocatalysts proved capable of producing hydroge…
In a recent publication, we have highlighted the potential of phosphonic acid terminated PEG oligomers to functionalize strong UV absorption cerium oxide nanoparticles[1], which yield suspensions that are stable in aqueous or organic solvents and are redispersible in different solvent after freeze-drying. In the present work, we highlight the interfacial activity of the functional ceria nanoparticles and their potential to modify hydrophobic surfaces. We first investigated Phosphonated-PEG amphiphilic oligomers behavior as strong surface active species forming irreversibly adsorbed layers. We …
Understanding the structure and chemical composition at the liquid-nanoparticle (NP) interface is crucial for a wide range of physical, chemical and biological processes. The APT specimen is prepared by controlled graphene encapsulation of the solution containing nanoparticles on a metal tip, with an end radius in the range of 50 nm to allow field ionization and evaporatio…
Flat TiO$_2$ layers are deposited by magnetron sputtering on Ti/Si wafers. The TiO$_2$ surfaces are then sputter-coated with thin Au films of a nominal thickness of 0.5-10 nm that are converted by solid-state dewetting into Au nanoparticles of tuneable size and spacing; the Au nanoparticle size can be tuned over a broad range, i.e. ca. 3-200 nm. The Au-decorated TiO$_2$ surfaces enable plasmonic photo-electrochemical water splitting under visible light illumination (450-750 nm). The water splitting performance reaches a maximum for TiO$_2$ layers decorated with ~ 30 nm-sized Au particles. As e…
The Casimir pressure is investigated in three-layer systems where the intervening stratum possesses magnetic properties. This subject is gaining in importance in connection with ferrofluids and their use in various microelectromechanical devices. We present general formalism of the Lifshitz theory adapted to the case of ferrofluid sandwiched between two dielectric walls. The Casimir pressure is computed for the cases of kerosene- and water-based ferrofluids containing a 5% fraction of magnetite nanoparticles with different diameters between silica glass walls. For this purpose, we have found t…
The photothermal energy conversion in hanging and floating polyaniline (PANi)-cotton fabrics is investigated using a model based on the heat diffusion equation. Perfect absorption and anti-reflection of wet hanging PANi-cotton fabrics cause quick transfer of total incident light into water confining nearly 100 $\%$ of the sunlight. As a result, a hanging membrane is found to have more attractive properties than a floating above water fabric. We find, however, that the photothermal properties of a floating PANi-cotton membrane can greatly be enhanced by dispersing TiN nanoparticles in the water…

Bio-conjugated nanomaterials play a promising role in the development of novel supramolecular structures, molecular machines, and biosensing devices. In this study, lipid-conjugated gold nanoparticles were synthesized and allowed to form a self-assembled monolayer structure. The nanoparticles were prepared by a phase transfer method, which involved the reduction of potassium tetrachloroaurate (III) by sodium citrate in an aqueous solution and the simultaneous transfer of the reduced species to an organic medium containing DMPC (1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine). The gold nanoparticl…
