Parameter pruning is a promising approach for CNN compression and acceleration by eliminating redundant model parameters with tolerable performance degrade. Despite its effectiveness, existing regularization-based parameter pruning methods usually drive weights towards zero with large and constant regularization factors, which neglects the fragility of the expressiveness of CNNs, and thus calls for a more gentle regularization scheme so that the networks can adapt during pruning. To achieve this, we propose a new and novel regularization-based pruning method, named IncReg, to incrementally assign different regularization factors to different weights based on their relative importance. Empirical analysis on CIFAR-10 dataset verifies the merits of IncReg. Further extensive experiments with popular CNNs on CIFAR-10 and ImageNet datasets show that IncReg achieves comparable to even better results compared with state-of-the-arts. Neural network pruning is frequently used to compress over-parameterized networks by large amounts, while incurring only marginal drops in generalization performance. However, the impact of pruning on networks that have been highly optimized for efficient inference has not received the same level of attention. In this paper, we analyze the effect of pruning for computer vision, and study state-of-the-art ConvNets, such as the FBNetV3 family of models. We show that model pruning approaches can be used to further optimize networks trained through NAS (Neural Architecture Search). The resulting f…

The success of CNNs in various applications is accompanied by a significant increase in the computation and parameter storage costs. Recent efforts toward reducing these overheads involve pruning and compressing the weights of various layers without hurting original accuracy. However, magnitude-based pruning of weights reduces a significant number of parameters from the fully connected layers and may not adequately reduce the computation costs in the convolutional layers due to irregular sparsity in the pruned networks. We present an acceleration method for CNNs, where we prune filters from CN…

Pruning convolutional filters has demonstrated its effectiveness in compressing ConvNets. Prior art in filter pruning requires users to specify a target model complexity (e.g., model size or FLOP count) for the resulting architecture. However, determining a target model complexity can be difficult for optimizing various embodied AI applications such as autonomous robots, drones, and user-facing applications. First, both the accuracy and the speed of ConvNets can affect the performance of the application. Second, the performance of the application can be hard to assess without evaluating ConvNe…

This work presents a probabilistic channel pruning method to accelerate Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Previous pruning methods often zero out unimportant channels in training in a deterministic manner, which reduces CNN's learning capacity and results in suboptimal performance. To address this problem, we develop a probability-based pruning algorithm, called batch whitening channel pruning (BWCP), which can stochastically discard unimportant channels by modeling the probability of a channel being activated. BWCP has several merits. (1) It simultaneously trains and prunes CNNs from scra…

Egocentric gestures are the most natural form of communication for humans to interact with wearable devices such as VR/AR helmets and glasses. A major issue in such scenarios for real-world applications is that may easily become necessary to add new gestures to the system e.g., a proper VR system should allow users to customize gestures incrementally. Traditional deep learning methods require storing all previous class samples in the system and training the model again from scratch by incorporating previous samples and new samples, which costs humongous memory and significantly increases compu…
The success of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in computer vision applications has been accompanied by a significant increase of computation and memory costs, which prohibits its usage on resource-limited environments such as mobile or embedded devices. To this end, the research of CNN compression has recently become emerging. In this paper, we propose a novel filter pruning scheme, termed structured sparsity regularization (SSR), to simultaneously speedup the computation and reduce the memory overhead of CNNs, which can be well supported by various off-the-shelf deep learning libraries. …
This work introduces a new training and compression pipeline to build Nested Sparse ConvNets, a class of dynamic Convolutional Neural Networks (ConvNets) suited for inference tasks deployed on resource-constrained devices at the edge of the Internet-of-Things. A Nested Sparse ConvNet consists of a single ConvNet architecture containing N sparse sub-networks with nested weights subsets, like a Matryoshka doll, and can trade accuracy for latency at run time, using the model sparsity as a dynamic knob. To attain high accuracy at training time, we propose a gradient masking technique that optimall…

Channel pruning has demonstrated its effectiveness in compressing ConvNets. In many related arts, the importance of an output feature map is only determined by its associated filter. However, these methods ignore a small part of weights in the next layer which disappears as the feature map is removed. They ignore the phenomenon of weight dependency. Besides, many pruning methods use only one criterion for evaluation and find a sweet spot of pruning structure and accuracy in a trial-and-error fashion, which can be time-consuming. In this paper, we proposed a channel pruning algorithm via multi-…

The advent of sparsity inducing techniques in neural networks has been of a great help in the last few years. Indeed, those methods allowed to find lighter and faster networks, able to perform more efficiently in resource-constrained environment such as mobile devices or highly requested servers. Such a sparsity is generally imposed on the weights of neural networks, reducing the footprint of the architecture. In this work, we go one step further by imposing sparsity jointly on the weights and on the input data. This can be achieved following a three-step process: 1) impose a certain structure…

Incremental Task learning (ITL) is a category of continual learning that seeks to train a single network for multiple tasks (one after another), where training data for each task is only available during the training of that task. Neural networks tend to forget older tasks when they are trained for the newer tasks; this property is often known as catastrophic forgetting. To address this issue, ITL methods use episodic memory, parameter regularization, masking and pruning, or extensible network structures. In this paper, we propose a new incremental task learning framework based on low-rank fac…
