While nearly all theoretical and computational studies of entangled polymer melts have focused on uniform samples, polymer synthesis routes always result in some dispersity, albeit narrow, of distribution of molecular weights (D_M=M_w/M_n ~ 1.02-1.04). Here the effects of dispersity on chain mobility are studied for entangled, disperse melts using a coarse-grained model for polyethylene. Polymer melts with chain lengths set to follow a Schulz-Zimm distribution for the same average M_w = 36 kg/mol with D_M = 1.0 to 1.16, were studied for times of $600-800$ $μ$s using molecular dynamics simulations. This time frame is longer than the time required to reach the diffusive regime. We find that dispersity in this range does not affect the entanglement time or tube diameter. However, while there is negligible difference in the average mobility of chains for the uniform distribution D_M=1.0 and D_M = 1.02, the shortest chains move significantly faster than the longest ones offering a constraint release pathway for the melts for larger D_M.
We investigate the effect of polymer length dispersity on the properties of self-assembled micelles in solution by self-consistent field calculations. Polydispersity stabilizes micelles by raising the free energy barriers of micelle formation and dissolution. Most importantly, it significantly reduces the size fluctuations of micelles: Block copolymers of moderate polydispersity form more uniform particles than their monodisperse counterparts. We attribute this to the fact that the packing of the solvophobic monomers in the core can be optimized if the constituent polymers have different lengt…

Ring polymers remain a major challenge to our current understanding of polymer dynamics. Experimental results are difficult to interpret because of the uncertainty in the purity and dispersity of the sample. Using both equilibrium and non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations we have systematically investigated the structure, dynamics and rheology of perfectly controlled ring/linear polymer blends with chains of such length and flexibility that the number of entanglements is up to about 14 per chain, which is comparable to experimental systems examined in the literature. The smallest conc…
Electrophoretic (EP) mobility reversal is commonly observed for strongly charged macromolecules in multivalent salt solutions. This curious effect takes place, e.g., when a charged polymer, such as DNA, adsorbs excess counterions so that the counterion-dressed surface charge reverses its sign, leading to the inversion of the polymer drift driven by an external electric field. In order to characterize this seemingly counterintuitive phenomenon that cannot be captured by electrostatic mean-field theories, we adapt here a previously developed strong-coupling-dressed Poisson-Boltzmann approach to …
We propose a simple dynamic model of polymers under shear with an anisotropic mobility tensor. We calculate the shear viscosity, the rheo-dielectric response function, and the parallel relaxation modulus under shear flow deduced from our model. We utilize recently developed linear response theories for nonequilibrium systems to calculate linear response functions. Our results are qualitatively consistent with experimental results. We show that our anisotropic mobility model can reproduce essential dynamical nature of polymers under shear qualitatively. We compare our model with other models or…
We study the dynamics of local bond orientation in regular hyperbranched polymers modeled by Vicsek fractals. The local dynamics is investigated through the temporal autocorrelation functions of single bonds and the corresponding relaxation forms of the complex dielectric susceptibility. We show that the dynamic behavior of single segments depends on their remoteness from the periphery rather than on the size of the whole macromolecule. Remarkably, the dynamics of the core segments (which are most remote from the periphery) shows a scaling behavior that differs from the dynamics obtained after…
We propose a dynamic coarse-graining (CG) scheme for mapping heterogeneous polymer fluids onto extremely CG models in a dynamically consistent manner. The idea is to use as target function for the mapping a wave-vector dependent mobility function derived from the single-chain dynamic structure factor, which is calculated in the microscopic reference system. In previous work, we have shown that dynamic density functional calculations based on this mobility function can accurately reproduce the order/disorder kinetics in polymer melts, thus it is a suitable starting point for dynamic mapping. To…
Diffusive transport of small molecules within the internal structures of biological and synthetic material systems is complex because the crowded environment presents chemical and physical barriers to mobility. We explored this mobility using a synthetic experimental system of small dye molecules diffusing within a polymer network at short time scales. We find that the diffusion of inert molecules is inhibited by the presence of the polymers. Counter-intuitively, small, hydrophobic molecules display smaller reduction in mobility and also able to diffuse faster through the system by leveraging …
We describe a series of surface levelling experiments in glassy polystyrene (PS) of varying molecular weight. The evolution through a mobile surface layer is described by the glassy thin film equation that was introduced and used in a previous work. Excellent agreement with the data is achieved, with surface mobility as the single free parameter. Different molecular-weight dependencies in mobility are then observed above and below the glass transition. The results are discussed in terms of surface-chain anchoring in the bulk matrix, and the length scale for surface mobility.
Free surfaces in glassy polymer films are known to induce surface mobile layers with enhanced dynamics. Using molecular dynamics simulations of a bead-spring model, we study a wide variety of layer-resolved structural and dynamical properties of polymer films equilibrated at a low temperature. Surface enhancement on thermally induced particle hopping rate is found to terminate abruptly only about 5 particle diameters from the free surface. In contrast, enhancement on the net motions of particles measured at longer time scales penetrates at least 2 particle diameters deeper. The diverse penetra…
We show that in monomeric supercooled liquids and glasses that are plastically flowing at a constant shear stress $σ$ while being deformed with strain rate $\dotε$, the microscopic structural relaxation time $τ_{\rm str}$ is given by the universal relation $σ/G_\infty\dotε$ with $G_\infty$ a modulus. This equality holds for all rheological regimes from temperatures above the glass transition all the way to the athermal limit, and arises from the competing effects of elastic loading and viscous dissipation. In macromolecular (polymeric) glasses, however, the stress decouples from this relaxatio…
Transient networks comprised of polymers connected by short-lived bonds are a common design theme for both biological and synthetic materials. Transient bonds can provide mechanical rigidity, while still allowing for visco-elastic flows on timescales longer than the bond lifetime. In many biological polymer networks such as the actin cytoskeleton, the short-lived bonds are formed by accessory proteins that diffuse away after unbinding. By contrast, bonds in synthetic networks, such as the pendant groups of telechelic polymers, can only rebind in the same location. Using a recently developed th…
We report a numerical study of the diffusiophoresis of short polymers using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. More precisely, we consider polymer chains in a fluid containing a solute which has a concentration gradient, and examine the variation of the induced diffusiophoretic velocity of the polymer chains as the interaction between the monomer and the solute is varied. We find that there is a non-monotonic relation between the diffusiophoretic mobility and the strength of the monomer-solute interaction. In addition we find a weak dependence of the mobility on the length of the …
We present an extensive molecular dynamics (MD) simulation study of the lithium ion transport in ternary polymer electrolytes consisting of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), lithium-bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide (LiTFSI) and the ionic liquid N-methyl-N-propylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide (PYR13TFSI). In particular, we focus on two different strategies by which the ternary electrolytes can be devised, namely by (a) adding the ionic liquid to PEO20LiTFSI, and (b) substituting the PEO chains in PEO20LiTFSI by the ionic liquid. In order to grasp the changes of the overall lithium tra…
The hydrodynamic forces between Brownian spheres are determined from a measurement of the correlated thermal fluctuations in particle position using a new method, two-particle cross-correlation spectroscopy (TCS). A pair of 1.3 um diameter polymer-coated poly(methyl methacrylate) were held at separations of between 2 um and 20 um using optical traps. The mobility tensor is determined directly from the statistically-averaged Brownian fluctuations of the two spheres. The observed distance dependence of the mobility tensor is in quantitative agreement with low-Reynolds number calculations.
Thin polymer films have striking dynamical properties that differ from their bulk counterparts. With the simple geometry of a stepped polymer film on a substrate, we probe mobility above and below the glass transition temperature $T_{\textrm{g}}$. Above $T_{\textrm{g}}$ the entire film flows, while below $T_{\textrm{g}}$ only the near surface region responds to the excess interfacial energy. An analytical thin film model for flow limited to the free surface region shows excellent agreement with sub-$T_{\textrm{g}}$ data. The system transitions from whole film flow to surface localized flow ove…
The influence of substrate treatment with self-assembled monolayers and thermal annealing was analysed by electrical and structural measurements on field-effect transistors (FETs) and metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) diodes using poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) as a semiconducting polymer and Si/SiO2 wafers as a substrate. It is found that surface treatment using silanising agents like hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) and octadecyltrichlorosi-lane (OTS) can increase the field-effect mobility by up to a factor of 50, reaching values in saturation of more than 4E-2 cm^2/Vs at room temperature. While…
We explore the transport features of a single flexible polymer chain that walks on a periodic ratchet potential coupled with spatially varying temperature. At steady state the polymer exhibits a fast unidirectional motion where the intensity of its current rectification depends strongly on its elastic strength and size. Analytic and numerical analysis reveal that the steady state transport of the polymer can be controlled by attenuating the strength of the elastic constant. Furthermore, the stall force at which the chain current vanishes is independent of the chain length and coupling strength…
Processes on different length scales affect the dynamics of chain molecules. In this work, we focus on structures on the scale of a monomer and investigate polyolefins, i.e. hydrocarbon chains with different small scale architectures. We present an exact enumeration scheme for the simulation of interactions and relative motion of two short chain sections on a lattice and employ it to deduce the probability for segmental motion for polymers of four different architectures in the melt. The probability for segmental motion is inversely proportional to the monomeric friction coefficient and hence …
Structure, Dynamics and Hydrogen Transport in Amorphous Polymers: An Analysis of the Interplay Between Free Volume Element Distribution and Local Segmental Dynamics from Molecular Dynamics Simulations
We propose a new method for electrophoretic separation of DNA in which adsorbed polymers are driven over a disordered two-dimensional substrate which contains attractive sites for the polymers. Using simulations of a model for long polymer chains, we show that the mobility increases with polymer length, in contrast to gel electrophoresis techniques, and that separation can be achieved for a range of length scales. We demonstrate that the separation mechanism relies on steric interactions between polymer segments, which prevent substrate disorder sites from trapping more than one DNA segment ea…
Charge-carrier transport in a paradigmatic semicrystalline polymer semiconductor (P3HT) is important for both fundamental understanding and applications. In samples with enhanced structural disorder due to ad-hoc point defects, the mobility displays rich behavior as a function of electric field (F) and temperature (T). At low T, the mobility increases with the applied field, but upon further increasing T, the field-dependence becomes shallower. Eventually, at the highest T considered, the slope changes sign and the mobility then decreases with the field. This phenomenon can be interpreted with…
The coupled dynamics of entangled polymers which span a broad time and length scales govern the unique viscoelastic properties of polymers. To follow chain mobility by numerical simulations from the intermediate Rouse and reptation regimes to the late time diffusive regime, highly coarse grained models with purely repulsive interactions between monomers are widely used since they are computationally the most efficient. Here using large scale molecular dynamics simulations the effect of including the attractive interaction between monomers on the dynamics of entangled polymers melts is explored…
We consider single particle and polymer translocation where the frictional properties experienced from the environment are changing in time. This work is motivated by the interesting frequency responsive behaviour observed when a polymer is passing through a pore with an oscillating width. In order to explain this better we construct general diffusive and non-diffusive frequency response of the gain in translocation time for a single particle in changing environments and look at some specific variations. For two state confinement, where the particle either has constant drift velocity or is sta…
A homogeneous thin polymer film with a stepped height profile levels due to the presence of Laplace pressure gradients. Here we report on studies of polymeric samples with precisely controlled, spatially inhomogeneous molecular weight distributions. The viscosity of a polymer melt strongly depends on the chain length distribution; thus, we learn about thin-film hydrodynamics with viscosity gradients. These gradients are achieved by stacking two films with different molecular weights atop one another. After a sufficient time these samples can be well described as having one dimensional viscosit…
We propose and compare different strategies to construct dynamic density functional theories (DDFTs) for inhomogeneous polymer systems close to equilibrium from microscopic simulation trajectories. We focus on the systematic construction of the mobility coefficient, $Λ(r,r')$, which relates the thermodynamic driving force on monomers at position $r'$ to the motion of monomers at position $r$. A first approach based on the Green-Kubo formalism turns out to be impractical because of a severe plateau problem. Instead, we propose to extract the mobility coefficient from an effective characteristic…
Solid polymer electrolytes are considered a promising alternative to traditional liquid electrolytes in energy storage applications because of their good mechanical properties, and excellent thermal and chemical stability. A gap, however, still exists in understanding ion transport mechanisms and improving ion transport in solid polymer electrolytes. Therefore, it is crucial to bridge composition--structure and structure--property relationships. Here we demonstrate that size asymmetry, $λ$, represented by the ratio of counterion to charged monomer size, plays a key role in both the nanostructu…
The mobility of polymer chains in perfect polyethylene (PE) crystal was calculated as a function of temperature and chain length through Molecular dynamics (MD) in united atom approximation. The results demonstrate that the chain mobility drastically increases in the vicinity of the phase transition from the orthorhombic to quasi-hexagonal phase. In the quasi-hexagonal phase, the chain mobility is almost independent on temperature and inversely proportional to the chain length.
The local dynamical features of a PEO melt studied by MD simulations are compared to two model chain systems, namely the well-known Rouse model as well as the semiflexible chain model (SFCM) that additionally incorporates chain stiffness. Apart from the analysis of rather general quantities such as the mean square displacement (MSD), we present a new statistical method to extract the local bead mobility from the simulation data on the basis of the Langevin equation, thus providing a complementary approach to the classical Rouse-mode analysis. This allows us to check the validity of the Langevi…
The lithium transport mechanism in ternary polymer electrolytes, consisting of PEO/LiTFSI and various fractions of the ionic liquid N-methyl-N-propylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide, are investigated by means of MD simulations. This is motivated by recent experimental findings [Passerini et al., Electrochim. Acta 2012, 86, 330-338], which demonstrated that these materials display an enhanced lithium mobility relative to their binary counterpart PEO/LiTFSI. In order to grasp the underlying microscopic scenario giving rise to these observations, we employ an analytical, Rouse-based…
Cracking the whip accelerates the tail of a chain to hit the air loudly and clearly. We proved that the similar acceleration effect causes coil deformation of driven chain-like polymers. We first preformed Monte Carlo simulations of a single driven polymer coil to demonstrate its deformation in company with faster or slower deviations of velocities. We then performed parallel Brownian Dynamics simulations to demonstrate that the coil deformation can be caused by the so-called "cracking-the-whip" effect due to non-synchronous biased Brownian motions of monomers inherited in Monte Carlo simulati…
The Monte Carlo carbyne model is modified to investigate the glass transition of the semi-flexible entangled polymer chains. The stochastic bombardment between monomers are monitored by Metropolis algorithm with help of the consideration of hard potential while the mobility of monomers is governed by its mass, scattering rate and temperature. Our model is capable to show that the glass transition temperature reduces with decreasing film thickness and the formation of critical voids in the thinner polymer contributing to the glass transition that is much easier than the bulk polymer.
We present a Brownian dynamics theory with full hydrodynamics (Stokesian dynamics) for a Gaussian polymer chain embedded in a liquid membrane which is surrounded by bulk solvent and walls. The mobility tensors are derived in Fourier space for the two geometries, namely, a free membrane embedded in a bulk fluid, and a membrane sandwiched by the two walls. Within the preaveraging approximation, a new expression for the diffusion coefficient of the polymer is obtained for the free membrane geometry. We also carry out a Rouse normal mode analysis to obtain the relaxation time and the dynamical str…
The presence of a viscoelastic mechanism distinctly different from the segmental a-relaxation and the Rouse modes within the glass-rubber transition zone of polymers had been justified by theoretical considerations, and subsequently experimentally verified in different bulk polymers by various techniques, and in several laboratories. Referred to in the literature as the sub-Rouse modes, they were also found in polymer thin films by the creep compliance measurements of McKenna and co-workers Established by experiment and theoretical considerations is the enhanced mobility of sub-Rouse modes in …
We present an extensive set of simulation results for the stress relaxation in equilibrium and step-strained bead-spring polymer melts. The data allow us to explore the chain dynamics and the shear relaxation modulus, $G(t)$, into the plateau regime for chains with $Z=40$ entanglements and into the terminal relaxation regime for $Z=10$. Using the known (Rouse) mobility of unentangled chains and the melt entanglement length determined via the primitive path analysis of the microscopic topological state of our systems, we have performed parameter -free tests of several different tube models. We …

Colloid-polymer mixtures may undergo either fluid-fluid phase separation or gelation. This depends on the depth of the quench (polymer concentration) and polymer-colloid size ratio. We present a real-space study of dynamics in phase separating colloid-polymer mixtures with medium- to long-range attractions (polymer-colloid size ratio q_R=0.45-0.89, with the aim of understanding the mechanism of gelation as the range of the attraction is changed. In contrast to previous studies of short-range attractive systems, where gelation occurs shortly after crossing the equilibrium phase boundary, we fin…
To study the cooling behavior and the glass transition of polymer melts in bulk and with free surfaces a coarse-grained weakly semi-flexible polymer model is developed. Based on a standard bead spring model with purely repulsive interactions an attractive potential between non-bonded monomers is added, such that the pressure of polymer melts is tuned to zero. Additionally, the commonly used bond bending potential [Everaers et al., Science 303, 823 (2004)] controlling the chain stiffness is replaced by a new bond bending potential. For this model, we show that the Kuhn length and the internal d…
We consider the diffusive motion of a localized knot along a linear polymer chain. In particular, we derive the mean diffusion time of the knot before it escapes from the chain once it gets close to one of the chain ends. Self-reptation of the entire chain between either end and the knot position, during which the knot is provided with free volume, leads to an L^3 scaling of diffusion time; for sufficiently long chains, subdiffusion will enhance this time even more. Conversely, we propose local ``breathing'', i.e., local conformational rearrangement inside the knot region (KR) and its immediat…
Physically confining polymers into nanoscale pores induces significant changes in their dynamics. Although different results on the effect of confinement on the dynamics of polymers have been reported, changes in the segmental mobility of polymers typically are correlated with changes in their chain mobility due to increased monomeric relaxation times. In this study, we show that translational and segmental dynamics of polymers confined in disordered packings of nanoparticles can exhibit completely opposite behavior. We monitor the capillary rise dynamics of entangled polystyrene (PS) in disor…
We carefully examine common measures of dynamical heterogeneity for a model polymer melt and test how these scales compare with those hypothesized by the Adam and Gibbs (AG) and random first-order transition (RFOT) theories of relaxation in glass-forming liquids. To this end, we first analyze clusters of highly mobile particles, the string-like collective motion of these mobile particles, and clusters of relative low mobility. We show that the time scale of the high-mobility clusters and strings is associated with a diffusive time scale, while the low-mobility particles' time scale relates to …
Bonding between polymeric interfaces is encountered widely in several industrial applications. Many of these bonding processes rely on time-consuming and temperature-dependent classical mechanism of polymer interdiffusion via reptation in a melt state. Here, for the first time, we report a new mechanistic pathway for achieving solid-state polymer bonding by triggering rapid macromolecular acceleration through mechanical deformation. Large-scale molecular simulations reveal that active plastic deformation in glassy polymers, at temperatures well-below the bulk (and surface) glass transition tem…
Using Couette and Poiseuille flow, we extract the temperature dependence of the slip length, $δ$, from molecular dynamics simulations of a coarse-grained polymer model in contact with an attractive, corrugated surface. $δ$ is dictated by the ratio of bulk viscosity and surface mobility. At weakly attractive surfaces, a lubrication layer forms, $δ$ is large and increases upon cooling. Close to the glass transition temperature, $T_ g$, very large slip lengths are observed. At a more attractive surface, a``stick y surface layer" is build up, which gives rise to a small slip length. Upon cool ing,…
We derive a thermodynamically consistent framework for incorporating entanglement dynamics into constitutive equations for flowing polymer melts. We use this to combine the convected constraint release (CCR) dynamics of Ianniruberto-Marriccui into a finitely-extensible version of the Rolie-Poly model, and also include an anisotropic mobility as in the Giesekus model. The reversible dynamics are obtained from a free energy that describes both a finitely-extensible conformation tensor and an ideal gas of entanglements along the chain. The dissipative dynamics give rise to coupled kinetic equatio…
