The rapid evolution in mobile devices and communication technology has increased the number of mobile device users dramatically. The mobile device has replaced many other devices and is used to perform many tasks ranging from establishing a phone call to performing critical and sensitive tasks like money payments. Since the mobile device is accompanying a person most of his time, it is highly probably that it includes personal and sensitive data for that person. The increased use of mobile devices in daily life made mobile systems an excellent target for attacks. One of the most important attacks is phishing attack in which an attacker tries to get the credential of the victim and impersonate him. In this paper, analysis of different types of phishing attacks on mobile devices is provided. Mitigation techniques - anti-phishing techniques - are also analyzed. Assessment of each technique and a summary of its advantages and disadvantages is provided. At the end, important steps to guard against phishing attacks are provided. The aim of the work is to put phishing attacks on mobile systems in light, and to make people aware of these attacks and how to avoid them
Phishing in mobile applications is a relevant threat with successful attacks reported in the wild. In such attacks, malicious mobile applications masquerade as legitimate ones to steal user credentials. In this paper we categorize application phishing attacks in mobile platforms and possible countermeasures. We show that personalized security indicators can help users to detect phishing attacks and have very little deployment cost. Personalized security indicators, however, rely on the user alertness to detect phishing attacks. Previous work in the context of website phishing has shown that us…

Identity theft might be conducted using phishing techniques that aims to trick the user to provide his credentials in a well-organized tactic. Efforts have been done towards fighting against phishing attacks and hence identify theft. However, most of these efforts are either computationally exhaustive to the electronic device or depend on a third p…
Phishing is a type of attack in which cyber criminals tricks the victims to steal their personal and financial data. It has become an organized criminal activity. Spoofed emails claiming to be from legitimate source are crafted in a way to lead victims to reveal their personal, financial data by misdirecting them to the counterfeit website. This research paper presents a novel approach to combat the Phishing attacks. An approach is proposed where user will retrieve the one time password by SMS or by alternate email address. After receiving the one time password the web server will create an en…
With the generalization of mobile communication systems, solicitations of all kinds in the form of messages and emails are received by users with increasing proportion of malicious ones. They are customized to pass anti-spam filters and ask the person to click or to open the joined dangerous attachment. Current filters are very inefficient against spear phishing emails. It is proposed to improve the existing filters by taking advantage of user own analysis and feedback to detect all kinds of phishing emails. The method rests upon an interface displaying different warnings to receivers. Analysi…
In the growing world of the internet, the number of ways to obtain crucial data such as passwords and login credentials, as well as sensitive personal information has expanded. Page impersonation, often known as phishing, is one method of obtaining such valuable information. Phishing is one of the most straightforward forms of cyberattack for hackers and one of the simplest for victims to fall for. It can also provide hackers with everything they need to get access to their target's personal and corporate accounts. Such websites do not offer a service, but instead, gather personal information …
The email system is the central battleground against phishing and social engineering attacks, and yet email providers still face key challenges to authenticate incoming emails. As a result, attackers can apply spoofing techniques to impersonate a trusted entity to conduct highly deceptive phishing attacks. In this work, we study email spoofing to answer three key questions: (1) How do email providers detect and handle forged emails? (2) Under what conditions can forged emails penetrate the defense to reach user inbox? (3) Once the forged email gets in, how email providers warn users? Is the wa…

Mobile computing devices have been used broadly to store, manage and process sensitive or even mission critical data. To protect confidentiality of data stored in mobile devices, major mobile operating systems use full disk encryption, which relies on traditional encryption mechanisms and requires that decryption keys will not be disclosed. This however, is not necessarily true, since an active attacker may coerce victims for decryption keys. Plausibly deniable encryption (PDE) can defend against such a coercive attacker by disguising the true secret key with a decoy key. Leveraging concept of…

Text phish messages, referred to as Smishing is a type of social engineering attack where fake text messages are created, and used to lure users into responding to those messages. These messages aim to obtain user credentials, install malware on the phones, or launch smishing attacks. They ask users to reply to their message, click on a URL that redirects them to a phishing website, or call the provided number. Thousands of mobile users are affected by smishing attacks daily. Drawing inspiration by the works of Tu et al. (USENIX Security, 2019) on Robocalls and Tischer et al. (IEEE Symposium o…
In this paper, we propose an adversary model to facilitate forensic investigations of mobile devices (e.g. Android, iOS and Windows smartphones) that can be readily adapted to the latest mobile device technologies. This is essential given the ongoing and rapidly changing nature of mobile device technologies. An integral principle and significant constraint upon forensic practitioners is that of forensic soundness. Our adversary model specifically considers and integrates the constraints of forensic soundness on the adversary, in our case, a forensic practitioner. One construction of the advers…
Mobile authentication is indispensable for preventing unauthorized access to multi-touch mobile devices. Existing mobile authentication techniques are often cumbersome to use and also vulnerable to shoulder-surfing and smudge attacks. This paper focuses on designing, implementing, and evaluating TouchIn, a two-factor authentication system on multi-touch mobile devices. TouchIn works by letting a user draw on the touchscreen with one or multiple fingers to unlock his mobile device, and the user is authenticated based on the geometric properties of his drawn curves as well as his behavioral and …
In developing regions a substantial number of users rely on legacy and ultra-low-cost mobile devices. Unfortunately, many of these devices are not equipped to run the standard authentication or identity apps that are available for smartphones. Increasingly, apps that display Quick Response (QR) codes are being used to communicate personal credentials (e.g., Covid-19 vaccination certificates). This paper describes a novel interface for QR code credentials that is compatible with legacy mobile devices. Our solution, which we have released under open source licensing, allows Web Application Enabl…
We have designed a tiered security system for mobile devices where each security tier holds user-defined security triggers and actions. It has a friendly interface that allows users to easily define and configure the different circumstances and actions they need according to context. The system can be set up and activated from any browser or directly on the mobile device itself. When the security system is operated from a Web site or server, its configuration can be readily shared across multiple devices. When operated directly from the mobile device, no server is needed for activation. Many d…
This paper presents a comprehensive investigation of authentication schemes for smart mobile devices. We start by providing an overview of existing survey articles published in the recent years that deal with security for mobile devices. We also provide a classification of countermeasures into four types of categories, incl…
All mobile devices are energy-constrained. They use batteries that allows using the device for a limited amount of time. In general, energy attacks on mobile devices are denial of service (DoS) type of attacks. While previous studies have analyzed the energy attacks in servers, no existing work has analyzed the energy attacks on mobile devices. As such, in this paper, we present the first systematic study on how to exploit the energy attacks on smartphones. In particular, we explore energy attacks from the following aspect: hardware components, software resources, and network communications th…
The emergence of mobile applications to execute sensitive operations has brought a myriad of security threats to both enterprises and users. In order to benefit from the large potential in smartphones there is a need to manage the risks arising from threats, while maintaining an easy interface for the users. In this paper we investigate the use of Trusted Platform Model (TPM) 2.0 to develop a secure application for smartphones using Windows Phone 8.1. In particular, we suggest a framework based on remote attestation as a proxy to authenticate remote services, where the device is associated to …
We demonstrate how the multitude of sensors on a smartphone can be used to construct a reliable hardware fingerprint of the phone. Such a fingerprint can be used to de-anonymize mobile devices as they connect to web sites, and as a second factor in identifying legitimate users to a remote server. We present two implementations: one based on analyzing the frequency response of the speakerphone-microphone system, and another based on analyzing device-specific accelerometer calibration errors. Our accelerometer-based fingerprint is especially interesting because the accelerometer is accessible vi…
In this paper, we propose to identify compromised mobile devices from a network administrator's point of view. Intuitively, inadvertent users (and thus their devices) who download apps through untrustworthy markets are often allured to install malicious apps through in-app advertisement or phishing. We thus hypothesize that devices sharing a similar set of apps will have a similar probability of being compromised, resulting in the association between a device being compromised and apps in the device. Our goal is to leverage such associations to identify unknown compromised devices (i.e., devic…
Mobile device authentication has been a highly active research topic for over 10 years, with a vast range of methods having been proposed and analyzed. In related areas such as secure channel protocols, remote authentication, or desktop user authentication, strong, systematic, and increasingly formal threat models have already been established and are used to qualitatively and quantitatively compare different methods. Unfortunately, the analysis of mobile device authentication is often based on weak adversary models, suggesting overly optimistic results on their respective security. In this ar…
Mobile devices have become an indispensable component of modern life. Their high storage capacity gives these devices the capability to store vast amounts of sensitive personal data, which makes them a high-value target: these devices are routinely stolen by criminals for data theft, and are increasingly viewed by law enforcement agencies as a valuable source of forensic data. Over the past several years, providers have deployed a number of advanced cryptographic features intended to protect data on mobile devices, even in the strong setting where an attacker has physical access to a device. M…
With the proliferation of mobile devices, cloud-based photo sharing and searching services are becoming common due to the mobile devices' resource constrains. Meanwhile, there is also increasing concern about privacy in photos. In this work, we present a framework \ourprotocolNSP, which enables cloud servers to provide privacy-preserving photo sharing and search as a service to mobile device users. Privacy-seeking users can share their photos via our framework to allow only their authorized friends to browse and search their photos using resource-bounded mobile devices. This is achieved by our…

Currently, Android malware detection is mostly performed on server side against the increasing number of malware. Powerful computing resource provides more exhaustive protection for app markets than maintaining detection by a single user. However, apart from the applications provided by the official market, apps from unofficial markets and third-party resources are always causing serious security threats to end-users. Meanwhile, it is a time-consuming task if the app is downloaded first and then uploaded to the server side for detection, because the network transmission has a lot of overhead. …
For the sake of protecting data privacy and due to the rapid development of mobile devices, e.g., powerful central processing unit (CPU) and nascent neural processing unit (NPU), collaborative machine learning on mobile devices, e.g., federated learning, has been envisioned as a new AI approach with broad application prospects. However, the learning process of the existing federated learning platforms rely on the direct communication between the model owner, e.g., central cloud or edge server, and the mobile devices for transferring the model update. Such a direct communication may be energy i…
