Feature extraction for automatic classification of EEG signals typically relies on time frequency representations of the signal. Techniques such as cepstral-based filter banks or wavelets are popular analysis techniques in many signal processing applications including EEG classification. In this paper, we present a comparison of a variety of approaches to estimating and postprocessing features. To further aid in discrimination of periodic signals from aperiodic signals, we add a differential energy term. We evaluate our approaches on the TUH EEG Corpus, which is the largest publicly available EEG corpus and an exceedingly challenging task due to the clinical nature of the data. We demonstrate that a variant of a standard filter bank-based approach, coupled with first and second derivatives, provides a substantial reduction in the overall error rate. The combination of differential energy and derivatives produces a 24% absolute reduction in the error rate and improves our ability to discriminate between signal events and background noise. This relatively simple approach proves to be comparable to other popular feature extraction approaches such as wavelets, but is much more computationally efficient.

Translation of imagined speech electroencephalogram(EEG) into human understandable commands greatly facilitates the design of naturalistic brain computer interfaces. To achieve improved imagined speech unit classification, this work aims to profit from the parallel information contained in multi-phasal EEG data recorded while speaking, imagining and performing articulatory movements corresponding to specific speech units. A bi-phase common representation learning module using neural networks is designed to model the correlation and reproducibility between an analysis phase and a support phase.…
Despite significant recent progress in the area of Brain-Computer Interface (BCI), there are numerous shortcomings associated with collecting Electroencephalography (EEG) signals in real-world environments. These include, but are not limited to, subject and session data variance, long and arduous calibration processes and predictive generalisation issues across different subjects or sessions. This implies that many downstream applications, including Steady State Visual Evoked Potential (SSVEP) based classification systems, can suffer from a shortage of reliable data. Generating meaningful and …

A novel instance-based method for the classification of electroencephalography (EEG) signals is presented and evaluated in this paper. The non-stationary nature of the EEG signals, coupled with the demanding task of pattern recognition with limited training data as well as the potentially noisy signal acquisition conditions, have motivated the work reported in this study. The proposed adaptive template enhancement mechanism transforms the feature-level instances by treating each feature dimension separately, hence resulting in improved class separation and better query-class matching. The prop…

In this paper, we try to analyze drowsiness which is a major factor in many traffic accidents due to the clear decline in the attention and recognition of danger drivers. The object of this work is to develop an automatic method to evaluate the drowsiness stage by analysis of EEG signals records. The absolute band power of the EEG signal was computed by taking the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) of the time series signal. Finally, the algorithm developed in this work has been improved on eight samples from the Physionet sleep-EDF database.

Despite extensive standardization, diagnostic interviews for mental health disorders encompass substantial subjective judgment. Previous studies have demonstrated that EEG-based neural measures can function as reliable objective correlates of depression, or even predictors of depression and its course. However, their clinical utility has not been fully realized because of 1) the lack of automated ways to deal with the inherent noise associated with EEG data at scale, and 2) the lack of knowledge of which aspects of the EEG signal may be markers of a clinical disorder. Here we adapt an unsuperv…
In this paper we demonstrate that performance of a speaker verification system can be improved by concatenating electroencephalography (EEG) signal features with speech signal features or only using EEG signal features. We use state-of-the-art end-to-end deep learning model for performing speaker verification and we demonstrate our results for noisy speech. Our results indicate that EEG signals can improve the robustness of speaker verification systems, especially in noiser environment.

This work proposes improvements in the electroencephalogram (EEG) recording protocols for motor imagery through the introduction of actual motor movement and/or somatosensory cues. The results obtained demonstrate the advantage of requiring the subjects to perform motor actions following the trials of imagery. By introducing motor actions in the protocol, the subjects are able to perform actual motor planning, rather than just visualizing the motor movement, thus greatly improving the ease with which the motor movements can be imagined. This study also probes the added advantage of administeri…

Nowadays, there is rising curiosity in interpreting and analyzing electroencephalography (EEG) dynamics with ConvNets. Our study focused on ConvNets of different structures, constructed for predicting imagined left and right movements on a subject-independent basis through raw EEG data. Results showed that recently advanced methods in machine learning field, i.e. adaptive moments and …
Generative adversarial networks (GANs) are recently highly successful in generative applications involving images and start being applied to time series data. Here we describe EEG-GAN as a framework to generate electroencephalographic (EEG) brain signals. We introduce a modification to the improved training of Wasserstein GANs to stabilize training and investigate a range of architectural choices critical for time series generation (most notably up- and down-sampling). For evaluation we consider and compare different metrics such as Inception score, Frechet inception distance and sliced Wasser…

Accurate electroencephalogram (EEG) pattern decoding for specific mental tasks is one of the key steps for the development of brain-computer interface (BCI), which is quite challenging due to the considerably low signal-to-noise ratio of EEG collected at the brain scalp. Machine learning provides a promising technique to optimize EEG patterns toward better decoding accuracy. However, existing algorithms do not effectively explore the underlying data structure capturing the true EEG sample distribution, and hence can only yield a suboptimal decoding accuracy. To uncover the intrinsic distributi…
Objective: Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have shown great potential in the field of Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs). The raw Electroencephalogram (EEG) signal is usually represented as 2-Dimensional (2-D) matrix composed of channels and time points, which ignores the spatial topological information. Our goal is to make the CNN with the raw EEG signal as input have the ability to learn EEG spatial topological features, and improve its performance while essentially maintaining its original structure. Methods:We propose an EEG Topographic Representation Module (TRM). This module consists …
Automated seizure detection and classification from electroencephalography (EEG) can greatly improve seizure diagnosis and treatment. However, several modeling challenges remain unaddressed in prior automated seizure detection and classification studies: (1) representing non-Euclidean data structure in EEGs, (2) accurately classifying rare seizure types, and (3) lacking a quantitative interpretability approach to measure model ability to localize seizures. In this study, we address these challenges by (1) representing the spatiotemporal dependencies in EEGs using a graph neural network (GNN) a…
One of the main challenges in electroencephalogram (EEG) based brain-computer interface (BCI) systems is learning the subject/session invariant features to classify cognitive activities within an end-to-end discriminative setting. We propose a novel end-to-end machine learning pipeline, EEG-NeXt, which facilitates transfer learning by: i) aligning the EEG trials from different subjects in the Euclidean-space, ii) tailoring the techniques of deep learning for the scalograms of EEG signals to capture better frequency localization for low-frequency, longer-duration events, and iii) utilizing pret…

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a useful way to implicitly monitor the users perceptual state during multimedia consumption. One of the primary challenges for the practical use of EEG-based monitoring is to achieve a satisfactory level of accuracy in EEG classification. Connectivity between different brain regions is an important property for the classification of EEG. However, how to define the connectivity structure for a given task is still an open problem, because there is no ground truth about how the connectivity structure should be in order to maximize the classification performance. In…

In this paper we demonstrate that performance of voice activity detection (VAD) system operating in presence of background noise can be improved by concatenating acoustic input features with electroencephalography (EEG) features. We also demonstrate that VAD using only EEG features shows better performance than VAD using only acoustic features in presence of background noise. We implemented a recurrent neural network (RNN) based VAD system and we demonstrate our results for two different data sets recorded in presence of different noise conditions in this paper. We finally demonstrate the abil…

Emotion recognition based on EEG (electroencephalography) has been widely used in human-computer interaction, distance education and health care. However, the conventional methods ignore the adjacent and symmetrical characteristics of EEG signals, which also contain salient information related to emotion. In this paper, a spatial folding ensemble network (SFE-Net) is presented for EEG feature extraction and emotion recognition. Firstly, for the undetected area between EEG electrodes, an improved Bicubic-EEG interpolation algorithm is developed for EEG channels information completion, which all…
Recent behavioral and electroencephalograph (EEG) studies have defined ways that auditory spatial attention can be allocated over large regions of space. As with most experimental studies, behavior EEG was averaged over 10s of minutes because identifying abstract feature spatial codes from raw EEG data is extremely challenging. The goal of this study is to design a deep learning model that can learn from raw EEG data and predict auditory spatial information on a trial-by-trial basis. We designed a convolutional neural networks (CNN) model to predict the attended location or other stimulus loca…

Background: Electroencephalography (EEG) monitors brain activity during sleep and is used to identify sleep disorders. In sleep medicine, clinicians interpret raw EEG signals in so-called sleep stages, which are assigned by experts to every 30s window of signal. For diagnosis, they also rely on shorter prototypical micro-architecture events which exhibit variable durations and shapes, such as spindles, K-complexes or arousals. Annotating such events is traditionally performed by a trained sleep expert, making the process time consuming, tedious and subject to inter-scorer variability. To autom…
In the recent past, deep learning-based approaches have significantly improved the classification accuracy when compared to classical signal processing and machine learning based frameworks. But most of them were subject-dependent studies which were not able to generalize on the subject-independent tasks due to the inter-subject variability present in EEG data. In this work, a novel deep learning framework capable of doing subject-independent emotion recognition is presented, consisting of two parts. First, an unsupervised Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) with channel-attention autoencoder is pro…

However, security issues such as sensitive information disclosure and unauthorized operations have not received sufficient concerns. There are still some defects with the existing solutions to encrypted EEG data such as low accuracy, high time complexity or slow processing speed. For this reason, a classification …
EEG signals have been reported to be informative and reliable for emotion recognition in recent years. Inspired by recent neuroscience studies on inter-subject correlation, we proposed a Contrastive Learning method for Inter-Subject Alignment (CLISA) to tackle the cross-subject emotion recognition problem. Contrastive learning was employed to minimize the inter-subject differences by maximizing the similarity in EEG signal represen…

To be effective, state of the art machine learning technology needs large amounts of annotated data. There are numerous compelling applications in healthcare that can benefit from high performance automated decision support systems provided by deep learning technology, but they lack the comprehensive data resources required to apply sophisticated machine learning models. Further, for economic reasons, it is very difficult to justify the creation of large annotated corpora for these applications. Hence, automated annotation techniques become increasingly important. In this study, we investigate…
Brain-computer interface (BCI) is a communication system between humans and computers reflecting human intention without using a physical control device. Since deep learning is robust in extracting features from data, research on decoding electroencephalograms by applying deep learning has progressed in the BCI domain. Emotional recognition through exploring the electroencephalography (EEG) characteristics has been widely performed in recent studies. Nonlinear analysis and feature extraction methods for understanding the complex dynamical phenomena are associated with the EEG patterns of different emotions. The phase space reconstruction is a typical nonlinear technique to reveal the dynamics of the brain neural system. Recently, the topological data analysis (TDA) scheme has been used to explore the properties of space, which provides a powerful tool to think over the phase space. In this work, we proposed …
EEG-based recognition of activities and states involves the use of prior neuroscience knowledge to generate quantitative EEG features, which may limit BCI performance. Although neural network-based methods can effectively extract features, they often encounter issues such as poor generalization across datasets, high predicting volatility, and low model interpretability. Hence, we propose a novel lightweight multi-dimensional attention network, called LMDA-Net. By incorporating two novel attention modules designed specifically for EEG signals, the channel attention module and the depth attentio…

The loss of limb motion arising from damage to the spinal cord is a disability that could effect people while performing their day-to-day activities. The restoration of limb movement would enable people with spinal cord injury to interact with their environment more naturally and this is where a brain-computer interface (BCI) system could be beneficial. The detection of limb movement imagination (MI) could be significant for such a BCI, where the detected MI can guide the computer system. Using MI detection through electroencephalography (EEG), we can recognize the imagination of movement in a…
