In the elastic shape analysis approach to shape matching and object classification, plane curves are represented as points in an infinite-dimensional Riemannian manifold, wherein shape dissimilarity is measured by geodesic distance. A remarkable result of Younes, Michor, Shah and Mumford says that the space of closed planar shapes, endowed with a natural metric, is isometric to an infinite-dimensional Grassmann manifold via the so-called square root transform. This result facilitates efficient shape comparison by virtue of explicit descriptions of Grassmannian geodesics. In this paper, we extend this shape analysis framework to treat shapes of framed space curves. By considering framed curves, we are able to generalize the square root transform by using quaternionic arithmetic and properties of the Hopf fibration. Under our coordinate transformation, the space of closed framed curves corresponds to an infinite-dimensional complex Grassmannian. This allows us to describe geodesics in framed curve space explicitly. We are also able to produce explicit geodesics between closed, unframed space curves by studying the action of the loop group of the circle on the Grassmann manifold. Averages of collections of plane and space curves are computed via a novel algorithm utilizing flag means.
We introduce circular evolutes and involutes of framed curves in the Euclidean space. Circular evolutes of framed curves stem from the curvature circles of Bishop directions and singular value sets of normal surfaces of Bishop directions. On the other hand, involutes of framed curves are direct generalizations of involutes of regular space curves and frontals in the Euclidean plane. We investigate properties of normal surfaces, circular evolutes, and involutes of framed curves. We can observe that taking circular evolutes and involutes of framed curves are opposite operations under suitable as…
A Bertrand curve in the 4-dimensional Euclidean space is a space curve whose first normal line is the same as the first normal line of another curve. On the other hand, a Mannheim curve in the 4-dimensional Euclidean space is a space curve whose first normal line is the same as the second or third normal line of another curve. By definitions, another curve is a parallel curve with respect to the direction of the first normal vector. As smooth curves with singular points, we consider framed curves in the Euclidean space. Then we define and investigate Bertrand and Mannheim curves of framed curv…
The generic singularities and bifurcations are classified for one-parameter families of curves with frames in a space form, the Euclidean space, the elliptic space or the hyperbolic space via projective geometry. Two kinds of frames are considered, adapted frames and osculating frames, in terms of certain differential systems on flag manifolds.
Kirchhoff energy is a classical functional on the space of arclength-parameterized framed curves whose critical points approximate configurations of springy elastic rods. We introduce a generalized functional on the space of framed curves of arbitrary parameterization, which model rods with axial stretch or cross-sectional inflation. Our main result gives explicit parameterizations for all periodic critical framed curves for this generalized functional. The main technical tool is a correspondence between the moduli space of shape similarity classes of closed framed curves and an infinite-dimen…
We consider the space $\mathcal{M}$ of Euclidean similarity classes of framed loops in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Framed loop space is shown to be an infinite-dimensional Kähler manifold by identifying it with a complex Grassmannian. We show that the space of isometrically immersed loops studied by Millson and Zombro is realized as the symplectic reduction of $\mathcal{M}$ by the action of the based loop group of the circle, giving a smooth version of a result of Hausmann and Knutson on polygon space. The identification with a Grassmannian allows us to describe the geodesics of $\mathcal{M}$ explicitly. …
This paper deals with the concept of curvature of framed space curves, their higher-order derivatives, variations, and co-rotational derivatives. We realize that parametrizing rotation tensor using the Gibbs vector is effective in deriving a closed form formula to obtain any order derivative of the curvature tensor as the summation of functions of the parametrizing quantity and its derivatives. We use these results for formulating a linearized updating algorithm for curvature and its derivatives when the configuration of the curve acquires a small increment. Finally, the MATLAB code to obtain …
We discuss how the shape of a special Cosserat rod can be represented as a path in the special Euclidean algebra. By shape we mean all those geometric features that are invariant under isometries of the three-dimensional ambient space. The representation of the shape as a path in the special Euclidean algebra is intrinsic to the description of the mechanical properties of a rod, since it is given directly in terms of the strain fields that stimulate the elastic response of special Cosserat rods. Moreover, such a representation leads naturally to discretization schemes that avoid the need for t…
We show that the moduli space $M$ of holomorphic vector bundles on $CP^3$ that are trivial along a line is isomorphic (as a complex manifold) to a subvariety in the moduli of rational curves of the twistor space of the moduli space of framed instantons on $\R^4$, called the space of twistor sections. We then use this characterization to prove that $M$ is equipped with a torsion-free affine connection with holonomy in $Sp(2n,\C)$.
For Legendre curves, we consider surfaces of revolution of frontals. The surface of revolution of a frontal can be considered as a framed base surface. We give the curvatures and basic invariants for surfaces of revolution by using the curvatures of Legendre curves. Moreover, we give properties of surfaces of revolution with singularities and cones.
Object of study in the present paper are slant and Legendre null curves in 3-dimensional Sasaki-like almost contact B-metric manifolds. For the examined curves we express the general Frenet frame and the Frenet frame for which the original parameter is distinguished, as well as the corresponding curvatures, in terms of the structure on the manifold. We prove that the curvatures of a framed null slant and Legendre curve are constants if and only if a specific function for the considered manifolds is a constant. We find a necessary and sufficient condition a slant null curve to be a generalized …
The manifold $\mathcal{M}$ of star-shaped curves in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is considered via the theory of connections on vector bundles, and cyclic $\mathcal{D}$-modules. The appropriate notion of an "integral curve" (i.e. certain admissible deformations) on $\mathcal{M}$ is defined, and the resulting space of admissible deformations is classified via iso-spectral flows, which are shown to be described by equations from the $n$-KdV hierarchy.
A principal Higgs bundle $(P,ϕ)$ over a singular curve $X$ is a pair consisting of a principal bundle $P$ and a morphism $ϕ:X\to\text{Ad}P \otimes Ω^1_X$. We construct the moduli space of principal Higgs G-bundles over an irreducible singular curve $X$ using the theory of decorated vector bundles. More precisely, given a faithful representation $ρ:G\to Sl(V)$ of $G$, we consider principal Higgs bundles as triples $(E,q,ϕ)$ where $E$ is a vector bundle with $\rk{E}=\dim V$ over the normalization $\xtilde$ of $X$, $q$ is a parabolic structure on $E$ and $ϕ:E\ab{}\to L$ is a morphism of bundles, …
In this paper we prove that the space of differential invariants for curves with arc-length parameter in the light cone of Lorentzian $\mathbb{R}^4$, invariants under the centro-affine action of the Lorentzian group, is Poisson equivalent to the space of conformal differential invariants for curves in the Möbius sphere. We use this relation to find realizations of solutions of a complexly coupled system of KdV equations as flows of curves in the cone.
We present a novel, log-radius profile representation for convex curves and define a new operation for combining the shape features of curves. Unlike the standard, angle profile-based methods, this operation accurately combines the shape features in a visually intuitive manner. This method have implications in shape analysis as well as in investigating how the brain perceives and generates curved shapes and motions.
A classical result in Riemannian geometry states that the absolutely continuous curves into a (finite-dimensional) Riemannian manifold form an infinite-dimensional manifold. In the present paper this construction and related results are generalised to absolutely continuous curves with values in a strong Riemannian manifolds. As an application we consider extensions of the square root velocity transform (SRVT) framework for shape analysis. Computations in this framework frequently lead to curves which leave the shape space (of smooth curves), and are only contained in a completion. In the vecto…
In the shape analysis approach to computer vision problems, one treats shapes as points in an infinite-dimensional Riemannian manifold, thereby facilitating algorithms for statistical calculations such as geodesic distance between shapes and averaging of a collection of shapes. The performance of these algorithms depends heavily on the choice of the Riemannian metric. In the setting of plane curve shapes, attention has largely been focused on a two-parameter family of first order Sobolev metrics, referred to as elastic metrics. They are particularly useful due to the existence of simplifying c…
Geometric reduction of the Newtonian planar three-body problem is investigated in the framework of equivariant Riemannian geometry, which reduces the study of trajectories of three-body motions to the study of their moduli curves, that is, curves which record the change of size and shape, in the moduli space of oriented mass-triangles. The latter space is a Riemannian cone over the shape 2-sphere, and the shape curve is the image curve on this sphere. It is shown that the time parametrized moduli curve is in general determined by the relative geometry of the shape curve and the shape potential…
This paper is devoted to the study of unparameterized simple curves in the plane. We propose diverse canonical parameterizations of a 2D-curve. For instance, the arc-length parameterization is canonical, but we consider other natural parameterizations like the parameterization proportionnal to the curvature of the curve. Both aforementionned parameterizations are very natural and correspond to a natural physical movement: the arc-length parameterization corresponds to travelling along the curve at constant speed, whereas parameterization proportionnal to curvature corresponds to a constant-spe…
In this paper, we revisit the notion of length measures associated to planar closed curves. These are a special case of area measures of hypersurfaces which were introduced early on in the field of convex geometry. The length measure of a curve is a measure on the circle $\mathbb{S}^1$ that intuitively represents the length of the portion of curve which tangent vector points in a certain direction. While a planar closed curve is not characterized by its length measure, the fundamental Minkowski-Fenchel-Jessen theorem states that length measures fully characterize convex curves modulo translati…

The modeling and uncertainty quantification of closed curves is an important problem in the field of shape analysis, and can have significant ramifications for subsequent statistical tasks. Many of these tasks involve collections of closed curves, which often exhibit structural similarities at multiple levels. Modeling multiple closed curves in a way that efficiently incorporates such between-curve dependence remains a challenging problem. In this work, we propose and investigate a multiple-output (a.k.a. multi-output), multi-dimensional Gaussian process modeling framework. We illustrate the p…
