We present new observations of the large-scale radio emission surrounding the lenticular galaxy NGC~1534 with the Australia Telescope Compact Array and Murchison Widefield Array. We find no significant compact emission from the nucleus of NGC 1534 to suggest an active core, and instead find low-power radio emission tracing its star-formation history with a radio-derived star-formation rate of $0.38\pm0.03$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. The spectral energy distribution of the extended emission is well-fit by a continuous injection model with an 'off' component, consistent with dead radio galaxies. We find the spectral age of the emission to be 203 Myr, having been active for 44 Myr. Polarimetric analysis points to both a large-scale magneto-ionic Galactic foreground at $+33$ rad m$^{-2}$ and a component associated with the northern lobe of the radio emission at $-153$ rad m$^{-2}$. The magnetic field of the northern lobe shows an unusual circular pattern of unknown origin. While such remnant sources are rare, combined low- and high-frequency radio surveys with high surface-brightness sensitivities are expected to greatly increase their numbers in the coming decade, and combined with new optical and infrared surveys should provide a wealth of information on the hosts of the emission.
An investigation on the possible dynamical models of the core galaxy NGC 1399 is performed. Because early-type galaxies are likely to be formed through merging events, remnant rings are considered in the modeling process. A numerical survey over three parameters is employed to obtain the best-fit models that are completely consistent with observations. It is found that the inner slope of dark matter profile is a cuspy one for this core galaxy. The existence of remnant rings in best-fit models indicates a merging history. The remnant ring explains the flatten surface brightness, and thus could …
We present a systematic study of the Supernova Remnant (SNR) populations in the nearby galaxies NGC 45, NGC 55, NGC 1313, and NGC 7793 based on deep Ha and [S II] imaging. We find 42 candidate and 54 possible candidate SNRs based on the [S II] / Ha > 0.4 criterion, 84 of which are new identifications. We derive the Ha and the joint [S II]-Ha luminosity functions after accounting for incompleteness effects. We find that the Ha luminosity function of the overall sample is described with a skewed Gaussian with a mean equal to log(LHa / 10^(36) erg s^(-1)) = 0.07 and m(log(LHa / 10^(36) erg s^(-1)…
We present Fabry-Perot observations in the H$α$ and [S II] lines to study the kinematics of the Magellanic-type dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 1569, these observations allowed us to computed the H$α$ velocity field of this galaxy. Doing a detailed analysis of the velocity along the line-of-sight and H$α$ velocity profiles, we identified the origin of most of the motions in the innermost parts of the galaxy and discarded the possibility of deriving a rotation curve that traces the gravitational well of the galaxy. We analysed the kinematics of the ionised gas around 31 supernova remnants previously…
We present detection of 67 HII regions and two optical supernova remnant (SNR) candidates in the nearby irregular galaxy NGC 2366. The SNR candidates were detected by applying [SII]/H$α$ ratio criterion to observations made with the 2-m RCC telescope at Rozhen National Astronomical Observatory in Bulgaria. In this paper we report coordinates, diameters, H$α$ and [SII] fluxes for detected objects across the two fields of view in NGC 2366 galaxy. Using archival XMM-Newton observations we suggest possible X-ray counterparts of two optical SNR candidates. Also, we discard classification of two pre…
NGC7252, which is one of the nearest major-merger galaxy remnants, is an ideal laboratory to study the processes inherent to the transformation of disc galaxies to ellipticals as observed about ~1Gyr after the collision. We obtained wide-field IFU spectroscopy with the VLT-VIMOS integral-field spectrograph covering the central 50"x50" of NGC7252 to map the stellar and ionised gas kinematics, and the distribution and conditions of the ionised gas, revealing the extent of ongoing star formation and recent star formation history. We find that the inner gas disc is not counter-rotating with respec…
We present the first optical identification and confirmation of a sample of supernova remnants (SNRs) in the nearby galaxy NGC3344. Using high spectral and spatial resolution data, obtained with the CFHT imaging Fourier transform spectrograph SITELLE, we identified about 2200 emission line regions, many of which are HII regions, diffuse ionized gas regions, and also SNRs. Considering the stellar population and diffuse ionized gas background, that are quite important in NGC3344, we have selected 129 SNR candidates based on four criteria for regions where the emission lines flux ratio [S II]/H$α…
The upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) has been used to map the cluster A2065 at z = 0.0726. We report the discovery of a remnant radio galaxy at the peripheral cluster region. The spatially resolved radio emission from the remnant radio galaxy shows an elongated, bar-shaped structure, whose size is $\approx$ 52$^{\prime\prime}$ $\times$ 110$^{\prime\prime}$ ($\simeq$ 72 $\times$ 152 kpc$^2$). Our study with the multiwavelength GMRT data and \textit{Chandra} data shows that across the remnant radio galaxy there is a hint of a surface-brightness edge in the hot X-ray gas. We detect…
The planetary nebula known as the Cat's Eye Nebula (NGC 6543) has a complex, point-symmetric morphology that cannot be fully explained by the current theory of planetary nebula formation, the Interacting Stellar Winds Model. In order to reveal the three dimensional (3D) structure of the Cat's Eye Nebula, we created a detailed 3D morpho-kinematic model of this nebula using a [NII] image from the Hubble Space Telescope and five different position-velocity diagrams using the SHAPE code. This modeling approach has revealed point-symmetric partial rings, which were likely formed by a precessing jet…
The results of an optical search for supernova remnants (SNRs) in the nearby irregular galaxy NGC 2366 are presented. We took interference filter images and collected spectral data in three epochs with the f/7.7 1.5 m Russian Turkish Telescope (RTT150) at TÜBİTAK National Observatory (TUG) located in Antalya, Turkey. The continuum-subtracted H$α$ and continuum-subtracted [SII]$λλ$6716, 6731 images and their ratios were used for the identification of SNRs. With [SII]/H$α$ $\geq$ 0.4 criteria, four possible SNR candidates were identified in NGC 2366 with [SII]/H$α$ ratios of $\sim$(0.68, 0.57, 0…
MUSE-based emission-line maps of the spiral galaxy NGC 4030 reveal the existence of unresolved sources with forbidden line emission enhanced with respect to those seen in its own HII regions. This study reports our efforts to detect and isolate these objects and identify their nature. Candidates are first detected as unresolved sources on an image of the second principal component of the Hb, [OIII]5007, Ha, [NII]6584, [SII]6716, 6731 emission-line data cube, where they stand out clearly against both the dominant HII region population and the widespread diffuse emission. The intrinsic emission …
A strong effort has been devoted to understand the physical origin of radio emission from low-luminosity AGN (LLAGN), but a comprehensive picture is still missing. We used high-resolution ($\le$1 arcsec), multi-frequency (1.5, 5.5, 9 and 14 GHz) NSF's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) observations to characterise the state of the nuclear region of ten Seyfert nuclei, which are the faintest members of a complete, distance-limited sample of 28 sources. With the sensitivity and resolution guaranteed by the VLA-A configuration, we measured radio emission for six sources (NGC3185, NGC3941, NGC4…
The merger remnant NGC 34 is a local luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) hosting a nuclear starburst and a hard X-ray source associated with a putative, obscured Seyfert~2 nucleus. In this work, we use adaptive optics assisted near infrared (NIR) integral field unit observations of this galaxy to map the distribution and kinematics of the ionized and molecular gas in its inner $\mathrm{1.2\,kpc \times 1.2\,kpc}$, with a spatial resolution of 70~pc. The molecular and ionized gas kinematics is consistent with a disc with projected major axis along a mean PA~=~$\mathrm{-9^{\circ}.2 \pm 0^{\circ}.9}$.…
We present a high-resolution smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulation of the Antennae galaxies (NGC 4038/4039) and follow the evolution $3$ Gyrs beyond the final coalescence. The simulation includes metallicity dependent cooling, star formation, and both stellar feedback and chemical enrichment. The simulated best-match Antennae reproduces well both the observed morphology and the off-nuclear starburst. We also produce for the first time a simulated two-dimensional metallicity map of the Antennae and find good agreement with the observed metallicity of off-nuclear stellar clusters, however t…
Remnant radio galaxies represent an important phase in the life-cycle of radio active galactic nuclei. It is suggested that in this phase, the jets have switched off and the extended emission is fading rapidly. This phase is not well-studied due to the lack of statistical samples observed at both low and high frequencies. In this work, we study a sample of 23 candidate remnant radio galaxies previously selected using the Low Frequency Array at 150 MHz in the Lockman Hole field. We examine their morphologies and study their spectral properties to confirm their remnant nature and revise the morp…
The remnant phase of a radio galaxy begins when the jets launched from an active galactic nucleus are switched off. To study the fraction of radio galaxies in a remnant phase, we take advantage of a $8.31$\,deg$^2$ sub-region of the GAMA~23~field which comprises of surveys covering the frequency range 0.1--9\,GHz. We present a sample of 104 radio galaxies compiled from observations conducted by the Murchison Wide-field Array (216\,MHz), the Australia Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (887\,MHz), and the Australia Telescope Compact Array (5.5\,GHz). We adopt an `absent radio core' criterion to …
The cessation of AGN activity in radio galaxies leads to a remnant phase during which jets are no longer sustained, but lobes can be detected for a period of time before they fade away due to radiative and dynamical energy losses. The time-scale of the remnant phase and AGN duty cycle are vital to understanding the evolution of radio galaxies. In this paper, we report new band-3 observations with the upgraded Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) for five remnant radio galaxies. Our uGMRT observations reveal emission of low-surface-brightness in all five remnants with 400 MHz surface brightn…
Quantifying the energetics and lifetimes of remnant radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is much more challenging than for active sources due to the added complexity of accurately determining the time since the central black hole switched off. Independent spectral modelling of remnant lobes enables the derivation of the remnant ratio, $R_\mathrm{rem}$, (i.e. `off-time/source age'), thus reducing this complexity back to that of active sources however, the requirement of high-frequency ($\gtrsim5\,$GHz) coverage makes the application of this technique over large-area radio surveys difficult.…
Remnant radio galaxies (RRGs), characterized by the cessation of AGN activity, represent a short-lived last phase of radio galaxy's life-cycle. Hitherto, searches for RRGs, mainly based on the morphological criteria, have identified large angular size sources resulting into a bias towards the remnants of powerful FR-II radio galaxies. In this study we make the first attempt to perform a systematic search for RRGs of small angular sizes ($<$30$^{\prime\prime}$) in the XMM-LSS field. By using spectral curvature criterion we discover 48 remnant candidates exhibiting strong spectral curvature ${\i…
The study on the dynamic evolution of young supernova remnants (SNRs) is an important way to understand the density structure of the progenitor's circumstellar medium. We have reported the acceleration or deceleration, proper motion and brightness changes of 260 compact radio features in the second youngest known SNR Cas A at 5\,GHz based on the VLA data of five epochs from 1987 to 2004. The radio expansion center locates at $α(1950)=23^{\rm h}21^{\rm m}9^{\rm s}_{\cdot}7 \pm 0^{\rm s}_{\cdot}29, δ(1950)=+58^{\circ}32^{\prime}25^{\prime\prime}_{\cdot}2 \pm 2^{\prime\prime}_{\cdot}2$. Three-qua…
The remnant phase of a radio galaxy is characterized by the cessation of AGN activity resulting in the stoppage of jets supplying plasma to radio lobes. In this paper, we present the search and characterization of remnant candidates in 12.5 deg$^{2}$ of the {\em XMM$-$Newton} Large$-$Scale Structure (XMM$-$LSS) field by using deep radio observations at 325 MHz from the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), at 150 MHz from the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR), at 1.4 GHz from the Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA), and at 3 GHz from the VLA Sky Survey (VLASS). By using both morphological criteria {\vi…

The relatively nearby spiral galaxy NGC~6946 is one of the most actively star forming galaxies in the local Universe. Ten supernovae (SNe) have been observed since 1917, and hence NGC6946 surely contains a large number of supernova remnants (SNRs). Here we report a new optical search for these SNRs using narrow-band images obtained with the WIYN telescope. We identify 147 emission nebulae as likely SNRs, based on elevated [SII]:Halpha ratios compared to HII regions. We have obtained spectra of 102 of these nebulae with Gemini North-GMOS; of these, 89 have [SII]:Halpha ratios greater than 0.4, …
We present full-polarisation, broadband observations of the radio galaxy NGC 612 (PKS B0131-637) from 1.3 to 3.1 GHz using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. The relatively large angular scale of the radio galaxy makes it a good candidate with which to investigate the polarisation mechanisms responsible for the observed Faraday depth structure. By fitting complex polarisation models to the polarised spectrum of each pixel, we find that a single polarisation component can adequately describe the observed signal for the majority of the radio galaxy. While we cannot definitively rule out inte…
Recent work has shown that the properties of multiple populations within massive stellar clusters (i.e., in the extent of their abundance variations as well as the fraction of stars that show the anomalous chemistry) depend on the mass as well as the age of the host cluster. Such correlations are largely unexpected in current models for the formation of multiple populations and hence provide essential insight into their origin. Here we extend or previous study into the presence or absence of multiple populations using integrated light spectroscopy of the $\sim600$~Myr, massive ($\sim10^7 - 10^…
Jets from active galactic nuclei (AGN) are known to recurrently enrich their surrounding medium with mildly-relativistic particles and magnetic fields. Here, we present a detailed multi-frequency analysis of the nearby (z=0.01646) galaxy group NGC 507. In particular, we present new high-sensitivity and high spatial resolution radio images in the frequency range 144-675 MHz obtained using LOFAR and uGMRT observations. These reveal the presence of previously undetected diffuse radio emission with complex, filamentary morphology, likely related to a previous outburst of the central galaxy. Based …
Sizes, Half-Mass Densities, and Mass Functions of Star Clusters in the Merger Remnant NGC 1316: Clues to the Fate of Second-Generation Globular Clusters
Feedback from radio jets associated with Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) plays a profound role in the evolution of galaxies. Kinetic power of these radio jets appears to show temporal variation, but the mechanism(s) responsible for this process are not yet clear. Recently, the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) has uncovered large populations of active, remnant and restarted radio jet populations. By focusing on LOFAR data in the Lockman Hole, in this work we use the Radio AGN in Semi-Analytic Environments (RAiSE) dynamical model to present the first self-consistent modelling analysis of active, remnant…
Only a small fraction of observed Active Galactic Nuclei display large-scale radio emission associated with jets, yet these radio-loud AGN have become increasingly important in models of galaxy evolution. In determining the dynamics and energetics of the radio sources over cosmic time, a key question concerns what happens when their jets switch off. The resulting `remnant' radio-loud AGN have been surprisingly evasive in past radio surveys, and therefore statistical information on the population of radio-loud AGN in their dying phase is limited. In this paper, with the recent developments of L…
We report the results of our investigation on the possible existence of supernova remnants (SNRs) in the nearby galaxy, NGC 1569, using the CCD imaging and spectroscopic observations from the RTT150 telescope of TUG-TUBITAK in Antalya, Turkey for two different observing periods. Using [S\,{\sc ii}]/H$α$ $\geq$ 0.4 standard criteria, the identification of 13 new SNR candidates for this galaxy is proposed for two different epochs. We found the [S\,{\sc ii}]/H$α$ ratios ranging from 0.46--0.84 and H$α$ intensities ranging from (2.2--32) $\times$ 10$^{-15}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. [S\,{\sc ii}]$λλ…
We present metallicities for red giant stars in the globular cluster NGC 6273 based on intermediate resolution GMOS-S spectra of the calcium triplet region. For the 42 radial velocity members with reliable calcium triplet line strength measurements, we obtain metallicities, [Fe/H], using calibrations established from standard globular clusters. We confirm the presence of an intrinsic abundance dispersion identified by Johnson et al. (2015). The total range in [Fe/H] is ~1.0 dex and after taking into account the measurement errors, the intrinsic abundance dispersion is σ[Fe/H] = 0.17 dex. Among…
In this paper we present the updated empirical radio surface-brightness-to-diameter ($Σ$--$D$) relation for Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) calibrated using $110$ SNRs with reliable distances. We apply orthogonal fitting procedure and kernel density smoothing in $Σ-D$ plane and compare the results with the latest theoretical $Σ-D$ relations derived from simulations of radio evolution of SNRs. We argue that the best agreement between the empirical and simulated $Σ-D$ relations is achieved if the mixed-morphology SNRs and SNRs of both, low brightness and small diameter, are filtered out from …
Wide-field Halpha images of the radio faint Galactic supernova remnant G182.4+4.2 reveal a surprisingly extensive and complex emission structure, with an unusual series of broad and diffuse filaments along the remnant's southwestern limb. Deep [O III] 5007 images reveal no appreciable remnant emission with the exception of a single filament coincident with the westernmost of the broad southwest filaments. The near total absence of [O III] emission suggests the majority of the remnant's optical emission arises from relatively slow shocks (<70 km/s), consistent with little or no associated X-ray…
A measurable fraction ($\sim8$ per cent) of recently discovered arcmin-size circular diffuse radio sources termed as Odd Radio Circles or ORCs can be supernovae remnants in the intragroup medium, within the local group and its immediate neighbour groups of galaxies. This estimate is based on the optical detection rate of the intragroup supernovae events in the nearby ($z \sim 0.1-0.2$) galaxy groups. A rate of about 5400 intragroup supernovae per million year is expected within the local and its immediate neighbour groups of galaxies. For a radio detectability period of about $10^{4}$ years, o…
