The QCD axion beyond the classical level: A lattice study

The axion is a hypothetical elementary particle postulated by the Peccei-Quinn theory to resolve the strong CP problem in QCD. If axions exist and have low mass, they are a candidate for dark matter as well. So far our knowledge of the properties of the QCD axion rests on semi-classical arguments and effective theory. In this work we perform, for the first time, a fully dynamical investigation of the Peccei-Quinn theory, focussing on the axion mass, by simulating the theory on the lattice. The results of the simulation are found to be in conflict with present axion phenomenology.

QCD topology and axion's properties from Wilson twisted mass lattice simulations

We present the results on topological susceptibility and chiral observables in $N_f=2+1+1$ QCD for temperature range $120<T<600$ MeV. The lattice simulations are performed with Wilson twisted mass fermions at physical pion, strange and charm masses. In high-$T$ region $T\gtrsim 300$ MeV the chiral observables are shown to follow leading order Griffith analyticity, and the topological susceptibility follows a power-law decay as in the instanton dilute gas models. QCD axion and topological susceptibility in chiral effective Lagrangian models at finite temperature

In this work we compute the axion mass and, from this (exploiting a well-known relation), we also derive an expression for the QCD topological susceptibility in the finite-temperature case, both below and above the chiral phase transition at $T_c$, making use of a chiral effective Lagrangian model which includes the axion, the scalar and pseudoscalar mesons and implements the $U(1)$ axial anomaly of the fundamental theory. Recent progress on QCD inputs for axion phenomenology

The properties of the QCD axion are strictly related to the dependence of strong interactions on the topological parameter theta. We present a determination of the topological properties of QCD for temperatures up to around 600 MeV, obtained by lattice QCD simulations with 2+1 flavors and physical quark masses. We show how several properties of the QCD axion can be extracted at high precision using only first principle QCD computations. By combining NLO results obtained in chiral perturbation theory with recent Lattice QCD results the full axion potential, its mass and the coupling to photons can be reconstructed with percent precision. Axion couplings to nucleons can also be derived reliably, with uncertainties smaller than ten percent. QCD topology with electromagnetic fields and the axion-photon coupling

The introduction of non-orthogonal electric and magnetic fields in the QCD vacuum enhances the weight of topological sectors with a nonzero topological charge. Topology (and axion's properties) from lattice QCD with a dynamical charm

We present results on QCD with four dynamical flavors in the temperature range $0.9 \lesssim T/T_c \lesssim 2$. We have performed lattice simulations with Wilson fermions at maximal twist and measured the topological charge with gluonic and fermionic methods. The topological susceptibility in finite temperature QCD and axion cosmology

We study the topological susceptibility in 2+1 flavor QCD above the chiral crossover transition temperature using Highly Improved Staggered Quark action and several lattice spacings, corresponding to temporal extent of the lattice, $N_τ=6,8,10$ and $12$. Visible matter in the current Universe is a consequence of the phase transition of the strong force, quantum chromodynamics (QCD).
