We conduct a multi-wavelength morphological study of the Galactic supernova remnant RXJ0852.0-4622 (also known as Vela Jr., Vela Z and G266.2-1.2). RX J0852.0-4622 is coincident with the edge of the larger Vela supernova remnant causing confusion in the attribution of some filamentary structures to either RX J0852.0-4622 or its larger sibling. We find that the RX J0852.0-4622 radio continuum emission can be characterised by a 2-dimensional shell with a radius of 0.90+/-0.01deg (or 11.8+/-0.6pc at an assumed distance of 750pc) centred at (l,b)=(133.08+/-0.01 deg,-46.34+/-0.01deg) (or RA=8h52m19.2s, Dec=-46deg20'24.0'', J2000), consistent with X-ray and gamma-ray emission. Although [OIII] emission features are generally associated with the Vela SNR, one particular [OIII] emission feature, which we denote as "the Vela Claw", morphologically matches a molecular clump that is thought to have been stripped by the stellar progenitor of the RX J0852.0-4622 SNR. We argue that the Vela Claw feature is possibly associated with RX J0852.0-4622. Towards the north-western edge of RX J0852.0-4622, we find a flattening of the radio spectral index towards another molecular clump also thought to be associated with RX J0852.0-4622. It is currently unclear whether this feature and the Vela Claw result from interactions between the RX J0852.0-4622 shock and the ISM.
Vela Jr. (RX J0852.0$-$4622) is one of just a few known supernova remnants (SNRs) with a resolved shell across the whole electromagnetic spectrum from radio to very-high-energy ($>100$ GeV; VHE) gamma-rays. Its proximity and large size allow for detailed spatially resolved observations of the source making Vela Jr. one of the primary sources used for the study of particle acceleration and emission mechanisms in SNRs. High-resolution X-ray observations reveal a steepening of the spectrum toward the interior of the remnant. In this study we aim for a self-consistent radiation model of Vela Jr. w…
The Vela and Puppis A supernova remnants (SNRs) comprise a large emission region of $\sim 8^{\circ}$ diameter in the soft X-ray sky. The HaloSat CubeSat mission provides the first soft X-ray ($0.4-7$ keV) observation of the entire Vela SNR and Puppis A SNR region with a single pointing and moderate spectral resolution. HaloSat observations of the Vela SNR are best fit with a two-temperature thermal plasma model consisting of a cooler component with $kT_{1} = 0.19^{+0.01}_{-0.01}$ keV in collisional ionization equilibrium and a hotter component with $kT_{2} = 1.06^{+0.45}_{-0.27}$ keV in non-eq…
The Vela-X Pulsar Wind Nebula revisited with 4 years of Fermi-Large Area Telescope observations
Hydrodynamic simulations of the interaction of supernova shock waves with a clumpy environment: the case of the RX J0852.0-4622 (Vela Jr) supernova remnant
We perform a sub-threshold follow-up search for continuous nearly-monochromatic gravitational waves from the central compact objects associated with the supernova remnants Vela Jr., Cassiopeia A, and SNR G347.3$-$0.5. Across the three targets, we investigate the most promising ~ 10,000 combinations of gravitational wave frequency and frequency derivative values, based on the results from an Einstein@Home search of the LIGO O1 observing run data, dedicated to these objects. The selection threshold is set so that a signal could be confirmed using the newly released O2 run LIGO data. In order to …

Deep Einstein@Home search for Continuous Gravitational Waves from the Central Compact Objects in the Supernova Remnants Vela Jr. and G347.3-0.5 using LIGO public data
Pulsar wind nebulae are formed when outflows of relativistic electrons and positrons hit the surrounding supernova remnant or interstellar medium at a shock front. The Vela pulsar wind nebula is powered by a young pulsar (B0833-45, age 11 kyr) and located inside an extended structure called Vela X, itself inside the supernova remnant. Previous X-ray observations revealed two prominent arcs, bisected by a jet and counter jet. Radio maps have shown high linear polarization of 60 per cent in the outer regions of the nebula. Here we report X-ray observation of the inner part of the nebula, where p…
Supernova remnants (SNRs) are the outcome of supernovae (SNe, either core-collapse or thermonuclear). The remnant results from the interaction between the stellar ejecta and the ambient medium around the progenitor star. Young SNRs are characterized by strong shocks that heat and ionize the gas, generate magneto-hydrodynamic turbulence, and accelerate particles to relativistic energies. They radiate at all wavelengths, especially in the X-ray domain, where spectro-imaging observations can provide a wealth of information. This paper presents recent progress in the modelling of SNRs, particularl…
Vela X is the prototypical example of a pulsar wind nebula whose morphology and detailed structure have been affected by the interaction with the reverse shock of its host supernova remnant. The resulting complex of filamentary structure and mixed-in ejecta embedded in a nebula that is offset from the pulsar provides the best example we have of this middle-age state that characterizes a significant fraction of composite SNRs, and perhaps all of the large-diameter PWNe seen as TeV sources. Here we report on an XMM-Newton Large Project study of Vela X, supplemented by additional Chandra observat…
We investigate the nature of the accelerated particles responsible for the production of the gamma-ray emission observed from the middle-aged supernova remnant (SNR) HB 21. The analysis of more than nine years of Fermi LAT data leads to the observation of an extended emission positionally in agreement with the SNR HB 21. The bulk of this gamma-ray emission is detected from the remnant; photons up to $\sim$10\,GeV show clear evidence of curvature at the lower energies. The remnant is characterized by an extension of $0^{\circ}.83$, that is, 30\% smaller than claimed in previous studies. The inc…
Supernova remnant (SNR) shocks provide favourable sites of cosmic ray (CR) proton acceleration if the local magnetic field direction is quasi-parallel to the shock normal. Using the moving-mesh magneto-hydrodynamical (MHD) code AREPO we present a suite of SNR simulations with CR acceleration in the Sedov-Taylor phase that combine different magnetic field topologies, density distributions with gradients and large-scale fluctuations, and -- for our core-collapse SNRs -- a multi-phase interstellar medium with dense clumps with a contrast of $10^4$. Assuming the hadronic gamma-ray emission model f…
Supernova remnants (SNRs) are observable for about 6-15x10^4 years before they fade into the Galactic interstellar medium. With a Galactic supernova rate of approximately two per century, we can expect to have of the order of 1200 SNRs in our Galaxy. However, only about 300 of them are known to date, with the majority having been discovered in Galactic plane radio surveys. Given that these SNRs represent the brightest tail of the distribution and are mostly located close to the plane, they are not representative of the complete sample. Here we report findings from the search for new SNRs in th…
The X-ray source CXO\, J085201.4$-$461753in the few kyr-old Vela Jr. supernova remnant (G266.2-1.2) belongs to the peculiar class of isolated neutron stars dubbed "Central Compact Objects" (CCOs). At variance with the other CCOs, which are only detected in the X-rays, \cxo\ has been possibly detected also at other wavelengths. In particular, a candidate near-infrared counterpart (H = 21.6 $\pm$0.1) was detected by the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in addition to a 6\arcsec-wide nebula detected in H$α$, interpreted as a velocity-driven bow-shock. Here, we present new near-infrared and optical VLT …
Galactic cosmic rays (CRs) are believed to be accelerated at supernova remnant (SNR) shocks. In the hadronic scenario the TeV gamma-ray emission from SNRs originates from decaying pions that are produced in collisions of the interstellar gas and CRs. Using CR-magnetohydrodynamic simulations, we show that magnetic obliquity-dependent shock acceleration is able to reproduce the observed TeV gamma-ray morphology of SNRs such as Vela Jr. and SN1006 solely by varying the magnetic morphology. This implies that gamma-ray bright regions result from quasi-parallel shocks (i.e., when the shock propagate…
Supernova remnants are known to accelerate cosmic rays on account of their non-thermal emission of radio waves, X-rays, and gamma rays. Although there are many models for the acceleration of cosmic rays in Supernova remnants, the escape of cosmic rays from these sources is yet understudied. We use our time-dependent acceleration code RATPaC to study the acceleration of cosmic rays and their escape in post-adiabatic Supernova remnants and calculate the subsequent gamma-ray emission from inverse-Compton scattering and Pion decay. We performed spherically symmetric 1-D simulations in which we sim…
We review the major advances in understanding the morphologies and kinematics of supernova remnants (SNRs). Simulations of SN explosions have improved dramatically over the last few years, and SNRs can be used to test models through comparison of predictions with SNRs' observed large-scale compositional and morphological properties as well as the three-dimensional kinematics of ejecta material. In particular, Cassiopeia A -- the youngest known core-collapse SNR in the Milky Way -- offers an up-close view of the complexity of these explosive events that cannot be resolved in distant, extragalac…
The astrometric/morphological variability and the birth place of LS 5039
The data on the inclusive flux of cosmic positrons and electrons ($e^++e^{-}$) have been recently collected from GeV to tens of TeV energies by several experiments with unprecedented precision. In addition, the Fermi-LAT Collaboration has provided a new energy spectrum for the upper bounds on the $e^++e^{-}$ dipole anisotropy. This observable can bring information on the emission from local Galactic sources, notably measured with high precision at radio frequencies. We develop a framework in which $e^-$ and $e^+$ measured at Earth from GeV up to tens of TeV energies have a composite origin. A …
Supernova remnants (SNRs) are known to accelerate particles to relativistic energies, on account of their nonthermal emission. The observational progress from radio to gamma-ray observations reveals more and more morphological features that need to be accounted for when modeling the emission from those objects. We use our time-dependent acceleration code RATPaC to study the formation of extended gamma-ray halos around supernova remnants and the morphological implications that arise when the high-energetic particles start to escape from the SNRs. We performed spherically symmetric 1D simulation…
We find that the remnant of supernova (SN) 1987A share some morphological features with four supernova remnants (SNRs) that have signatures of shaping by jets, and from that we strengthen the claim that jets played a crucial role in the explosion of SN 1987A. Some of the morphological features appear also in planetary nebulae where jets are observed. The clumpy ejecta bring us to support the claim that the jittering jets explosion mechanism can account for the structure of the remnant of SN 1987A, i.e., SNR 1987A. We conduct a preliminary attempt to quantify the fluctuations in the angular mom…
