We consider motion in spherically symmetric but time-dependent backgrounds. This problem is of interest, for example, in the context of ultralight dark matter, where galactic haloes produce a time-dependent and periodic gravitational potential. We study the properties of motion of stars in such spacetimes, for different field strengths and frequency, and including dissipative effects. We show that orbital resonances may occur and that spectroscopic emission lines from stars in these geometries exhibit characteristic, periodic modulation patterns. In addition, we work out a fully relativistic and weak-field description of a special class of time-periodic geometries, that of scalar oscillatons. When applied to the galactic center, our results indicate that the motion of S2-like stars may carry distinguishable observational imprints of ultra-light dark matter.

We study the ultralight vector dark matter with a mass around $10^{-23}\,\mathrm{eV}$. The vector field oscillating coherently on galactic scales induces oscillations of the spacetime metric with a frequency around nHz, which is detectable by pulsar timing arrays. We find that the pulsar timing signal due to the vector dark matter has nontrivial angular dependence unlike the scalar dark matter and the maximal amplitude is three times larger than that of the scalar dark matter.
We study binary mergers of ultralight bosonic dark matter cores by solving the Gross-Pitaevskii-Poisson system of equations. The analysis centers on the dynamics of the relaxation process and the behavior of the configuration resulting from the merger, including the Gravitational Cooling with its corresponding emission of mass and angular momentum. The oscillations of density and size of the final configuration are characterized, indicating that for the equal mass case the dependency of the amplitude and frequency of these oscillations on the impact parameter of the pre-merger configuration is…
It is well known that N-body simulations of ultralight bosons show the formation of a solitonic dark matter core in the innermost part of the halo. The scale length of such a soliton depends on the inverse of the mass of the boson. On the other hand, the orbital motion of stars in the Galactic Center depends on the distribution of matter whether be it baryonic or dark, providing an excellent probe for the gravitational field of the region. In this Letter we propose the S-stars in the Galactic Center as a new observational tool, complementary to other astrophysical systems, to narrow down the r…
We assume dark matter to be a cosmological self-gravitating Bose-Einstein condensate of non-relativistic ultralight scalar particles with competing gravitational and repulsive contact interactions and investigate the observational implications of such model. The system is unstable to the formation of stationary self-bound structures that minimize the energy functional. These cosmological superfluid droplets, which are the smallest possible gravitationally bound dark matter structures, exhibit a universal mass profile and a corresponding universal rotation curve. Assuming a hierarchical structu…

We performed a Bayesian analysis of pulsar timing residuals from the NANOGrav pulsar timing array to search for a specific form of stochastic narrow-band signal produced by oscillating gravitational potential in the Galactic halo. Such oscillations arise in models of warm dark matter composed of an ultralight massive scalar field (m\sim 10^{-23} eV), recently considered by Khmelnitsky and Rubakov (2014). In the monochromatic approximation, the stringent upper limit (95% c.l.) on the variable gravitational potential amplitude is found to be Psi_c<1.14 10^{-15}, corresponding to the characterist…
Scalar fields can give rise to confined structures, such as boson stars or Q-balls. These objects are interesting hypothetical new "dark matter stars," but also good descriptions of dark matter haloes when the fields are ultralight. Here, we study the dynamical response of such confined bosonic structures when excited by external matter (stars, planets or black holes) in their vicinities. Such perturbers can either be plunging through the bosonic configuration or simply act as periodic sources. Our setup can also efficiently describe the interaction between a massive black hole and the surroun…
We investigate the caustic topologies for binary gravitational lenses made up of two objects whose gravitational potential declines as $1/r^n$. With $n<1$ this corresponds to power-law dust distributions like the singular isothermal sphere. The $n>1$ regime can be obtained with some violations of the energy conditions, one famous example being the Ellis wormhole. Gravitational lensing provides a natural arena to distinguish and identify such exotic objects in our Universe. We find that there are still three topologies for caustics as in the standard Schwarzschild binary lens, with the main nov…

It is widely accepted that dark matter contributes about a quarter of the critical mass-energy density in our Universe. The nature of dark matter is currently unknown, with the mass of possible constituents spanning nearly one hundred orders of magnitude. The ultralight scalar field dark matter, consisting of extremely light bosons with $m \sim 10^{-22}$ eV and often called "fuzzy" dark matter, provides intriguing solutions to some challenges at sub-Galactic scales for the standard cold dark matter model. As shown by Khmelnitsky and Rubakov, such a scalar field in the Galaxy would produce an o…
We derive the halo mass function (HMF) for fuzzy dark matter (FDM) by solving the excursion set problem explicitly with a mass-dependent barrier function, which has not been done before. We find that compared to the naive approach of the Sheth--Tormen HMF for FDM, our approach has a higher cut off mass and the cut off mass changes less strongly with redshifts. Using merger trees constructed with a modified version of the Lacey & Cole formalism that accounts for suppressed small scale power and the scale-dependent growth of FDM haloes and the semi-analytic GALACTICUS code, we study the statisti…

We discuss the thermal evolution and Bose-Einstein condensation of ultra-light dark matter particles at finite, realistic cosmological temperatures. We find that if these particles decouple from regular matter before Standard model particles annihilate, their temperature will be about 0.9 K. This temperature is substantially lower than the temperature of CMB neutrinos and thus Big Bang Nucleosynthesis remains unaffected. In addition the temperature is consistent with WMAP 7-year+BAO+H0 observations without fine-tuning. We focus on particles of mass of $m\sim 10^{-23}$ eV, which have Compton wa…
Ultralight bosonic dark matter is expected to be able to form a cloud surrounding the supermassive black hole (SMBH) in the Galactic center. With increasing precision of the observations of the stellar kinematics around the SMBH, tiny effects from such a dark matter cloud, including its gravitational perturbation and the direct coupling with the ordinary matter may be detectable. In this work, we search for possible evidence of the scalar cloud using accurate orbital measurements of the S2 star around Sgr~A*. We solve the first order Post-Newtonian equation, considering simultaneously the exte…
In the present work, the Brans-Dicke (BD) theory of gravity is taken as a possible theory of k-essence. Then starting with the (already known) Brans-Dicke-Schwarzschild solution which can represent the gravitationally bound static configurations of the BD scalar k-essence, issues like whether these configurations can reproduce the observed properties of galactic dark matter haloes have been addressed. It has been realized that indeed the BD scalar k-essence can cluster into dark matter halo-like objects with flattened rotation curves while exhibiting a dark energy-like negative pressure on lar…

We present the dynamics of rotating Bose Condensate galactic dark matter halos, made of an ultralight spinless boson. We restrict to the case of adding axisymmetric rigid rotation to initially spherically symmetric structures and show there are three regimes: i) small angular momentum, that basically retains the drawbacks of spherically symmetric halos related to compactness and failure at explaining galactic RCs, ii) an intermediate range of values of angular momentum that allow the existence of long-lived structures with acceptable RC profiles, and iii) high angular momentum, in which the st…
We present here results from the first-ever search for dark photon dark matter that could have coupled to baryons in LISA Pathfinder, the technology demonstrator for a space-based gravitational-wave antenna. After analyzing approximately three months of data taken by LISA Pathfinder in the frequency range $[2\times 10^{-5},5]$ Hz, corresponding to dark photon masses of $[8\times 10^{-20},2\times 10^{-14}]$ eV/$c^2$, we find no evidence of a dark-matter signal, and set upper limits on the strength of the dark photon/baryon coupling. To perform this search, we leveraged methods that search for q…
Dark matter (DM) can consist of very light bosons behaving as a classical scalar field that experiences coherent oscillations. The presence of this DM field would perturb the dynamics of celestial bodies, either because the (oscillating) DM stress tensor modifies the gravitational potentials of the galaxy, or if DM is directly coupled to the constituents of the body. We study secular variations of the orbital parameters of binary systems induced by such perturbations. Two classes of effects are identified. Effects of the first class appear if the frequency of DM oscillations is in resonance wi…
