A strong X-ray outburst was detected in HE1136-2304 in 2014. Accompanying optical spectra revealed that the spectral type has changed from a nearly Seyfert 2 type (1.95), classified by spectra taken 10 and 20 years ago, to a Seyfert 1.5 in our most recent observations. We seek to investigate a detailed spectroscopic campaign on the spectroscopic properties and spectral variability behavior of this changing look AGN and compare this to other variable Seyfert galaxies. We carried out a detailed spectroscopic variability campaign of HE1136-2304 with the 10 m Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) between 2014 December and 2015 July. The broad-line region (BLR) of HE1136-2304 is stratified with respect to the distance of the line-emitting regions. The integrated emission line intensities of Halpha, Hbeta, HeI 5876, and HeII 4686 originate at distances of 15.0 (+4.2,-3.8), 7.5 (+4.6,-5.7), 7.3 (+2.8,-4.4), and 3.0 (+5.3,-3.7) light days with respect to the optical continuum at 4570AA. The variability amplitudes of the integrated emission lines are a function of distance to the ionizing continuum source as well. We derived a central black hole mass of 3.8 (+-3.1) 10exp(7) M_solar based on the line widths and distances of the BLR. The outer line wings of all BLR lines respond much faster to continuum variations indicating a Keplerian disk component for the BLR. The response in the outer wings is about two light days shorter than the response of the adjacent continuum flux with respect to the ionizing continuum flux. The vertical BLR structure in HE1136-2304 confirms a general trend that the emission lines of narrow line active galactic nuclei (AGNs) originate at larger distances from the midplane in comparison to AGNs showing broader emission lines. Otherwise, the variability behavior of this changing look AGN is similar to that of other AGN.
Changing-look Active Galactic Nuclei (CLAGN) are AGN that change type as their broad emission lines appear or disappear, which is usually accompanied by strong flux changes inn their blue featureless continuum. We search for Turn-On CLAGN by selecting type-2 AGN from the spectroscopic 6dF Galaxy Survey, whose photometry, as observed over a decade later by the SkyMapper Southern Survey, is consistent with type-1 AGN. Starting from a random sample of 235 known type-2 AGN we select 18 candidates and confirm 13 AGN to have changed into type-1 spectra; observations of an incomplete sample reveal ni…
Changing-look Active Galactic Nuclei (CL-AGNs) are a subset of AGNs in which the broad Balmer emission lines appear or disappear within a few years. We use the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey to identify five CL-AGNs. The 2-D photometric and kinematic maps reveal common features as well as some unusual properties of CL-AGN hosts as compared to the AGN hosts in general. All MaNGA CL-AGNs reside in the star-forming main sequence, similar to MaNGA non-changing-look AGNs (NCL-AGNs). The $80\% \pm 16\%$ of our CL-AGNs do possess pseudo-bulge features, and follow t…
Changing-Look (CL) is a rare phenomenon of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) that exhibit emerging or disappearing broad lines accompanied by continuum variations on astrophysically short timescales ($\lesssim$ 1 yr to a few decades). While previous studies have found Balmer-line (broad H$α$ and/or H$β$) CL AGNs, the broad Mg II line is persistent even in dim states. No unambiguous Mg II CL AGN has been reported to date. We perform a systematic search of Mg II CL AGNs using multi-epoch spectra of a special population of Mg II-emitters (characterized by strong broad Mg II emission with little evide…
We here report a spectroscopic identification of two new changing-look AGNs (CL-AGNs): SDSS\,J104705.16+544405.8 and SDSS\,J120447.91+170256.8 both with a "turn-off" type transition from type 1 to type 1.8/1.9. The identification is arrived by a follow-up spectroscopic observation of the five changing-look AGN (CL-AGN) candidates that are extracted from the sample recently released in Macleod et al. The candidates are extract by the authors from the Sloan Digit Sky Survey Data Release 7 spectroscopically confirmed quasars with large amplitude variability. By compiling a sample of 26 previously…
It is known that some active galactic nuclei (AGNs) transited from type 1 to type 2 or vice versa. There are two explanations for the so-called changing look AGNs: one is the dramatic change of the obscuration along the line-of-sight, the other is the variation of accretion rate. In this paper, we report the detection of large amplitude variations in the mid-infrared luminosity during the transitions in 10 changing look AGNs using WISE and newly released NEOWISE-R data. The mid-infrared light curves of 10 objects echoes the variability in the optical band with a time lag expected for dust repr…
"Changing-look" active galactic nuclei (CL-AGNs) are a newly-discovered class of AGNs that show the appearance (or disappearance) of broad emission lines within a short time scale (months to years) and are often associated with the dramatic change of their continuum emissions. They provide us an unprecedented chance to directly investigate the host galaxy properties with minimal contamination from the luminous central engine during the "turn-off" state, which is difficult for normal luminous AGNs. In this work, for the first time, we systematically characterize the stellar populations and star…
Changing look active-galatic-nuclei (CL AGNs) can yield considerable insight into accretion physics as well as the co-evolution of black holes and their host galaxies. A large sample of these CL AGNs is essential to achieve the latter goal. We propose an effective method to select CL candidates from spectroscopic quasar catalogs using the mid-infrared (MIR) variability information derived from ALL-WISE/NEOWISE data releases. Our primary selection criteria include both a large amplitude flux variation and a transition of MIR color from an AGN to a normal galaxy. A pilot spectroscopic follow-up …
We study how AGN activity changes across environments from galaxy pairs to clusters using $143\, 843$ galaxies with $z<0.2$ from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Using a refined technique, we apply a continuous measure of AGN activity, characteristic of the ionization state of the narrow-line emitting gas. Changes in key emission-line ratios ([NII]$\lambda6548$/H$α$, [OIII]$\lambda5007$/H$β$) between different samples allow us to disentangle different environmental effects while removing contamination. We confirm that galaxy interactions enhance AGN activity. However, conditions in the cen…
Optical changing-look Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are a class of sources that change type within a short timescale of years or decades. This change is characterised by the appearance or disappearance of broad emission lines, often associated with dramatic AGN continuum flux changes that are orders of magnitude larger than those expected from typical AGN variability. In this work we study for the first time the host galaxy of a changing-look AGN, Mrk 590, using high spatial resolution optical and near-infrared observations. We discover that after ~ 10 yr absence, the optical broad emission lin…
The discovery of changing-look active galactic nuclei (CL AGNs), with appearance and disappearance of broad emission lines and/or with strong variation of line-of-sight column density within a few years, challenges the AGN unification model. We explore the physical mechanisms based on the X-ray spectral evolution for a sample of 15 CL AGNs. We find that the X-ray photon index, $Γ$, and Eddington-scaled X-ray luminosity, $L_{\rm 2-10 keV}/L_{\rm Edd}$, follow negative and positive correlations when $L_{\rm 2-10 keV}/L_{\rm Edd}$ is lower and higher than a critical value of $\sim 10^{-3}$. This …
In this Letter, we report further evidence to support a tidal disruption event (TDE) in the known changing-look AGN SDSS J0159, through the unique variabilities of asymmetric broad H$α$: broader but redder in 2010 than in 2000. Accepted the broad H$α$ emission regions tightly related to accreting debris in a central TDE, the well-known relativistic accretion disk origination can be applied to well explain the asymmetric broad H$α$ variabilities in SDSS J0159. Moreover, the model determined broad H$α$ emission regions have the sizes not follow the empirical R-L relation valid in normal broad li…

We model the broadband (optical/UV and X-ray) continuum spectrum of the "changing-look" active galactic nucleus (AGN) Mrk 1018 as it fades from Seyfert 1 to 1.9 in $\sim 8$ years. The brightest spectrum, with Eddington ratio $L/L_{\rm Edd}\sim 0.08$, has a typical type 1 AGN continuum, with a strong "soft X-ray excess" spanning between the UV and soft X-rays. The dimmest spectrum, at $L/L_{\rm Edd} \sim 0.006$, is very different in shape as well as luminosity, with the soft excess dropping by much more than the hard X-rays. The soft X-ray excess produces most of the ionizing photons, so its dr…
Determining the frequency and duration of changing--look (CL) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) phenomena, where the optical broad emission lines appear or disappear, is crucial to understand the evolution of the accretion flow around supermassive black holes. We present a strategy to select new CL candidates starting from a spectroscopic type 2 AGNs sample and searching for current type 1 photometric variability. We use the publicly available Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) alert stream and the Automatic Learning for the Rapid Classification of Events (ALeRCE) light curve classifier to produce a …
Here we present the long-term optical spectral monitoring of a changing-look active galactic nuclei (AGN) NGC 3516 that covers 22 years (from 1996 to 2018). We explore a variability in the broad lines and continuum, finding that the continuum is changing by more than a factor of 2, while the broad lines are varying by more than a factor of 10. The minimum of activity is observed in 2014, when the broad lines almost disappeared. We confirm that NGC 3516 is a changing-look AGN, and the absorption seen in the UV and X-ray may indicate that there is an obscuring region which is responsible for thi…

SDSS J015957.64+003310.5 is an X-ray selected, $z=0.31$ AGN from the Stripe 82X survey that transitioned from a Type 1 quasar to a Type 1.9 AGN between 2000 and 2010. This is the most distant AGN, and first quasar, yet observed to have undergone such a dramatic change. We re-observed the source with the double spectrograph on the Palomar 5m telescope in July 2014 and found that the spectrum is unchanged since 2010. From fitting the optical spectra, we find that the AGN flux dropped by a factor of 6 between 2000 and 2010 while the broad H$α$ emission faded and broadened. Serendipitous X-ray obs…
We study the utility of broad-band colours in the SkyMapper Southern Survey for selecting Seyfert galaxies at low luminosity. We find that the $u-v$ index, built from the ultraviolet $u$ and violet $v$ filters, separates normal galaxies, starburst galaxies and type-1 AGN. This $u-v$ index is not sensitive to age or metallicity in a stellar population but is instead a quenching-and-bursting indicator in galaxies and detects power-law continua in type-1 AGN. Using over 25,000 galaxies at $z<0.1$ from 6dFGS, we find a selection cut based on $u-v$ and central $u$ band brightness that identifies ty…

We investigate the origin of the parsec-scale radio emission from the changing-look active galactic nucleus (AGN) of Mrk 590, and examine whether the radio power has faded concurrently with the dramatic decrease in accretion rates observed between the 1990s and the present. We detect a compact core at 1.6 GHz and 8.4 GHz using new Very Long Baseline Array observations, finding no significant extended, jet-like features down to $\sim$1 pc scales. The flat spectral index ($α_{1.6}^{8.4} = 0.03$) and high brightness temperature ($T_{\rm b} \sim 10^{8}\,\rm K$) indicate self-absorbed synchrotron e…

Context: Variations in the mass accretion rate appear to be responsible for the rapid transitions in spectral type that are observed in increasingly more active galactic nuclei (AGNs). These objects are now labeled "changing-look" AGNs and are key objects for understanding the physics of accretion onto supermassive black holes. Aims: We aim to complement the analysis and interpretation of changing-look AGNs by modeling the polarization variations that can be observed, in particular, polarized-light echoes. Methods: We built a complex and representative model of an AGN and its host galaxy and r…
Active galactic nuclei (AGN) produce the highest intrinsic luminosities in the Universe from within a compact region. The central engine is thought to be powered by accretion onto a supermassive black hole. A fraction of this huge release of energy influences the evolution of the host galaxy, and in particular, star formation. Thus, AGN are key astronomical sources not only because they play an important role in the evolution of the Universe, but also because they constitute a laboratory for extreme physics. However, these objects are under the resolution limit of current telescopes. Polarimet…

The classic classification scheme for Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) was recently challenged by the discovery of the so-called changing-state (changing-look) AGNs (CSAGNs). The physical mechanism behind this phenomenon is still a matter of open debate and the samples are too small and of serendipitous nature to provide robust answers. In order to tackle this problem, we need to design methods that are able to detect AGN right in the act of changing-state. Here we present an anomaly detection (AD) technique designed to identify AGN light curves with anomalous behaviors in massive datasets. The m…
Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are known to show flux variability over all observable timescales and across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Over the past decade, a growing number of sources have been observed to show dramatic flux and spectral changes, both in the X-rays and in the optical/UV. Such events, commonly described as "changing-look AGN", can be divided into two well-defined classes. Changing-obscuration objects show strong variability of the line-of-sight column density, mostly associated with clouds or outflows eclipsing the central engine of the AGN. Changing-state AGN are inst…
In the manuscript, we report evidence on broad \oiii components apparently obscured in Type-2 AGN under the framework of the Unified model, after checking properties of broad \oiii emissions in large samples of Type-1 and Type-2 AGN in SDSS DR12. We can well confirm the statistically lower flux ratios of the broad to the core \oiii components in Type-2 AGN than in Type-1 AGN, which can be naturally explained by stronger obscured broad \oiii components by central dust torus in Type-2 AGN, unless the Unified model for AGN was not appropriate to the narrow emission lines. The results provide furt…
A complete catalogue of broad-line AGNs and double-peaked emission lines from MaNGA integral-field spectroscopy of 10K galaxies: stellar population of AGNs, supermassive black holes, and dual AGNs
We present results of a long-term optical, UV and X-ray study of variability of the nearby changing-look (CL) Seyfert NGC 1566 which was observed with the Swift Observatory from 2007 to 2020. We summarize our previously published spectroscopic and photometric results and present new observations. We reported on the alteration in the spectral type of NGC 1566 in 2018 (REF1). Moreover, we focused on the exceptional postmaximum behavior after 2018 July, when all bands dropped with some fluctuations (REF2). We observed four significant re-brightenings in the post-maximum period. We have found diff…
NGC 5273 is a known optical and X-ray variable AGN. We analyze new and archival IR, optical, UV, and X-ray data in order to characterize its long-term variability from 2000 to 2022. At least one optical changing-look event occurred between 2011 and 2014, when the AGN changed from a Type 1.8/1.9 Seyfert to a Type 1. It then faded considerably at all wavelengths, followed by a dramatic but slow increase in UV/optical brightness between 2021 and 2022. Near-IR (NIR) spectra in 2022 show prominent broad Paschen lines that are absent in an archival spectrum from 2010, making NGC 5273 one of the few …
We present the multi-epoch monitoring with NuSTAR and XMM-Newton of NGC 1358, a nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy whose properties made it a promising candidate X-ray changing look AGN, i.e., a source whose column density could transition from its 2017 Compton-thick (CT-, having line-of-sight Hydrogen column density NH,los>10^24 cm^-2) state to a Compton-thin (NH,los<10^24 cm^-2) one. The multi-epoch X-ray monitoring confirmed the presence of significant NH,los variability over time-scales as short as weeks, and allowed us to confirm the "changing look" nature of NGC 1358, which has most recently been o…
The spectral type of Mrk 1018 changed from Type 1.9 to 1 and returned back to 1.9 over a period of 40 years. We have investigated physical mechanisms responsible for the spectral change in Mrk 1018 by analyzing archival spectral and imaging data. Two kinematically distinct broad-line components, blueshifted and redshifted components, are found from spectral decomposition. The velocity offset curve of the broad-line as a function of time shows a characteristic pattern. An oscillating recoiled supermassive black hole (rSMBH) scenario is proposed to explain the observed velocity offset in broad e…
Mrk 590 is a known changing-look AGN which almost turned off in 2012, and then in 2017 partially re-ignited into a repeat flaring state, unusual for an AGN. Our \emph{Swift} observations since 2013 allow us to characterise the accretion-generated emission and its reprocessing in the central engine of a changing-look AGN. The X-ray and UV variability amplitudes are higher than those typically observed in `steady-state' AGN at similar moderate accretion rates; instead, the variability is similar to that of highly accreting AGN. The unusually strong X-ray to UV correlation suggests that the UV-em…
Here we investigate the kinematics of the part of the broad line region (BLR) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) emitting H$β$ and H$α$ emission lines. We explore the widths and asymmetries of the broad H$β$ and H$α$ emission lines in a sample of high quality (i.e. high signal to noise ratio) spectra of type 1 AGN taken from the Data Release 16 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, in order to explore possible deviation from the gravitationally bound motion. To find only the broad component of H$β$ and H$α$ we use the FANTASY (Fully Automated pythoN Tool for AGN Spectra analYsis) code for the multi-c…
The masses of supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGN) can be derived spectroscopically via virial mass estimators based on selected broad optical/ultraviolet emission lines. These estimates commonly use the line width as a proxy for the gas speed and the monochromatic continuum luminosity as a proxy for the radius of the broad line region. However, if the size of the broad line region scales with bolometric rather than monochromatic AGN luminosity, mass estimates based on different emission lines will show a systematic discrepancy which is a function of the color of the AGN co…
In this lecture note, we make the case for new (spectro)polarimetric measurements of "changing-look" AGNs (CLAGNs), a subclass of the AGN family tree that shows long-term (months to years) large flux variability associated with the appearance or disappearance of optical broad emission lines. We discuss how polarization measurements could help to distinguish which of the several scenarios proposed to explain such variations is/are the most likely. We collected past polarization measurements of nearby, Seyfert-like CLAGNs and take stock that almost all polarimetric information we have on those f…
In this manuscript, we proposed an interesting method to test the dual supermassive black hole model for AGN with double-peaked narrow \oiii lines (double-peaked narrow emitters), through their broad optical Balmer line properties. Under the dual supermassive black hole model for double-peaked narrow emitters, we could expect statistically smaller virial black hole masses estimated by observed broad Balmer line properties than true black hole masses (total masses of central two black holes). Then, we compare the virial black hole masses between a sample of 37 double-peaked narrow emitters with…
We investigate if the active galactic nucleus (AGN) of Mrk 590, whose supermassive black hole was until recently highly accreting, is turning off due to a lack of central gas to fuel it. We analyse new sub-arcsecond resolution ALMA maps of the $^{12}$CO(3-2) line and 344 GHz continuum emission in Mrk 590. We detect no $^{12}$CO(3-2) emission in the inner 150 pc, constraining the central molecular gas mass to $M({\rm H_2}) \lesssim 1.6 \times 10^5\, {M_{\odot}}$, no more than a typical giant molecular gas cloud, for a CO luminosity to gas mass conversion factor of $α_{\rm CO}\sim 0.8\,{M_{\odot…

In the manuscript, we discuss properties of the SDSS J1042-0018 which is a broad line AGN but mis-classified as a HII galaxy in the BPT diagram (SDSS J1042-0018 called as a mis-classified broad line AGN). The emission lines around H$α$ and around H$β$ are well described by different model functions, considering broad Balmer lines to be described by Gaussian or Lorentz functions. Different model functions lead to different determined narrow emission line fluxes, but the different narrow emission line flux ratios lead the SDSS J1042-0018 as a HII galaxy in the BPT diagram. In order to explain th…
We report a new changing-look quasar, WISE~J105203.55+151929.5 at $z=0.303$, found by identifying highly mid-IR variable quasars in the WISE/NEOWISE data stream. Compared to multi-epoch mid-IR photometry of a large sample of SDSS-confirmed quasars, WISE J1052+1519 is an extreme photometric outlier, fading by more than a factor of two at $3.4$ and $4.6 μ$m since 2009. Swift target-of-opportunity observations in 2017 show even stronger fading in the soft X-rays compared to the ROSAT detection of this source in 1995, with at least a factor of fifteen decrease. We obtained second-epoch spectroscop…
