We study the spin-polarized transport through a triple quantum dot molecule weakly coupled to ferromagnetic leads. The analysis is performed by means of the real-time diagrammatic technique including up to the second order of perturbation expansion with respect to the tunnel coupling. The emphasis is put on the impact of dark states on spin-resolved transport characteristics. It is shown that the interplay of coherent population trapping and cotunneling processes results in a highly nontrivial behavior of the tunnel magnetoresistance, which can take negative values. Moreover, a super-Poissonian shot noise is found in transport regimes where the current is blocked by the formation of dark states, which can be additionally enhanced by spin-dependence of tunneling processes, depending on magnetic configuration of the device. The mechanisms leading to those effects are thoroughly discussed.
We derive a formalism describing quantum-coherent features of spin-polarized charge current through a partially-polarized spin triplet defect in a $\textit{transverse}$ magnetic field. We predict distinct few-milli-tesla-dc magnetoresistance signatures that identify a $\textit{single}$ spin-triplet center's character and reveal the orientation of the spin triplet's zero-field splitting axis relative to the magnetic contact's polarization. For example, in 4H-SiC the single $(hh)$, $(kk)$, $(hk)$, and $(kh)$ divacancies are all distinct. Spin-polarized current flow efficiently polarizes the spin…
Electronic transport through a two-path triple-quantum-dot system with two source leads and one drain is studied. By separating the conductance of the two double dot paths, we are able to observe double dot and triple dot physics in transport and study the interaction between the paths. We observe channel blockade as a result of inter-channel Coulomb interaction. The experimental results are understood with the help of a theoretical model which calculates the parameters of the system, the stability regions of each state and the full dynamical transport in the triple dot resonances.
We study double quantum dots in a Ge/SiGe heterostructure and test their maturity towards singlet-triplet ($S-T_0$) qubits. We demonstrate a large range of tunability, from two single quantum dots to a double quantum dot. We measure Pauli spin blockade and study the anisotropy of the $g$-factor. We use an adjacent quantum dot for sensing charge transitions in the double quantum dot at interest. In conclusion, Ge/SiGe possesses all ingredients necessary for building a singlet-triplet qubit.
Circularly polarized optical excitation is used to demonstrate the efficient injection of spin-polarized excitons to individual self-assembled CdSe quantum dots in ZnSe barrier. The exciton spin-transfer is studied by means of polarization-resolved single dot spectroscopy performed in magnetic field applied in Faraday configuration. Detailed analysis of the neutral exciton photoluminescence spectra reveals the presence of exciton spin relaxation during its lifetime in a quantum dot. This process is seen for both nonmagnetic dots and those containing single Mn$^{2+}$ ions. Taking this into acco…
In the semi-conductor double quantum dot singlet-triplet qubit architecture, the decoherence caused by the qubit's charge environment poses a serious obstacle in the way towards large scale quantum computing. The effects of the charge decoherence can be mitigated by operating the qubit in the so called sweet spot regions where it is insensitive to electrical noise. In this paper, we propose singlet-triplet qubits based on two quantum dots of different sizes. Such asymmetric double dot systems allow the implementation of exchange gates with controllable exchange splitting $J$ operated in the do…
A strong coupling between an electronic cavity and a quantum dot has been recently demonstrated [Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 166603 (2015)] and described in a comprehensive theoretical framework [Phys. Rev. B 96, 235431 (2017)]. Here, we focus on the signatures that demonstrate the cavity's impact on inelastic singlet-triplet transport through the dot. We find the same transport signatures in the experiment as predicted by the model that describes the coupled dot--cavity system. Interestingly, a lowest-order treatement of the coupling to the electronic leads on top of an exact diagonalisation of the…
We prepare a triple quantum dot with a separate contact lead to each dot to study Pauli spin blockade in the tunnel-coupled three dots in a row. We measure the tunneling current flowing between the center dot and either the left or right dot with the left and right leads as a common source and the center lead as a drain. In the biased stability diagram, we establish Pauli spin blockade in the respective neighboring dots, with features similarly obtained in double quantum dot systems. We further realize Pauli spin blockade with two different conditions by tuning the inter-dot coupling gates: st…
We experimentally demonstrate quantum coherent dynamics of a triple-dot-based multi-electron hybrid qubit. Pulsed experiments show that this system can be conveniently initialized, controlled, and measured electrically, and has good coherence time as compared to gate time. Furthermore, the current multi-electron hybrid qubit has an operation frequency that is tunable in a wide range, from 2 to about 15 GHz. We provide qualitative understandings of the experimental observations by mapping it onto a three-electron system, and compare it with the double dot hybrid qubit and the all-exchange tripl…
We report highly tunable control of holes in Ge/Si core/shell nanowires (NWs). We demonstrate the ability to create single quantum dots (QDs) of various sizes, with low hole occupation numbers and clearly observable excited states. For the smallest dot size we observe indications of single-hole occupation. Moreover, we create double and triple tunnel-coupled quantum dot arrays. In the double quantum dot configuration we observe Pauli spin blockade (PSB). These results open the way to perform hole spin qubit experiments in these devices.
We study theoretically phonon-induced spin dynamics of two electrons confined in a self-assembled double quantum dot. We calculate the transition rates and time evolution of occupations for the spin-triplet and spin-singlet states. We characterize the relative importance of various relaxation channels as a function of the electric and magnetic fields. The simulations are based on a model combining the eight-band k.p method and configuration-interaction approach. We show that the electron g-factor mismatch between the Zeeman doublets localized on different dots opens a relatively fast triplet-s…
In the present work we theoretically study thermoelectric transport and heat transfer in a junction including a $T$-shaped double quantum dot coupled to nonmagnetic electrodes and supplemented with a third dot in a parallel configuration. We focus on the combined effect of Coulomb interactions and quantum interference occurring in the $T$-shaped portion of the considered triple quantum dot on the thermoelectric electron transport. The transport through the system is studied within the Coulomb blockade regime in the limit of strong intra-dot interactions between electrons beyond the linear resp…
Spin-polarized transport through a double quantum dot system attached to a common superconducting lead and two ferromagnetic electrodes (fork geometry) is investigated theoretically. The key objective of the analysis is to describe the influence of electrodes' ferromagnetism on the Andreev tunneling. Both direct and crossed Andreev tunneling processes are considered, in general. The other objective is a detailed analysis of the role of Coulomb interaction and its impact on the Andreev tunneling processes.
Spin-orbit mediated phonon relaxation in a two-dimensional quantum dot is investigated using different confining potentials. Elliptical harmonic oscillator and cylindrical well results are compared to each other in the case of a two-electron GaAs quantum dot subjected to a tilted magnetic field. The lowest energy set of two-body singlet and triplet states are calculated including spin-orbit and magnetic effects. These are used to calculate the phonon induced transition rate from the excited triplet to the ground state singlet for magnetic fields up to where the states cross. The roll of the cu…
A two-dimensional arrangement of quantum dots with finite inter-dot tunnel coupling provides a promising platform for studying complicated spin correlations as well as for constructing large-scale quantum computers. Here, we fabricate a tunnel-coupled triangular triple quantum dot with a novel gate geometry in which three dots are defined by positively biasing the surface gates. At the same time, the small area in the center of the triangle is depleted by negatively biasing the top gate placed above the surface gates. The size of the small center depleted area is estimated from the Aharonov-Bo…
Strong electron correlations are discussed for the three capacitively coupled quantum dots, each of which is connected to a separate pair of electrodes. The finite-$U$ mean field slave boson approach is used. The analysis is carried out for both repulsive and attractive intra- and inter-dot interactions. Depending on the ratio and the sign of interaction parameters and occupation, either charge ordered states or different spin, spin-charge and charge Kondo resonances arise.
We propose an implementation of a singlet-only spin qubit in a GaAs-based triple quantum dot with a (1,4,1) charge occupation. In the central multi-electron dot, the interplay between Coulomb interaction and an out-of-plane magnetic field creates an energy spectrum with a tunable singlet-triplet splitting, which can be exploited to create a six-particle singlet-only qubit with a qubit splitting that can straightforwardly be tuned over tens of $μ$eV by adjusting the external magnetic field. We confirm the full exchange-based electric control of the qubit and demonstrate its superior coherence p…
We consider theoretically a magnetic impurity spin driven by polarized electrons tunneling through a double quantum dot system. Spin blockade effect and spin conservation in the system make the magnetic impurity sufficiently interact with each transferring electron. As a results, a single collected electron carries information about spin change of the magnetic impurity. The scheme may develop all electrical manipulation of magnetic atoms by means of single electrons, which is significant for the implementation of scalable logical gates in information processing systems.
A fundamental question in quantum transport is how quantum coherence influences charge transfer through nanostructures. We address this issue for linear triple quantum dots by comparison of a Lindblad density matrix description with a Pauli rate equation approach and analyze the corresponding zero-frequency counting statistics for coherent and sequential charge tunneling, respectively. The impact of decaying coherences of the density matrix due to dephasing is also studied. Our findings reveal that the sensitivity to coherence shown by shot noise and skewness, in particular in the limit of lar…
We predict a new type of the negative-$U$ Anderson impurity formed in a triple quantum dot. The two dots of the system behave as a negative-$U$ impurity preferring zero or double electron occupancy rather than single occupancy, and the third dot stabilizes the attractive interaction of $U < 0$ via Coulomb repulsion. Using a bosonization method, we find that the system has the two different phases of massive or vanishing charge fluctuations between the two occupancies at low temperature, which are equivalent with the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases of the anisotropic Kondo model, res…
Electron pairing due to a repulsive Coulomb interaction in a triple quantum dot (TQD) is experimentally studied. It is found that electron pairing in two dots of a TQD is mediated by the third dot, when the third dot strongly couples with the other two via Coulomb repulsion so that the TQD is in the twofold degenerate ground states of (1, 0, 0) and (0, 1, 1) charge configurations. Using the transport spectroscopy that monitors electron transport through each individual dot of a TQD, we analyze how to achieve the degeneracy in experiments, how the degeneracy is related to electron pairing, and …
Quantum dot arrays provide a promising platform for quantum information processing. For universal quantum simulation and computation, one central issue is to demonstrate the exhaustive controllability of quantum states. Here, we report the addressable manipulation of three single electron spins in a triple quantum dot using a technique combining electron-spin-resonance and a micro-magnet. The micro-magnet makes the local Zeeman field difference between neighboring spins much larger than the nuclear field fluctuation, which ensures the addressable driving of electron-spin-resonance by shifting …
