The betatron tune, which is defined as the number of transverse oscillations in one turn of a ring accelerator, is one of the most important parameters. An undesired betatron tune increases the amplitude of the transverse oscillation so that many particles are lost from the ring sooner than designed. Since a betatron tune is controlled by the magnetic fields in the ring, the ripple of the magnet current directly displaces the betatron tune from its designated value. We have developed a system that corrects the betatron tune displacement using the measured magnet current at the J-PARC (Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex) Main Ring. We adopted Field Programmable Gated Arrays (FPGA) to convert from the measured magnet current to the betatron tune in real time. Using the system, we have decreased the fluctuation of the betatron tune from 5.2e-4 to 3.3e-4 at the frequencies less than 250 Hz.
The measurement of the betatron tunes in a circular accelerator is of paramount importance due to their impact on beam dynamics. The resolution of the these measurements, when using turn by turn (TbT) data from beam position monitors (BPMs), is greatly limited by the available number of turns in the signal. Due to decoherence from finite chromaticity and/or amplitude detuning, the transverse betatron oscillations appear to be damped in the TbT signal. On the other hand, an adequate number of samples is needed, if precise and accurate tune measurements are desired. In this paper, a method is pr…
Indus-2 is a synchrotron radiation source which is operational at RRCAT, Indore; India. It is essentially pertinent in any synchrotron radiation facility to store the electron beam without beam loss. During the day to day operation of Indus-2 storage ring difficulty was being faced in accumulating higher beam current. After examining, it was found that the working point was shifting from its desired value during accumulation. For smooth beam accumulation, a fixed desired tune in both horizontal and vertical plane plays a great role in avoiding the beam loss via resonance process. This demanded…
We report on extensive measurements at the Cornell Electron-positron Storage Ring of electron-cloud-induced betatron tune shifts for trains of positron bunches at 2.1 and 5.3 GeV with bunch populations ranging between 0.64x10^10 and 9.6x10^10. Measurements using a witness bunch with variable distance from the end of the train and variable bunch population provide information on cloud decay and cloud pinching during the bunch passage. We employ Monte Carlo simulations of the reflection and absorption of synchrotron radiation photons to determine the pattern of absorption sites around the circum…
Tune identification - i.e. attribution of the spectral peak to a particular normal mode of oscillations - can present a significant difficulty in the presence of strong transverse coupling when the normal mode with a lower damping rate dominates spectra of Turn-by-Turn oscillations in both planes. The introduced earlier phased sum algorithm helped to recover the weaker normal mode signal from the noise, but by itself proved to be insufficient for automatic peak identification in the case of close phase advance distribution in both planes. To resolve this difficulty we modified the algorithm by…

In this paper we demonstrate that cyclotrons can be made to have precisely constant betatron tunes over wide energy ranges. In particular, we show that the horizontal tune can be made constant and does not have to follow the Lorentz factor gamma, while still perfectly satisfying the isochronous condition. To make this demonstration we developed a technique based on the calculation of the betatron tunes entirely from the geometry of realistic non-hard-edge closed orbits. We present two particular cyclotron designs, one compact cyclotron and one ring cyclotron. The compact cyclotron design is ba…
Precise measurement of betatron tune is required for good operating condition of CSNS RCS. The fractional part of betatron tune is important and it can be measured by analyzing the signals of beam position from the appointed BPM. Usually these signals are contaminated during the acquisition process, therefore several power spectrum methods are used to improve the frequency resolution. In this article classical and modern power spectrum methods are used. In order to compare their performance, the results of simulation data and IQT data from J-PARC RCS are discussed. It is shown that modern powe…
We analyze the stop-band due to crab cavities for horizontal tunes that are either close to integers or close to half integers. The latter case is relevant for today's electron/positron colliders. We compare this stop-band to that created by dispersion in an accelerating cavity and show that a single typical crab cavity creates larger stop-bands than a typical dispersion at an accelerating cavity. We furthermore analyze whether it is beneficial to place the crab cavity at a position where the dispersion and its slope vanish. We find that this choice is worth while if the horizontal tune is clo…
We present an in-depth analysis of the concept of spin precession frequency for integrable orbital motion in storage rings. Spin motion on the periodic closed orbit of a storage ring can be analyzed in terms of the Floquet theorem for equations of motion with periodic parameters and a spin precession frequency emerges in a Floquet exponent as an additional frequency of the system. To define a spin precession frequency on nonperiodic synchro-betatron orbits we exploit the important concept of quasiperiodicity. This allows a generalization of the Floquet theorem so that a spin precession frequen…
Fermilab is constructing the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) as the centerpiece of the Accelerator R&D Program towards high-intensity circular machines. One of the factors limiting the beam intensity in present circular accelerators is collective instabilities, which can be suppressed by a spread of betatron frequencies (tunes) through the Landau damping mechanism or by an external damper, if the instability is slow enough. The spread is usually created by octupole magnets, which introduce the tune dependence on the amplitude and, in some cases, by a chromatic spread (tune dependence…
Beam-beam simulations predict that PEP-II luminosity can be increased by operating the horizontal betatron tune near and above a half-integer resonance. However, effects of the resonance and its synchrotron sidebands significantly enhance betatron and chromatic perturbations which tend to reduce dynamic aperture. In the study, chromatic variation of horizontal tune near the resonance was minimized by optimizing local sextupoles in the Interaction Region. Dynamic aperture was calculated using tracking simulations in LEGO code. Dependence of dynamic aperture on the residual orbit, dispersion and…
The performance of the LHC depends critically on the accurate measurements of the betatron tunes. The betatron tune values of each LHC beam may be measured without excitation using a newly installed transverse Schottky monitor. A high-level software package written in Java has been developed for the Schottky system. The software allows end users to monitor and control the Schottky system, and provides them with non-destructive and continuous bunch-by-bunch measurements for the tunes, momentum spreads, chromaticities and emittances of the LHC beams. It has been tested with both proton and lead …
Precise beam based measurement and correction of magnetic optics is essential for the successful operation of accelerators. The LOCO algorithm is a proven and reliable tool, which in some situations can be improved by using a broader class of experimental data. The standard data sets for LOCO include the closed orbit responses to dipole corrector variation, dispersion, and betatron tunes. This paper discusses the benefits from augmenting the data with four additional classes of experimental data: the beam shape measured with beam profile monitors; responses of closed orbit bumps to focusing fi…
With advances in accelerator science and technology in the recent decades, the accelerator community has focused on the development of next-generation light sources, for example the diffraction-limited storage rings (DLSRs), which requires precision control of the electron beam energy and betatron tunes. This work is aimed at understanding magnet hysteresis effects on the electron beam energy and lattice focusing in the circular accelerators, and developing new methods to gain better control of these effects. In this paper, we will report our recent experimental study of the magnetic hysteresi…
One of the main advantages of proposed by P. Raimondi "Crab Waist" collision scheme is a strong suppression of betatron resonances excited by beam-beam interaction. Some qualitative explanations with numerical examples, describing beam-beam resonances for different collision schemes, were given in arXiv:physics/0702033. This paper can be considered as an "appendix" (additional illustration) to that one. We performed a number of full 2D betatron tune scans (beam-beam simulations) for different collision schemes, so one can easily see how the beam-beam resonances appear and disappear, depending …
We revise a previous version of this paper proposing a method to transfer emittances from the transverse planes to the longitudinal. It turned out the system showed non-Hamiltonian behavior because the longitudinal component of the transverse electric field at ends of the transverse resonator were not included in the model. Including those fields the 6D emittance is conserved. We review the mechanism behind the emittance conservation. It is still possible to produce an emittance transfer with the RF quadrupole field setting the tunes on synchro-betatron resonance for a short period of time the…
We give the geralized expression of spin precession of extended bunch particles having both anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments in storage ring. The transversal betatron oscillation formula of the bunch is also given. The latter is the generalization of the Farley's pitch correction \cite{Farley}, including radial oscillation as well as vertical one. Some useful formulae for muon storage ring are discussed in appendix.
In a lepton storage ring of very high energy (e.g. in the $e^+e^-$ Higgs factory) synchrotron radiation from quadrupoles constrains transverse dynamic aperture even in the absence of any magnetic nonlinearities. This was observed in tracking for LEP and the Future Circular $e^+e^-$ Collider (FCC-ee). Here we describe a new mechanism of instability created by modulation of the particle energy at the double betatron frequency by synchrotron radiation in the quadrupoles. Energy modulation varies transverse focusing strength at the same frequency and creates a parametric resonance of the betatron …
An AC dipole is a magnet which produces a sinusoidally oscillating dipole field and excites coherent transverse beam motion in a synchrotron. By observing this coherent motion, the optical parameters can be directly measured at the beam position monitor locations. The driven oscillation induced by an AC dipole will generate a phase space ellipse which differs from that of the free oscillation. If not properly accounted for, this difference can lead to a misinterpretation of the actual optical parameters, for instance, of 6% or more in the cases of the Tevatron, RHIC, or LHC. The effect of an A…
Nonlinear optics is a promising idea potentially opening the path towards achieving super high beam intensities in circular accelerators. Creation of a tune spread reaching 50% of the betatron tune would provide strong Landau damping and make the beam immune to instabilities. Recent theoretical work has identified a possible way to implement stable nonlinear optics by incorporating nonlinear focusing elements into a specially designed machine lattice. In this report we propose the design of a test accelerator for a proof-of-principle experiment. We discuss possible studies at the machine, requ…
A system for bunch-by-bunch detection of transverse proton and antiproton coherent oscillations in the Tevatron is described. It is based on the signal from a single beam-position monitor located in a region of the ring with large amplitude functions. The signal is digitized over a large number of turns and Fourier-analyzed offline with a dedicated algorithm. To enhance the signal, band-limited noise is applied to the beam for about 1 s. This excitation does not adversely affect the circulating beams even at high luminosities. The device has a response time of a few seconds, a frequency resolu…
The bunch-by-bunch BPM signal array has to be reshaped into a turn-by-turn (TBT) matrix in order to make the TBT beam position information of a single bunch available for further data analysis, such as via the Fourier transform to obtain the synchrotron tune and betatron tune, etc. Since the RF frequency sweeps more than 10 MHz in the first 8 ms of a Booster cycle, the revolution time decreases more than 20%. The number of data points for each Booster turn (BT) should be varied in the same pace with the revolution time since the sampling rate of a digital oscilloscope is usually fixed. And thi…
A pulsed electron lens produces a betatron tune shift along a hadron bunch as a function of the longitudinal coordinates, which is a longitudinal detuning. An example of transverse detuning are the tune shifts due to octupole magnets. This paper considers a pulsed electron lens as a measure to mitigate the head-tail instabilities. Using a detailed analytical description within a Vlasov formalism, the coherent properties of the longitudinal and transverse detuning are presented. The analytical predictions are compared with the results of the particle tracking simulations. A pulsed electron lens…
This work demonstrates that two systematic errors, coherent betatron oscillations (CBO) and muon losses can be reduced through application of radio frequency (RF) electric fields, which ultimately increases the sensitivity of the muon $g-2$ experiments. As the ensemble of polarized muons goes around a weak focusing storage ring, their spin precesses, and when they decay through the weak interaction, $μ^+ \rightarrow e^+ ν_e \bar{ν_μ}$, the decay positrons are detected by electromagnetic calorimeters. In addition to the expected exponential decay in the positron time spectrum, the weak decay as…
Several transverse noise sources, such as power supply ripples, can potentially act as an important limiting mechanism for the luminosity production of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and its future High-Luminosity upgrade (HL-LHC). In the presence of non-linearities, depending on the spectral components of the power supply noise and the nature of the source, such a mechanism can increase the diffusion of the particles in the distribution through the excitation of sideband resonances in the vicinity of the ones driven by the lattice non-linearities. For the HL-LHC, due to the reduction of the …
The correction of closed orbit has great influence on the operation of synchrotron. The design of correction system is one significant component of lattice design. It is suggested to set BPMs at the peaks of betatron oscillation. The correctors need to be located at the positions where \b{eta} function is large or the sources of large errors. In the simulation of the closed orbit correction of HIMM synchrotron, one important reason affecting the result of horizontal correction is the longitudinal alignment error of dipole magnet. It is advisable to decrease this kind of alignment error while t…
A system was developed for bunch-by-bunch detection of transverse proton and antiproton coherent oscillations based on the signal from a single beam-position monitor (BPM) located in a region of the ring with large amplitude functions. The signal is digitized over a large number of turns and Fourier-analyzed offline with a dedicated algorithm. To enhance the signal, the beam is excited with band-limited noise for about one second, and this was shown not to significantly affect the circulating beams even at high luminosity. The system is used to measure betatron tunes of individual bunches and …
High brightness linear accelerators typically produce electron beams with peaks in the head and/or tail of the current profile. These current horns are formed after bunch compression due to non-linear correlations in the longitudinal phase space and the higher order optics of the compressor. It has been suggested that this higher order compression can be corrected by inserting an octupole magnet near the center of a bunch compressor. However, this scheme provides a correlated transverse kick leading to growth of the projected emittance. We present here a method whereby octupole magnets are ins…
A resonance method of measuring the electric dipole moment (EDM) of nuclei in storage rings is described, based on two new ideas: (1) Oscillating particles' velocities in resonance with spin precession, and (2) alternately producing two sub-beams with different betatron tunes--one sub-beam to amplify and thus make it easier to correct ring imperfections that produce false signals imitating EDM signals, and the other to make the EDM measurement.
One of the main challenges of the lattice design of synchrotrons, used as light sources or damping rings (DRs), is the minimization of the emittance. The optimal lattice configurations for achieving the absolute minimum emittance are the theoretical minimum emittance (TME) cells. This paper elaborates the optimization strategy in order to further reduce the betatron emittance of a TME cell by using dipoles whose magnetic field varies longitudinally. Based on analytical results, the magnet design for the fabrication of variable bends with the optimal characteristics is discussed. In order to ha…
Analytic expressions for the amplitude-dependent tune shift driven by the quadrupole magnet fringe field have been obtained. The magnitude of the effect is compared with other sources of non-linearity such as chromatic sextupoles, octupole errors of the main quadrupole magnetic field and kinematic terms. A numerical example was the calculation on the lattice of the VEPP-4M e+e- collider.
The primary purpose of the Fermilab Recycler Ring Transverse Digital Damper System is to prevent instabilities due to high phase space densities of the cooled antiproton beam. The system was designed to facilitate Beam Transfer Function measurements using a signal analyzer connected to auxiliary system ports for timing and diagnostic purposes. The Digital Damper System has the capability for both open and closed loop measurements. The Beam Transfer Function provides direct measurement of the machine impedance, and beam and lattice parameters such as betatron tune and chromaticity. An overview …
Understanding beam and spin dynamics are fundamental in accelerator physics, and there has been growing interest in having more precise estimations of the beam and spin dynamics variables, as more high precision particle physics experiments in the Intensity Frontier appear. The present paper provides analytical estimations of some of the important variables such as beam transverse chromaticities and the spin precession frequency bias in the simplest type of particle accelerator: a circular magnetic storage ring with weak vertical focusing. We attempt to precisely obtain the next order approxim…
We consider one of the variants of obtaining the longitudinal polarization of electrons in the SuperB HER at 7 GeV. The spin rotators include the solenoids. The time of polarization relaxation due to the SR processes in the bend magnets of the main arcs is calculated depending on the beam energy and taking into account betatron oscillations. A comparison of the radiation polarization relaxation time with the beam lifetime due to the high luminosity makes it possible to evaluate the efficiency of the longitudinal polarization scheme.
Beam lifetime in storage rings and colliders is affected by, among other effects, lattice nonlinearities. Their control are of great benefit to the dynamic aperture of an accelerator, whose enlargement leads in general to more efficient injection and longer lifetime. This article describes a procedure to evaluate and correct unwanted nonlinearities by using turn-by-turn beam position monitor data, which is an evolution of previous works on the resonance driving terms (RDTs). Effective sextupole magnetic errors and tilts at the ESRF electron storage ring are evaluated and corrected (when possib…
