A $d$-dimensional invertible topological field theory is a functor from the symmetric monoidal $(\infty,n)$-category of $d$-bordisms (embedded into $\mathbb{R}^\infty$ and equipped with a tangential $(X,ξ)$-structure) which lands in the Picard subcategory of the target symmetric monoidal $(\infty,n)$-category. We classify these field theories in terms of the cohomology of the $(n-d)$-connective cover of the Madsen-Tillmann spectrum. This is accomplished by identifying the classifying space of the $(\infty,n)$-category of bordisms with $Ω^{\infty-n}MTξ$ as an $E_\infty$-spaces. This generalizes the celebrated result of Galatius-Madsen-Tillmann-Weiss in the case $n=1$, and of Bokstedt-Madsen in the $n$-uple case. We also obtain results for the $(\infty,n)$-category of $d$-bordisms embedding into a fixed ambient manifold $M$, generalizing results of Randal-Williams in the case $n=1$. We give two applications: (1) We completely compute all extended and partially extended invertible TFTs of dimension $d \leq 4$ with target a certain category of $n$-vector spaces (for $n \leq 4$), and (2) we use this to give a negative answer to a question raised by Gilmer and Masbaum.
Quantum field theories with an energy gap can be approximated at long-range by topological quantum field theories. The same should be true for suitable condensed matter systems. For those with short range entanglement (SRE) the effective topological theory is invertible, and so amenable to study via stable homotopy theory. This leads to concrete topological invariants of gapped SRE phases which are finer than existing invariants. Computations in examples demonstrate their effectiveness.
In previous work, we showed that there are appropriate model category structures on the category of simplicial categories and on the category of Segal precategories, and that they are Quillen equivalent to one another and to Rezk's complete Segal space model structure on the category of simplicial spaces. Here, we show that these results still hold if we instead use groupoid or "invertible" cases. Namely, we show that model structures on the categories of simplicial groupoids, Segal pregroupoids, and invertible simplicial spaces are all Quillen equivalent to one another and to the standard mod…
We give a modern geometric viewpoint on anomalies in quantum field theory and illustrate it in a 1-dimensional theory: supersymmetric quantum mechanics. This is background for the resolution of worldsheet anomalies in orientifold superstring theory.
A once-extended d-dimensional topological field theory Z is a symmetric monoidal functor (taking values in a chosen target symmetric monoidal (infty,2)-category) assigning values to (d-2)-manifolds, (d-1)-manifolds, and d-manifolds. We show that if Z is at least once-extended and the value assigned to the (d-1)-torus is invertible, then the entire topological field theory is invertible, that is it factors through the maximal Picard infty-category of the target. Results are obtained in the presence of arbitrary tangential structures.
Four lectures on invertible field theories at the Park City Mathematics Institute 2019. Cobordism categories are introduced both as plain categories and topologically enriched. We then discuss localization of categories and its relationship to classifying spaces, and state the main theorem of classification of invertible field theories in these terms. We also discuss symmetric monoidal structures and their relationship to actions of the little disk operads. In the final lecture we discuss an application of cobordism categories to characteristic classes of surface bundles. Emphasis will be on s…
We classify invertible 2-dimensional framed and $r$-spin topological field theories by computing the homotopy groups and the $k$-invariant of the corresponding bordism categories. The zeroth homotopy group of a bordism category is the usual Thom bordism group, the first homotopy group can be identified with a Reinhart vector field bordism group, or the so called SKK group as observed by Ebert, Böckstedt-Svane and Kreck-Stolz-Teichner. We present the computation of SKK groups for stable tangential structures. Then we consider non-stable examples: the 2-dimensional framed and $r$-spin SKK groups…
We propose a general formula for the group of invertible topological phases on a space $Y$, possibly equipped with the action of a group $G$. Our formula applies to arbitrary symmetry types. When $Y$ is Euclidean space and $G$ a crystallographic group, the term `topological crystalline phases' is sometimes used for these phases of matter.
We implement an extended version of reflection positivity (Wick-rotated unitarity) for invertible topological quantum field theories and compute the abelian group of deformation classes using stable homotopy theory. We apply these field theory considerations to lattice systems, assuming the existence and validity of low energy effective field theory approximations, and thereby produce a general formula for the group of Symmetry Protected Topological (SPT) phases in terms of Thom's bordism spectra; the only input is the dimension and symmetry group. We provide computations for fermionic systems…

How can we design neural networks that allow for stable universal approximation of maps between topologically interesting manifolds? The answer is with a coordinate projection. Neural networks based on topological data analysis (TDA) use tools such as persistent homology to learn topological signatures of data and stabilize training but may not be universal approximators or have stable inverses. Other architectures universally approximate data distributions on submanifolds but only when the latter are given by a single chart, making them unable to learn maps that change topology. By exploiting…
Cobordism categories have played an important role in classical geometry and more recently in mathematical treatments of quantum field theory. Here we will compute localisations of two-dimensional discrete cobordism categories. This allows us, up to equivalence, to determine the category of invertible two-dimensional topological field theories in the sense of Atiyah. We are able to treat the orientable, non-orientable, closed and open cases.
We study bosonic systems on a spacetime lattice defined by path integrals of commuting fields. We introduce branch-independent bosonic (BIB) systems, whose path integral is independent of the branch structure of the spacetime simplicial complex, even for a spacetime with boundaries. In contrast, a generic lattice bosonic (GLB) system's path integral may depend on the branch structure. We find the invertible topological order characterized by the Stiefel-Whitney cocycle (e.g., 4+1d w$_2$w$_3$) to be nontrivial for BIB systems, but this topological order and a trivial gapped tensor product state…
