Future e-mobility calls for efficient electrical machines. For different areas of operation, these machines have to satisfy certain desired properties that often depend on their design. Here we investigate the use of multipatch Isogeometric Analysis (IgA) for the simulation and shape optimization of the electrical machines. In order to get fast simulation and optimization results, we use non-overlapping domain decomposition (DD) methods to solve the large systems of algebraic equations arising from the IgA discretization of underlying partial differential equations. The DD is naturally related to the multipatch representation of the computational domain, and provides the framework for the parallelization of the DD solvers.
The development of materials with specific structural properties is of huge practical interest, for example, for medical applications or for the development of light weight structures in aeronautics. In this article, we combine shape optimization and homogenization for the optimal design of the microstructure in scaffolds. Given the current microstructure, we apply the isogeometric boundary element method to compute the effective tensor and to update the microstructure by using the shape gradient in order to match the desired effective tensor. Extensive numerical studies are presented to demon…
We are interested in a fast solver for the Stokes equations, discretized with multi-patch Isogeometric Analysis. In the last years, several inf-sup stable discretizations for the Stokes problem have been proposed, often the analysis was restricted to single-patch domains. We focus on one of the simplest approaches, the isogeometric Taylor--Hood element. We show how stability results for single-patch domains can be carried over to multi-patch domains. While this is possible, the stability strongly depends on the shape of the geometry. We construct a Dual-Primal Isogeometric Tearing and Intercon…
This paper presents a shape optimisation system to design the shape of an acoustically-hard object in the three-dimensional open space. Boundary element method (BEM) is suitable to analyse such an exterior field. However, the conventional BEM, which is based on piecewise polynomial shape and interpolation functions, can require many design variables because they are usually chosen as a part of the nodes of the underlying boundary element mesh. In addition, it is not easy for the conventional method to compute the gradient of the sound pressure on the surface, which is necessary to compute the …
The eigenmodes of resonating structures, e.g., electromagnetic cavities, are sensitive to deformations of their shape. In order to compute the sensitivities of the eigenpair with respect to a scalar parameter, we state the Laplacian and Maxwellian eigenvalue problems and discretize the models using isogeometric analysis. Since we require the derivatives of the system matrices, we differentiate the system matrices for each setting considering the appropriate function spaces for geometry and solution. This approach allows for a straightforward computation of arbitrary higher order sensitivities …
The isogeometric boundary element algorithm for solving the plane strain problem of an elastic matrix containing an open material surface of arbitrary shape
To exploit the advantageous properties of isogeometric analysis (IGA) in a scan-based setting, it is important to extract a smooth geometric domain from the scan data (e.g., voxel data). IGA-suitable domains can be constructed by convoluting the grayscale data using B-splines. A negative side-effect of this convolution technique is, however, that it can induce topological changes in the process of smoothing when features with a size similar to that of the voxels are encountered. This manuscript presents an enhanced B-spline-based segmentation procedure using a refinement strategy based on trun…

This paper proposes a shape optimization algorithm based on the principles of Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) in which the parameterization of the geometry enters the problem formulation as an additional PDE-constraint. Inspired by the isoparametric principle of IGA, the parameterization and the governing state equation are treated using the same numerical technique. This leads to a scheme that is comparatively easy to differentiate, allowing for a fully symbolic derivation of the gradient and subsequent gradient-based optimization. To improve the efficiency and robustness of the scheme, the basis…
