The first steps in defining tropicalization for spherical varieties have been taken in the last few years. There are two parts to this theory: tropicalizing subvarieties of homogeneous spaces and tropicalizing their closures in spherical embeddings. In this paper, we obtain a new description of spherical tropicalization that is equivalent to the other theories. This works by embedding in a toric variety, tropicalizing there, and then applying a particular piecewise projection map. We use this theory to prove that taking closures commutes with the spherical tropicalization operation.
The homogeneous spectrum of a multigraded finitely generated algebra (in the sense of Brenner-Schröer) always admits an embedding into a toric variety that is not necessarily separated, a so-called toric prevariety. In order to have a convenient framework to study the tropicalization of homogeneous spectra we propose a tropicalization procedure for toric prevarieties and study its basic properties. With these tools at hand, we prove a generalization of Payne's and Foster--Gross--Payne's tropical limit theorem for divisorial schemes.
A degeneration of a singular curve on a toric surface, called a tropicalization, was constructed by E. Shustin. He classified the degeneration of 1-cuspidal curves using polyhedral complexes called tropical curves. In this paper, we define a tropical version of a 1-tacnodal curve, that is, a curve having exactly one singular point whose topological type is $A_3$, and by applying the tropicalization method, we classify tropical curves which correspond to 1-tacnodal curves.
We give a combinatorial way to locate non-displaceable Lagrangian toric fibers on compact toric manifolds. By taking the intersection of certain tropicalizations coming from combinatorial data of a moment polytope, we locate all strongly bulk-balanced fibers introduced in [FOOOSurv]. As an application, we show that every bulk-balanced fiber defined in [FOOOToric2] is strongly bulk-balanced. Thus, the method indeed detects the positions of all non-displaceable fibers that can be detected by Lagrangian Floer theory developed in [FOOOToric1] and [FOOOToric2].
We extend tropicalization and tropical compactification of subvarieties of algebraic tori to subvarieties of spherical homogeneous spaces. Given a tropical compactification of a subvariety, we show that the support of the colored fan of the ambient spherical variety agrees with the tropicalization of the subvariety. The proof is based on our equivariant version of the attening by blow-up theorem. We provide many examples.
We study the tropicalizations of analytic subvarieties of normal toric varieties over complete non-archimedean valuation fields. We show that a Zariski closed analytic subvariety of a normal toric variety is algebraic if its tropicalization is a finite union of polyhedra. Previously, the converse direction was known by the theorem of Bieri and Groves. Over the field of complex numbers, Madani, L. Nisse, and M. Nisse proved similar results for analytic subvarieties of tori.
Recently, a theory for the tropicalization of a spherical homogeneous space $G/H$ was developed by Tassos Vogiannou. We extend his ideas to define the tropicalization of a spherical $G/H$-embedding. This generalizes the construction of tropicalization of toric varieties. We also extend an alternate definition of spherical tropicalization via Gröbner theory developed by Kiumars Kaveh and Christopher Manon and show that the two notions of extended tropicalization coincide.
We study the Berkovich analytification of the space of genus $0$ logarithmic stable maps to a toric variety $X$ and present applications to both algebraic and tropical geometry. On algebraic side, insights from tropical geometry give two new geometric descriptions of this space of maps -- (1) as an explicit toroidal modification of $\overline M_{0,n}\times X$ and (2) as a tropical compactification in a toric variety. On the combinatorial side, we prove that the tropicalization of the space of genus $0$ logarithmic stable maps coincides with the space of tropical stable maps, giving a large new…
The tropicalization of an algebraic variety X is a combinatorial shadow of X, which is sensitive to a closed embedding of X into a toric variety. Given a good embedding, the tropicalization can provide a lot of information about X. We construct two types of these good embeddings for Mumford curves: Fully faithful tropicalizations, which are embeddings such that the tropicalization admits a section to the associated Berkovich space $X^{an}$ of X, and smooth tropicalizations. We also show that a smooth curve that admits a smooth tropicalization is necessarily a Mumford curve. Our key tool is a v…
Given a smooth complex toric variety we will compare real Lagerberg forms and currents on its tropicalization with invariant complex forms and currents on the toric variety. Our main result is a correspondence theorem which identifies the cone of invariant closed positive currents on the complex toric variety with closed positive currents on the tropicalization. In a subsequent paper, this correspondence will be used to develop a Bedford-Taylor theory of plurisubharmonic functions on the tropicalization.
We compute toric degenerations arising from the tropicalization of the full flag varieties $\mathcal{F}\ell_4$ and $\mathcal{F}\ell_5$ embedded in a product of Grassmannians. For $\mathcal{F}\ell_4$ and $\mathcal{F}\ell_5$ we compare toric degenerations arising from string polytopes and the FFLV polytope with those obtained from the tropicalization of the flag varieties. We also present a general procedure to find toric degenerations in the cases where the initial ideal arising from a cone of the tropicalization of a variety is not prime.
We show how to equip the cone complexes of toroidal embeddings with additional structure that allows to define a balancing condition for weighted subcomplexes. We then proceed to develop the foundations of an intersection theory on cone complexes including push-forwards, intersections with tropical divisors, and rational equivalence. These constructions are shown to have an algebraic interpretation: Ulirsch's tropicalizations of subvarieties of toroidal embeddings carry natural multiplicities making them tropical cycles, and the induced tropicalization map for cycles respects push-forwards, in…
Let $X$ be a spherical variety. We show that Tevelev and Vogiannou's tropicalization map from $X$ to its tropicalization factors through the Berkovich analytification $X^{\text{an}}$, as in the case for toric varieties. Furthermore we show that the tropicalization is a strong deformation retraction of $X^{\text{an}}$. We also give a strong deformation retraction of Thuillier's analytification $X^{\beth}$ onto a subspace described using the colored fan of $X$.
Given an integral scheme X over a non-archimedean valued field k , we construct acuniversal closed embedding of X into a k-scheme equipped with a model over the field with one element (a generalization of a toric variety). An embedding into such an ambient space determines a tropicalization of X by earlier work of the authors, and we show that the set-theoretic tropicalization of X with respect to this universal embedding is the Berkovich analytification of X. Moreover, using the scheme-theoretic tropicalization, we obtain a tropical scheme $Trop_{univ}(X)$ whose T-points give the analytificat…
The mirror of a toric orbifold is an affine curve called the mirror curve. In this paper, firstly, we recall the basic tools in tropical geometry and give a definition of the mirror curve. Then we calculate the tropical spine of the mirror curve for a smooth toric Calabi-Yau 3-fold near the large radius limit. Finally, we recall a special kind of real algebraic curves called the cyclic-M curve and show that under some special choices of parameters near the large radius limit, the mirror curve is a cyclic-M curve. Applying Mikhalkin's result of cyclic-M curves, we show that the mirror curve is …
We study whether a given tropical curve $Γ$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ can be realized as the tropicalization of an algebraic curve whose non-archimedean skeleton is faithfully represented by $Γ$. We give an affirmative answer to this question for a large class of tropical curves that includes all trivalent tropical curves, but also many tropical curves of higher valence. We then deduce that for every metric graph $G$ with rational edge lengths there exists a smooth algebraic curve in a toric variety whose analytification has skeleton $G$, and the corresponding tropicalization is faithful. Our approach…
Tropical geometry is sensitive to embeddings of algebraic varieties inside toric varieties. The purpose of this paper is to advertise tropical modifications as a tool to locally repair bad embeddings of plane curves, allowing the re-embedded tropical curve to better reflect the geometry of the input curve. Our approach is based on the close connection between analytic curves (in the sense of Berkovich) and tropical curves. We investigate the effect of these tropical modifications on the tropicalization map defined on the analytification of the given curve. Our study is motivated by the case of…
The notion of higher order dual varieties of a projective variety is a natural generalization of the classical notion of projective duality, introduced by Piene in 1983. In this paper we study higher order dual varieties of projective toric embeddings. We compute the degree of the second dual variety of a smooth toric threefold in geometric and combinatorial terms, and we classify smooth 2-jet spanned projective embeddings of smooth threefolds whose second dual variety has dimension less than expected. We also describe the tropicalization of the k-th dual variety of an equivariantly embedded (…
An algebraic variety is said to have the $A_k$-property if any $k$ points are contained in some common affine open neighbourhood. A theorem of Włodarczyk states that a normal variety has the $A_2$-property if and only if it admits a closed embedding into a toric variety. Spherical varieties can be regarded as a generalization of toric varieties, but they do not have the $A_2$-property in general. We provide a combinatorial criterion for the $A_k$-property of spherical varieties by combining the theory of bunched rings with the Luna-Vust theory of spherical embeddings.
Let $E_1,\ldots,E_k$ be a collection of linear series on an algebraic variety $X$ over $\mathbb{C}$. That is, $E_i\subset H^0(X, \mathcal{L}_i)$ is a finite dimensional subspace of the space of regular sections of line bundles $ \mathcal{L}_i$. Such a collection is called overdetermined if the generic system \[ s_1 = \ldots = s_k = 0, \] with $s_i\in E_i$ does not have any roots on $X$. In this paper we study solvable systems which are given by an overdetermined collection of linear series. Generalizing the notion of a resultant hypersurface we define a consistency variety $R\subset \prod_{i=1…
