The real Schur form (RSF) of a generic velocity gradient field $\nabla \mathbf{u}$ is exploited to expose the structures of flows, in particular our field decomposition resulting in two vorticities with only mutual linkage as the topological content of the global helicity (accordingly decomposed into two equal parts). The local transformation to RSF may indicate alternative (co)rotating frame(s) for specifying the objective argument(s) of the constitutive equation. When $\nabla \mathbf{u}$ is uniformly of RSF in a fixed Cartesian coordinate frame, i.e., $u_x = u_x(x,y)$ and $u_y = u_y(x,y)$, but $u_z = u_z(x,y,z)$, the model, with the decomposed vorticities both frozen-in to $\mathbf{u}$, is in between two-dimensional-three-component (2D3C) and 3D3C ones and may help curing the pathology in the helical 2D3C absolute equilibrium, making the latter effectively work in more realistic situations.
A semi-analytical algorithm is developed for simulating flows with the velocity gradient uniformly of the real Schur form. Computations for both decaying and driven cases are performed, exhibiting basic results for general conception and testing the specific notion of `helicity fastening flows', and, creating the Jiu-Gong/Ba-Gua (ditetragonal/octagonal) pattern of cyclones resembling northern circumpolar cluster of Jupiter.

In this paper we study the enstrophy transers in helical turbulence using direct numerical simulation. We observe that the helicity injection does not have significant effects on the inertial-range energy and helicity spectra ($\sim k^{-5/3}$) and fluxes (constants). We also calculate the separate contributions to enstrophy transfers via velocity to vorticity and vorticity to vorticity channels. There are four different enstrophy fluxes associated with the former channel or vorticity stretching, and one flux associated with the latter channel or vorticity advection. In the inertial range, the …

We discuss a mean-field theory of generation of large-scale vorticity in a rotating density stratified developed turbulence with inhomogeneous kinetic helicity. We show that the large-scale nonuniform flow is produced due to ether a combined action of a density stratified rotating turbulence and uniform kinetic helicity or a combined effect of a rotating incompressible turbulence and inhomogeneous kinetic helicity. These effects result in the formation of a large-scale shear, and in turn its interaction with the small-scale turbulence causes an excitation of the large-scale instability (known …
We study the dynamics and indications of the flows with all the eigenvalues of the velocity gradients being real, thus `lone', \textit{i.e.}, without forming the complex conjugate pairs associated to the swirls. A generic prototype is the `lone Schur flow (LSF)' whose velocity gradient tensor is uniformly of Schur form but free of complex eigenvalues. A (partial) integral-differential equation governing such LSF is established, and a semi-analytical algorithm is accordingly designed for computation. Simulated evolutions of example LSFs in 2- and 3-spaces show rich dynamics and vortical structu…
Pointwise zero velocity helicity density is shown not to prevent steady flows from acting as kinematic dynamos. We present numerical evidences that such flows can generate both small-scale magnetic fields as well as, by the magnetic $α$-effect or negative eddy diffusivity mechanisms, large-scale ones. The flows are constructed as curls of analytically defined space-periodic steady solenoidal flows, whose vorticity helicity (i.e., kinetic helicity) density is everywhere zero.
If the vorticity field of an ideal fluid is tangent to a foliation, additional conservation laws arise. For a class of zero-helicity vorticity fields the Godbillon-Vey (GV) invariant of foliations is defined and is shown to be an invariant purely of the vorticity, becoming a higher-order helicity-type invariant of the flow. GV non-zero gives both a global topological obstruction to steady flow and, in a particular form, a local obstruction. GV is interpreted as helical compression and stretching of vortex lines. Examples are given where the value of GV is determined by a set of distinguished c…
A vortex is intuitively recognized as the rotational/swirling motion of the fluids. However, an unambiguous and universally-accepted definition for vortex is yet to be achieved in the field of fluid mechanics, which is probably one of the major obstacles causing considerable confusions and misunderstandings in turbulence research. In our previous work, a new vector quantity which is called vortex vector was proposed to accurately describe the local fluid rotation and clearly display vortical structures. In this paper, the definition of the vortex vector, named Rortex here, is revisited from th…
It is shown that the helicity of three dimensional viscous incompressible flow can be identified with the overall linking of the fluid's initial vorticity to the expectation of a stochastic mean field limit. The relevant mean field limit is obtained by following the Lagrangian paths in the stochastic Hamiltonian interacting particle system of [S. Hochgerner, Proc. R. Soc. A 474:20180178].
We study the relaxation of a topologically non-trivial vortex braid with zero net helicity in a barotropic fluid. The aim is to investigate the extent to which the topology of the vorticity field -- characterized by braided vorticity field lines -- determines the dynamics, particularly the asymptotic behaviour under vortex reconnection in an evolution at high Reynolds numbers 25,000. Analogous to the evolution of braided magnetic fields in plasma, we find that the relaxation of our vortex braid leads to a simplification of the topology into large-scale regions of opposite swirl, consistent wit…
Euler and Navier-Stokes have variant systems with dynamical invariance of helicity and thus (weak) topological equivalence, allowing a strong `frozen-in' (to, or, dually, `Lie-carried' by the \textit{virtual} velocity $V$) formulation of the vorticity with a flavor of `inverse Helmholtz theorem'. We remark on the non-ideal (statistical) topological fluid mechanics (TFM) for (1) the Constantin-Iyer formulation of Navier-Stokes, (2) our own extension of the Gallavotti-Cohen type dynamical ensembles of modified Navier-Stokes with energy-helicity constraints and (3) the Galerkin truncated Euler, a…
The velocity gradient tensor for homogeneous, isotropic turbulence (HIT), with explicit consideration of local and non-local effects using a Schur decomposition
In this paper we have continued the calculations made recently concerning he generalization of the minimal coupling prescription. We have obtained the Navier-Stokes equation for the charged fluid embedded into an electromagnetic field. We have analyzed the wave feature of the fields. Wave equations for velocity and vorticity were obtained and gauge choices were discussed. In this paper we have studied the evolution of helicity and circulation from the Maxwell type formulation to the equations of a compressible fluid, charged in interaction with an electromagnetic field. We see that for both he…
Kinetic helicity (hereafter helicity) is defined by the correlation between the velocity and the flow-aligned vorticity. Helicity, as well as energy, is an inviscid invariant of the hydrodynamic equations. In contrast to energy, a measure of the turbulent intensity, turbulent helicity, representing right- and left-handed twist associated with a fluctuating motion, provides a measure of the structural or topological property of the fluctuation. The helicity effect on the turbulent transport can be analytically obtained in the framework of the multiple-scale renormalized perturbation expansion t…
A theory of an eroding "hairpin" vortex dipole structure in three dimensions is developed, extending our previous study of an axisymmetric eroding dipole without swirl. The hairpin is here similarly proposed as a model to produce large "self-stretching" of vorticity, with the possibility of finite-time blow-up. We derive a system of partial differential equations of "generalized" form, involving contour averaging of a locally two-dimensional Euler flow. We do not attempt here to solve the system exactly, but point out that non-existence of physically acceptable solutions would most probably be…
Fluxes of the magnetic helicity density play an important role in large-scale turbulent dynamos, allowing the growth of large-scale magnetic fields while overcoming catastrophic quenching. We show here, analytically, how several important types of magnetic helicity fluxes can arise from terms involving triple correlators of fluctuating fields in the helicity density evolution equation. For this, we assume incompressibility and weak inhomogeneity, and use a quasinormal closure approximation: fourth-order correlators are replaced by products of second-order ones, and the effect of the fourth-ord…
For an arbitrary velocity field $\mathbf{v}$ defined on a finite, fixed spatial domain, we find the closest rigid-body velocity field $\mathbf{v}_{RB}$ to $\mathbf{v}$ in the $L^2$ norm. The resulting deformation velocity component, $\mathbf{v}_{d}=\mathbf{v-\mathbf{v}}_{RB}$, turns out to be frame-indifferent and physically observable. Specifically, if $\mathbf{Q}_{\text{RB}}(t)$ is the rotation tensor describing the motion of the closest rigid body frame, then $\mathbf{v}$ is seen as $\mathbf{Q}_{\text{RB}}^{T}\mathbf{v}_{d}$ by an observer in that frame. As a consequence, the momentum, ener…
