We study phase transitions in a softly broken $U(1)$ complex singlet scalar model in which the dark matter is the pseudo-scalar part of a singlet whose direct detection coupling to matter is strongly suppressed. Our aim is to find ways to test this model with the stochastic gravitational wave background from the scalar phase transition. We find that the phase transition which induces vacuum expectation values for both the Higgs boson and the singlet - necessary to provide a realistic dark matter candidate - is always of the second order. If the stochastic gravitational wave background characteristic to a first order phase transition will be discovered by interferometers, the soft breaking of $U(1)$ cannot be the explanation to the suppressed dark matter-baryon coupling, providing a conclusive negative test for this class of singlet models.
A model of the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone (pNG) dark matter (DM) is proposed. We assume that there is an $SU(2)_g$ global symmetry and a $U(1)_X$ gauge symmetry in the dark sector, and they are spontaneously broken into a $U(1)_D$ global symmetry after a scalar field develops a vacuum expectation value. We add a soft symmetry breaking term that breaks the $SU(2)_g$ global symmetry into the $U(1)_g$ global symmetry explicitly. Our model predicts a stable complex pNG particle under the $U(1)_D$ global symmetry. One of the virtues of the pNG DM models is that the models can explain the current null r…
We consider an explicitly CP-violating model with two Higgs doublets and one complex singlet scalar. The singlet $S$ is charged under a global $\rm U(1)$ symmetry which is softly broken by a mass term $μ^2 S^2+\hc$. Imaginary part of $S$ is a stable dark matter candidate which at the tree level, in the limit of zero momentum transfer, decouples from nucleons naturally satisfying all existing direct detection limits on dark matter scattering cross-section. It is explicitly shown that within this framework in the alignment limit CP-violation is still present in contrast to a popular version of a…
We calculate the leading radiative corrections to the dark-matter-nucleon scattering in the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone dark matter model augmented with a second Higgs doublet (S2HDM). In this model, the cross sections for the scattering of the dark-matter on nuclei vanishes at tree-level in the limit of zero momentum-transfer due to a U(1) symmetry. However, this symmetry is softly broken in order to give a mass to the dark-matter particle. As a consequence, non-vanishing scattering cross sections arise at the loop level. We find that the current cross-section limits from dark-matter direct-detect…
We propose soft breaking mechanism for dark matter (DM) shift symmetry in a class of composite dark matter models, where both DM and the Higgs boson arise as pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons from novel strong dynamics. Our mechanism is utilized to suppress the non-derivative portal coupling between the Higgs boson and DM particle, which can evade the stringent bound of current DM direct detection experiments. Otherwise this non-derivative portal coupling would naturally be at the same order of the Higgs quartic, rendering this class of models under severe crisis. For realizing soft breaking mecha…
We consider an extension of the Standard Model with a complex singlet scalar, where a global $U(1)$ symmetry is explicitly broken to $\mathbb{Z}_3$ symmetry. We study the two-step electroweak phase transition in the model and find that it can be of first-order if the heavy scalar mass falls in the range of $1-2$~TeV and the mixing angle $\left | θ\right |\gtrsim 0.2$ ($11.5^{\circ}$). The Higgs signal strength measurements at the LHC, on the other hand, restrict the mixing angle $\left | θ\right |\lesssim 0.4$ ($23^{\circ}$). Future colliders including high-luminosity LHC can probe the remaini…

Singlet scalar Dark Matter can naturally arise in composite Higgs models as an additional stable pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson. We study the properties of such a candidate in a model based on $SU(6)/SO(6)$, with the light quark masses generated by 4-fermion interactions. The presence of non-linearities in the couplings allows to saturate the relic density for masses $400 < m_{\rm DM} < 1000$ GeV, and survive the bound from Direct Detection and Indirect Detection. The viable parameter regions are in reach of the sensitivities of future upgrades, like XENONnT and LZ.
The scotogenic model of neutrino mass is modified so that the dark Majorana fermion singlet $S$ which makes the neutrino massive is itself generated in one loop. This is accomplished by having $Z_6$ lepton symmetry softly broken to $Z_2$ in the scalar sector by a unique quadratic term. It is shown that $S$ is a viable freeze-in dark-matter candidate through Higgs decay.
Axion cosmology is reexamined taking into account effect of kinetic pseudo Nambu-Goldstone modes, with its importance recently pointed out. When Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry is broken by a chiral U(1) singlet, it is found that the effect of kinetic Nambu-Goldstone mode makes the axion dark matter untenable. When PQ symmetry is extended and is broken by two singlets, we find axion cosmology to work, but there are several differences from the axion cosmology studied in the literature. The differences are (1) ordinary type of dark matter scaling as $1/{\rm cosmic \; scale\; factor}^3$ arising from …
We study the Leptogenesis and Dark Matter in the presence of an extra singlet complex scalar field in an extended discrete $\mathcal{Z_{\rm 3}}$ symmetry. The vacuum expectation value of the new scalar spontaneously breaks the $\mathcal{Z_{\rm 3}}$ symmetry. A remnant CP-like $\mathcal{Z_{\rm 2}}$ symmetry stabilizes the imaginary part of the complex scalar field which can act as a pseudo-Goldstone DM. The real part of the complex scalar couples to RHN opens up new decay channels which can lead to a larger CP-violation in generating the lepton asymmetry. Thus the singlet complex scalar plays a…
Global $SU(3)_C\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y$ linear sigma model: axial-vector Ward Takahashi identities, and decoupling of certain heavy BSM particles due to the Goldstone theorem
In the framework of seesaw neutrino masses from heavy fermion triplets $(Σ^+,Σ^0,Σ^-)$, the addition of a light fermion singlet $N$ and a heavy scalar triplet $(ρ^+,ρ^0,ρ^-)$ has some important consequences. The new particles are assumed to be odd under a new $Z_2$ symmetry which is only broken softly, both explicitly and spontaneously. With $N-Σ^0$ mixing, freeze-in long-lived dark matter through Higgs decay becomes possible. At the same time, the $W$ mass is shifted slightly upward, as suggested by a recent precision measurement.
We investigate a possible realization of pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone (pNG) dark matter in the framework of a singlet-extended 2 Higgs doublet model (S2HDM). pNG dark matter gained attraction due to the fact that direct-detection constraints can be avoided naturally because of the momentum-suppressed scattering cross sections, whereas the relic abundance of dark matter can nevertheless be accounted for via the usual thermal freeze-out mechanism. We confront the S2HDM with a multitude of theoretical and experimental constraints, paying special attention to the theoretical limitations on the scalar po…
Pseudo-Goldstone dark matter is a thermal relic with momentum-suppressed direct-detection cross section. We study the most general model of pseudo-Goldstone dark matter arising from the complex-singlet extension of the Standard Model. The new U(1) symmetry of the model is explicitly broken down to a CP-like symmetry stabilising dark matter. We study the interplay of direct-detection constraints with the strength of cosmic phase transitions and possible gravitational-wave signals. While large U(1)-breaking interactions can generate a large direct-detection cross section, there are blind spots w…
