This paper proposes computationally efficient algorithms to maximize the energy efficiency in multi-carrier wireless interference networks, by a suitable allocation of the system radio resources, namely the transmit powers and subcarrier assignment. The problem is formulated as the maximization of the system Global Energy-Efficiency subject to both maximum power and minimum rate constraints. This leads to a challenging non-convex fractional problem, which is tackled through an interplay of fractional programming, learning, and game theory. The proposed algorithmic framework is provably convergent and has a complexity linear in both the number of users and subcarriers, whereas other available solutions can only guarantee a polynomial complexity in the number of users and subcarriers. Numerical results show that the proposed method performs similarly as other, more complex, algorithms.
The increasingly dense deployments of wireless CSMA networks arising from applications of Internet-of-things call for an improvement to mitigate the interference among simultaneous transmitting wireless devices. For cost efficiency and backward compatibility with legacy transceiver hardware, a simple approach to address interference is by appropriately configuring the carrier sensing thresholds in wireless CSMA protocols, particularly in dense wireless networks. Most prior studies of the configuration of carrier sensing thresholds are based on a simplified conflict graph model, whereas this pa…
This work calls into question a substantial body of past work on CSMA wireless networks. In the majority of studies on CSMA wireless networks, a contention graph is used to model the carrier sensing relationships (CS) among links. This is a 0-1 model in which two links can either sense each other completely or not. In real experiments, we observed that this is generally not the case: the CS relationship between the links are often probabilistic and can vary dynamically over time. This is the case even if the distance between the links is fixed and there is no drastic change in the environment.…
The fairness of IEEE 802.11 wireless networks (including Wireless LAN and Ad-hoc networks) is hard to predict and control because of the randomness and complexity of the MAC contentions and dynamics. Moreover, asymmetric channel conditions such as those caused by capture and channel errors often lead to severe unfairness among stations. In this paper we propose a novel distributed scheduling algorithm that we call VLS, for ``{\em variable-length scheduling}'', that provides weighted fairness to all stations despite the imperfections of the MAC layer and physical channels. Distinct features of …
In this paper, we present an efficient resource allocation with user discrimination framework for 5G Wireless Systems to allocate multiple carriers resources among users with elastic and inelastic traffic. Each application running on the user equipment (UE) is assigned an application utility function. In the proposed model, different classes of user groups are considered and users are partitioned into different groups based on the carriers coverage area. Each user has a minimum required application rate based on its class and the type of its application. Our objective is to allocate multiple c…
A 60 GHz wireless Gigabit Ethernet (G.E.) communication system is developed at IETR. As the 60 GHz radio link operates only in a single-room configuration, an additional Radio over Fibre (RoF) link is used to ensure the communications in all the rooms of a residential environment. The realized system covers 2 GHz bandwidth. Due to the hardware constraints, a symbol rate at 875 Mbps is attained using simple single carrier architecture. In the baseband (BB) processing block, an original byte/frame synchronization process is designed to provide a smaller value of the preamble missing detection an…
The rapid increasing demand of wireless transmission has incurred mobile broadband to continuously evolve through multiple frequency bands, massive antennas and other multi-stream processing schemes. Together with the improved data transmission rate, the power consumption for multi-carrier transmission and processing is proportionally increasing, which contradicts with the energy efficiency requirements of 5G wireless systems. To meet this challenge, multi carrier power amplifier (MCPA) technology, e.g., to support multiple carriers through a single power amplifier, is widely deployed in pract…
This paper investigates a new class of carrier-sense multiple access (CSMA) protocols that employ deep reinforcement learning (DRL) techniques for heterogeneous wireless networking, referred to as carrier-sense deep-reinforcement learning multiple access (CS-DLMA). Existing CSMA protocols, such as the medium access control (MAC) of WiFi, are designed for a homogeneous network environment in which all nodes adopt the same protocol. Such protocols suffer from severe performance degradation in a heterogeneous environment where there are nodes adopting other MAC protocols. This paper shows that DR…
In this paper, we present the performance of different broadcast schemes for multihop sensor networks based on mathematical modeling. In near future many applications will demand multicast (Broadcast) communication feature from the sensor networks. This broadcast feature does not use virtual carrier sensing but relies on physical carrier sensing to reduce collision. For this paper, we analyze the different broadcast schemes for multihop wireless sensor networks and also calculated the achievable throughput.
Cooperative techniques have been shown to significantly improve the performance of wireless systems. Despite being a mature technology in single communication link scenarios, their implementation in wider, and practical, networks poses several challenges which have not been fully identified and understood so far. In this two-part paper, the implementation of cooperative communications in non-centralized ad hoc networks with sensing-based channel access is extensively discussed. Both analysis and simulation are employed to provide a clear understanding of the mutual influence between the link l…
This work is the second of a two-part series of papers on the effectiveness of cooperative techniques in non-centralized carrier sense-based ad hoc wireless networks. While Part I extensively discussed reactive cooperation, characterized by relayed transmissions triggered by failure events at the intended receiver, Part II investigates in depth proactive solutions, in which the source of a packet exploits channel state information to preemptively coordinate with relays in order to achieve the optimal overall rate to the destination. In particular, this work shows by means of both analysis and …

Wireless LAN is currently enjoying rapid deployment in University departments, business offices, hospitals and homes. It becomes an inexpensive technology and allows multiple numbers of the households to simultaneously access the internet while roaming about the house. In the present work, the design and development of a wireless LAN is highlighted which utilizes direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) technology at 900MHz RF carrier frequency in its physical layer. This provides enormous security in the physical layer and hence it is very difficult to hack or jam the network. The installation …
Beaconless position-based forwarding protocols have recently evolved as a promising solution for packet forwarding in wireless sensor networks. However, as the node density grows, the overhead incurred in the process of relay selection grows significantly. As such, end-to-end performance in terms of energy and latency is adversely impacted. With the motivation of developing a packet forwarding mechanism that is tolerant to node density, an alternative position-based protocol is proposed in this paper. In contrast to existing beaconless protocols, the proposed protocol is designed such that it …
This paper investigates a new class of carrier-sense multiple access (CSMA) protocols that employ deep reinforcement learning (DRL) techniques, referred to as carrier-sense deep-reinforcement learning multiple access (CS-DLMA). The goal of CS-DLMA is to enable efficient and equitable spectrum sharing among a group of co-located heterogeneous wireless networks. Existing CSMA protocols, such as the medium access control (MAC) of WiFi, are designed for a homogeneous network in which all nodes adopt the same protocol. Such protocols suffer from severe performance degradation in a heterogeneous env…
A natural basis for the detection of a wireless random reactive jammer (RRJ) is the perceived violation by the detector (typically located at the access point (AP)) of the carrier sensing protocol underpinning many wireless random access protocols (e.g., WiFi). Specifically, when the wireless medium is perceived by a station to be busy, a carrier sensing compliant station will avoid transmission while a RRJ station will often initiate transmission. However, hidden terminals (HTs), i.e., activity detected by the AP but not by the sensing station, complicate the use of carrier sensing as the bas…
We quantify the throughput capacity of wireless multi-hop networks with several medium access schemes. We analyze pure ALOHA scheme where simultaneous transmitters are dispatched according to a uniform Poisson distribution and exclusion schemes where simultaneous transmitters are dispatched according to an exclusion rule such as node coloring and carrier sense based schemes. We consider both no-fading and standard Rayleigh fading channel models. Our results show that, under no-fading, slotted ALOHA can achieve at least one-third (or half under Rayleigh fading) of the throughput capacity of nod…
Mobile Communication marketplace has stressed that "content is king" ever since the initial footsteps for Next Generation Networks like 3G, 3GPP, IP Multimedia subsystem (IMS) services. However, many carriers and content providers have struggled to drive revenue for content services, primarily due to current limitations of certain types of desirable content offerings, simplistic billing models, and the inability to support flexible pricing, charging and settlement. Unlike wire line carriers, wireless carriers have a limit to the volume of traffic they can carry, bounded by the finite wireless …
This paper presents results on the achievable spectral efficiency and on the energy efficiency for a wireless multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) link operating at millimeter wave frequencies (mmWave) in a typical 5G scenario. Two different single-carrier modem schemes are considered, i.e., a traditional modulation scheme with linear equalization at the receiver, and a single-carrier modulation with cyclic prefix, frequency-domain equalization and FFT-based processing at the receiver; these two schemes are compared with a conventional MIMO-OFDM transceiver structure. Our analysis jointly tak…
This paper presents a method to seamlessly extend the coverage of energy supply field for wireless sensor networks in order to free sensors from wires and batteries, where the multi-point scheme is employed to overcome path-loss attenuation, while the carrier shift diversity is introduced to mitigate the effect of interference between multiple wave sources. As we focus on the energy transmission part, sensor or communication schemes are out of scope of this paper. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed wireless energy transmission, this paper conducts indoor experiments in which we compar…
In this work, we evaluate local capacity of wireless ad hoc networks with several medium access protocols and identify the most optimal protocol. We define local capacity as the average information rate received by a receiver randomly located in the network. We analyzed grid pattern protocols where simultaneous transmitters are positioned in a regular grid pattern, pure ALOHA protocols where simultaneous transmitters are dispatched according to a uniform Poisson distribution and exclusion protocols where simultaneous transmitters are dispatched according to an exclusion rule such as node color…
In this paper, we investigate the transmission range assignment for N wireless nodes located on a line (a linear wireless network) for broadcasting data from one specific node to all the nodes in the network with minimum energy. Our goal is to find a solution that has low complexity and yet performs close to optimal. We propose an algorithm for finding the optimal assignment (which results in the minimum energy consumption) with complexity O(N^2). An approximation algorithm with complexity O(N) is also proposed. It is shown that, for networks with uniformly distributed nodes, the linear-time a…
Widely deployed wireless network devices use a shared medium to communicate among mobile nodes. WLAN uses virtual carrier sensing mechanism to solve issues like hidden node problem, while this mechanism is vulnerable to DOS attacks e.g., RTS attack. This paper discusses RTS (Request to Send) attack where malicious nodes reserve the medium unnecessarily for overdue period of time. The effects of such attacks on performance of WLAN are observed, proposed a mitigation technique to restore network performance and analyzed the improvement in performance.
Uplink scheduling/resource allocation under the single-carrier FDMA constraint is investigated, taking into account the queuing dynamics at the transmitters. Under the single-carrier constraint, the problem of MaxWeight scheduling, as well as that of determining if a given number of packets can be served from all the users, are shown to be NP-complete. Finally, a matching-based scheduling algorithm is presented that requires only a polynomial number of computations per timeslot, and in the case of a system with large bandwidth and user population, provably provides a good delay (small-queue) p…
This paper empirically validates battery-less sensor activation via wireless energy transmission to release sensors from wires and batteries. To seamlessly extend the coverage and activate sensor nodes distributed in any indoor environment, we proposed multi-point wireless energy transmission with carrier shift diversity. In this scheme, multiple transmitters are employed to compensate path-loss attenuation and orthogonal frequencies are allocated to the multiple transmitters to avoid the destructive interference that occurs when the same frequency is used by all transmitters. In our previous …
Precise indoor localization of moving targets is a challenging activity which cannot be easily accomplished without combining different sources of information. In this sense, the combination of different data sources with an appropriate filter might improve both positioning and tracking performance. This work proposes an algorithm for hybrid positioning in Wireless Sensor Networks based on data fusion of UWB and inertial information. A constant-gain Steady State Kalman Filter is used to bound the complexity of the system, simplifying its implementation on a typical low-power WSN node. The perf…
The design of Wireless Information and Power Transfer (WIPT) has so far relied on an oversimplified and inaccurate linear model of the energy harvester. In this paper, we depart from this linear model and design WIPT considering the rectifier nonlinearity. We develop a tractable model of the rectifier nonlinearity that is flexible enough to cope with general multicarrier modulated input waveforms. Leveraging that model, we motivate and introduce a novel WIPT architecture relying on the superposition of multi-carrier unmodulated and modulated waveforms at the transmitter. The superposed WIPT wa…
This paper proposes a complete IFoF system architecture derived from simplified IEEE802.15.3c PHY layer proposal to successfully ensure near 1 Gbps on the air interface. The system architecture utilizes low complexity baseband processing modules. The byte/frame synchronization technique is designed to provide a high value of preamble detection probability and a very small value of the false detection probability. Conventional Reed-Solomon RS (255, 239) coding is used for Channel Forward Error Correction (FEC). Good communication link quality and Bit Error Rate (BER) results at 875 Mbps are ach…
In this paper, we investigate the performance gains of adapting pilot spacing and power for Carrier Aggregation (CA)-OFDM systems in nonstationary wireless channels. In current multi-band CA-OFDM wireless networks, all component carriers use the same pilot density, which is designed for poor channel environments. This leads to unnecessary pilot overhead in good channel conditions and performance degradation in the worst channel conditions. We propose adaptation of pilot spacing and power using a codebook-based approach, where the transmitter and receiver exchange information about the fading c…
This article explains how to construct a sheaf model for passing traffic through a wireless network with a single channel carrier sense multiple access/collision detection (CSMA/CD) media access model.
This paper presents an approach for low-cost simulation modeling for application development for wireless sensor networks. Computational complexity of simulating wireless sensor networks can be very high and as such must be carefully managed. Application-level code prototyping with reasonable accuracy and fidelity can be accomplished through simulation that models only the effects of the wireless and distributed computations which materialize mainly as delay and drop for the messages being exchanged among the motes. This approach employs the abstraction that all physical or communication and p…
We consider a wireless network with a set of transmitter-receiver pairs, or links, that share a common channel, and address the problem of emptying finite traffic volume from the transmitters in minimum time. This, so called, minimum-time scheduling problem has been proved to be NP-hard in general. In this paper, we study a class of minimum-time scheduling problems in which the link rates have a particular structure consistent with the assumed environment and topology. We show that global optimality can be reached in polynomial time and derive optimality conditions. Then we consider a more gen…
To cope with the increasing demand of wireless communication services multi-carrier systems are being used. Radio resources are very limited and efficient usages of these resources are inevitable to get optimum performance of the system. Paging channel is a low-bandwidth channel and one of the most important channels on which system performance depends significantly. Therefore it is vulnerable to even moderate overloads. In this paper, an efficient paging algorithm, Concurrent Search, is proposed for efficient use of paging channel in Multi- carrier CDMA system instead of existing sequential s…
Spectral efficiency is a key design issue for all wireless communication systems. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a very well-known technique for efficient data transmission over many carriers overlapped in frequency. Recently, several papers have appeared which describe spectrally efficient variations of multi-carrier systems where the condition of orthogonality is dropped. Proposed techniques suffer from two weaknesses: Firstly, the complexity of generating the signal is increased. Secondly, the signal detection is computationally demanding. Known methods suffer either u…
Coloring is used in wireless networks to improve communication efficiency, mainly in terms of bandwidth, energy and possibly end-to-end delays. In this paper, we define the h-hop node coloring problem, with h any positive integer, adapted to two types of applications in wireless networks. We specify both general mode for general applications and strategic mode for data gathering applications. We prove that the associated decision problem is NP-complete. We then focus on grid topologies that constitute regular topologies for large or dense wireless networks. We consider various transmission rang…
This paper provides solutions for virtualizing C-RANs wireless resources and sharing them between multiple mobile network operators (MNOs). The proposed solutions dynamically allocate wireless resources to users who subscribe to MNOs across the network. In addition, the proposed solutions maintain a high level of isolation between different MNOs, provide efficient and fair resource utilization, enable different scheduling polices, and manage intercell interference (ICI). An optimal solution is formulated as a combinatorial problem, which is computationally expensive. Consequently, two low-comp…
We study the fair coexistence of scheduled and random access transmitters sharing the same frequency channel. Interest in coexistence is topical due to the need for emerging unlicensed LTE technologies to coexist fairly with WiFi. However, this interest is not confined to LTE/WiFi as coexistence is likely to become increasingly commonplace in IoT networks and beyond 5G. In this article we show that mixing scheduled and random access incurs and inherent throughput/delay cost, the cost of heterogeneity. We derive the joint proportional fair rate allocation, which casts useful light on current LT…
Underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) is becoming an attractive technology for underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) since it offers high-speed communication links. Although UOWC overcomes the drawbacks of acoustic and radio frequency communication channels such as high latency and low data rate, yet, it has its own limitations. One of the major limitations of UOWC is its limited transmission range which demands to develop a multi-hop network with efficient routing protocols. Currently, the routing protocols for UOWSNs are centralized having high complexity and large end-to-en…
Wireless Multiuser receivers suffer from their relatively higher computational complexity that prevents widespread use of this technique. In addition, one of the main characteristics of multi-channel communications that can severely degrade the performance is the inconsistent and low values of SNR that result in high BER and poor channel capacity. It has been shown that the computational complexity of a multiuser receiver can be reduced by using the transformation matrix (TM) algorithm [4]. In this paper, we provide quantification of SNR based on the computational complexity of TM algorithm. W…
Interference at the radio receiver is a key source of degradation in quality of service of wireless communication systems. This paper presents a unified framework for OFDM/FBMC interference characterization and analysis in asynchronous environment. Multi-user interference is caused by the timing synchronization errors which lead to the destruction of the orthogonality between subcarriers. In this paper, we develop a theoretical analysis of the asynchronous interference considering the multi-path effects on the interference signal. We further propose an accurate model for interference that prov…
Carrier sense multiple access collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) is the basic scheme upon which access to the shared medium is regulated in many wireless networks. With CSMA/CA a station willing to start a transmission has first to find the channel free for a given duration otherwise it will go into \emph{backoff}, i.e. refraining for transmitting for a randomly chosen delay. Performance analysis of a wireless network employing CSMA/CA regulation is not an easy task: except for simple network configuration analytical solution of key performance indicators (KPI) cannot be obtained hence one has to r…
To date, most analysis of WLANs has been focused on their operation under saturation condition. This work is an attempt to understand the fundamental performance of WLANs under unsaturated condition. In particular, we are interested in the delay performance when collisions of packets are resolved by an exponential backoff mechanism. Using a multiple-vacation queueing model, we derive an explicit expression for packet delay distribution, from which necessary conditions for finite mean delay and delay jitter are established. It is found that under some circumstances, mean delay and delay jitter …
Far-field Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) has attracted significant attention in the last decade. Recently, channel-adaptive waveforms have been shown to significantly increase the DC power level at the output of the rectifier. However the design of those waveforms is generally computationally complex and does not lend itself easily to practical implementation. We here propose a low-complexity channel-adaptive multisine waveform design whose performance is very close to that of the optimal design. Performance evaluations confirm the benefits of the new design in various rectifier topologies.

We consider a many-to-one wireless architecture for federated learning at the network edge, where multiple edge devices collaboratively train a model using local data. The unreliable nature of wireless connectivity, together with constraints in computing resources at edge devices, dictates that the local updates at edge devices should be carefully crafted and compressed to match the wireless communication resources available and should work in concert with the receiver. Thus motivated, we propose SGD-based bandlimited coordinate descent algorithms for such settings. Specifically, for the wirel…
In this paper, we consider a down-link transmission of multicell virtualized wireless networks (VWNs) where users of different service providers (slices) within a specific region are served by a set of base stations (BSs) through orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA). In particular, we develop a joint BS assignment, sub-carrier and power allocation algorithm to maximize the network throughput, while satisfying the minimum required rate of each slice. Under the assumption that each user at each transmission instance can connect to no more than one BS, we introduce the user-assoc…

Last year, IEEE 802.11 Extremely High Throughput Study Group (EHT Study Group) was established to initiate discussions on new IEEE 802.11 features. Coordinated control methods of the access points (APs) in the wireless local area networks (WLANs) are discussed in EHT Study Group. The present study proposes a deep reinforcement learning-based channel allocation scheme using graph convolutional networks (GCNs). As a deep reinforcement learning method, we use a well-known method double deep Q-network. In densely deployed WLANs, the number of the available topologies of APs is extremely high, and …
This paper develops a distributed algorithm for rate allocation in wireless networks that achieves the same throughput region as optimal centralized algorithms. This cross-layer algorithm jointly performs medium access control (MAC) and physical-layer rate adaptation. The paper establishes that this algorithm is throughput-optimal for general rate regions. In contrast to on-off scheduling, rate allocation enables optimal utilization of physical-layer schemes by scheduling multiple rate levels. The algorithm is based on local queue-length information, and thus the algorithm is of significant pr…
In the literature, asymptotic studies of multi-hop wireless network capacity often consider only centralized and deterministic TDMA (time-division multi-access) coordination schemes. There have been fewer studies of the asymptotic capacity of large-scale wireless networks based on CSMA (carrier-sensing multi-access), which schedules transmissions in a distributed and random manner. With the rapid and widespread adoption of CSMA technology, a critical question is that whether CSMA networks can be as scalable as TDMA networks. To answer this question and explore the capacity of CSMA networks, we…
To enable low-power and low-complexity wireless monitoring, an improved circuit design of Analog Joint Source Channel Coding (AJSCC) is proposed for wireless sensor nodes. This innovative design is based on Analog Divider Blocks (ADB) with tunable spacing between AJSCC levels. The ADB controls the switching between two types of Voltage Controlled Voltage Sources (VCVS). LTSpice simulations were performed to evaluate the performance of the circuit, and the power consumption and circuit complexity of this new ADB-based design were compared with our previous parallel-VCVS design. It is found that…
Wireless energy transfer (WET) is a green enabler of low-power Internet of Things (IoT). Therein, traditional optimization schemes relying on full channel state information (CSI) are often too costly to implement due to excessive energy consumption and high processing complexity. This letter proposes a simple, yet effective, energy beamforming scheme that allows a multi-antenna power beacon (PB) to fairly power a set of IoT devices by only relying on the first-order statistics of the channels. In addition to low complexity, the proposed scheme performs favorably as compared to benchmarking sch…
To address the problem of unsupervised outlier detection in wireless sensor networks, we develop an approach that (1) is flexible with respect to the outlier definition, (2) computes the result in-network to reduce both bandwidth and energy usage,(3) only uses single hop communication thus permitting very simple node failure detection and message reliability assurance mechanisms (e.g., carrier-sense), and (4) seamlessly accommodates dynamic updates to data. We examine performance using simulation with real sensor data streams. Our results demonstrate that our approach is accurate and imposes a…
Collisions with hidden terminals is a major cause of performance degradation in 802.11 and likewise wireless networks. Carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) is utilized to avoid collisions at the cost of spatial reuse. This report studies receiver design to mitigate interference from hidden terminals. A wireless channel model with correlated fading in time is assumed. A message-passing approach is proposed, in which a receiver can successfully receive and decode partially overlapping transmissions from two sources rather than treating undesired one as thermal noise. …
Enabling coordination between products from different vendors is a key characteristic of the design philosophy behind future wireless communication networks. As an example, different devices may have different implementations, leading to different user experiences. A similar story emerges when devices running different physical and link layer protocols share frequencies in the same spectrum in order to maximize the system-wide spectral efficiency. In such situations, coordinating multiple interfering devices presents a significant challenge not only from an interworking perspective (as a resul…
This article introduces a metric for performance evaluation of medium access schemes in wireless ad hoc networks known as local capacity. Although deriving the end-to-end capacity of wireless ad hoc networks is a difficult problem, the local capacity framework allows us to quantify the average information rate received by a receiver node randomly located in the network. In this article, the basic network model and analytical tools are first discussed and applied to a simple network to derive the local capacity of various medium access schemes. Our goal is to identify the most optimal scheme an…
We consider a fundamental problem concerning the deployment of a wireless robotic network: to fulfill various end-to-end performance requirements, a "sufficient" number of robotic relays must be deployed to ensure that links are of acceptable quality. Prior work has not addressed how to find this number. We use the properties of Carrier Sense Multiple Access (CSMA) based wireless communication to derive an upper bound on the spacing between any transmitter-receiver pair, which directly translates to a lower bound on the number of robots to deploy. We focus on SINR-based performance requirement…
We consider the problem of link scheduling for wireless networks with fading channels, where the link rates are varying with time. Due to the high computational complexity of the throughput optimal scheduler, we provide a low complexity greedy link scheduler GFS, with provable performance guarantees. We show that the performance of our greedy scheduler can be analyzed using the Local Pooling Factor (LPF) of a network graph, which has been previously used to characterize the stability of the Greedy Maximal Scheduling (GMS) policy for networks with static channels. We conjecture that the perform…
