Updated values and corresponding uncertainties of Isovector Giant Dipole Resonance (GDR) parameters which are obtained by the least-squares fitting of theoretical photoabsorption cross sections to experimental data are presented. The theoretical photoabsorption cross sections are taken as a sum of the components corresponding to the excitation of the GDR and quasideuteron photodisintegration. The current compilation is an extension and improvement of the earlier compilations of Lorentzian parameters for ground-state photoneutron and photoabsorption cross sections and covers experimental data made available up to June 2017.
Two conceptually different hyperspherical harmonics expansions are used for the calculation of the total 4He photoabsorption cross section. Besides the well known method of CHH the recently introduced effective interaction approach for the hyperspherical formalism is applied. Semi-realistic NN potentials are employed and final state interaction is fully taken into account via the Lorentz integral transform method. The results show that the effective interaction leads to a very good convergence, while the correlation method exhibits a less rapid convergence in the giant dipole resonance region.…
The finite amplitude method (FAM), which we have recently proposed (T. Nakatsukasa, T. Inakura, and K. Yabana, Phys. Rev. C 76, 024318 (2007)), simplifies significantly the fully self-consistent RPA calculation. Employing the FAM, we are conducting systematic, fully self-consistent response calculations for a wide mass region. This paper is intended to present a computational scheme to be used in the systematic investigation and to show the performance of the FAM for a realistic Skyrme energy functional. We implemented the method in the mixed representation in which the forward and backward RP…
A semimicroscopical approach is applied to describe photoabsorption and partial photonucleon reactions accompanied by the excitation of the giant dipole resonance (GDR). The approach is based on the continuum-RPA (CRPA) with a phenomenological description for the spreading effect. The phenomenological isoscalar part of the nuclear mean field, momentum-independent Landau-Migdal particle-hole interaction, and separable momentum-dependent forces are used as input quantities for the CRPA calculations. The experimental photoabsorption and partial $(n,γ)$-reaction cross sections in the vicinity of t…

Photoabsorption cross sections and gamma-decay strength function are calculated and compared with experimental data to test the existing models of dipole radiative strength functions (RSF) for the middle-weight and heavy atomic nuclei. Simplified version of the modified Lorentzian model are proposed. New tables of giant dipole resonance (GDR) parameters are given. It is shown that the phenomenological closed-form models with asymmetric shape can be used for overall estimates of the dipole RSF in the gamma -ray energy region up to about 20 MeV when GDR parameters are known or the GDR systematic…
Deep inelastic electron scattering (DIS) from nucleons at low values of the Bjorken variable $x \cong Q^2/W^2 \lsim ~ 0.1$ proceeds via fluctuations of the photon into quark-antiquark dipole states that subsequently interact with the gluon field in the nucleon. Dependent on the interaction energy, $W$, the color-gauge-invariant dipole interaction with the gluon field in the nucleon, for any fixed dipole size, contains the limits of i) color transparency and ii) saturation, where "saturation" stands for the approach to a hadronlike dipole-proton interaction cross section. All essential features…

Photonuclear reactions at energies covering the giant dipole resonance (GDR) region are analyzed with an approach based on nuclear photoabsorption followed by the process of competition between light particle evaporation and fission for the excited nucleus. The photoabsorption cross section at energies covering the GDR region is contributed by both the Lorentz type GDR cross section and the quasideuteron cross section. The evaporation-fission process of the compound nucleus is simulated in a Monte-Carlo framework. Photofission reaction cross sections are analyzed in a systematic manner in the …
Photoabsorption cross sections of Nd and Sm isotopes from spherical to deformed even nuclei are systematically investigated by means of the quasiparticle-random-phase approximation based on the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov ground states (HFB+QRPA) using the Skyrme energy density functional. The gradual onset of deformation in the ground states as increasing the neutron number leads to characteristic features of the shape phase transition. The calculation well reproduce the isotopic dependence of broadening and emergence of a double-peak structure in the cross sections without any adjustable paramet…
A resonance behaviour of the far infrared absorption probability at a frequency \sim N^{1/4} is predicted for clusters of N electron-hole pairs (2\le N\le 110) confined in disk-shaped quantum dots. For radially symmetric dots, the absorption is dominated by a Giant Dipole Resonance, which accounts for more than 98 % of the energy-weighted photoabsorption sum rule.
The description of photoabsorption cross-sections of cold nuclei by closed-form Lorentzian models of photon strength functions for photoexcitation by electric dipole gamma-rays is considered. Systematics of the GDR parameters are given and input parameters of different analytical models are discussed The experimental data are compared with theoretical calculations for even-even nuclei using criteria of minimum of both least-square value and root-mean-square deviation factor. Simple extensions of the models with energy-dependent widths to high gamma-ray energies $\gtrsim $ 30MeV which hold the …
A novel approach to obtain the excitation spectrum of nuclei is presented as well as its proof-of-principle. The Monte Carlo Shell Model is extended so that the excitation spectrum can be calculated from its ground state with full of correlations. This new methodology is sketched with the example of E1 excitations from the nucleus 88Sr in comparison to experiment. From the B(E1; 0+1 -> 1- ) value, the photoabsorption cross section is calculated, with the Giant Dipole and Pygmy Dipole Resonances in agreement with experiment. Applications to 90Sr and 90,93Zr are shown with similar characteristic…
The electric dipole strength distribution in 120Sn between 5 and 22 MeV has been determined at RCNP Osaka from a polarization transfer analysis of proton inelastic scattering at E_0 = 295 MeV and forward angles including 0°. Combined with photoabsorption data an electric dipole polarizability α_D(120Sn) = 8.93(36) fm^3 is extracted. The dipole polarizability as isovector observable par excellence carries direct information on the nuclear symmetry energy and its density dependence. The correlation of the new value with the well established α_D(208Pb) serves as a test of its prediction by nuclea…
Background: The quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA), within the framework of the nuclear density functional theory (DFT), has been a standard tool to access the collective excitations of the atomic nuclei. Recently, finite amplitude method (FAM) has been developed, in order to perform the QRPA calculations efficiently without any truncation on the two-quasiparticle model space. Purpose: We discuss the nuclear giant dipole resonance (GDR) in heavy rare-earth isotopes, for which the conventional matrix diagonalization of the QRPA is numerically demanding. A role of the Thomas-Reiche-…
A survey of the fine structure of the Isovector Giant Dipole Resonance (IVGDR) was performed, using the recently commissioned zero-degree facility of the K600 magnetic spectrometer at iThemba LABS. Inelastic proton scattering at an incident energy of 200 MeV was measured on $^{27}$Al, $^{40}$Ca, $^{56}$Fe, $^{58}$Ni and $^{208}$Pb. A high energy resolution ($\rmΔ\it{E} \simeq$ 40 keV FWHM) could be achieved after utilising faint-beam and dispersion-matching techniques. Considerable fine structure is observed in the energy region of the IVGDR and characteristic energy scales are extracted from …
The finite amplitude method (FAM) is a very efficient approach for solving the fully self-consistent random-phase approximation (RPA) equations. We use FAM to rederive the RPA matrices for general Skyrme-like functionals, calculate the electric dipole (E1) and the magnetic dipole (M1) giant resonances, and compare the results with available experimental and evaluated data. For the E1 transitions in heavy nuclei, the calculations reproduce well the resonance energy of the photoabsorption cross sections. In the case of M1 transitions, we show that the residual interaction does not affect the tra…
We derive the non-abelian generalization of the Furry approximation which describes the transverse dynamical evolution of a hard projectile parton inside a spatially extended colour target field. This provides a unified starting point for the target rest frame description of the nuclear dependence of a large class of observables. For the case of the virtual gamma -> q-qbar photoabsorption cross section, we investigate then in detail under which conditions the nuclear dependence encoded in the Furry wavefunctions can be parametrized by a q-qbar QCD dipole cross section. The important condition …
We evaluate uncertainty of peak energy of giant dipole resonance (GDR), propagated from uncertainty of parameters of Skyrme interaction. The Monte Carlo calculation of the random phase approximation using randomized Skyrme parameters is performed. Under the condition that the correlations between each of the Skyrme parameters is considered, the GDR peak energy has the uncertainty of $\sim$ 1 MeV irrespective of nuclear mass and is strongly correlated with the Skyrme parameters, in present calculations. This serves a guide for a new parametrization of effective interactions.
Nuclear clustering plays an important role, especially in the dynamics of light nuclei. The importance of the emergence of the nuclear clustering was discussed in the recent measurement of the photoabsorption cross sections as it offered the possibility of the coexistence of various excitation modes which are closely related to the nuclear clustering. To understand the excitation mechanism, we study the electric-dipole ($E1$) responses of $^6$Li with a fully microscopic six-body calculation. The ground-state wave function is accurately described with a superposition of correlated Gaussian (CG)…
The structure of E1 resonances is examined in a microscopic random phase approximation calculation for neutral, symmetric, closed shell, electron-hole systems in a quantum dot. The number of electron-hole pairs, N, is varied from 6 to 42. The ocurrence of small, but distinct, E1 peaks in the far infrared spectra located in the low energy tail of the giant dipole resonance and consisting of highly coherent electron-hole excitations is predicted. These pigmy resonances account for about 2 % of the dipole energy-weighted photoabsorption sum rule. A very weak dependence of the average pigmy resona…
The remaining uncertainties of isovector nuclear interactions call for reliable experimental measurements of isovector probes in finite nuclei. Based on the Bayesian analysis, although the neutron-skin thickness data or the isovector giant dipole resonance data in $^{208}$Pb can constrain only one isovector interaction parameter, correlations between other parameters are built. Using combined data of both the neutron-skin thickness and the isovector giant dipole resonance helps to constrain significantly all isovector interaction parameters, thus serves as a useful way in the future analysis.
Inelastic proton scattering experiments were performed at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics, Osaka, with a 295 MeV beam covering laboratory angles 0°-6° and excitation energies 6-22 MeV. Cross sections due to E1 and M1 excitations were extracted with a multipole decomposition analysis and then converted to reduced transition probabilities with the "virtual photon method" for E1 and the "unit cross section method" for M1 excitations, respectively. Including a theory-aided correction for the high excitation energy region not covered experimentally, the electric dipole polarizability was de…
We present an ab-initio calculation of the giant dipole resonance in 16O based on a nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction from chiral effective field theory that reproduces NN scattering data with high accuracy. By merging the Lorentz integral transform and the coupled-cluster methods, we extend the previous theoretical limits for break-up observables in light nuclei with mass numbers (A<=7), and address the collective giant dipole resonance of 16O. We successfully benchmark the new approach against virtually exact results from the hyper-spherical harmonics method in 4He. Our results for 16O reprod…
Following a previous paper [Y. Shi, Phys. Rev. C 98, 014329(2018)], we present an extension of the density-functional theory to allow for dynamic calculations based on the obtained static Hartree-Fock results. We perform extensive benchmark calculations, by comparing the calculated results with that of an existing code Sky3D. To perform linear-response calculations using the TDDFT method, comparisons have been made with the finite-amplitude quasiparticle random-phase approximation (FAM-QRPA) method. We plan to apply the TDDFT method to a systematic description of the IVD resonances in the Zr, …

The uncertainties from the infrared renormalons in the (color dipole) gluon distribution is estimated. It is shown that non-linear saturation effects at small-$x$ shift the first IR pole at the Borel plane from $2/β_2$ to $1/β_2$. As a consequence the estimated uncertainty is found to be ${\cal O}\left(Λ_{\rm QCD}^2\right)$ instead of ${\cal O}\left(Λ_{\rm QCD}^4\right)$.

We have studied the giant dipole resonance (GDR) in the hot and rotating nucleus $^{152}$Gd within the framework of thermal shape fluctuation model (TSFM) built on the microscopic-macroscopic calculations of the free energies with a macroscopic approach for the GDR. Our results for GDR cross sections are in good agreement with the experimental values except for a component peaking around 17 MeV where the data has large uncertainties. Such a component is beyond our description which properly takes care of the splitting of GDR components due to the deformation and Coriolis effects. Around this 1…
We investigate the impact of the neutron-skin thickness Delta(R) on the energy difference between the anti-analog giant dipole resonance (AGDR), E(AGDR), and the isobaric analog state (IAS), E(IAS), in a heavy nucleus such as 208Pb. For guidance, we first develop a simple and analytic, yet physical, approach based on the Droplet Model that linearly connects the energy difference E(AGDR)-E(IAS) with Delta(R). To test this correlation on more fundamental grounds, we employ a family of systematically varied Skyrme energy density functionals where variations on the value of the symmetry energy at …
