We report the discovery of EPIC 201498078b, which was first identified as a planetary candidate from Kepler K2 photometry of Campaign 14, and whose planetary nature and orbital parameters were then confirmed with precision radial velocities. EPIC 201498078b is half as massive as Saturn ($\rm M_P$=$0.179 \pm 0.021$ $\rm M_J$), and has a radius of $\rm R_P$=$0.840 \pm 0.011$ $\rm R_J$, which translates into a bulk density of $ \rm ρ_P$=$0.37 \pm 0.05$ g cm$^{-3}$. EPIC 201498078b transits its slightly evolved G-type host star ($\rm M_{\star}$=$1.105 \pm 0.019$ $\rm M_{\odot}$, $\rm R_P$=$1.669 \pm 0.022$ $\rm R_{\odot}$) every $11.63364 \pm 0.00010$ days and presents a significantly eccentric orbit ($e=0.420 \pm 0.034$). We estimate a relatively short circularization timescale of 1.8 Gyr for the planet, but given the advanced age of the system we expect the planet to be engulfed by its evolving host star in $\sim 1$ Gyr before the orbit circularizes. The low density of the planet coupled to the brightness of the host star ($J=9.4$) makes this system one of the best candidates known to date in the super-Neptune regime for atmospheric characterization via transmission spectroscopy, and to further study the transition region between ice and gas giant planets.
Most Neptune-mass planets in close-in orbits (orbital periods less than a few days) present nonzero eccentricity, typically around 0.15. This is somehow unexpected, as these planets undergo strong tidal dissipation that should circularize their orbits in a time-scale shorter than the age of the system. In this paper we discuss some mechanisms that can oppose to bodily tides, namely, thermal atmospheric tides, evaporation of the atmosphere, and excitation from a distant companion. In the first two cases, the eccentricity can increase consistently, while in the last one, the eccentricity can onl…
We report the discovery of EPIC247098361b using photometric data of the Kepler K2 satellite coupled with ground-based spectroscopic observations. EPIC247098361b has a mass of M$_{P}=0.397\pm 0.037$ M$_J$, a radius of R$_{P}=1.00 \pm 0.020$ R$_J$, and a moderately low equilibrium temperature of $T_{eq}=1030 \pm 15$ K due to its relatively large star-planet separation of $a=0.1036$ AU. EPIC247098361b orbits its bright ($V=9.9$) late F-type host star in an eccentric orbit ($e=0.258 \pm 0.025$) every 11.2 days, and is one of only four well characterized warm Jupiters having hosts stars brighter th…
We explore planetary migration scenarios for formation of high inclination Neptune Trojans (NTs) and how they are affected by the planetary migration of Neptune and Uranus. If Neptune and Uranus's eccentricity and inclination were damped during planetary migration, then their eccentricities and inclinations were higher prior and during migration than their current values. Using test particle integrations we study the stability of primordial NTs, objects that were initially Trojans with Neptune prior to migration. We also study Trans-Neptunian objects captured into resonance with Neptune and be…
The Great Dark Spot (GDS-89) observed by Voyager 2 was the first of several large-scale vortices observed on Neptune, the most recent of which was observed in 2018 in the northern hemisphere (NDS-2018). Ongoing observations of these features are constraining cloud formation, drift, shape oscillations, and other dynamic properties. In order to effectively model these characteristics, an explicit calculation of methane cloud microphysics is needed. Using an updated version of the Explicit Planetary Isentropic Coordinate General Circulation Model (EPIC GCM) and its active cloud microphysics modul…
The Kepler extended mission, also known as K2, has provided the community with a wealth of planetary candidates that orbit stars typically much brighter than the targets of the original mission. These planet candidates are suitable for further spectroscopic follow-up and precise mass determinations, leading ultimately to the construction of empirical mass-radius diagrams. Particularly interesting is to constrain the properties of planets between the Earth and Neptune in size, the most abundant type of planets orbiting Sun-like stars with periods less than a few years. Among many other K2 candi…
Neptune's dynamical history shaped the current orbits of Kuiper belt objects (KBOs), leaving clues to the planet's orbital evolution. In the "classical" region, a population of dynamically "hot" high-inclination KBOs overlies a flat "cold" population with distinct physical properties. Simulations of qualitatively different histories for Neptune -including smooth migration on a circular orbit or scattering by other planets to a high eccentricity - have not simultaneously produced both populations. We explore a general Kuiper belt assembly model that forms hot classical KBOs interior to Neptune …
The link between the dynamical evolution of the giant planets and the Kuiper Belt orbital structure can provide clues and insight about the dynamical history of the Solar System. The classical region of the Kuiper Belt has two populations (the cold and hot populations) with completely different physical and dynamical properties. These properties have been explained in the framework of a subset of the simulations of the Nice Model, in which Neptune remained on a low-eccentricity orbit (Neptune's eccentricity is never larger than 0.1) throughout the giant planet instability. However, recent simu…
We report on Doppler observations of three transiting planet candidates that were detected during Campaign 1 of the K2 mission. The Doppler observations were conducted with FIES, HARPS-N and HARPS. We measure the mass of K2-27b (EPIC 201546283b), and provide constraints and upper limits for EPIC 201295312b and EPIC 201577035b. K2-27b is a warm Neptune orbiting its host star in 6.77 days and has a radius of $4.45^{+0.33}_{-0.33}~\mathrm{R_\oplus}$ and a mass of $29.1^{+7.5}_{-7.4}~\mathrm{M_\oplus}$, which leads to a mean density of $1.80^{+0.70}_{-0.55}~\mathrm{g~cm^{-3}}$. EPIC 201295312b is …
The dynamical structure of the Kuiper belt can be used as a clue to the formation and evolution of the Solar System, planetary systems in general, and Neptune's early orbital history in particular. The problem is best addressed by forward modeling where different initial conditions and Neptune's orbital evolutions are tested, and the model predictions are compared to orbits of known Kuiper belt objects (KBOs). It has previously been established that Neptune radially migrated, by gravitationally interacting with an outer disk of planetesimals, from the original radial distance r < 25 au to its …
The current dynamical structure of the Kuiper belt was shaped by the orbital evolution of the giant planets, especially Neptune, during the era following planet formation, when the giant planets may have undergone planet-planet scattering and/or planetesimal-driven migration. Numerical simulations of this process, while reproducing many properties of the belt, fail to generate the high inclinations and eccentricities observed for some objects while maintaining the observed dynamically "cold" population. We present the first of a three-part parameter study of how different dynamical histories o…
We confirm the Kepler planet candidate Kepler-410b (KOI-42b) as a Neptune sized exoplanet on a 17.8 day, eccentric orbit around the bright (Kp = 9.4) star Kepler-410A. This is the third brightest confirmed planet host star in the Kepler field and one of the brightest hosts of all currently known transiting exoplanets. Kepler-410 consists of a blend between the fast rotating planet host star (Kepler-410A) and a fainter star (Kepler-410B), which has complicated the confirmation of the planetary candidate. Employing asteroseismology, using constraints from the transit light curve, adaptive optics…
Transiting planets in nearby young clusters offer the opportunity to study the atmospheres and dynamics of planets during their formative years. To this end, we focused on K2-25b -- a close-in ($P$=3.48 days), Neptune-sized exoplanet orbiting a M4.5 dwarf in the 650Myr Hyades cluster. We combined photometric observations of K2-25 covering a total of 44 transits and spanning >2 yr, drawn from a mix of space-based telescopes (Spitzer Space Telescope and K2) and ground-based facilities (Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope network and MEarth). The transit photometry spanned 0.6--4.5$μ$m, whic…
The quest to discover exoplanets is one of the most important missions in astrophysics, and is widely performed using the transit method, which allows for the detection of exoplanets down to the size of Mercury. However, to confirm these detections, additional vetting is mandatory. We selected six K2 targets from campaigns #1 to #8 that show transit light curves corresponding to Earth-sized to Neptune-sized exoplanets. We aim to discard some scenarios that could mimic an exoplanetary transit, leading to a misinterpretation of the data. We performed direct imaging observations using the SPHERE/…
The present-day orbit distribution of the Neptune Trojans is a powerful probe of the dynamical environment of the outer solar system during the late stages of planet migration. In this work, I conservatively debias the inclination, eccentricity, and libration amplitude distributions of the Neptune Trojans by reducing a priori unknown discovery and follow-up survey properties to nuisance parameters and using a likelihood-free Bayesian rejection sampler for parameter estimation. Using this survey-agnostic approach, I confirm that the Neptune Trojans are a dynamically excited population: at $>$95…

We report the discovery of an eccentric hot Neptune and a non-transiting outer planet around TOI-1272. We identified the eccentricity of the inner planet, with an orbital period of 3.3 d and $R_{\rm p,b} = 4.1 \pm 0.2$ $R_\oplus$, based on a mismatch between the observed transit duration and the expected duration for a circular orbit. Using ground-based radial velocity measurements from the HIRES instrument at the Keck Observatory, we measured the mass of TOI-1272b to be $M_{\rm p,b} = 25 \pm 2$ $M_\oplus$. We also confirmed a high eccentricity of $e_b = 0.34 \pm 0.06$, placing TOI-1272b among…
In a previous paper, we have presented a global view of the stability of Neptune Trojan (NT hereafter) on inclined orbit. We discuss in this paper the dependence of stability of NT orbits on the eccentricity. High-resolution dynamical maps are constructed using the results of extensive numerical integrations of orbits initialized on the fine grids of initial semimajor axis (a0) versus eccentricity (e0). The extensions of regions of stable orbits on the (a0, e0) plane at different inclinations are shown. The maximum eccentricities of stable orbits in three most stable regions at low (0, 12deg.)…
We report the discovery of a new planetary system with three transiting planets, one super-Earth and two sub-Neptunes, that orbit EPIC\,249893012, a G8\,IV-V evolved star ($M_\star$\,=\,1.05\,$\pm$\,0.05\,$M_\odot$, $R_\star$\,=\,1.71\,$\pm$\,0.04\,$R_\odot$, $T_\mathrm{eff}$\,=5430\,$\pm$\,85\,K). The star is just leaving the main sequence. We combined \ktwo \ photometry with IRCS adaptive-optics imaging and HARPS, HARPS-N, and CARMENES high-precision radial velocity measurements to confirm the planetary system, determine the stellar parameters, and measure radii, masses, and densities of the…
We report the discovery of HIP-97166b (TOI-1255b), a transiting sub-Neptune on a 10.3-day orbit around a K0 dwarf 68 pc from Earth. This planet was identified in a systematic search of TESS Objects of Interest for planets with eccentric orbits, based on a mismatch between the observed transit duration and the expected duration for a circular orbit. We confirmed the planetary nature of HIP-97166b with ground-based radial velocity measurements and measured a mass of $M_{b} =$ 20 $\pm$ 2 $M_\bigoplus$ along with a radius of $R_{b} =$ 2.7 $\pm$ 0.1 $R_\bigoplus$ from photometry. We detected an add…
We present the discovery of EPIC 228735255b, a P= 6.57 days Jupiter-mass (M$_P$=1.019$\pm$0.070 M$_{Jup}$) planet transiting a V=12.5 (G5-spectral type) star in an eccentric orbit (e=$0.120^{+0.056}_{-0.046}$) detected using a combination of K2 photometry and ground-based observations. With a radius of 1.095$\pm$0.018R$_{Jup}$ the planet has a bulk density of 0.726$\pm$0.062$ρ_{Jup}$. The host star has a [Fe/H] of 0.12$\pm$0.045, and from the K2 light curve we find a rotation period for the star of 16.3$\pm$0.1 days. This discovery is the 9th hot Jupiter from K2 and highlights K2's ability to …

GJ436b is a unique member of the transiting extrasolar planet population being one of the smallest and least irradiated and possessing an eccentric orbit. Because of its size, mass and density, GJ436b could plausibly have an atmospheric metallicity similar to Neptune (20-60 times solar abundances), which makes it an ideal target to study the effects of atmospheric metallicity on dynamics and radiative transfer in an extrasolar planetary atmosphere. We present three-dimensional atmospheric circulation models that include realistic non-gray radiative transfer for 1, 3, 10, 30, and 50 times solar…
We present the confirmation of a new sub-Neptune close to the transition between super-Earths and sub-Neptunes transiting the M2 dwarf TOI- 269 (TIC 220479565, V = 14.4 mag, J = 10.9 mag, Rstar = 0.40 Rsun, Mstar = 0.39 Msun, d = 57 pc). The exoplanet candidate has been identified in multiple TESS sectors, and validated with high-precision spectroscopy from HARPS and ground-based photometric follow-up from ExTrA and LCO-CTIO. We determined mass, radius, and bulk density of the exoplanet by jointly modeling both photometry and radial velocities with juliet. The transiting exoplanet has an orbit…
We report on the confirmation that the candidate transits observed for the star EPIC 211525389 are due to a short-period Neptune-sized planet. The host star, located in K2 campaign field 5, is a metal-rich ([Fe/H] = 0.26$\pm$0.05) G-dwarf (T_eff = 5430$\pm$70 K and log g = 4.48$\pm$0.09), based on observations with the High Dispersion Spectrograph (HDS) on the Subaru 8.2m telescope. High-spatial resolution AO imaging with HiCIAO on the Subaru telescope excludes faint companions near the host star, and the false positive probability of this target is found to be <$10^{-6}$ using the open source…
TOI-216 hosts a pair of warm, large exoplanets discovered by the TESS Mission. These planets were found to be in or near the 2:1 resonance, and both of them exhibit transit timing variations (TTVs). Precise characterization of the planets' masses and radii, orbital properties, and resonant behavior can test theories for the origins of planets orbiting close to their stars. Previous characterization of the system using the first six sectors of TESS data suffered from a degeneracy between planet mass and orbital eccentricity. Radial velocity measurements using HARPS, FEROS, and PFS break that de…

Although the majority of radial velocity detected planets have been found orbiting solar-type stars, a fraction of them have been discovered around giant stars. These planetary systems have revealed different orbital properties when compared to solar-type stars companions. In particular, radial velocity surveys have shown that there is a lack of giant planets in close-in orbits around giant stars, in contrast to the known population of hot-Jupiters orbiting solar-type stars. The reason of this distinctive feature in the semimajor-axis distribution has been theorized to be the result of the ste…
We report the detection of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect for the eccentric, super-Neptune exoplanet HAT-P-11b, based on radial velocity measurements taken with HDS mounted on the Subaru 8.2m telescope, and simultaneous photometry with the FTN 2.0m telescope, both located in Hawai'i. The observed radial velocities during a planetary transit of HAT-P-11b show a persistent blue-shift, suggesting a spin-orbit misalignment in the system. The best-fit value for the projected spin-orbit misalignment angle is $λ= 103_{-19}^{+23}$ deg. Our result supports the notion that eccentric exoplanetary systems…
We have been conducting a survey for distant solar system objects beyond the Kuiper Belt edge (~50 AU) with new wide-field cameras on the Subaru 8 meter and CTIO 4 meter telescopes. We are interested in the orbits of objects that are decoupled from the giant planet region in order to understand the structure of the outer solar system, including whether a massive planet exists beyond a few hundred AU as first reported by Trujillo and Sheppard (2014). In addition to discovering extreme trans-Neptunian objects detailed elsewhere, we have found several objects with high perihelia (q>40 AU) that di…
With the growth of comparative exoplanetology, it is increasingly clear that investigating the relationships between inner and outer planets plays a key role in discriminating between competing formation and evolution models. To do so, it is important to probe the inner region of systems hosting long-period giants in search for undetected lower-mass planetary companions. In this work we present our results on the K-dwarf star BD-11~4672, already known to host a long-period giant planet, as the first output of a subsample of the GAPS programme specifically aimed at assessing the impact of ineff…
We report the discovery of K2-98 b (EPIC 211391664 b), a transiting Neptune-sized planet monitored by the K2 mission during its campaign 5. We combine the K2 time-series data with ground-based photometric and spectroscopic follow-up observations to confirm the planetary nature of the object and derive its mass, radius, and orbital parameters. K2-98 b is a warm Neptune-like planet in a 10-day orbit around a V=12.2~mag F-type star with $M_\star$=$ 1.074\pm0.042$, $R_\star$=$ 1.311 ^{+ 0.083} _{ - 0.048} $, and age of $5.2_{-1.0}^{+1.2}$~Gyr. We derive a planetary mass and radius of $M_\mathrm{p}…
The angle between the spin of a star and its planets' orbital planes traces the history of the planetary system. Exoplanets orbiting close to cool stars are expected to be on circular, aligned orbits because of strong tidal interactions with the stellar convective envelope. Spin-orbit alignment can be measured when the planet transits its star, but such ground-based spectroscopic measurements are challenging for cool, slowly-rotating stars. Here we report the characterization of a planet three-dimensional trajectory around an M dwarf star, derived by mapping the spectrum of the stellar photosp…
The Neptunian satellite system is unusual, comprising Triton, a large ($\sim2700$ km) moon on a close-in, circular, yet retrograde orbit, flanked by Nereid, the largest irregular satellite ($\sim$300 km) on a highly eccentric orbit. Capture origins have been previously suggested for both moons. Here we explore an alternative in-situ formation model where the two satellites accreted in the circum-Neptunian disk and are imparted irregular and eccentric orbits by a deep planetary encounter with an ice giant (IG), like that predicted in the Nice scenario of early solar system development. We use $…
We present the results of detailed dynamical simulations of the effect of the migration of the four giant planets on both the transport of pre-formed Neptune Trojans, and the capture of new Trojans from a trans-Neptunian disk. We find that scenarios involving the slow migration of Neptune over a large distance (50Myr to migrate from 18.1AU to its current location) provide the best match to the properties of the known Trojans. Scenarios with faster migration (5Myr), and those in which Neptune migrates from 23.1AU to its current location, fail to adequately reproduce the current day Trojan popul…
We combine multiple campaigns of K2 photometry with precision radial velocity measurements from Keck-HIRES to measure the masses of three sub-Neptune-size planets. We confirm the planetary nature of the massive sub-Neptune K2-182 b ($P_\mathrm{b}= 4.7$ days, $R_\mathrm{b} = 2.69$ $R_\oplus$) and derive refined parameters for K2-199 b and c ($P_\mathrm{b} = 3.2$ days, $R_\mathrm{b} = 1.73$ $R_\oplus$, and $P_\mathrm{c} = 7.4$ days, $R_\mathrm{c} = 2.85$ $R_\oplus$). These planets provide valuable data points in the mass-radius plane, especially as TESS continues to reveal an increasingly divers…
In about 6 Giga years our Sun will evolve into a red giant and finally end its life as a white dwarf. This stellar metamorphosis will occur to virtually all known host stars of exo-planetary systems and is therefore crucial for their final fate. It is clear that the innermost planets will be engulfed and evaporated during the giant phase and that planets located farther out will survive. However, the destiny of planets in-between, at ~ 1 - 10 au, has not yet been investigated with a multi-planet tidal treatment. We here combine for the first time multi-planet interactions, stellar evolution, a…
Thanks to the relative ease of finding and characterizing small planets around M dwarf stars, these objects have become cornerstones in the field of exoplanet studies. The current paucity of planets in long-period orbits around M dwarfs make such objects particularly compelling as they provide clues about the formation and evolution of these systems. In this study, we present the discovery of TOI-2257 b (TIC 198485881), a long-period (35 d) sub-Neptune orbiting an M3 star at 57.8pc. Its transit depth is about 0.4%, large enough to be detected with medium-size, ground-based telescopes. The long…
The New Generation Planetary Population Synthesis (NGPPS) VIII. Impact of host star metallicity on planet occurrence rates, orbital periods, eccentricities, and radius valley morphology
We report the discovery of two transiting planets around the bright ($V=9.9$ mag) main sequence F7 star TOI-1670 by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite. TOI-1670 b is a sub-Neptune ($R_\mathrm{b} = 2.06_{-0.15}^{+0.19}$ $R_\oplus$) on a 10.9-day orbit and TOI-1670 c is a warm Jupiter ($R_\mathrm{c} = 0.987_{-0.025}^{+0.025}$ $R_\mathrm{Jup}$) on a 40.7-day orbit. Using radial velocity observations gathered with the Tull coudé Spectrograph on the Harlan J. Smith telescope and HARPS-N on the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, we find a planet mass of $M_\mathrm{c} = 0.63_{-0.08}^{+0.09}$ $M_\ma…
Spectroscopic observations are reported for the 2.75 day, double-lined, detached eclipsing binary EPIC 219552514 located at the turnoff of the old nearby open cluster Ruprecht 147. A joint analysis of our radial velocity measurements and the K2 light curve leads to masses of M1 = 1.509 (+0.063 / -0.056) MSun and M2 = 0.649 (+0.015 / -0.014) MSun for the primary and secondary, along with radii of R1 = 2.505 (+0.026 / -0.031) RSun and R2 = 0.652 (+0.013 / -0.012) RSun, respectively. The effective temperatures are 6180 +/- 100 K for the F7 primary and 4010 +/- 170 K for the late K secondary. The …
Three planets with minimum masses less than 10 Earth masses orbit the star HD 40307, suggesting these planets may be rocky. However, with only radial velocity data, it is impossible to determine if these planets are rocky or gaseous. Here we exploit various dynamical features of the system in order to assess the physical properties of the planets. Observations allow for circular orbits, but a numerical integration shows that the eccentricities must be at least 0.0001. Also, planets b and c are so close to the star that tidal effects are significant. If planet b has tidal parameters similar to …
The stability of Trojan type orbits around Neptune is studied. As the first part of our investigation, we present in this paper a global view of the stability of Trojans on inclined orbits. Using the frequency analysis method based on the FFT technique, we construct high resolution dynamical maps on the plane of initial semimajor axis $a_0$ versus inclination $i_0$. These maps show three most stable regions, with $i_0$ in the range of $(0^\circ,12^\circ), (22^\circ,36^\circ)$ and $(51^\circ,59^\circ)$ respectively, where the Trojans are most probably expected to be found. The similarity betwee…
We report the detection of three new extrasolar planets orbiting the solar type stars HD 85390, HD 90156 and HD 103197 with the HARPS spectrograph mounted on the ESO 3.6-m telescope at La Silla observatory. HD 85390 has a planetary companion with a projected intermediate mass (42.0 Earth masses) on a 788-day orbit (a=1.52 AU) with an eccentricity of 0.41, for which there is no analogue in the solar system. A drift in the data indicates the presence of another companion on a long period orbit, which is however not covered by our measurements. HD 90156 is orbited by a warm Neptune analogue with …
The ring system and small satellites of Neptune were discovered during Voyager 2 flyby in 1989 (Smith et al.1989). In this work we analyse the diffusion maps which can give an overview of the system. As a result we found the width of unstable and stable regions close to each satellite. The innermost Galle ring, which is further from the satellites, is located in a stable region, while Lassel ring (W = 4000 km) has its inner border in a stable region depending on its eccentricity. The same happens to the Le Verrier and Adams rings , they are stable for small values of the eccentricity. They can…
We present the detection of a Warm Neptune orbiting the M-dwarf Gl378, using radial velocity measurements obtained with the SOPHIE spectrograph at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence. The star was observed in the context of the SOPHIE exoplanets consortium's subprogramme dedicated to finding planets around M-dwarfs. Gl378 is an M1 star, of solar metallicity, at a distance of 14.96 pc. The single planet detected, Gl378 b, has a minimum mass of 13.02 $\rm M_{Earth}$ and an orbital period of 3.82 days, which place it at the lower boundary of the Hot Neptune desert. As one of only a few such planet…
