We use the binary module of the MESA code to study the evolution of an evolved binary system where we assume that a main sequence companion removes the outskirts of the envelope of an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star by launching jets, and explore the characteristics of this grazing envelope evolution (GEE). We base our assumption that jets launched by the secondary star remove a substantial fraction of the outskirts of the envelope of an AGB star on earlier hydrodynamical simulations. We find that in many cases that we study, but not in all cases, the binary system experiences the GEE rather than entering the common envelope phase, under our assumptions of jet-driven mass removal. To prevent the common envelope phase, we assume the secondary star may accrete a large amount of mass in a short time while avoiding rapid inflation, the feasibility of which requires further study. Because of our simplifying assumptions we cannot yet present the parameter space for the GEE. Although the incorporation of the GEE into population synthesis numerical codes requires further studies of the GEE, we conclude that analyses of population synthesis studies of evolved binary stars should include the GEE.
We conduct three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations, and show that when a secondary star launches jets while performing spiral-in motion into the envelope of a giant star, the envelope is inflated, some mass is ejected by the jets, and the common envelope phase is postponed. We simulate this grazing envelope evolution (GEE) under the assumption that the secondary star accretes mass from the envelope of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star and launches jets. In these simulations we do not yet include the gravitational energy that is released by the spiraling-in binary system. Neither do w…
We show that substantially enhanced mass loss at periastron passages, as is expected in the grazing envelope evolution (GEE), can compensate for the circularization effect of the tidal interaction in binary systems composed of an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star and a main sequence secondary star. By numerically integrating the equations of motion we show that under our assumptions the binary system can maintain its high eccentricity as the AGB star evolves toward the post-AGB phase. Our results can explain the high eccentricity of some post-AGB intermediate binaries (post-AGBIBs), i.e., tho…
We study the grazing envelope evolution (GEE), where a secondary star, which orbits the surface of a giant star, accretes mass from the giant envelope and launches jets. We conduct simulations of the GEE with different half-opening angles and velocities, and simulate the onset phase and the spiralling-in phase. We discuss the resulting envelope structure and the outflow geometry. We find in the simulations of the onset phase with narrow jets that a large fraction of the ejected mass outflows along the polar directions. The mass ejected at these directions has the fastest velocity and the highe…
Close stellar binary systems by grazing envelope evolution
I argue that the high percentage of PNe that are shaped by jets show that main sequence stars in binary systems can accrete mass at a high rate from an accretion disk and launch jets. Not only this allows jets to shape PNe, but this also points to the importance of jets in other types of binary systems and in other processes. These processes include the grazing envelope evolution (GEE), the common envelope evolution (CEE), and the efficient conversion of kinetic energy to radiation in outflows. As well, the jets point to the possibility that many systems launch jets as they enter the CEE, poss…
We simulate the evolution of binary systems with a massive primary star of 15Mo where we introduce an enhanced mass loss due to jets that the secondary star might launch, and find that in many cases the enhanced mass loss brings the binary system to experience the grazing envelope evolution (GEE) and form a progenitor of Type IIb supernova (SN IIb). The jets, the Roche lobe overflow (RLOF), and a final stellar wind remove most of the hydrogen-rich envelope, leaving a blue-compact SN IIb progenitor. In many cases without this jet-driven mass loss the system enters a common envelope evolution (C…
We simulate the evolution of eccentric binary systems in the frame of the grazing envelope evolution (GEE) channel for the formation of Type IIb supernovae (SNe IIb), and find that extra mass removal by jets increases the parameter space for the formation of SNe IIb in this channel. To explore the role of eccentricity and the extra mass removal by jets we use the stellar evolutionary code MESA binary. The initial primary and secondary masses are M1i=15Mo and M2i=2.5Mo. We examine initial semi-major axes of 600-1000Ro, and eccentricities of e=0-0.9. Both Roche lobe overflow (RLOF) and mass remo…
We present a study of the dependence of the mass-radius relation for DA white dwarf stars on the hydrogen envelope mass and the impact on the value of log g, and thus the determination of the stellar mass. We employ a set of full evolutionary carbon-oxygen core white dwarf sequences with white dwarf mass between 0.493 and 1.05 Msun. Computations of the pre-white dwarf evolution uncovers an intrinsic dependence of the maximum mass of the hydrogen envelope with stellar mass, i.e., it decreases when the total mass increases. We find that a reduction of the hydrogen envelope mass can lead to a red…

We report the discovery of a Neptune-size (R_p = 3.87 +/- 0.06 R_Earth) transiting circumbinary planet, Kepler-1661 b, found in the Kepler photometry. The planet has a period of ~175 days and its orbit precesses with a period of only 35 years. The precession causes the alignment of the orbital planes to vary, and the planet is in a transiting configuration only ~7% of the time as seen from Earth. As with several other Kepler circumbinary planets, Kepler-1661 b orbits close to the stability radius, and is near the (hot) edge of habitable zone. The planet orbits a single-lined, grazing eclipsing…
We report the discovery and confirmation of two new hot Jupiters discovered by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS): TOI 564 b and TOI 905 b. The transits of these two planets were initially observed by TESS with orbital periods of 1.651 d and 3.739 d, respectively. We conducted follow-up observations of each system from the ground, including photometry in multiple filters, speckle interferometry, and radial velocity measurements. For TOI 564 b, our global fitting revealed a classical hot Jupiter with a mass of $1.463^{+0.10}_{-0.096}\ M_J$ and a radius of $1.02^{+0.71}_{-0.29}\ R_…
We calculate the outward energy transport time by convection and photon diffusion in an inflated common envelope and find this time to be shorter than the envelope expansion time. We conclude therefore that most of the hydrogen recombination energy ends in radiation rather than in kinetic energy of the outflowing envelope. We use the stellar evolution code MESA and inject energy inside the envelope of an asymptotic giant branch star to mimic energy deposition by a spiraling-in stellar companion. During 1.7 years the envelope expands by a factor of more than 2. Along the entire evolution the co…

Tidal dissipation due to turbulent viscosity in the convective regions of giant stars plays an important role in shaping the orbits of pre-common envelope systems. Such systems are possible sources of transients and close compact binary systems that will eventually merge and produce detectable gravitational wave signals. Most previous studies of the onset of common envelope episodes have focused on circular orbits and synchronously rotating donor stars under the assumption that tidal dissipation can quickly spin up the primary and circularize the orbit before the binary reaches Roche-lobe over…
Luminous blue variables (LBVs) are hot, very luminous massive stars displaying large quasi-periodic variations in brightness, radius, and photospheric temperature, on timescales of years to decades. The physical origin of this variability, called S Doradus cycle after its prototype, has remained elusive. Here, we study the feedback of stellar wind mass-loss on the envelope structure in stars near the Eddington limit. We perform a time-dependent hydrodynamic stellar evolutionary calculation, applying a stellar wind mass-loss prescription with a temperature-dependence inspired by the predicted sy…
We present a characterization of the protostar embedded within the BHR7 dark cloud, based on both photometric measurements from the near-infrared to millimeter and interferometric continuum and molecular line observations at millimeter wavelengths. We find that this protostar is a Class 0 system, the youngest class of protostars, measuring its bolometric temperature to be 50.5~K, with a bolometric luminosity of 9.3~L$_{\odot}$. The near-infrared and \textit{Spitzer} imaging show a prominent dark lane from dust extinction separating clear bipolar outflow cavities. Observations of $^{13}$CO ($J=…
The characterization of exoplanets relies on that of their host star. However, stellar evolution models cannot always be used to derive the mass and radius of individual stars, because many stellar internal parameters are poorly constrained. Here, we use the probability density functions (PDFs) of directly measured parameters to derive the joint PDF of the stellar and planetary mass and radius. Because combining the density and radius of the star is our most reliable way of determining its mass, we find that the stellar (respectively planetary) mass and radius are strongly (respectively modera…
Several models have been introduced in order to explain the radius distribution in exoplanet radii observed by Fulton et al. (2017) with one peak at $\rm \sim 1.3 R_{\oplus} $ the other at $\rm \sim 2.4 R_{\oplus} $ and the minimum at $\rm \sim 1.75R_{\oplus} $. In this paper we focus on the hypothesis that the exoplanet size distribution is caused by stellar XUV-induced atmospheric loss. We evolve $10^{6}$ synthetic exoplanets by exposing them to XUV irradiation from synthetic ZAMS stars. For each planet we set a different interior composition which ranged from $\rm 100 \: wt\%$ Fe (very dens…
