We study a rank based univariate two-sample distribution-free test. The test statistic is the difference between the average of between-group rank distances and the average of within-group rank distances. This test statistic is closely related to the two-sample Cramér-von Mises criterion. They are different empirical versions of a same quantity for testing the equality of two population distributions. Although they may be different for finite samples, they share the same expected value, variance and asymptotic properties. The advantage of the new rank based test over the classical one is its ease to generalize to the multivariate case. Rather than using the empirical process approach, we provide a different easier proof, bringing in a different perspective and insight. In particular, we apply the Hájek projection and orthogonal decomposition technique in deriving the asymptotics of the proposed rank based statistic. A numerical study compares power performance of the rank formulation test with other commonly-used nonparametric tests and recommendations on those tests are provided. Lastly, we propose a multivariate extension of the test based on the spatial rank.
Testing uniformity of a sample supported on the hypersphere is one of the first steps when analysing multivariate data for which only the directions (and not the magnitudes) are of interest. In this work, a projection-based Cramér-von Mises test of uniformity on the hypersphere is introduced. This test can be regarded as an extension of the well-known Watson test of circular uniformity to the hypersphere. The null asymptotic distribution of the test statistic is obtained and, via numerical experiments, shown to be tractable and practical. A novel study on the uniformity of the distribution of …
The von Mises-Fisher distribution is one of the most widely used probability distributions to describe directional data. Finite mixtures of von Mises-Fisher distributions have found numerous applications. However, the likelihood function for the finite mixture of von Mises-Fisher distributions is unbounded and consequently the maximum likelihood estimation is not well defined. To address the problem of likelihood degeneracy, we consider a penalized maximum likelihood approach whereby a penalty function is incorporated. We prove strong consistency of the resulting estimator. An Expectation-Maxi…
Robust estimation of location and concentration parameters for the von Mises-Fisher distribution is discussed. A key reparametrisation is achieved by expressing the two parameters as one vector on the Euclidean space. With this representation, we first show that maximum likelihood estimator for the von Mises-Fisher distribution is not robust in some situations. Then we propose two families of robust estimators which can be derived as minimisers of two density power divergences. The presented families enable us to estimate both location and concentration parameters simultaneously. Some properti…
Orthonormal matrices play an important role in reduced-rank matrix approximations and the analysis of matrix-valued data. A matrix Bingham-von Mises-Fisher distribution is a probability distribution on the set of orthonormal matrices that includes linear and quadratic terms, and arises as a posterior distribution in latent factor models for multivariate and relational data. This article describes rejection and Gibbs sampling algorithms for sampling from this family of distributions, and illustrates their use in the analysis of a protein-protein interaction network.
We introduce some new classes of unimodal rotational invariant directional distributions, which generalize von Mises-Fisher distribution. We propose three types of distributions, one of which represents axial data. For each new type we provide formulae and short computational study of parameter estimators by the method of moments and the method of maximum likelihood. The main goal of the paper is to develop the goodness of fit test to detect that sample entries follow one of the introduced generalized von Mises--Fisher distribution based on the maximum entropy principle. We use $k$th nearest n…
Discrete and continuous standard windowing are revisited and a a new taper is introduced, which is derived from the normal circular distribution by von Mises. Both the continuous-time and the discrete-time windows are considered, and their spectra obtained. A brief comparison with further classical window families is performed in terms of their properties in the spectral domain. These windows can be used in spectral analysis, and in particular, in the design of FIR (finite impulse response) filters as an alternative to the Kaiser window
The methods measuring the departure between observation and the model were reviewed. The following statistics were applied on two experimental data sets: Chi-Squared, Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Anderson-Darling, Wilks-Shapiro, and Jarque-Bera. Both investigated sets proved not to be normal distributed. The Grubbs test identified one outlier and after its removal the normality of the set of 205 chemical active compounds was accepted. The second data set proved not to have any outliers. Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic is less affected by the existence of outliers (positive variation expressed as percentag…

In this work, we generalize the Cramér-von Mises statistic via projection-averaging to obtain a robust test for the multivariate two-sample problem. The proposed test is consistent against all fixed alternatives, robust to heavy-tailed data and minimax rate optimal against a certain class of alternatives. Our test statistic is completely free of tuning parameters and is computationally efficient even in high dimensions. When the dimension tends to infinity, the proposed test is shown to have comparable power to the existing high-dimensional mean tests under certain location models. As a by-pro…
