We use the Athens Model Independent Analysis Scheme (AMIAS) to examine the validity of using the Fermi-Watson theorem in the multipole analyses of pion photoproduction and electroproduction data. A standard practice in this field is to fix the multipoles' phases from $πN$ scattering data, making use of the Fermi - Watson theorem. However, these phases are known with limited accuracy and the effect of this uncertainty on the obtained multipole extraction has not been fully explored yet. Using AMIAS we constrain the phases within their experimentally determined uncertainty. We first analyze sets of pseudodata of increasing statistical precision and subsequently we apply the methodology for a re-analysis of the Bates/Mainz electroproduction data. It is found that the uncertainty induced by the $πN$ phases uncertainty to the extracted solutions would be significant only in the analysis of data with much higher precision than the current available experimental data.
Pion electroproduction off the proton is analyzed in a new framework based on a general parametrization of transition amplitudes, including constraints from gauge invariance and threshold behavior. Data with energies $1.13~{\rm GeV}<W<1.6~{\rm GeV}$ and $Q^2$ below $6~{\rm GeV}^2$ are included. The model is an extension of the latest Jülich-Bonn solution incorporating constraints from pion-induced and photoproduction data. Performing large scale fits ($\sim10^5$ data) we find a set of solutions with $χ^2_{\rm dof}=1.69-1.81$ which allows us to assess the systematic uncertainty of the approach.
We measured angular distributions of differential cross section, beam analyzing power, and recoil polarization for neutral pion electroproduction at Q^2 = 1.0 (GeV/c)^2 in 10 bins of W across the Delta resonance. A total of 16 independent response functions were extracted, of which 12 were observed for the first time. Comparisons with recent model calculations show that response functions governed by real parts of interference products are determined relatively well near 1.232 GeV, but variations among models is large for response functions governed by imaginary parts and for both increases ra…
Pion and eta electroproduction data are jointly analyzed for the first time, up to a center-of-mass energy of 1.6 GeV. The framework is a dynamical coupled-channel model, based on the recent Jülich-Bonn-Washington analysis of pion electroproduction data for the same energy range. Comparisons are made to a number of single-channel eta electroproduction fits. By comparing multipoles of comparable fit quality, we find some of these amplitudes are well determined over the near-threshold region, while others will require fits over an extended energy range.
We measured angular distributions of recoil-polarization response functions for neutral pion electroproduction for W=1.23 GeV at Q^2=1.0 (GeV/c)^2, obtaining 14 separated response functions plus 2 Rosenbluth combinations; of these, 12 have been observed for the first time. Dynamical models do not describe quantities governed by imaginary parts of interference products well, indicating the need for adjusting magnitudes and phases for nonresonant amplitudes. We performed a nearly model-independent multipole analysis and obtained values for Re(S1+/M1+)=-(6.84+/-0.15)% and Re(E1+/M1+)=-(2.91+/-0.1…
A novel method for extracting multipole amplitudes in the nucleon resonance region from electroproduction data is presented. The method is based on statistical concepts and it relies heavily on Monte Carlo and simulation techniques; it produces precise identification and determination of the contributing multipole amplitudes in the resonance region and for the first time a rigorous determination of the associated experimental uncertainty. The results are demonstrated to be independent of any model bias. The method is applied in the reanalysis of the $Q^{2}=0.127 GeV^2/c^2$ Bates and Mainz $N\t…
We present a calculation of pion photo- and electroproduction in manifestly Lorentz-invariant baryon chiral perturbation theory up to and including order $q^4$. We fix the low-energy constants by fitting experimental data in all available reaction channels. Our results can be accessed via a web interface, the so-called chiral MAID. We explain how our program works and how it can be used for further analysis.

The polarized longitudinal-transverse structure function $σ_{LT^\prime}$ measures the interference between real and imaginary amplitudes in pion electroproduction and can be used to probe the coupling between resonant and non-resonant processes. We report new measurements of $σ_{LT^\prime}$ in the $N(1440){1/2}^+$ (Roper) resonance region at $Q^2=0.40$ and 0.65 GeV$^2$ for both the $π^0 p$ and $π^+ n$ channels. The experiment was performed at Jefferson Lab with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) using longitudinally polarized electrons at a beam energy of 1.515 GeV. Complete angula…
Transversity generalized parton distributions (GPDs) can be probed in diffractive electro- and photoproduction of two vector mesons on a hadron in kinematics where the two vector mesons are separated by a large rapidity gap. We report on calculations for this process in the case of coherent $ρ^0-ω$ meson production on a deuteron target. Our cross section results show that an electron-ion collider with deuteron beams and forward detectors could probe deuteron transversity GPDs.
We consider threshold pion electroproduction on a proton target for photon virtualities in the region 1-10 GeV$^2$. The S-wave multipoles at threshold, $E_{0+}$ and $L_{0+}$, are calculated using light-cone sum rules.

Impressive progress achieved in the past decade in experimental studies of exclusive meson photoproduction off protons and global multi-channel amplitude analyses has resulted in the discovery of several long-awaited new nucleon resonances, with a decisive impact from the results of $KΛ$ and $KΣ$ photoproduction measured with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. Further extension of these efforts towards combined studies of exclusive meson photo- and electroproduction data off protons will be presented. A new excited state of the nucleon, the $N'(1720)3/2^+$, discovered from combined analyses o…
We present a gauge invariant approach to photoproduction of mesons on nucleons within a chiral unitary framework. The interaction kernel for meson-baryon scattering is derived from the chiral effective Lagrangian and iterated in a Bethe-Salpeter equation. Within the leading order approximation to the interaction kernel, data on kaon photoproduction from SAPHIR, CLAS and CBELSA/TAPS are analyzed in the threshold region. The importance of gauge invariance and the precision of various approximations in the interaction kernel utilized in earlier works are discussed.
Exclusive $π^+π^-p$ photo- and electroproduction data from CLAS have considerably extended the information on the spectrum and structure of nucleon resonances. The data from the $π^+π^-p$ and $Nπ$ channels have provided results on the electrocouplings of most resonances in the mass region up to 1.8 GeV and at photon virtualities up to 5.0 GeV$^2$. The recent CLAS data on $π^+π^-p$ photoproduction have improved knowledge on the photocouplings of nucleon resonances in the mass range of 1.6 GeV $<$ $M_{N^*}$ $<$ 2.0 GeV and on their decays to the $πΔ$ and $ρp$ final hadron states. For the first t…
New cross sections for the reaction $ep \to e'ηp$ are reported for total center of mass energy $W$=1.5--2.3 GeV and invariant squared momentum transfer $Q^2$=0.13--3.3 GeV$^2$. This large kinematic range allows extraction of new information about response functions, photocouplings, and $ηN$ coupling strengths of baryon resonances. A sharp structure is seen at $W\sim$ 1.7 GeV. The shape of the differential cross section is indicative of the presence of a $P$-wave resonance that persists to high $Q^2$. Improved values are derived for the photon coupling amplitude for the $S_{11}$(1535) resonance…
We show that nuclear sigma, omega, and pi mesons can contribute coherently to enhance the electroproduction cross section on nuclei for longitudinal virtual photons at low Q^2 while depleting the cross section for transverse photons. We are able to describe recent HERMES inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering data at low Q^2 and small x using photon-meson and meson-nucleus couplings which are consistent with (but not determined by) existing constraints from meson decay widths, nuclear structure, deep inelastic scattering, and lepton pair production data. We find that while nuclear-coherent pion c…
The results on the photo- and electroexcitation amplitudes of most nucleon resonances in the mass range up to 2.0 GeV determined from the CLAS experimental data on exclusive $π^+π^-p$ photo-/electroproduction off protons in collaboration between the Jefferson Lab and Moscow State University are presented. The first and only available results on electroexcitation amplitudes from CLAS in a wide range of photon virtualities $Q^2$ $<$ 5.0 GeV$^2$ revealed the nucleon resonance structure as a complex interplay between the inner core of three dressed quarks and external meson-baryon cloud. These res…
The analysis of the nine 1-fold differential cross sections for the $γ_{r,v} p \to π^+π^-p$ photo- and electroproduction reactions obtained with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory was carried out with the goal to establish the contributing resonances in the mass range from 1.6~GeV to 1.8~GeV. In order to describe the photo- and electroproduction data with $Q^2$-independent resonance masses and hadronic decay widths in the $Q^2$ range below 1.5~GeV$^2$, it was found that an $N'(1720)3/2^+$ state is required in addition to the already well-established nucleon resonances. This work demonst…
A theory of two-pion photo- and electroproduction off the nucleon is derived considering all explicit three-body mechanisms of the interacting $ππN$ system. The full three-body dynamics of the interacting $ππN$ system is accounted for by the Faddeev-type ordering structure of the Alt-Grassberger-Sandhas equations. The formulation is valid for hadronic two-point and three-point functions dressed by arbitrary internal mechanisms provided all associated electromagnetic currents are constructed to satisfy their respective (generalized) Ward-Takahashi identities. It is shown that coupling the photo…
The reaction p(e,e'p)pi^0 has been studied at Q^2=0.2 (GeV/c)^2 in the region of W=1232 MeV. From measurements left and right of q, cross section asymmetries ρ_LT have been obtained in forward kinematics ρ_LT(θ_π^0=20deg) = (-11.68 +/- 2.36_stat +/- 2.36_sys)$ and backward kinematics ρ_LT(θ_π^0=160deg) =(12.18 +/- 0.27_stat +/- 0.82_sys). Multipole ratios \Re(S_1+^* M_1+)/|M_1+|^2 and \Re(S_0+^* M_1+)/|M_1+|^2 were determined in the framework of the MAID2003 model. The results are in agreement with older data. The unusally strong negative \Re(S_0+^* M_1+)/|M_1+|^2 required to bring also the re…
An instrument of central importance for the strangeness photo- and electroproduction at the 1.5-GeV electron beam of the MAMI accelerator at the Institut für Kernphysik in Mainz, Germany, is the newly installed magnetic spectrometer Kaos that is operated by the A1 collaboration in $(e,e'K)$ reactions on the proton or light nuclei. Its compact design and its capability to detect negative and positive charged particles simultaneously complements the existing spectrometers. The strangeness program performed with Kaos in 2008-9 is addressing some important issues in the field of elementary kaon ph…
Electrocouplings of excited proton states with masses less than 1.8 GeV were determined for the first time from the CLAS data on $π^+π^-p$ electroproduction at photon virtualities $Q^2$ $<$ 1.5 GeV$^2$. Electrocouplings were obtained from a combined fit of all available observables within the framework of a phenomenological reaction model.
The transition γ_{v}pN^* amplitudes (electrocouplings) for prominent excited nucleon states obtained in a wide area of photon virtualities offer valuable information for the exploration of the N^* structure at different distances and allow us to access the complex dynamics of non-perturbative strong interaction. The current status in the studies of γ_{v}pN^* electrocouplings from the data on exclusive meson electroproduction off protons measured with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab is presented. The impact of these results on exploration of the N^* structure is discussed.
