In this letter, combining peak theory and the numerical analysis of gravitational collapse in the radiation dominated era, we show that the abundance of primordial blacks holes, generated by an enhancement in the inflationary power spectrum, is extremely dependent on the shape of the peak. Given the amplitude of the power spectrum, we show that the density of primordial black holes generated from a narrow peak, is exponentially smaller than in the case of a broad peak. Specifically, for a top-hat profile of the power spectrum in Fourier space, we find that for having primordial black holes comprising all of the dark matter, one would only need a power spectrum amplitude an order of magnitude smaller than suggested previously whereas in the case of a narrow peak, one would instead need a much larger power spectrum amplitude, which in many cases would invalidate the perturbative analysis of cosmological perturbations. Finally, we show that, although critical collapse gives a broad mass spectrum, the density of primordial black holes formed is dominated by masses roughly equal to the cosmological horizon mass measured at horizon crossing.
The current available CMB data show an anomalously low value of the CMB temperature fluctuations at large angular scales (l < 40). This lack of power is not explained by the minimal LCDM model, and one of the possible mechanisms explored in the literature to address this problem is the presence of features in the primordial power spectrum (PPS) motivated by the early universe physics. In this paper, we analyse a set of cutoff inflationary PPS models using a Bayesian model comparison approach in light of the latest Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data from the Planck Collaboration. Our result…
Inflationary cosmology is successful in explaining a number of outstanding cosmological issues including the flatness, the horizon and the relic issues. More spectacular is the experimental confirmation of the structure as arose from the inflationary quantum fluctuations. However, the physics in the inflationary era is unclear. Polarization observations of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) missions may detect the tensor mode effects of inflationary gravitational waves (GWs) and give an energy scale of inflation. To probe the inflationary physics, direct observation of gravitational waves gener…
The gravitational waves measured at LIGO are presumed here to come from merging primordial black holes. We ask how these primordial black holes could arise through inflationary models while not conflicting with current experiments. Among the approaches that work, we investigate the opportunity for corroboration through experimental probes of gravitational waves at pulsar timing arrays. We provide examples of theories that are already ruled out, theories that will soon be probed, and theories that will not be tested in the foreseeable future. The models that are most strongly constrained are th…
We explore cosmological magnetogenesis in the post-inflationary universe, when the inflaton oscillates around its potential minimum and the universe is effectively dominated by cold matter. During this epoch prior to reheating, large-scale magnetic fields can be significantly produced by the cosmological background. By considering magnetogenesis both during and after inflation, we demonstrate that magnetic fields stronger than 10^{-15} G can be generated on Mpc scales without having strong couplings in the theory, or producing too large electric fields that would dominate the universe.
The most up to date femto- and micro-lensing constraints indicate that primordial black holes of $\sim 10^{-16} M_\odot$ and $\sim 10^{-12} M_\odot$, respectively, may constitute a large fraction of the dark matter. We describe analytically and numerically the dynamics by which inflationary fluctuations featuring a time-varying propagation speed or an effective Planck mass can lead to abundant primordial black hole production. As an example, we provide an ad hoc DBI-like model. A very large primordial spectrum originating from a small speed of sound typically leads to strong coupling within th…
We construct an analytically solvable simplified model that captures the essential features for primordial black hole (PBH) production in most models of single-field inflation. The construction makes use of the Wands duality between the constant-roll (or slow-roll) and the preceding ultra-slow-roll phases and can be realized by a simple inflaton potential of two joined parabolas. Within this framework, it is possible to formulate explicit inflationary scenarios consistent with the CMB observations and copious production of PBHs of arbitrary mass. We quantify the variability of the shape of the…
Primordial non-Gaussianity generated in an inflationary model where inflation is preceded by a radiation era is discussed. It is shown that both bispectrum and trispectrum non-Gaussianities are enhanced due to the presence of pre-inflationary radiation era. One distinguishing feature of such a scenario is that the trispectrum non-Gaussianity is larger than the bispectrum one.
We show that current cosmic acceleration can be explained by an almost massless scalar field experiencing quantum fluctuations during primordial inflation. Provided its mass does not exceed the Hubble parameter today, this field has been frozen during the cosmological ages to start dominating the universe only recently. By using supernovae data, completed with baryonic acoustic oscillations from galaxy surveys and cosmic microwave background anisotropies, we infer the energy scale of primordial inflation to be around a few TeV, which implies a negligible tensor-to-scalar ratio of the primordia…
The large-scale power deficit in the cosmic microwave background fluctuations might be relevant with the physics of pre-inflation, a bounce, or a superinflationary phase preceding slow-roll inflation, which can provide a singular-free realization of inflation. We investigate the primordial perturbations from such pre-inflationary evolutions, which generally may consist of multiple phases with different background dynamics, and give a universal formula for the power spectrum of primordial perturbations in terms of the recursive Bogoliubov coefficients. We also apply our formula to corresponding…
We propose a new single field inflation model in which the usual slow-roll inflation is joined to a new period of slow-climb and slow-roll inflation through a short intermediate non-inflationary phase. We then show that primordial curvature perturbations can be enhanced at small scales, a sizable amount of primordial black holes (PBHs) can be produced which make up most of dark matter, the gravitational waves (GWs) induced by scalar metric perturbations that accompany with the formation of PBHs can be detectable by future GW experiments, and last but not least, our model is compatible with the…
We summarize our work on the generation of primordial black holes in a type of two-field inflationary models. The key ingredient is a sharp turn of the background trajectory in field space. We show that certain classes of solutions to the equations of motion exhibit precisely this kind of behavior. Among them we find solutions, which describe a transition between an ultra-slow roll and a slow roll phases of inflation.
Working in an idealised framework in which a series of phases of evolution defined by the second slow-roll parameter $η$ are matched together, we calculate the reduced bispectrum, $f_{\rm NL}$, for models of inflation with a large peak in their primordial power spectra. We find $f_{\rm NL}$ is typically approximately constant over scales at which the peak is located, and provide an analytic approximation for this value. This allows us to identify the conditions under which $f_{\rm NL}$ is large enough to have a significant impact on the resulting production of primordial black holes (PBHs) and…
Following a new microlensing constraint on primordial black holes (PBHs) with $\sim10^{20}$--$10^{28}\,\mathrm{g}$~[1], we revisit the idea of PBH as all Dark Matter (DM). We have shown that the updated observational constraints suggest the viable mass function for PBHs as all DM to have a peak at $\simeq 10^{20}\,\mathrm{g}$ with a small width $σ\lesssim 0.1$, by imposing observational constraints on an extended mass function in a proper way. We have also provided an inflation model that successfully generates PBHs as all DM fulfilling this requirement.
We consider the impact of quantum diffusion on inflationary dynamics during an ultra-slow-roll phase, which can be of particular significance for the formation of primordial black holes. We show, by means of a fully analytical approach, that the power spectrum of comoving curvature perturbations computed in stochastic inflation matches precisely, at the linear level, the result obtained by solving the Mukhanov-Sasaki equation, even in the presence of an ultra-slow-roll phase. We confirm this result numerically in a model in which the inflaton has a polynomial potential and is coupled quadratic…
With the enhancement mechanism provided by a noncanonical kinetic term with a peak, the amplitude of primordial curvature perturbations can be enhanced by seven orders of magnitude at small scales while keeping to be consistent with observations at large scales. The peak function and inflationary potential are not restricted in this mechanism. We use the Higgs model and T-model as examples to show how abundant primordial black hole dark matter with different mass and scalar induced secondary gravitational waves with different peak frequency are generated. We also show that the enhanced power s…
We make an complementary investigation of the primordial trispectrum from exchanging intermediate scalar modes in multi-field inflation models with generalized kinetic terms. Together with the calculation of irreducible contributions to the primordial trispectrum in Ref.[103], we give the full leading-order primordial trispectrum in generalized multi-field models.
Primordial Gravitational Waves are the next target of modern cosmology. They represent a window on the early Universe and the only probe of the physics and microphysics of the inflationary period. When the production of GWs happens in scenarios richer than the standard single-field slow-roll, the GW signal becomes potentially detectable also on scales smaller than the Cosmic Microwave Background. LISA will be extremely complementary to CMB experiments to extract information about primordial inflationary models and in particular to probe phases of the inflationary period for which we have very …
In this work we shall consider the effects of a geometrically generated post-inflationary era on the energy spectrum of the primordial gravitational waves. Specifically, we shall consider a post-inflationary constant equation of state era, generated by the synergistic effect of $f(R)$ gravity and of radiation and matter perfect fluids. Two cases of interest shall be studied, one with equation of state parameter $w=-1/3$, in which case the Universe neither accelerates nor decelerates, and one with $w=0$ so an early matter domination era. For the evaluation of the inflationary observational indi…
We compute the non-Gaussianities that arise in single field, slow roll inflationary models arising from arbitrary homogeneous initial states, as well as subleading contributions to the power spectrum. Non Bunch-Davies vacuum initial states can arise if the transition to the single field, slow roll inflation phase occurs only shortly before observable modes left the horizon. They can also arise from new physics at high energies that has been integrated out. Our general result for the bispectrum exhibits several features that were previously seen in special cases.
Models are developed to estimate properties of relic cosmic perturbations with "spooky" nonlocal correlations on the inflationary horizon, analogous to those previously posited for information on black hole event horizons. Scalar curvature perturbations are estimated to emerge with a dimensionless power spectral density $Δ_S^2\approx H t_P$, the product of inflationary expansion rate $H$ with Planck time $t_P$, larger than standard inflaton fluctuations. Current measurements of the spectrum are used to derive constraints on parameters of the effective potential in a slow-roll background. It is…
The next generation of gravitational-wave experiments, such as Einstein Telescope, Cosmic Explorer and LISA, will test the primordial black hole scenario. We provide a forecast for the minimum testable value of the abundance of primordial black holes as a function of their masses for both the unclustered and clustered spatial distributions at formation. In particular, we show that these instruments may test abundances, relative to the dark matter, as low as $10^{-10}$.
We present new constraints on possible features in the primordial inflationary density perturbations power spectrum in light of the recent Cosmic Microwave Background Anisotropies measurements from the Planck satellite. We found that the Planck data hints for the presence of features in two different ranges of angular scales, corresponding to multipoles 10< l <60 and 150< l < 300, with a decrease in the best fit chi^2 value with respect to the featureless "vanilla" LCDM model of Delta chi^2 around 9 in both cases.
The generation of large-scale magnetic fields in inflationary cosmology is explored, in particular, in a kind of moduli inflation motivated by racetrack inflation in the context of the Type IIB string theory. In this model, the conformal invariance of the hypercharge electromagnetic fields is broken thanks to the coupling of both the scalar and pseudoscalar fields to the hypercharge electromagnetic fields. The following three cosmological observable quantities are first evaluated: The current magnetic field strength on the Hubble horizon scale, which is much smaller than the upper limit from t…
Inflation may provide unique insight into the physics at the highest available energy scales that cannot be replicated in any realistic terrestrial experiment. Features in the primordial power spectrum are generically predicted in a wide class of models of inflation and its alternatives, and are observationally one of the most overlooked channels for finding evidence for non-minimal inflationary models. Constraints from observations of the cosmic microwave background cover the widest range of feature frequencies, but the most sensitive constraints will come from future large-scale structure su…
We study the non-Gaussian features in single-field slow-roll inflationary scenario where inflation is preceded by a radiation era. In such a scenario both bispectrum and trispectrum non-Gaussianities are enhanced. Interestingly, the trispectrum in this scenario does not depend up on the slow-roll parameters and thus $τ_{NL}$ is larger than $f_{NL}$ which can be a signature of such a pre-inflationary radiation era.
In this work we examine the effects of a pre-inflationary de Sitter bounce on the energy spectrum of the primordial gravitational waves. Specifically we assume that the Universe is described by several evolution patches, starting with a de Sitter pre-inflationary bounce which is followed by an quasi-de Sitter slow-roll inflationary era, followed by a constant equation of state parameter abnormal reheating era, which is followed by the radiation and matter domination eras and the late-time acceleration eras. The bounce and the inflationary era can be realized by vacuum $f(R)$ gravity and the ab…
Effects of heavy fields on primordial spectra of curvature perturbations are discussed in inflationary models with a sudden turning trajectory. When heavy fields are excited after the sudden turn and oscillate around the bottom of the potential, the following two effects are generically induced: deformation of the inflationary background spacetime and conversion interactions between adiabatic and isocurvature perturbations, both of which can affect the primordial density perturbations. In this paper, we calculate primordial spectra in inflationary models with sudden turning potentials taking i…
Inflationary scenarios in string theory often involve a large number of light scalar fields, whose presence can enrich the post-inflationary evolution of primordial fluctuations generated during the inflationary epoch. We provide a simple example of such post-inflationary processing within an explicit string-inflationary construction, using a Kahler modulus as the inflaton within the framework of LARGE Volume Type-IIB string flux compactifications. We argue that inflationary models within this broad category often have a selection of scalars that are light enough to be cosmologically relevant,…
We present three non-parametric Bayesian primordial reconstructions using Planck 2018 polarization data: linear spline primordial power spectrum reconstructions, cubic spline inflationary potential reconstructions and sharp-featured primordial power spectrum reconstructions. All three methods conditionally show hints of an oscillatory feature in the primordial power spectrum in the multipole range $\ell\sim20$ to $\ell\sim50$, which is to some extent preserved upon marginalization. We find no evidence for deviations from a pure power law across a broad observable window ($50\lesssim\ell\lesssi…
We investigate constraints on power spectra of the primordial curvature and tensor perturbations with priors based on single-field slow-roll inflation models. We stochastically draw the Hubble slow-roll parameters and generate the primordial power spectra using the inflationary flow equations. Using data from recent observations of CMB and several measurements of geometrical distances in the late Universe, Bayesian parameter estimation and model selection are performed for models that have separate priors on the slow-roll parameters. The same analysis is also performed adopting the standard pa…
We extend the formalism of time-sliced perturbation theory (TSPT) for cosmological large-scale structure to include non-Gaussian initial conditions. We show that in such a case the TSPT interaction vertices acquire new contributions whose time-dependence factorizes for the Einstein-de Sitter cosmology. The new formulation is free from spurious infrared (IR) enhancements and reveals a clear IR structure of non-Gaussian vertices. We use the new technique to study the evolution of oscillating features in primordial statistics and show that they are damped due to non-linear effects of large bulk f…
The origin of large scale magnetic fields is one of the most puzzling topics in cosmology and astrophysics. It is assumed that the observed magnetic fields result from the amplification of an initial field produced in the early universe. In this paper we compute the exact power spectrum of magnetic fields created after inflation best known as post inflationary magnetic fields, using the first order cosmological perturbation theory. Our treatment differs from others works because we include an infrared cutoff which encodes only causal modes in the spectrum. The cross-correlation between magneti…
This article examines how breaking a Lorentz-invariant description of nature at tiny space-time intervals would affect the non-Gaussian character of the pattern of primordial perturbations left by inflation. We specifically study a set of irrelevant operators that preserve the spatial symmetries of the usual inflationary background. The non-Gaussian component in the primordial fluctuations can be much larger than the usual, small, inflationary prediction and can thus lead to much stronger constraints on the role of "trans-Planckian" physics in inflation than those from the measurements of the …
In this paper we review the production of primordial black holes (PBHs) during preheating after a chaotic inflationary model. All relevant equations of motion are solved numerically in a modified version of HLattice, and we then calculate the mass variance to determine structure formation during preheating. It is found that production of PBHs can be a generic result of the model, even though the results seem to be sensitive to the values of the smoothing scale. We consider a constraint for overproduction of PBHs that could uncover some stress between inflation-preheating models and observation…
We present a model that attempts to fuse the inflationary era and the subsequent radiation dominated era under a unified framework so as to provide a smooth transition between the two. The model is based on a modification of the generalized Chaplygin gas. We constrain the model observationally by mapping the primordial power spectrum of the scalar perturbations to the latest data of WMAP7. We compute as well the spectrum of the primordial gravitational waves as would be measured today.
The origin of large-scale magnetic field in the universe is one of the greatest mysteries in modern cosmology. We present a new mechanism for generation of large-scale magnetic field, based on the power-counting renormalizable theory of gravitation recently proposed by Horava. Contrary to the usual case in general relativity, the U(1) gauge symmetry of a Maxwell action in this theory permits terms breaking conformal invariance in the ultraviolet. Moreover, for high frequency modes, the anisotropic scaling intrinsic to the theory inevitably makes the sound horizon far outside the Hubble horizon…
Based on the effective field theory (EFT) of nonsingular cosmologies, we build a stable model, without the ghost and gradient instabilities, of bounce inflation (inflation is preceded by a cosmological bounce). We perform a full simulation for the evolution of scalar perturbation, and find that the perturbation spectrum has a large-scale suppression (as expected), which is consistent with the power deficit of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) TT-spectrum at low multipoles, but unexpectedly, it also shows itself one marked lower valley, which actually provides a better fit to the dip at mul…
A claimed detection of cosmological tensor perturbations from inflation via B-mode polarization of the cosmic microwave background requires distinguishing other possible B-mode sources. One such potential source of confusion is primordial magnetic fields. For sufficiently low-amplitude B-mode signals, the microwave background temperature and polarization power spectra from power-law tensor perturbations and from a power-law primordial magnetic field are indistinguishable. However, we show that such a magnetic field will induce a small-scale Faraday rotation which is detectable using four-point…
Primordial black holes (PBHs) are one of the candidates to explain the gravitational wave (GW) signals observed by the LIGO detectors. Among several phenomena in the early Universe, cosmic inflation is a major example to generate PBHs from large primordial density perturbations. In this paper, we discuss the possibility to interpret the observed GW events as mergers of PBHs which are produced by cosmic inflation. The primordial curvature perturbation should be large enough to produce a sizable amount of PBHs and thus we have several other probes to test this scenario. We point out that the cur…

We update the constraints on possible features in the primordial inflationary density perturbation spectrum by using the latest data from the WMAP7 and ACT Cosmic Microwave Background experiments. The inclusion of new data significantly improves the constraints with respect to older work, especially to smaller angular scales. While we found no clear statistical evidence in the data for extensions to the simplest, featureless, inflationary model, models with a step provide a significantly better fit than standard featureless power-law spectra. We show that the possibility of a step in the infla…
The formation of primordial black holes is studied using superconformal inflationary $α$-attractors. An inflaton potential is constructed with a plateau-like region which brings about the onset of an ultra slow-roll region where the required enhancement in the curvature power spectrum takes place. This is accomplished by carefully fine-tuning the parameters in the potential. For the parameter sets, the amount of observable inflation is such that the curvature perturbation $\mathcal{P}_{\mathcal{R}}$ peaks at $\sim 10^{14}\text{Mpc}^{-1}$, producing PBHs in the mass window $10^{16}\text{g}\leq …
The light relic density affects the thermal and expansion history of the early Universe leaving a number of observable imprints. We focus on the primordial abundances of light elements produced during the process of Big Bang nucleosynthesis which are influenced by the light relic density. Primordial abundances can be used to infer the density of light relics and thereby serve as a probe of physics beyond the Standard Model. We calculate the observational uncertainty on primordial light element abundances and associated quantities that would be required in order for these measurements to achiev…
We discuss whether an unaccounted contribution to the Cosmic Microwave Background polarization $B$-mode by primordial magnetic fields (PMFs) can bias future constraints on inflationary gravitational waves. As a case-study, we consider a scale-invariant PMF spectrum with amplitude of $\approx{1}\,{\mathrm{nG}}$ on $1\,\mathrm{Mpc}$ scales, compatible with current cosmological bounds. We find a degeneracy in the $B$-mode spectra between PMFs and inflationary gravitational waves. If PMFs of this amplitude are not accounted for, future CMB experiments could claim a false detection of a tensor-to-s…
Recent B-mode polarization observation seems to imply the tensor tilt $n_T\gtrsim 1$ at large angular scale, if the primordial signal is dominated. We show that for a primordial universe, which is in a slowly expanding genesis phase before the slow-roll inflation, the primordial tensor spectrum will get a large-scale cutoff, i.e. $n_T\gtrsim 1$ at large scales while $n_T\simeq 0$ at small scale. We find that this inflationary scenario not only may be consistent with the observation, but also predicts a large-scale anomaly in BB power spectrum, i.e. due to the large suppression of tensor pertur…
