Solving Linear Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) plays an important role in many applications. There are various numerical methods and solvers to obtain approximate solutions. However, few work about global error estimation can be found in the literature. In this paper, we first give a definition of the residual, based on the piecewise Hermit interpolation, which is a kind of the backward-error of ODE solvers. It indicates the reliability and quality of numerical solution. Secondly, the global error between the exact solution and an approximate solution is the forward error and a bound of it can be given by using the backward-error. The examples in the paper show that our estimate works well for a large class of ODE models.
A new method for solving non-autonomous ordinary differential equations is proposed, the method achieves spectral accuracy. It is based on a new result which expresses the solution of such ODEs as an element in the so called $\star$-algebra. This algebra is equipped with a product, the $\star$-product, which is the integral over the usual product of two bivariate distributions. Expanding the bivariate distributions in bases of Legendre polynomials leads to a discretization of the $\star$-product and this allows for the solution to be approximated by a vector that is obtained by solving a linea…
Traditional solvers for delay differential equations (DDEs) are designed around only a single method and do not effectively use the infrastructure of their more-developed ordinary differential equation (ODE) counterparts. In this work we present DelayDiffEq, a Julia package for numerically solving delay differential equations (DDEs) which leverages the multitude of numerical algorithms in OrdinaryDiffEq for solving both stiff and non-stiff ODEs, and manages to solve challenging stiff DDEs. We describe how compiling the ODE integrator within itself, and accounting for discontinuity propagation,…
This work is devoted to the obtaining of a new numerical scheme based in quadrature formulas for the Lebesgue-Stieltjes integral for the approximation of Stieltjes ordinary differential equations. This novel method allows us to numerically approximate models based in Stieltjes ordinary differential equations for which no explicit solution is known. We prove several theoretical results related to the consistency, convergence and stability of the numerical method. We also obtain the explicit solution of the Stieltjes linear ordinary differential equation, and we use it to validate the numerical …
It is well known that second order homogeneous linear ordinary differential equations with slowly varying coefficients admit slowly varying phase functions. This observation underlies the Liouville-Green method and many other techniques for the asymptotic approximation of the solutions of such equations. It is also the basis of a recently developed numerical algorithm that, in many cases of interest, runs in time independent of the magnitude of the equation's coefficients and achieves accuracy on par with that predicted by its condition number. Here we point out that a large class of second or…
In this paper we introduce a procedure, based on the method of equivariant moving frames, for formulating continuous Galerkin finite element schemes that preserve the Lie point symmetries of initial value problems for ordinary differential equations. Our methodology applies to projectable and non-projectable symmetry group actions, to ordinary differential equations of arbitrary order, and finite element approximations of arbitrary polynomial degree. Several examples are included to illustrate various features of the symmetry-preserving process. We summarise extensive numerical experiments sho…
We describe a set of Gaussian Process based approaches that can be used to solve non-linear Ordinary Differential Equations. We suggest an explicit probabilistic solver and two implicit methods, one analogous to Picard iteration and the other to gradient matching. All methods have greater accuracy than previously suggested Gaussian Process approaches. We also suggest a general approach that can yield error estimates from any standard ODE solver.
Numerically solving ordinary differential equations (ODEs) is a naturally serial process and as a result the vast majority of ODE solver software are serial. In this manuscript we developed a set of parallelized ODE solvers using extrapolation methods which exploit "parallelism within the method" so that arbitrary user ODEs can be parallelized. We describe the specific choices made in the implementation of the explicit and implicit extrapolation methods which allow for generating low overhead static schedules to then exploit with optimized multi-threaded implementations. We demonstrate that wh…
In this paper we consider utilizing a residual neural network (ResNet) to solve ordinary differential equations. Stochastic gradient descent method is applied to obtain the optimal parameter set of weights and biases of the network. We apply forward Euler, Runge-Kutta2 and Runge-Kutta4 finite difference methods to generate three sets of targets training the ResNet and carry out the target study. The well trained ResNet behaves just as its counterpart of the corresponding one-step finite difference method. In particular, we carry out (1) the architecture study in terms of number of hidden layer…
We present a highly scalable strategy for developing mesh-free neuro-symbolic partial differential equation solvers from existing numerical discretizations found in scientific computing. This strategy is unique in that it can be used to efficiently train neural network surrogate models for the solution functions and the differential operators, while retaining the accuracy and convergence properties of state-of-the-art numerical solvers. This neural bootstrapping method is based on minimizing residuals of discretized differential systems on a set of random collocation points with respect to the…
