This paper gives quantitative global estimates between a time dependent flow on a Riemannian manifold $\left( M\right) $ and the flow of a vector field constructed by truncating the formal Magnus expansion for the logarithm of the flow. As a corollary, we also find quantitative estimates between the composition of the flows of two given time independent vector fields on $M$ and the flow of a truncated version of the Baker-Cambel-Hausdorff-Dynkin expansion associated to the two given vector fields.
We use a new method to give conditions for the existence of a local isometric immersion of a Riemannian $n$-manifold $M$ in $\mathbb{R}^{n+k}$, for a given $n$ and $k$. These equate to the (local) existence of a $k$-tuple of scalar fields on the manifold, satisfying a certain non-linear equation involving the Riemannian curvature tensor of $M$. Setting $k=1$, we proceed to recover the fundamental theorem of hypersurfaces. In the case of manifolds of positive sectional curvature and $n\geq 3$, we reduce the solvability of the Gauss and Codazzi equations to the cancelation of a set of obstructio…
The Ray-Singer analytic torsion is the zeta-function trace of a certain sum of logarithm operators on the de Rham complex. In this note we examine the residue analytic torsion, defined using the residue-trace instead of the spectral zeta function quasi-trace.
Bounds on the logarithmic derivatives of the heat kernel on a compact Riemannian manifolds have been long known, and were recently extended, for the log-gradient and log-Hessian, to general complete Riemannian manifolds. Here, we further extend these bounds to incomplete Riemannan manifolds under the least restrictive condition on the distance to infinity available, for derivatives of all orders. Moreover, we consider not only the usual heat kernel associated to the Laplace-Beltrami operator, but we also allow the addition of a conservative vector field. We show that these bounds are sharp in …
For incomplete sub-Riemannian manifolds, and for an associated second-order hypoelliptic operator, which need not be symmetric, we identify two alternative conditions for the validity of Gaussian-type upper bounds on heat kernels and transition probabilities, with optimal constant in the exponent. Under similar conditions, we obtain the small-time logarithmic asymptotics of the heat kernel, and show concentration of diffusion bridge measures near a path of minimal energy. The first condition requires that we consider points whose distance apart is no greater than the sum of their distances to …
The analysis of manifold-valued data requires efficient tools from Riemannian geometry to cope with the computational complexity at stake. This complexity arises from the always-increasing dimension of the data, and the absence of closed-form expressions to basic operations such as the Riemannian logarithm. In this paper, we adapt a generic numerical scheme recently introduced for computing parallel transport along geodesics in a Riemannian manifold to finite-dimensional manifolds of diffeomorphisms. We provide a qualitative and quantitative analysis of its behavior on high-dimensional manifol…
We study the Riemannian Langevin Algorithm for the problem of sampling from a distribution with density $ν$ with respect to the natural measure on a manifold with metric $g$. We assume that the target density satisfies a log-Sobolev inequality with respect to the metric and prove that the manifold generalization of the Unadjusted Langevin Algorithm converges rapidly to $ν$ for Hessian manifolds. This allows us to reduce the problem of sampling non-smooth (constrained) densities in ${\bf R}^n$ to sampling smooth densities over appropriate manifolds, while needing access only to the gradient of …
