The Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld (EiBI) gravity is a modification of the theory of general relativity inspired by the nonlinear Born-Infeld electrodynamics. The theory is described by a series of higher curvature terms added to the Einstein-Hilbert action with the parameter $κ$. The EiBI gravity has several interesting exact neutral and charged black hole solutions. We study the problem of overcharging extremal black hole solutions of EiBI gravity using a charged test particle to create naked singularity. We show that unlike general relativity, the overcharging could be possible for a charged extremal black hole in EiBI gravity as long as the matter sector is described by usual Maxwell's electrodynamics. Once the matter sector is also modified in accordance to the Born-Infeld prescription with the parameter $b$, the overcharging is not possible as long as the parameters obey the condition $4 κb^2 \leq 1$.
We show that, contrary to a widespread belief, one can overcharge a near extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole by throwing in a charged particle, as long as the backreaction effects may be considered negligible. Furthermore, we find that we can make the particle's classical radius, mass, and charge, as well as the relative size of the backreaction terms arbitrarily small, by adjusting the parameters corresponding to the particle appropriately. This suggests that the question of cosmic censorship is still not wholly resolved even in this simple scenario. We contrast this with attempting to ove…
There is a claim that a static charged black hole (Reissner-Nordström black hole) can be overcharged by absorbing a charged test particle. If it is true, it might give a counter example to the weak cosmic censorship conjecture, which states that spacetime singularities are never observed by a distant observer. However, so far the proposed process has only been analyzed within a test particle approximation. Here we claim that the back reaction effects of a charged particle cannot be neglected when judging whether the suggested process is really a counter example to the cosmic censorship conject…
We study the generalization of the gadenken experiment of overcharging an extremal black hole proposed by Wald in the context of a multi black hole solution. In particular, we attempt to overcharge a system of two extremal black holes via test particle absorption to produce a system involving a black hole and a naked singularity. If such a process is possible, then this would be a potential violation of the cosmic censorship hypothesis. However, we find that, analogous to Wald's result for a single charged black hole, such a test particle which can expose the singularity, would not be able to …
It is well known that the electrically charged Reissner-Nordström black hole could be overcharged. Here, we investigate the process of overcharging of a magnetized Reissner-Nordström black hole that includes effect of the magnetic field generated by own magnetic charge of source on the background geometry. It is found that magnetic field prevents a transition to occur from black hole to naked singularity, thus overcharging cannot be attained which happens due to the fact that the magnetic field reaches its threshold value. It turns out that beyond threshold value the magnetic field can exert l…
We examine the problem of overcharging extremal and near-extremal black hole solutions of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in any dimension, generalizing the result in general relativity. We show that as in the case of general relativity, it is not possible to create a naked singularity by overcharging an extremal black hole in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity using a charged test particle. Our result suggests that the validity of the cosmic censorship hypothesis transcends beyond general relativity to well motivated higher curvature gravity.
Evidences have been found that the weak cosmic censorship conjecture could be violated if test particles with charge and angular momentum are injected into a black hole. However, second-order corrections and fine-tunings on the particle's parameters are required in previous studies, indicating that self-force and radiative effects must be taken into account. In this paper, we first consider a magnetically charged particle falling into an extremal Bardeen black hole, which is regular (with no singularity) and has a magnetic monopole at the center. We then investigate a general class of magnetic…
The Weak Cosmic Censorship (WCC) conjecture can be used as a consistency criterion for any viable modification over general relativity (GR). We employ this idea to show that in contrast to the black holes in GR, it is indeed possible to overcharge modified extremal black hole solutions. Demanding the validity of WCC, we put some stringent constraints on various parameters of the theory. In particular, for charged Einstein-aether black hole, our method is strong enough to reproduce the identical bound on the parameter obtained previously from entirely different considerations.
It has been shown that the Strong Cosmic Censorship (SCC) can be violated by a scalar field in a near-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black hole. In this paper, we investigate the Strong Cosmic Censorship in a Born-Infeld-de Sitter black hole by a scalar perturbation field with/without a charge. When the Born-Infeld parameter b becomes small, the nonlinear electrodynamics effect starts to play an important role and tends to rescue SCC. Specifically, we find that the SCC violation region decreases in size with decreasing b. Moreover, for a sufficiently small b, SCC can always be restored …
We examine the laws of thermodynamics and the weak cosmic censorship conjecture in the normal and extended phase space of Born-Infeld-anti-de Sitter black hole by considering a charged particle absorption. In the normal phase space, the first and second law of thermodynamics as well as the weak cosmic censorship are still valid. However, in the extended phase space, the second law of thermodynamics is violated for double-horizon black holes and part of single-horizon black holes. The first law of thermodynamics and the weak cosmic censorship conjecture are still valid for all black holes. In a…
Recently, Sorce and Wald have suggested a new version of the gedanken experiments to overspin or overcharge the Kerr-Newman black holes in Einstein-Maxwell gravity. Following their setup, in this paper, we investigate the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) in the static Einstein-Born-Infeld black holes for the Einstein gravity coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics. First of all, we derive the first two order perturbation inequalities of the charged collision matter in the Einstein-Born-Infeld gravity based on the Iyer-Wald formalism as well as the null energy conditions of the matter fiel…
We test whether static charged dilaton black holes in 2+1 dimensions can be turned into naked singularities, by sending in test particles from infinity. We derive that overcharging is possible and generic for both extremal and nearly extremal black holes. Our analysis also imply that nearly extremal charged dilaton black holes can be continuously driven to extremality and beyond, unlike nearly extremal Baunados-Teitelboim-Zanelli, Kerr and Reissner-Nordström black holes which are overspun or overcharged by a discrete jump. Thus the weak form of the cosmic censorship conjecture and the third la…
It has been shown that the quasinormal modes of perturebated fields can be used to investigate the validity of strong cosmic censorship (SCC). Relevant issues for Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter (RNdS) black holes and Born-Infeld-de Sitter (BI-dS) black holes have been discussed. In this paper, we investigate SCC in an asymptotic RN-dS black hole with logarithmic nonlinear electromagnetic field perturbed by massless scalar fields. It has been argued that SCC can be violated in a near-extremal RN-dS black hole. However, we find that the NLED effect can rescue SCC for a near-extremal logarithmic-de…
The new version of the gedanken experiments proposed by Sorce and Wald are designed to test the validity of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) by overspinning or overcharging the Kerr-Newman black hole in Einstein-Maxwell gravity. Following their setup, in this paper, we investigate the WCCC in the higher-dimensional charged black hole with a nonlinear electrodynamics source. We derive the first and seconder order perturbation inequalities of the charged collision matter based on the Iyer-Wald formalism as well as the null energy conditions, and show that they share the similar form …
A thought experiment considered recently in the literature, in which it is investigated whether a dyonic Kerr-Newman black hole can be destroyed by overcharging or overspinning it past extremality by a massive complex scalar test field, is revisited. Another derivation of the result that this is not possible, i.e. the weak cosmic censorship is not violated in this thought experiment, is given. The derivation is based on conservation laws, on a null energy condition, and on specific properties of the metric and the electromagnetic field of dyonic Kerr-Newman black holes. The metric is kept fixe…
The weak cosmic censorship conjecture asserts that spacetime singularities that arise in gravitational collapse are always hidden inside of black holes, invisible to distant observers. This conjecture, put forward by Penrose more than four decades ago, is widely believed to be one of the basic principles of nature. However, a complete proof of this hypothesis is still lacking and the validity of the conjecture has therefore remained one of the most important open questions in general relativity. In this study we analyze a gedanken experiment which is designed to challenge cosmic censorship by …
Motivated by the recent attempts to violate the weak cosmic censorship conjecture for near-extreme black-holes, we consider the possibility of overcharging a near-extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole by the quantum tunneling of charged particles. We consider the scattering of spin-0 and spin-1/2 particles by the black hole in a unified framework and obtain analytically, for the first time, the pertinent reflection and transmission coefficients without any small charge approximation. Based on these results, we propose some gedanken experiments that could lead to the violation of the weak cosmi…
In this paper, we test the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) for the Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter (RN-dS) black hole surrounded by perfect fluid dark matter. We consider a spherically symmetric perturbation on deriving linear and non-linear order perturbation inequalities by applying new version of gedanken experiments well accepted from the work of Sorce and Wald. Contrary to the well-known result that the Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole could be overcharged under linear order particle accretion it is hereby shown that the same black hole in perfect fluid dark matter with cosmologic…
By using the scattering of a scalar field, we discuss the thermodynamics and overcharging problem in a 4D Gauss-Bonnet AdS black hole in both the normal phase space and extended phase space. In the normal phase space, where the cosmological constant and Gauss-Bonnet parameter are fixed, the first law and the second law of thermodynamics are valid. In addiction, the black hole cannot be overcharged and the weak cosmic censorship conjecture is valid. In the extended phase space, where the cosmological constant and Gauss-Bonnet parameter are treated as the thermodynamic variables, the first law i…
We study here the gravitational collapse of dust in $(2+1)$-dimensional spacetimes for the formation of black holes (BH) and naked singularities (NS) as final states in a modified theory of gravity, with vanishing cosmological constant. From the perspective of cosmic censorship, we investigate the collapse of a dust cloud in Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity (EiBI) and compare the results with those of general relativity (GR). It turns out that, as opposed to the general relativistic situation, where the outcome of dust collapse in $(2+1)$ dimensions is always a naked singularity, the EiB…
Transforming Penrose's intuitive picture of a strong cosmic censorship principle, that generically forbids the appearance of locally naked space-time singularities, into a formal mathematical proof, remains at present, one of the most outstanding unsolved mathematical problems from the theory of gravitational collapse. Part of the difficulty lies in the fact that we do not possess yet a clear-cut understanding of the hypothesis needed for the establishment of some sort of strong cosmic censorship theorem. What we have is a selected list of solutions, which at first sight seem to go against cos…
Recently, several authors have studied the possibility of overspinning or overcharging an existing black hole to destroy its event horizon and make the central singularity naked. When all the effects are properly taken into account, any attempt to destroy the black hole seems to be doomed to fail, in agreement with the weak cosmic censorship conjecture. In this letter, we study the possibility of destroying the event horizon of regular black holes. These objects have no central singularity and therefore they are not protected by the cosmic censorship hypothesis. Our results strongly support th…
