Transition from a split to a forward kinetic energy cascade system is explored in the context of rotating turbulence using direct numerical simulations with a three-dimensional isotropic random force uncorrelated with the velocity field. Our parametric study covers confinement effects in large aspect ratio domains and a broad range of rotation rates. Results indicate that for fixed geometrical dimensions the Rossby number acts as a control parameter, whereas for a fixed Rossby number the product of the domain size along the rotation axis and forcing wavenumber governs the amount of energy that cascades inversely. The regime transition criterion hence depends on both control parameters.
The effect of helicity (velocity-vorticity correlations) is studied in direct numerical simulations of rotating turbulence down to Rossby numbers of 0.02. The results suggest that the presence of net helicity plays an important role in the dynamics of the flow. In particular, at small Rossby number, the energy cascades to large scales, as expected, but helicity then can dominate the cascade to small scales. A phenomenological interpretation in terms of a direct cascade of helicity slowed down by wave-eddy interactions leads to the prediction of new inertial indices for the small-scale energy a…
We study forced, rapildy rotating and stably stratified turbulence in an elongated domain using an asymptotic expansion at simultaneously low Rossby number $Ro\ll1$ and large domain height compared to the energy injection scale, $h=H/\ell_{in}\gg1$. The resulting equations depend on the parameter $λ=(h Ro )^{-1}$ and the Froude number $Fr$. An extensive set of direct numerical simulations (DNS) is performed to explore the parameter space $(λ,Fr)$. We show that a forward energy cascade occurs in one region of this space, and a split energy cascade outside it. At weak stratification (large $Fr$)…
We study the scaling behaviors in the wind velocity time series collected at the atmospheric surface layer and compare them with two commonly used cascade models, the truncated stable distribution and the log-normal model. Results show that although both models can describe the change of probability density functions from non-Gaussian to Gaussian like distributions with the increase of time scale, they can not fit the scaling behaviors observed in the probability of return and in the moments at the same time. This work provides some clues on the understanding of cascade process in the atmosphe…
We inquire about the properties of 2d Navier-Stokes turbulence simultaneously forced at small and large scales. The background motivation comes by observational results on atmospheric turbulence. We show that the velocity field is amenable to the sum of two auxiliary velocity fields forced at large and small scale and exhibiting a direct-enstrophy and an inverse-energy cascade, respectively. Remarkably, the two auxiliary fields reconcile universal properties of fluxes with positive statistical correlation in the inertial range.
During direct numerical simulation of the isotropic turbulence of surface gravity waves in the framework of Hamiltonian equations formation of the long wave background or condensate was observed. Exponents of the direct cascade spectra at the different levels of an artificial condensate suppression show a tendency to become closer to the prediction of the wave turbulence theory at lower levels of condensate. A simple qualitative explanation of the mechanism of this phenomenon is proposed.
We present results from two 1536^3 direct numerical simulations of rotating turbulence where both energy and helicity are injected into the flow by an external forcing. The dual cascade of energy and helicity towards smaller scales observed in isotropic and homogeneous turbulence is broken in the presence of rotation, with the development of an inverse cascade of energy now coexisting with direct cascades of energy and helicity. In the direct cascade range, the flux of helicity dominates over that of energy at low Rossby number. These cascades have several consequences for the statistics of th…
The process of the kinetic energy and kinetic helicity transfer over the spectrum in an incompressible, rapidly rotating turbulent flow is considered. An analogue of the Fjortoft theorem for 3D rapidly rotating turbulence is proposed. It is shown that, similar to 2D turbulence, there are two cascades simultaneously: the inverse cascade of the kinetic energy and the direct cascade of the kinetic helicity, which in the case of 2D turbulence corresponds to the cascade of enstrophy. The proposed scenario is in agreement with our earlier calculations, some recent numerical simulations, and physical…
Instabilities of fluid flows often generate turbulence. Using extensive direct numerical simulations, we study two-dimensional turbulence driven by a wavenumber-localised instability superposed on stochastic forcing, in contrast to previous studies of state-independent forcing. As the contribution of the instability forcing, measured by a parameter $γ$, increases, the system undergoes two transitions. For $γ$ below a first threshold, a regular large-scale vortex condensate forms. Above this threshold, shielded vortices (SVs) emerge within the condensate. At a second, larger value of $γ$, the c…
This paper is the forth part of our series of work, is devoted to the analysis on the multiscales and cascade aspects of the statistical theory of isotropic turbulence based on the new Sedov-type solution. In this paper, we use the explicit map method to analyse the nonlinear dynamical behaviour for cascade in isotorpic turbulence. This deductive scale analysis is shown to provide the first visual evidence of the celebrated Richardson cascade, and reveals in partcular its multiscale character. The results also indicate that the energy cascading process has remarkable similarities with the dete…
Using direct numerical simulation of hydrodynamic turbulence with helicity forcing applied at all scales, a near-maximum helical turbulent state is obtained, with an inverse energy cascade at scales larger than the energy forcing scale and a forward helicity cascade at scales smaller than the energy forcing scale. In contrast to previous studies using decimated triads, our simulations contain all possible triads. By computing the shell-to-shell energy fluxes, we show that the inverse energy cascade results from weakly non-local interactions among homochiral triads. Varying the helicity injecti…
Results of direct numerical simulation of isotropic turbulence of surface gravity waves in the framework of Hamiltonian equations are presented. For the first time simultaneous formation of both direct and inverse cascades was observed in the framework of primordial dynamical equations. At the same time, strong long waves background was developed. It was shown, that obtained Kolmogorov spectra are very sensitive to the presence of this condensate. Such situation has to be typical for experimental wave tanks, flumes, and small lakes.
This investigation presents evidence of the relation between the dynamics of intense events in small-scale turbulence and the energy cascade. We use the generalised (Hölder) means to track the temporal evolution of intense events of the enstrophy and the dissipation in direct numerical simulations of isotropic turbulence. We show that these events are modulated by large-scale fluctuations, and that their evolution is consistent with a local multiplicative cascade, as hypothesised by a broad class of intermittency models of turbulence.
In this Letter we show that a bifurcation cascade and fully sustained turbulence can share the phase space of a fluid flow system, resulting in the presence of competing stable attractors. We analyse the toroidal pipe flow, which undergoes subcritical transition to turbulence at low pipe curvatures and supercritical transition at high curvatures, as was previously documented. We provide decisive evidence that the nature of the supercritical transition is of Ruelle--Takens type and that, in a narrow range of intermediate curvatures, its dynamics competes with that of sustained turbulence emergi…
We present two phenomenological models for 2D turbulence in which the energy spectrum obeys a nonlinear fourth-order and a second-order differential equations respectively. Both equations respect the scaling properties of the original Navier-Stokes equations and it has both the -5/3 inverse-cascade and t -3 direct-cascade spectra. In addition, the fourth order equation has Raleigh-Jeans thermodynamic distributions, as exact steady state solutions. We use the fourth-order model to derive a relation between the direct-cascade and the inverse-cascade Kolmogorov constants which is in a good qualit…
We investigate three-dimensional quantum turbulence as described by the Gross-Pitaevskii model using the analytical method exploited in the Onsager "ideal turbulence" theory. We derive the scale-independence of the scale-to-scale kinetic energy flux and establish a double-cascade scenario: at scales much larger than the mean intervortex $\ell_i$, the Richardson cascade becomes dominant, whereas at scales much smaller than $\ell_i$, another type of cascade is induced by quantum stress. We then evaluate the corresponding velocity power spectrum using a phenomenological argument. The relation bet…
We report the generation of large coherent vortices via inverse energy cascade in Faraday wave driven turbulence. The motion of floaters in the Faraday waves is three dimensional but its horizontal velocity fluctuations show unexpected similarity with two-dimensional turbulence. The inverse cascade is detected by measuring frequency spectra of the Lagrangian velocity, and it is confirmed by computing the third moment of the horizontal velocity fluctuations. This is observed in deep water in a broad range of wavelengths. The results broaden the scope of recent findings on Faraday waves in thin …
Intermittency (externally induced) in the two-dimensional (2D) enstrophy cascade is shown to be able to maintain a finite enstrophy along with a vorticity conservation anomaly. Intermittency mechanisms of three-dimensional (3D) energy cascade and 2D enstrophy cascade in fully-developed turbulence (FDT) seem to have some universal features. The parabolic-profile approximation (PPA) for the singularity spectrum f(a) in multi-fractal model is used and extended to the appropriate microscale regimes to exhibit these features. The PPA is also shown to afford, unlike the generic multi-fractal model, …
The dual cascade of energy and enstrophy in 2D turbulence cannot easily be understood in terms of an analog to the Richardson-Kolmogorov scenario describing the energy cascade in 3D turbulence. The coherent up- and downscale fluxes points to non-locality of interactions in spectral space, and thus the specific spatial structure of the flow could be important. Shell models, which lack spacial structure and have only local interactions in spectral space, indeed fail in reproducing the correct scaling for the inverse cascade of energy. In order to exclude the possibility that non-locality of inte…
Turbulence is defined as an eddy-like state of fluid motion where the inertial-vortex forces of the eddies are larger than any other forces that tend to damp the eddies out. By this definition, turbulence always cascades from small scales (where the vorticity is created) to larger scales (where other forces dominate and the turbulence fossilizes). Fossil turbulence is any perturbation in a hydrophysical field produced by turbulence that persists after the fluid is no longer turbulent at the scale of the perturbation. Fossil turbulence patterns and fossil turbulence waves preserve and propagate…
We study the statistics of free-surface turbulence at large Reynolds numbers produced by direct numerical simulations in a fluid layer at different thickness with fixed characteristic forcing scale. We observe the production of a transient inverse cascade, with a duration which depends on the thickness of the layer, followed by a transition to three-dimensional turbulence initially produced close to the bottom, no-slip boundary. By switching off the forcing, we study the decaying turbulent regime and we find that it cannot be described by an exponential law. Our results show that boundary cond…
High resolution direct numerical simulations of two-dimensional turbulence in stationary conditions are presented. The development of an energy-enstrophy double cascade is studied and found to be compatible with the classical Kraichnan theory in the limit of extended inertial ranges. The analysis of the joint distribution of energy and enstrophy fluxes in physical space reveals a small value of cross correlation. This result supports many experimental and numerical studies where only one cascade is generated.
We investigate a quite strong turbulence in a supercritical fluid near a gas-liquid critical point. Specifically, we consider a case in which the Kolmogorov scale is much smaller than the equilibrium correlation length $ξ$. Although equilibrium critical fluctuations are destroyed by turbulence, $ξ$ still provides a crossover length scale between two types of energy cascade. At scales much larger than $ξ$, the Richardson cascade becomes dominant, whereas at scales much smaller than $ξ$, another type of cascade, which we call the van der Waals cascade, is induced by density fluctuations. Experim…
We study stationary solutions in the differential kinetic equation, which was introduced in for description of a local dual cascade wave turbulence. We give a full classification of single-cascade states in which there is a finite flux of only one conserved quantity. Analysis of the steady-state spectrum is based on a phase-space analysis of orbits of the underlying dynamical system. The orbits of the dynamical system demonstrate the blow-up behaviour which corresponds to a "sharp front" where the spectrum vanishes at a finite wave number. The roles of the KZ and thermodynamic scaling as inter…
The problem of the occurrence of an energy cascade for Alfvénic turbulence in solar wind plasmas was hystorically addressed by using phenomenological arguments based to the weakness of nonlinear interactions and the anisotropy of the cascade in wave vectors space. Here, this paradox is reviewed through the formal derivation of a Yaglom relation from anisotropic Magnetohydrodynamic equation. The Yaglom relation involves a third-order moment calculated from velocity and magnetic fields and involving both Elsässer vector fields, and is particularly useful to be used as far as spacecraft observati…
We investigate the dynamics of energy cascades in quantum turbulence by directly observing the vorticity distributions in numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. By Fourier filtering each scale of the vorticity distribution, we find that antiparallel vortex tubes at a large scale generate small-scale vortex tubes orthogonal to those at the large scale, which is a manifestation of the energy cascade from large to small scales. We reveal the dynamics of quantized vortex lines in these processes.
We refute the criticism expressed in a Comment by Krstulovic, L'vov, and Nazarenko [arXiv:2107.10598] on our paper [Phys. Rev. E 103, 023106 (2021)]. We first show that quantization of circulation is not ignored in our analysis. Then, we propose a more sophisticated analysis to avoid a subtle problem with the regularity of the velocity field. We thus defend the main results of our paper, which predicts the double-cascade scenario where the quantum stress cascade follows the Richardson cascade. We also provide a conjecture on the relation between the Kelvin-wave cascade and the quantum stress c…
We analyze velocity fluctuations inside coherent vortices generated as a result of the inverse cascade in the two-dimensional ($2d$) turbulence in a finite box. As we demonstrated in \cite{16KL}, the universal velocity profile, established in \cite{14LBFKL}, corresponds to the passive regime of flow fluctuations. The property enables one to calculate correlation functions of the velocity fluctuations in the universal region. We present results of the calculations that demonstrate a non-trivial scaling of the structure function. In addition the calculations reveal strong anisotropy of the struc…
Here we report the first evidence of the inverse energy cascade in a flow dominated by 3D motions. Experiments are performed in thick fluid layers where turbulence is driven electromagnetically. It is shown that if the free surface of the layer is not perturbed, the top part of the layer behaves as quasi-2D and supports the inverse energy cascade regardless of the layer thickness. Well below the surface the cascade survives even in the presence of strong 3D eddies developing when the layer depth exceeds half the forcing scale. In a bounded flow at low bottom dissipation, the inverse energy cas…
We report on the observation of surface gravity wave turbulence at scales larger than the forcing ones in a large basin. In addition to the downscale transfer usually reported in gravity wave turbulence, an upscale transfer is observed, interpreted as the inverse cascade of weak turbulence theory. A steady state is achieved when the inverse cascade reaches a scale in between the forcing wavelength and the basin size, but far from the latter. This inverse cascade saturation, which depends on the wave steepness, is probably due to the emergence of nonlinear dissipative structures such as sharp-c…
We discuss structure and geometrical characteristics of coherent vortices appearing as a result of the inverse cascade in the two-dimensional turbulence in a finite box. We demonstrate that the universal velocity profile, established previously, corresponds to the passive regime of flow fluctuations. We find the vortex core radius and the vortex size and argue that an amount of the vortices generated in the box depends on the system parameters.
We consider developed turbulence in the 2D Gross-Pitaevsky model, which describes wide classes of phenomena from atomic and optical physics to condensed matter, fluids and plasma. The well-known difficulty of the problem is that the hypothetical local spectra of both inverse and direct cascades in the weak-turbulence approximation carry fluxes which are either zero or have the wrong sign; such spectra cannot be realized. We analytically derive the exact flux constancy laws (analogs of Kolmogorov's 4/5-law for incompressible fluid turbulence), expressed via the fourth-order moment and valid for…
Experiments and numerical simulations of turbulent $^4$He and $^3$He-B have established that, at hydrodynamic length scales larger than the average distance between quantum vortices, the energy spectrum obeys the same 5/3 Kolmogorov law which is observed in the homogeneous isotropic turbulence of ordinary fluids. The importance of the 5/3 law is that it points to the existence of a Richardson energy cascade from large eddies to small eddies. However, there is also evidence of quantum turbulent regimes without Kolmogorov scaling. This raises the important questions of why, in such regimes, the …
Following the exact decomposition in eigenstates of helicity for the Navier-Stokes equations in Fourier space [F. Waleffe, Phys. Fluids A 4, 350 (1992)] we introduce a modified version of helical shell models for turbulence with non-local triadic interactions. By using both an analytical argument and numerical simulation, we show that there exists a class of models, with a specific helical structure, that exhibits a statistically stable inverse energy cascade, in close analogy with that predicted for the Navier-Stokes equations restricted to the same helical interactions. We further support th…
We demonstrate that like in the forward cascade of three dimensional turbulence that displays intermittency (lack of self-similarity) due to the concentration of energy dissipation in a small set of fractal dimension less than three, the inverse cascade of two-dimensional turbulence can also display lack of self-similarity and intermittency if the energy injection is constrained in a fractal set of dimension less than two. A series of numerical simulations of two dimensional turbulence are examined, using different forcing functions of the same forcing length-scale but different fractal dimens…
Statistical features of homogeneous, isotropic, two-dimensional turbulence is discussed on the basis of a set of direct numerical simulations up to the unprecedented resolution $32768^2$. By forcing the system at intermediate scales, narrow but clear inertial ranges develop both for the inverse and for direct cascades where the two Kolmogorov laws for structure functions are, for the first time, simultaneously observed. The inverse cascade spectrum is found to be consistent with Kolmogorov-Kraichnan prediction and is robust with respect the presence of an enstrophy flux. The direct cascade is …
A two-dimensional generalized cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with complex coefficients for the group dispersion and nonlinear terms is used to investigate the evolution of a finite-amplitude localized initial perturbation. It is found that modulation of the latter can lead to side-band formation, wave condensation, collapse, turbulence, and inverse cascade, although not all together nor in that order.
Finite-temperature quantum turbulence is often described in terms of two immiscible fluids that can flow with a non-zero mean relative velocity. Such out-of-equilibrium state is known as counterflow superfluid turbulence. We report here the emergence of a counterflow-induced inverse energy cascade in three-dimensional superfluid flows by performing extensive numerical simulations of the Hall-Vinen-Bekarevich-Khalatnikov model. As the intensity of the mean counterflow is increased, an abrupt transition, from a fully three-dimensional turbulent flow to a quasi two-dimensional system exhibiting a…
In a recent paper [T. Tanogami Phys. Rev. E 103, 023106 ] proposes a scenario for quantum turbulence where the energy spectrum at scales smaller than the inter-vortex distance is dominated by a quantum stress cascade, in opposition to Kelvin wave cascade predictions. The purpose of the present comment is to highlight some physical issues in the derivation of the quantum stress cascade, in particular to stress that quantization of circulation has been ignored.
Large-scale turbulence in fluid layers and other quasi-two-dimensional compressible systems consists of planar vortices and waves. Separately, wave turbulence usually produces a direct energy cascade, while solenoidal planar turbulence transports energy to large scales by an inverse cascade. Here, we consider turbulence at finite Mach numbers when the interaction between acoustic waves and vortices is substantial. We employ solenoidal pumping at intermediate scales and show how both direct and inverse energy cascades are formed starting from the pumping scale. We show that there is an inverse …
We perform experiments to study the inverse cascade regime of gravity wave turbulence on the surface of a fluid. Surface waves are forced at an intermediate scale corresponding to the gravity-capillary wavelength. In response to this forcing, waves at larger scales are observed. The spectrum of their amplitudes exhibits a frequency-power law at high enough forcing. Both observations are ascribed to the upscale wave action transfers of gravity wave turbulence. The spectrum exponent is close to the value predicted by the weak turbulence theory. The spectrum amplitude is found to scale linearly w…
We performed numerical simulations of decaying quantum turbulence by using a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation, that includes a beyond mean field correction and a nonlocal interaction potential. The nonlocal potential is chosen in order to mimic He II by introducing a roton minimum in the excitation spectrum. We observe that at large scales the statistical behavior of the flow is independent of the interaction potential, but at scales smaller than the intervortex distance a Kelvin wave cascade is enhanced in the generalized model. In this range, the incompressible kinetic energy spectrum o…
Three-dimensional (3D) turbulence is characterized by a dual forward cascade of both kinetic energy and helicity, a second inviscid flow invariant, from the integral scale of motion to the viscous dissipative scale. In helical flows, however, such as strongly rotating flows with broken mirror symmetry, an inverse energy cascade can be observed analogous to that of two-dimensional turbulence (2D) where a second positive-definite flow invariant, enstrophy, unlike helicity in 3D, effectively blocks the forward cascade of energy. In the spectral-helical decomposition of the Navier-Stokes equation …
While in classical turbulence helicity depletes nonlinearity and can alter the evolution of turbulent flows, in quantum turbulence its role is not fully understood. We present numerical simulations of the free decay of a helical quantum turbulent flow using the Gross-Pitaevskii equation at high spatial resolution. The evolution has remarkable similarities with classical flows, which go as far as displaying a dual transfer of incompressible kinetic energy and helicity to small scales. Spatio-temporal analysis indicates that both quantities are dissipated at small scales through non-linear excit…
The essence of turbulent flow is the conveyance of energy through the formation, interaction, and destruction of eddies over a wide range of spatial scales--from the largest scales where energy is injected, down to the smallest scales where it is dissipated through viscosity. Currently, there is no mechanistic framework that captures how the interactions of vortices drive this cascade. We show that iterations of the elliptical instability, arising from the interactions between counter-rotating vortices, lead to the emergence of turbulence. We demonstrate how the nonlinear development of the el…
This thesis presents an experimental study of the inverse energy cascade as it occurs in an electromagnetically forced soap film. It focuses on characterizing important features of the inverse cascade such as it's range, how energy is distributed over the range and how energy flows through the range. The thesis also probes the assumption of scale invariance that is associated with the existence of an inverse cascade. These investigations demonstrate that the extent of the inverse cascade range and the behavior of the energy distribution are in agreement with dimensional predictions. The energy…
The question of how nonlinear interactions redistribute the energy of fluctuations across available degrees of freedom is of fundamental importance in the study of turbulence and transport in magnetized weakly collisional plasmas, ranging from space settings to fusion devices. In this letter, we present a theory for the dual cascade found in such plasmas, which predicts a range of new behavior that distinguishes this cascade from that of neutral fluid turbulence. These phenomena are explained in terms of the constrained nature of spectral transfer in nonlinear gyrokinetics. Accompanying this t…
We use the more intuitive approach due to Kolmogorov (and subsequently, Landau in his text on fluid dynamics) to calculate some third-order structure functions for quasi-geostrophic turbulence for the forward cascade of pseudo-potential enstrophy and the inverse energy cascade in quasi-geostrophic turbulence.
We establish a statistical relationship between the inverse energy cascade and the spatial correlations of clustered vortices in two-dimensional quantum turbulence. The Kolmogorov spectrum $k^{-5/3}$ on inertial scales $r$ corresponds to a pair correlation function between the vortices with different signs that decays as a power law with the pair distance given as $r^{-4/3}$. To test these scaling relations, we propose a novel forced and dissipative point vortex model that captures the turbulent dynamics of quantized vortices by the emergent clustering of same-sign vortices. The inverse energy…
We present experimental evidence for a double cascade of kinetic energy in a statistically stationary rotating turbulence experiment. Turbulence is generated by a set of vertical flaps which continuously injects velocity fluctuations towards the center of a rotating water tank. The energy transfers are evaluated from two-point third-order three-component velocity structure functions, which we measure using stereoscopic particle image velocimetry in the rotating frame. Without global rotation, the energy is transferred from large to small scales, as in classical three-dimensional turbulence. Fo…
The genesis, growth and rupture of intracranial aneurysm (IA) are open questions in neurovascular medicine until the present moment. The complexity of aneurysm mechanobiology and pathobiology staggeringly combine intertwining biological and physical processes that are tightly connected. Recently, transition to turbulence in IA blood flow is thought to play a central role in IA growth and rupture as it can be directly linked to endothelial dysfunction. However, the problem of turbulence brings unprecedented complications to the topic. We found turbulence in IA to be of non-Kolmogorov type. For …
We study two dimensional superfluid turbulence by employing an effective description valid in the limit where the density of superfluid vortices is parametrically small. At sufficiently low temperatures the effective description yields an inverse cascade with Kolmogorov energy spectrum $E(k) \sim k^{-5/3}$. Denoting the number of vortices as a function of time by $N(t)$, we find that the vortex annihilation rate scales like $\dot N \sim N^{5/3}$ in states with an inverse cascade and $\dot N \sim N^2$ for laminar flow.
This experimental study analyzes the relationship between the dimensionality of turbulence and the upscale or downscale nature of its energy transfers. We do so by forcing low-$Rm$ magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in a confined channel, while precisely controlling its dimensionality by means of an externally applied magnetic field. We first identify a specific lengthscale $\hat{l}_\perp^c$ that separates smaller three-dimensional structures from larger quasi-two-dimensional ones. We then show that an inverse energy cascade of horizontal kinetic energy along horizontal scales is always obse…
We study numerically a Constantin-Lax-Majda-De Gregorio model generalized by Okamoto, Sakajo and Wunsch, which is a model of fluid turbulence in one dimension with an inviscid conservation law. In the presence of the viscosity and two types of the large-scale forcings, we show that turbulent cascade of the inviscid invariant, which is not limited to quadratic quantity, occurs and that properties of this model's turbulent state are related to singularity of the inviscid case by adopting standard tools of analyzing fluid turbulence.
We present a spatio-temporal analysis of a statistically stationary rotating turbulence experiment, aiming to extract a signature of inertial waves, and to determine the scales and frequencies at which they can be detected. The analysis uses two-point spatial correlations of the temporal Fourier transform of velocity fields obtained from time-resolved stereoscopic particle image velocimetry measurements in the rotating frame. We quantify the degree of anisotropy of turbulence as a function of frequency and spatial scale. We show that this space-time-dependent anisotropy is well described by th…
