With the recent advancement in environmental sensing, vehicle control and vehicle-infrastructure cooperation technologies, more and more autonomous driving companies start to put their intelligent cars into road test. But in the near future, we will face a heterogeneous traffic with both intelligent connected vehicles and human vehicles. In this paper, we investigated the impacts of four collision avoidance algorithms under different intelligent connected vehicles market penetration rate. A customized simulation platform is built, in which a platoon can be initiated with many key parameters. For every short time interval, the dynamics of vehicles are updated and input in a kinematics model. If a collision occurs, the energy loss is calculated to represent the crash severity. Four collision avoidance algorithms are chosen and compared in terms of the crash rate and severity at different market penetration rate and different locations of the platoon. The results generate interesting debates on the issues of heterogeneous platoon safety.
Large steps are being taken by the industry and R&D organizations in automated driving technology development, as well as in setting up appropriate scenario-based safety assessment methods. In this paper a concept framework is proposed for a very specific group of vehicles: trucks in a platoon enabled by vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication. The basis is formed by previously proposed scenario-based assessment methods for individual automated driving vehicles. These methods however do not consider the inter-vehicle communication component. It is shown how V2V communication interconnects vehic…

In this paper, we re-examine the notion of string stability as it relates to safety by providing an upper bound on the maximum spacing error of any vehicle in a homogeneous platoon in terms of the input of the leading vehicle. We reinforce our previous work on lossy CACC platoons by accommodating for burst-noise behavior in the V2V link. Further, through Monte Carlo type simulations, we demonstrate that connectivity can enhance traffic mobility and safety in a CACC string even when the deceleration capabilities of the vehicles in the platoon are heterogeneous.
In the last few years, researchers have applied machine learning strategies in the context of vehicular platoons to increase the safety and efficiency of cooperative transportation. Reinforcement Learning methods have been employed in the longitudinal spacing control of Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control systems, but to date, none of those studies have addressed problems of disturbance rejection in such scenarios. Characteristics such as uncertain parameters in the model and external interferences may prevent agents from reaching null-spacing errors when traveling at cruising speed. On the ot…

Cooperative driving, enabled by Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication, is expected to significantly contribute to the transportation system's safety and efficiency. Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC), a major cooperative driving application, has been the subject of many studies in recent years. The primary motivation behind using CACC is to reduce traffic congestion and improve traffic flow, traffic throughput, and highway capacity. Since the information flow between cooperative vehicles can significantly affect the dynamics of a platoon, the design and performance of control compo…
Platoons of autonomous vehicles are being investigated as a way to increase road capacity and fuel efficiency. Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) is one approach to controlling platoons longitudinal dynamics, which requires wireless communication between vehicles. In the present paper we use a sliding mode observer to detect and estimate cyber-attacks threatening such wireless communication. In particular we prove stability of the observer and robustness of the detection threshold in the case of event-triggered communication, following a realistic Vehicle-to-Vehicle network protocol.

The unknown sharp changes of vehicle acceleration rates, also called the unknown jerk dynamics, may significantly affect the driving performance of the leader vehicle in a platoon, resulting in more drastic car-following movements in platooning tracking control, which could cause safety and traffic capacity concerns. To address these issues, in this paper, we investigate cooperative platooning tracking control and intermittent optimization problems for connected automated vehicles (CAVs) with a nonlinear car-following model. We assume that the external inputs of the leader CAV contain unknown …
Recent advances in vehicle connectivity have allowed formation of autonomous vehicle platoons for improved mobility and traffic throughput. In order to avoid a pile-up in such platoons, it is important to ensure platoon (string) stability, which is the focus of this work. As per conventional definition of string stability, the power (2-norm) of the spacing error signals should not amplify downstream in a platoon. But in practice, it is the infinity-norm of the spacing error signal that dictates whether a collision occurs. We address this discrepancy in the first part of our work, where we reco…
The paper deals with the design of nonlinear adaptive cruise controllers for vehicular platoons operating on an open road or a ring-road. The constructed feedback controllers are nonlinear functions of the distance between successive vehicles and their speeds. It is shown that the proposed novel controllers guarantee safety (collision avoidance) and bounded vehicle speeds by explicitly characterizing the set of allowable inputs. Moreover, we guarantee global asymptotic stability of the platoon to a desired configuration as well as string stability. Certain macroscopic properties are also inves…
Networked robotic systems, such as connected vehicle platoons, can improve the safety and efficiency of transportation networks by allowing for high-speed coordination. To enable such coordination, these systems rely on networked communications. This can make them susceptible to cyber attacks. Though security methods such as encryption or specially designed network topologies can increase the difficulty of successfully executing such an attack, these techniques are unable to guarantee secure communication against an attacker. More troublingly, these security methods are unable to ensure that i…
We study platoon control of vehicles with linear third-order longitudinal dynamics under the constant time headway policy. The controller of each follower vehicle is only based on its own velocity, acceleration, inter-vehicle distance and velocity difference with respect to its immediate predecessor, which are all obtained by on-board sensors. We develop distributed cooperative extended state observers for followers to estimate the acceleration differences between adjacent vehicles. Based on estimates of the acceleration differences, distributed cooperative control laws are designed. By using …
In part II, we present a fully distributed nonlinear variable time headway space strategy to ensure the subsequent safe cruising and junction crossing, where the cooperative perception of multiple neighbors stimuli and the cooperative tracking of the follower connected automated vehicles(CAVs) to the leader CAV are developed, which will result in a heterogeneous traffic flow dynamic. Once the proper length of the platoon determined by the ADSCAS characterized in part I is formed, we propose a cooperative observer design to estimate the leader CAV's acceleration adjustment which is affected by …
Connected automated vehicles (CAVs) have brought new opportunities to improve traffic throughput and reduce energy consumption. However, the uncertain lane-change behaviors (LCBs) of surrounding vehicles (SVs) as an uncontrollable factor significantly threaten the driving safety and the consistent movement of a group of platoon CAVs. How to ensure safe, efficient, and fuel economic platoon control poses a key challenge faced by researchers in complex traffic environments. This study proposes a dynamic platoon management and cooperative driving framework for a mixed traffic flow consisting of m…
This paper applies a classical physics-based model to control platooning AVs in a commercial traffic simulation software. In Spring-Mass-Damper model, each vehicle is assumed as a mass coupled with its preceding vehicle with a spring and a damper: the spring constant and damper coefficient control spacing and speed adoption between vehicles. Limitations on platooning-oriented communication range and number of vehicles in each platoon are applied to the model to reflect real-world circumstances and avoid overlengthened platoons. The SMD model control both intra-platoon and inter-platoon interac…
A fundamental problem in traffic networks is driving under safety and limited physical space constraints. In this paper, we design longitudinal vehicle controllers and study the dynamics of a system of homogeneous vehicles on a single-lane ring road in order to understand the interplay of limited space, speed, and safety. Each vehicle in the system either operates in the cruise control mode or follows a vehicle ahead by keeping a safe time headway. We show that if the number of vehicles is less than a certain critical threshold, vehicles can occupy the limited space in many different configura…

The upgrading and updating of vehicles have accelerated in the past decades. Out of the need for environmental friendliness and intelligence, electric vehicles (EVs) and connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) have become new components of transportation systems. This paper develops a reinforcement learning framework to implement adaptive control for an electric platoon composed of CAVs and human-driven vehicles (HDVs) at a signalized intersection. Firstly, a Markov Decision Process (MDP) model is proposed to describe the decision process of the mixed platoon. Novel state representation and re…
