With both nebular- and stellar-derived abundances of $\lesssim$ 1/10 Zsun and low foreground extinction, Sextans A is a prime candidate to replace the Small Magellanic Cloud as reservoir of metal-poor massive stars and reference to study the metal-poor Universe. We report the discovery of two early-O type stars in Sextans A, the earliest O-stars with metallicity < 1/7 Zsun known to date, and two additional O9 stars. Colour-excess estimates towards individual targets, enabled by spectral typing, manifest that internal reddening is neither uniform nor negligible. The four targets define a new region of star formation far from the optically-brightest centre of the galaxy and from its conspicuous HII shells, but not devoid of neutral hydrogen. In fact, we detect a spatial correlation between OB-stars and HI in Sextans A and other dIrr's that leads us to propose that the neutral phase may be fundamental to star formation in low-density environments. According to the existing evidence at least two of the targets formed in isolation, thus suggestive of an stochastic sampling of the initial mass function that would enable low-mass galaxies like Sextans A to form very massive stars. The discovery of these four stars provide spatially-resolved, spectroscopic confirmation of recent findings suggesting that dwarf galaxies can sustain star formation despite the low density of the gas phase.
We present results from deep and very spatially extended CTIO/DECam $g$ and $r$ photometry (reaching out to $\sim$ 2 mag below the oldest MSTO and covering $\sim$ 20 deg$^2$) around the Sextans dSph. We use this data-set to study the structural properties of Sextans overall stellar population and its different stellar evolutionary phases, as well as to search for signs of tidal disturbance from the MW, which would indicate departure from dynamical equilibrium. We perform the most accurate structural analysis to-date of Sextans' stellar components by applying Bayesian MCMC methods to the indivi…
We present a detailed study of the stellar and HI structure of the dwarf irregular galaxies SextansA and SextansB, members of the NGC3109 association. We use newly obtained deep (r~26.5) and wide field g,r photometry to extend the Surface Brightness (SB) profiles of the two galaxies down to mu_V~ 31.0 mag/arcsec^2. We find that both galaxies are significantly more extended than what previously traced with surface photometry, out to ~4 kpc from their centers along their major axis. Older stars are found to have more extended distribution with respect to younger populations. We obtain the first …
A large extension of the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy, 7 sq degrees, has been surveyed for variable stars using the Dark Energy Camera at the Blanco Telescope in Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, Chile. We report 7 Anomalous Cepheids, 199 RR Lyrae stars and 16 dwarf Cepheids in the field. This is only the fifth extra-galactic systems in which dwarf Cepheids have been systematically searched. Henceforth, the new stars increase the census of stars coming from different environments that can be used to asses the advantages and limitations of using dwarf Cepheids as standard candles in p…
We use Gaia EDR3 data to identify stars associated with six classical dwarf spheroidals (Draco, Ursa Minor, Sextans, Sculptor, Fornax, Carina) at their outermost radii, beyond their nominal King stellar limiting radius. For all of the dSphs examined, we find radial velocity matches with stars residing beyond the King limiting radius and with $> 50\%$ astrometric probability (four in Draco, two in Ursa Minor, eight in Sextans, two in Sculptor, twelve in Fornax, and five in Carina), indicating that these stars are associated with their respective dwarf spheroidals (dSphs) at high probability. We…

We present the deep and wide $V$ and $I_c$ photometry of the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph) taken by Suprime-Cam imager on the Subaru Telescope, which extends out to the tidal radius. The colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) reaches two magnitudes below the main sequence (MS) turn-off, showing a steep red giant branch, blue and red horizontal branch (HB), sub-giant branch (SGB), MS, and blue stragglers (BS). We construct the radial profile of each evolutionary phase and demonstrate that blue HB stars are more spatially extended, while red HB stars are more centrally concentrated than the oth…
Galaxy haloes contain fundamental clues about the galaxy formation and evolution process: hierarchical cosmological models predict haloes to be ubiquitous, and to be (at least in part) the product of past merger and/or accretion events. The advent of wide-field surveys in the last two decades has revolutionized our view of our own Galaxy and its closest "sister", Andromeda, revealing copious tidal streams from past and ongoing accretion episodes, as well as doubling the number of their known faint satellites. The focus shall now be shifted to galaxy haloes beyond the Local Group: resolving ind…
This paper focuses on NGC 1533 and the pair IC 2038 and IC 2039 in Dorado a nearby, clumpy, still un-virialized group. We obtained their surface photometry from deep OmegaCAM@ESO-VST images in g and r bands. For NGC 1533, we map the surface brightness down to $μ_g \simeq 30.11$ mag/arcsec$^{2}$ and $μ_r \simeq 28.87$ mag/arcsec$^{2}$ and out to about $4R_e$. At such faint levels the structure of NGC 1533 appear amazingly disturbed with clear structural asymmetry between inner and outer isophotes in the North-East direction. We detect new spiral arm-like tails in the outskirts, which might like…

We investigate the evolution of galactic disks in N-body Tree-SPH simulations. We find that disks, initially truncated at three scale-lengths, can triple their radial extent, solely driven by secular evolution. Both Type I (single exponential) and Type II (down-turning) observed disk surface-brightness profiles can be explained by our findings. We relate these results to the strong angular momentum outward transfer, resulting from torques and radial migration associated with multiple patterns, such as central bars and spiral waves of different multiplicity. We show that even for stars ending u…
Most of the massive star-forming galaxies are found to have `inside-out' stellar mass growth modes, which means the inner parts of the galaxies mainly consist of the older stellar population, while the star forming in the outskirt of the galaxy is still ongoing. The high-resolution HST images from Hubble Deep UV Legacy Survey (HDUV) and Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) projects with the unprecedented depth in both F275W and F160W bands are the perfect data sets to study the forming and formed stellar distribution directly. We selected the low redshift ($…
Using the exquisite depth of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF12 programme) dataset, we explore the ongoing assembly of the outermost regions of the most massive galaxies ($\rm M_{\rm stellar}\geq$ 5$\times$10$^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$) at $z \leq$ 1. The outskirts of massive objects, particularly Early-Types Galaxies (ETGs), are expected to suffer a dramatic transformation across cosmic time due to continuous accretion of small galaxies. HUDF imaging allows us to study this process at intermediate redshifts in 6 massive galaxies, exploring the individual surface brightness profiles out to $\sim$25 e…
The outskirts of galaxies have been studied from multiple perspectives for the past few decades. However, it is still unknown if all galaxies have clear-cut edges like everyday objects. We address this question by developing physically motivated criteria to define the edges of galaxies. Based on the gas density threshold required for star formation, we define the edge of a galaxy as the outermost radial location associated with a significant drop in either past or ongoing in-situ star formation. We explore $\sim$1000 low-inclination galaxies with a wide range in morphology (dwarfs to elliptica…
Young Massive Clusters (YMCs) and Super Star Clusters (SSCs) represent an extreme mode of star formation. Far-infrared imaging of the Magellanic Clouds has identified one potential embedded SSC, HSO BMHERICC J72.971176-69.391112 (HH in short), in the south-west outskirts of the Large Magellanic Cloud. We present Gemini Flamingos 2 and GSAOI near-infrared imaging of a 3'x3' region around HH in order to characterize the stellar content of the cluster. The stellar content is probed down to 1.5 Msun. We find substantial dust extinction across the cluster region, extending up to A_K of 3. Deeply em…
Context: Deep GALEX UV data show that the extreme outskirts of some spiral galaxies are teeming with star formation. Such young stellar populations evolving so far away from the bulk of their host galaxies challenge our overall understanding of how star formation proceeds at galactic scales. It is at present unclear whether our own Milky Way may also exhibit ongoing and recent star formation beyond the conventional edge of the disk ($\sim 15$ kpc). Aims: Using \textit{Gaia} DR2 data, we aim to determine if such a population is present in the Galactic halo, beyond the nominal radius of the Milk…
We present new two-fluid models of accretion disks in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that aim to address the long-standing problem of Toomre instability in AGN outskirts. In the spirit of earlier works by Sirko & Goodman and others, we argue that Toomre instability is eventually self-regulated via feedback produced by fragmentation and its aftermath. Unlike past semianalytic models, which (i) adopt local prescriptions to connect star formation rates to heat feedback, and (ii) assume that AGN disks self-regulate to a star-forming steady state (with Toomre parameter Q=1), we find that feedback pr…
Exploiting a mass complete (M_*>10^(10.25)M_sun) sample at 0.03<z<0.11 drawn from the Padova Millennium Galaxy Group Catalog (PM2GC), we use the (U-B)_rf color and morphologies to characterize galaxies, in particular those that show signs of an ongoing or recent transformation of their star formation activity and/or morphology - green galaxies, red passive late types, and blue star-forming early types. Color fractions depend on mass and only for M_*<10^(10.7)M_sun on environment. The incidence of red galaxies increases with increasing mass, and, for M_*<10^(10.7)M_sun, decreases toward the gro…
The formaldehyde $\rm H_2CO(1_{10} - 1_{11})$ absorption line and H$110α$ radio recombination line (RRL) have been observed toward the Aquila Molecular Cloud using the Nanshan 25 m telescope operated by the Xinjiang Astronomical Observatory CAS. These first observations of the $\rm H_2CO$ $(1_{10} - 1_{11})$ absorption line determine the extent of the molecular regions that are affected by the ongoing star formation in the Aquila molecular complex and show some of the dynamic properties. The distribution of the excitation temperature $T_{ex}$ for $\rm H_2CO$ identifies the two known star forma…
We present and analyse the photometric properties of a nearly complete sample of blue compact dwarf (BCD) and irregular galaxies in the Virgo cluster from multi-band SDSS images. Our study intends to shed light on the ongoing debate of whether a structural evolution from present-day star-forming dwarf galaxies in a cluster environment into ordinary early-type dwarf galaxies is possible based on the structural properties. For this purpose, we decompose the surface brightness profiles of the BCDs into the luminosity contribution of the starburst component and that of their underlying low surface…
In this study we present high-resolution VIsible Multi-Object Spectrograph integral field unit spectroscopy (VIMOS-IFU) of the extremely metal-poor HII/blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy Tol 65. The optical appearance of this galaxy shows clearly a cometary morphology with a bright main body and an extended and diffuse stellar tail. We focus on the detection of metallicity gradients or inhomogeneities as expected if the ongoing star-formation activity is sustained by the infall/accretion of metal-poor gas. No evidences of significant spatial variations of abundances were found within our uncertai…
We use data from the Sydney-AAO Multi-Object Integral Field Spectrograph (SAMI) Galaxy Survey and the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey to investigate the spatially-resolved signatures of the environmental quenching of star formation in galaxies. Using dust-corrected measurements of the distribution of H$α$ emission we measure the radial profiles of star formation in a sample of 201 star-forming galaxies covering three orders of magnitude in stellar mass (M$_{*}$; $10^{8.1}$-$10^{10.95}\, $M$_{\odot}$) and in $5^{th}$ nearest neighbour local environment density ($Σ_{5}$; $10^{-1.3}$-$10^{…
