I report the discovery of a new bright variable star in the constellation Scorpius. It is most likely star OGLE BUL-SC23 396060 with position (J2000.0): RA 17:57:59.75, DEC -31:38:07.4. Magnitude range is 14.4 (B) - 21.7 (V). It is visible in the possible outburst on two digitized Palomar Sky Survey photographic plates, which were made 60 years ago. This object was registered as a variable star in the AAVSO VSX under the name of Romanov V1 and with UG: variability type.
Photographic plate archives contain a wealth of information about positions and brightness celestial objects had decades ago. Plate digitization is necessary to make this information accessible, but extracting it is a technical challenge. We develop algorithms used to extract photometry with the accuracy of better than ~0.1m in the magnitude range 13<B<17 from photographic images obtained in 1948-1996 with the 40cm Sternberg institute's astrograph (30x30cm plate size, 10x10deg field of view) and digitized using a flatbed scanner. The extracted photographic lightcurves are used to identify thou…
We present a statistical analysis of the accuracy of the digitized magnitudes of photometric plates on the time scale of decades. In our examination of archival Johnson B photometry from the Harvard DASCH archive, we find a median RMS scatter of lightcurves of order 0.15mag over the range B~9-17 for all calibrations. Slight underlying systematics (trends or flux discontinuities) are on a level of ~<=0.2mag per century (1889-1990) for the majority of constant stars. These historic data can be unambiguously used for processes that happen on scales of magnitudes, and need to be carefully examined…
We present solar full-disk observations, which were recorded at the Einstein Tower during the years 1943 - 1991 (Solar Cycles 18 - 22). High-school students from Potsdam and Berlin digitized more than 3500 full-disk images during two- to three-week internships at AIP. The digital images cover a 15 cm $\times$ 15 cm region on photographic plates, which were scanned at a resolution of 7086 $\times$ 7086 pixels. The raw data are monochromatic 8-bit images in the Tagged Image File Format (TIFF). These images were calibrated and saved with improved photometric precision as 16-bit images with 2048 $…
We identify 339 known and 316 new variable stars of various types among 250000 lightcurves obtained by digitizing 167 30x30cm photographic plates of the Moscow collection. We use these data to conduct a comprehensive test of 18 statistical characteristics (variability indices) in search for the best general-purpose variability detection statistic. We find that the highest peak on the DFT periodogram, interquartile range, median absolute deviation, and Stetson's L index are the most efficient in recovering variable objects from the set of photographic lightcurves used in our test.
We report on the fast Nova Sgr 2016 N.4 being surprisingly trapped in a long-lasting and bright plateau (Delta I >= 10 mag above quiescence) six years past the nova eruption. Very few other novae experience a similar occurrence. We carried out an intensive observing campaign collecting daily BVRI photometry and monthly high-resolution optical spectroscopy, and observed the nova in ultraviolet and X-rays with Swift satellite at five distinct epochs. The bolometric luminosity radiated during the plateau is ~4200 Lsun (scaled to the distance of the Galactic Bulge), corresponding to stable nuclear…
We present the analysis of existing optical photometry and new optical spectroscopy of the candidate cataclysmic variable star OGLE-BLG504.12.201843. As was shown previously, this object has an orbital period of 0.523419 days and exhibits year-long outbursts with a mean period of 973 days. Using digitized photographic archives, we show that the earliest recorded outburst occurred in 1910. We propose that this object is a U Gem-type dwarf nova with extreme properties. The orbital variability of the system in outburst shows clear signs of an accretion disc, from which the outburst likely origina…

We report on our photometric observations of the 2016 superoutburst of ASASSN-16eg. This object showed a WZ Sge-type superoutburst with prominent early superhumps with a period of 0.075478(8) d and a post-superoutburst rebrightening. During the superoutburst plateau, it showed ordinary superhumps with a period of 0.077880(3) d and a period derivative of 10.6(1.1) $\times$ 10$^{-5}$ in stage B. The orbital period ($P_{\rm orb}$), which is almost identical with the period of early superhumps, is exceptionally long for a WZ Sge-type dwarf nova. The mass ratio ($q$ = $M_2/M_1$) estimated from the …
ASASSN-14dx showed an extraordinary outburst whose features are the small outburst amplitude (~ 2.3 mag) and long duration (> 4 years). Because we found a long observational gap of 123 d before the outburst detection, we propose that the main outburst plateau was missed and that this outburst is just a "fading tail" often seen after the WZ Sge-type superoutbursts. In order to distinguish between WZ Sge and SU UMa-type dwarf novae (DNe), we investigated Gaia DR2 statistically. We applied a logistic regression model and succeeded in classifying by using absolute Gaia magnitudes $M_{G}$ and Gaia …

We present the results of our monitoring campaigns of the luminous red novae (LRNe) AT 2020hat in NGC 5068 and AT 2020kog in NGC 6106. The two objects were imaged (and detected) before their discovery by routine survey operations. They show a general trend of slow luminosity rise, lasting at least a few months. The subsequent major LRN outbursts were extensively followed in photometry and spectroscopy. The light curves present an initial short-duration peak, followed by a redder plateau phase. AT 2020kog is a moderately luminous event peaking at ~7 x 10^40 erg/s, while AT 2020hat is almost one…
We report K2 observations of the eclipsing cataclysmic variable V729 Sgr which covered nearly 80 days in duration. We find five short outbursts and two long outbursts, one of which shows a clear plateau phase in the rise to maximum brightness. The mean time between successive short outbursts is ~10 d while the time between the two long outbursts is ~38 d. The frequency of these outbursts are unprecedented for a CV above the orbital period gap. We find evidence that the mid-point of the eclipse occurs systematically earlier in outburst than in quiescence. During five of the six quiescent epochs…
We present 8--12\,GHz radio light curves of five dwarf nova (DN) type Cataclysmic Variable stars (CVs) in outburst (RX And, U Gem and Z Cam), or superoutburst (SU UMa and YZ Cnc), increasing the number of radio-detected DN by a factor of two. The observed radio emission was variable on time-scales of minutes to days, and we argue that it is likely to be synchrotron emission. This sample shows no correlation between the radio luminosity and optical luminosity, orbital period, CV class, or outburst type; however higher-cadence observations are necessary to test this, as the measured luminosity i…
On 2018, April 29, a bright classical nova (CN) Per 2018 was discovered. Its progenitor is a well-known dwarf nova V392 Per. In this contribution, we analyze $UBVR_{C}I_{C}$ photometry and optical spectroscopy of the CN V392 Per. From the $V$ light curve (LC) we found the brightness decline times t$_{2,V}$ = 3 d, t$_{3,V}$ = 10 d and calculated absolute magnitude of the nova at maximum $MV_{max}$ = -9.30 ${\pm}$0.57 using the new $MV_{max}$ - t$_{3}$ "universal" decline law and $MV_{15}$ relations, adopting the Gaia data for CNe. We determined the colour excess $E_{B-V}$ = 0.90$\pm$0.09 and di…
The cosmological {7Li problem consists in explaining why the primordial Li abundance, as predicted by the standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis theory with constraints from WMAP and Planck, is a factor of 3 larger than the Li abundance measured in the stars of the Spite plateau defined by old, warm dwarf stars of the Milky Way halo. Several explanations have been proposed to explain this difference, including various Li depletion processes as well as non standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis, but the main question remains unanswered. In this paper, we present detailed chemical evolution models for dwa…
Infra-Red(IR) astronomical databases, namely, IRAS, 2MASS, WISE, and Spitzer, are used to analyze photometric data of 126 carbon stars whose spectra are visible in the First Byurakan Survey low-resolution spectral plates. Among these, six new objects, recently confirmed on the digitized FBS plates, are included. For three of them, moderate-resolution CCD optical spectra are also presented. In this work several IR color-color diagrams are studied. Early and late-type C stars are separated in the JHK Near-Infra-Red(NIR) color-color plots, as well as in the WISE W3-W4 versus W1-W2 diagram. Late N…
We report extensive 3-yr multiwavelength observations of the WZ Sge-type dwarf nova SSS J122221.7-311525 during its unusual double superoutburst, the following decline and in quiescence. The second segment of the superoutburst had a long duration of 33 d and a very gentle decline with a rate of 0.02 mag/d, and it displayed an extended post-outburst decline lasting at least 500 d. Simultaneously with the start of the rapid fading from the superoutburst plateau, the system showed the appearance of a strong near-infrared excess resulting in very red colours, which reached extreme values (B-I~1.4)…
Using 172 plates taken with the 40-cm astrograph of the Sternberg Astronomical Institute (Lomonosov Moscow University) in 1976-1994 and digitized with the resolution of 2400 dpi, we discovered and studied 275 new variable stars. We present the list of our new variables with all necessary information concerning their brightness variations. As in our earlier studies, the new discoveries show a rather large number of high-amplitude Delta Scuti variables, predicting that many stars of this type remain not detected in the whole sky. We also performed automated classification of the newly discovered…
