The staggered quantum walk is a type of discrete-time quantum walk model without a coin which can be generated on a graph using particular partitions of the graph nodes. We design Hamiltonians for potential realization of the staggered dynamics on a two-dimensional lattice composed of superconducting microwave resonators connected with tunable couplings. The naive generalization of the one-dimensional staggered dynamics generates two uncoupled one-dimensional quantum walks thus more complex partitions need to be employed. However, by analyzing the coherence of the dynamics, we show that the quantumness of the evolution corresponding to two independent one-dimensional quantum walks can be elevated to the level of a single two-dimensional quantum walk, only by modifying the boundary conditions. In fact, by changing the lattice boundary conditions (or topology), we explore the walk on different surfaces such as torus, Klein bottle, real projective plane and sphere. The coherence and the entropy reach different levels depending on the topology of the surface. We observe that the entropy captures similar information as coherence, thus we use it to explore the effects of boundaries on the dynamics of the continuous-time quantum walk and the classical random walk.
Quantum walks are recognizably useful for the development of new quantum algorithms, as well as for the investigation of several physical phenomena in quantum systems. Actual implementations of quantum walks face technological difficulties similar to the ones for quantum computers, though. Therefore, there is a strong motivation to develop new quantum-walk models which might be easier to implement. In this work, we present an extension of the staggered quantum walk model that is fitted for physical implementations in terms of time-independent Hamiltonians. We demonstrate that this class of qua…
A discrete-time staggered quantum walk was recently introduced as a generalization that allows to unify other versions, such as the coined and Szegedy's walk. However, it also produces new forms of quantum walks not covered by previous versions. To explore their properties, we study here the staggered walk on a hexagonal lattice. Such a walk is defined using a set of overlapping tessellations that cover the graph edges, and each tessellation is a partition of the node set into cliques. The hexagonal lattice requires at least three tessellations. Each tessellation is associated with a local uni…
The staggered quantum walk model allows to establish an unprecedented connection between discrete-time quantum walks and graph theory. We call attention to the fact that a large subclass of the coined model is included in Szegedy's model, which in its turn is entirely included in the staggered model. In order to compare those three quantum walk models, we put them in the staggered formalism and we show that the Szegedy and coined models are defined on a special subclass of graphs. This inclusion scheme is also true when the searching framework is added. We use graph theory to characterize whic…
We characterize a close connection between the continuous-time quantum-walk model and a discrete-time quantum-walk version, based on the staggered model with Hamiltonians in a class of Cayley graphs, which can be considered as a discretization of continuous-time quantum walks. This connection provides examples of perfect state transfer and instantaneous uniform mixing in the staggered model. On the other hand, we provide some more examples of perfect state transfer and instantaneous uniform mixing in the staggered model that cannot be reproduced by the continuous-time model.
Decoherence phenomenon has been widely studied in different types of quantum walks. In this work we show how to model decoherence inspired by percolation on staggered quantum walks. Two models of unitary noise are described: breaking polygons and breaking vertices. The evolution operators subject to these noises are obtained and the equivalence to the coined quantum walk model is presented. Further, we numerically analyze the effect of these decoherence models on the two-dimensional grid of $4$-cliques. We examine how these perturbations affect the quantum walk based search algorithm in this g…
The staggered quantum walk model on a graph is defined by an evolution operator that is the product of local operators related to two or more independent graph tessellations. A graph tessellation is a partition of the set of nodes that respects the neighborhood relation. Flip-flop coined quantum walks with the Hadamard or Grover coins can be expressed as staggered quantum walks by converting the coin degree of freedom into extra nodes in the graph. We propose an implementation of the staggered model with superconducting microwave resonators, where the required local operations are provided by …
Quantum search on the two-dimensional lattice with one marked vertex and cyclic boundary conditions is an important problem in the context of quantum algorithms with an interesting unfolding. It avails to test the ability of quantum walk models to provide efficient algorithms from the theoretical side and means to implement quantum walks in laboratories from the practical side. In this paper, we rigorously prove that the recent-proposed staggered quantum walk model provides an efficient quantum search on the two-dimensional lattice, if the reflection operators associated with the graph tessell…
The staggered quantum walk (SQW) model is defined by partitioning the graph into cliques, which are called polygons. We analyze the role that the size of the polygon intersection plays on the dynamics of SQWs on graphs. We introduce two processes (intersection reduction and intersection expansion), that change the number of vertices in some intersection of polygons, and we compare the behavior of the SQW on the reduced or expanded graph in relation to the SQW on the original graph. We describe how the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the evolution operators relate to each other. This processes …
Coin and scattering are the two major formulations for discrete quantum walks models, each believed to have its own advantages in different applications. Although they are related in some cases, it was an open question their equivalence in arbitrary topologies. Here we present a general construction for the two models for any graph and also for position dependent transition amplitudes. We then prove constructively their unitary equivalence. Defining appropriate projector operators, we moreover show how to obtain the probabilities for one model from the evolution of the other.
In this work we introduce the concept of a quantum walk on a hypergraph. We show that the staggered quantum walk model is a special case of a quantum walk on a hypergraph.
In this paper, we study Grover's search algorithm focusing on continuous-time quantum walk on graphs. We propose an alternative optimization approach to Grover's algorithm on graphs that can be summarized as follows: instead of finding specific graph topologies convenient for the related quantum walk, we fix the graph topology and vary the underlying graph Laplacians. As a result, we search for the most appropriate analytical structure on graphs endowed with fixed topologies yielding better search outcomes. We discuss strategies to investigate the optimality of Grover's algorithm and provide a…
We analyze the equivalence between discrete-time coined quantum walks and Szegedy's quantum walks. We characterize a class of flip-flop coined models with generalized Grover coin on a graph $Γ$ that can be directly converted into Szegedy's model on the subdivision graph of $Γ$ and we describe a method to convert one model into the other. This method improves previous results in literature that need to use the staggered model and the concept of line graph, which are avoided here.
Many-particles quantum walks of particles obeying Bose statistics moving on graphs of various topologies are introduced. A single coin tossing commands the conditional shift operation over the whole graph. Vertices particle densities, the mean values of the phase space variables, second order spatial correlation and counting statistics are evaluated and simulated. Evidence of an universal dynamics is presented.

Quantum walks have received a great deal of attention recently because they can be used to develop new quantum algorithms and to simulate interesting quantum systems. In this work, we focus on a model called staggered quantum walk, which employs advanced ideas of graph theory and has the advantage of including the most important instances of other discrete-time models. The evolution operator of the staggered model is obtained from a tessellation cover, which is defined in terms of a set of partitions of the graph into cliques. It is important to establish the minimum number of tessellations re…
Quantum Stochastic Walks (QSW) allow for a generalization of both quantum and classical random walks by describing the dynamic evolution of an open quantum system on a network, with nodes corresponding to quantum states of a fixed basis. We consider the problem of quantum state discrimination on such a system, and we solve it by optimizing the network topology weights. Finally, we test it on different quantum network topologies and compare it with optimal theoretical bounds.
We consider one-dimensional quantum walks in optical linear networks with synthetically introduced disorder and tunable system parameters allowing for the engineered realization of distinct topological phases. The option to directly monitor the walker's probability distribution makes this optical platform ideally suited for the experimental observation of the unique signatures of the one-dimensional topological Anderson transition. We analytically calculate the probability distribution describing the quantum critical walk in terms of a (time staggered) spin polarization signal and propose a co…
We report on the observation of quantum criticality forming at the transition point between topological Anderson insulator phases in a one-dimensional photonic quantum walk with spin. The walker's probability distribution reveals a time-staggered profile of the dynamical spin-susceptibility, recently suggested as a smoking gun signature for topological Anderson criticality in the chiral symmetry class AIII. Controlled breaking of phase coherence removes the signal, revealing its origin in quantum coherence.
Staggered quantum walks on graphs are based on the concept of graph tessellation and generalize some well-known discrete-time quantum walk models. In this work, we address the class of 2-tessellable quantum walks with the goal of obtaining an eigenbasis of the evolution operator. By interpreting the evolution operator as a quantum Markov chain on an underlying multigraph, we define the concept of quantum detailed balance, which helps to obtain the eigenbasis. A subset of the eigenvectors is obtained from the eigenvectors of the double discriminant matrix of the quantum Markov chain. To obtain …
Continuous-time quantum walks (CTQWs) provide a valuable model for quantum transport, universal quantum computation and quantum spatial search, among others. Recently, the empowering role of new degrees of freedom in the Hamiltonian generator of CTQWs, which are the complex phases along the loops of the underlying graph, was acknowledged for its interest in optimizing or suppressing transport on specific topologies. We argue that the quantum-classical distance, a figure of merit which was introduced to capture the difference in dynamics between a CTQW and its classical, stochastic counterpart,…
Dynamical evolution of systems with sparse Hamiltonians can always be recognized as continuous time quantum walks (CTQWs) on graphs. In this paper, we analyze the short time asymptotics of CTQWs. In recent studies, it was shown that for the classical diffusion process the short time asymptotics of the transition probabilities follows power laws whose exponents are given by the usual combinatorial distances of the nodes. Inspired by this result, we perform a similar analysis for CTQWs both in closed and open systems, including time-dependent couplings. For time-reversal symmetric coherent quant…
