We investigate the gravitation waves produced from QCD and electroweak phase transitions in the early universe by using a 5-dimension holographic QCD model and a holographic technicolor model. The dynamical holographic QCD model is to describe the pure gluon system, where a first order confinement-deconfinement phase transition can happen at the critical temperature around 250 ${\rm MeV}$. The minimal holographic technicolor model is introduced to model the strong dynamics of electroweak, it can give a first order electroweak phase transition at the critical temperature around 100-360 ${\rm GeV}$. We find that for both GW signals produced from QCD and EW phase transitions, in the peak frequency region, the dominant contribution comes from the sound waves, while away from the peak frequency region the contribution from the bubble collision is dominant. The peak frequency of gravitation wave determined by the QCD phase transition is located around $10^{-7}$ Hz which is within the detectability of FAST and SKA, and the peak frequency of gravitational wave predicted by EW phase transition is located at $0.002-0.007$ Hz, which might be detectable by BBO, DECIGO, LISA and ELISA.
We present an analysis of two-loop mixed QCD and electroweak corrections to the decay of the Z boson into light quarks. We find that the naive factorization of QCD and electroweak corrections does not describe correctly the two-loop effects. The nonfactorizable corrections shift the width of the Z boson by approximately -0.55(3) MeV and increase the central value of the strong coupling constant determined at LEP by 0.001.
We calculate next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to electroweak Higgs plus three jet production. Both vector boson fusion (VBF) and Higgs-strahlung type contributions are included along with all interferences. The calculation is implemented within the Matchbox NLO framework of the Herwig++ event generator.
I recall the main ideas about the treatment of QCD infrared physics, as developed in the late seventies, and I outline some novel applications of those ideas to Electroweak Theory.
We report on recently computed mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to on-shell $W$ and $Z$ boson production. We use these differential predictions to estimate their impact on the $W$ boson mass determination at the LHC.
We compute the contribution of three-loop mixed QCD-electroweak corrections ($α_S^2α^2$) to the $gg \to H$ scattering amplitude. We employ the method of differential equations to compute the relevant integrals and express them in terms of Goncharov polylogarithms.
Next-to-leading order electroweak and QCD radiative corrections to the Drell-Yan process with high dimuon masses for experiments CMS LHC at CERN have been studied in fully differential form. The FORTRAN code READY for numerical analysis of Drell-Yan observables has been presented. The radiative corrections are found to become significant for CMS LHC experiment setup.
We study the process of the association production of chargino and neutralino including the NLO QCD and the complete one-loop electroweak corrections in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model(MSSM) at the Fermilab Tevatron and the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In both the NLO QCD and one-loop electroweak calculations we apply the algorithm of the phase-space slicing(PSS) method. We find that the NLO QCD corrections generally increase the Born cross sections, while the electroweak relative corrections decrease the Born cross section in most of the chosen parameter space.…
The detailed study of the Higgs boson is one of the main tasks of contemporary particle physics. Gluon fusion, the main production channel of Higgs bosons at the LHC, has been successfully modelled in QCD up to $\text{N}^3\text{LO}$. To fully exploit this unprecedented theoretical effort, sub-leading contributions, such as electroweak corrections, must be investigated. I will present the analytic calculations of the gluon- and quark-induced Higgs plus jet amplitudes in mixed QCD-electroweak corrections mediated by light quarks up to order $v α^2 α_S^{3/2}$.
A precise theoretical description of W- and Z-boson production in the resonance region is essential for the correct interpretation of high-precision measurements of the W-boson mass and the effective weak mixing angle. Currently, the largest unknown fixed-order contribution is given by the mixed QCD-electroweak corrections of $\mathcal{O}(α_sα)$. We argue, using the framework of the pole expansion for the NNLO QCD-electroweak corrections established in a previous paper, that the numerically dominant corrections arise from the combination of large QCD corrections to the production with the larg…
We calculate the electroweak and QCD corrections to W-W+ -> tt and ZZ -> tt. We also consider the interplay of these corrections with the effect of anomalous interactions that affect the massive weak bosons and the top. The results at the VV level fusion are convoluted with the help of the effective vector boson approximation to give predictions for a high energy e+e- collider.
Top quark production in electron-positron annihilation is one of the benchmark reactions at a future linear collider. Both electroweak and QCD corrections are large, amounting to 10% or even more in specific kinematic regions. In this note we present a method which allows to combine the dominant terms from both sources, thus improving considerably the result based on a simple addition of both corrections.
In this talk we discuss the implementation of the full next-to-leading order QCD corrections to electroweak Higgs boson plus three jet production at the LHC within the Matchbox framework of the Herwig++ event generator. We also present numerical results for integrated cross sections and kinematic distributions.
We compute the mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to the cross section for the production of a Higgs boson via gluon fusion, in the limit of a small mass of the electroweak gauge bosons. This limit is regular and we calculate it by setting the W, Z masses to zero in the Feynman rules for their propagators. Our analytic results provide an independent check, in a non-trivial limit, of a recent exact computation for the three-loop mixed QCD and electroweak virtual corrections and the corresponding contribution to the cross section in the soft-virtual approximation. From our calculation in the smal…
We describe application of Bogoliubov compensation principle to calculation of non-perturbative contribution in the electroweak theory and QCD. We obtain unique solutions of compensation equations, which impose strong restrictions on parameters of theories and on functional dependence of corresponding form-factors. We calculate value of running gauge electroweak coupling $α_w(M_W)=0.0374$, that differs from the experimental value less than by 10%. We derive effective Nambu-Jona-Lasinio interaction from fundamental QCD and express its parameters in terms of initial QCD parameters: $α_s$ at low-…
We compute the next-to-leading order QCD and electroweak corrections to $Z$ and $W$ pole observables using the dimension-6 Standard Model effective field theory and present numerical results that can easily be included in global fitting programs. Limits on SMEFT coefficient functions are presented at leading order and at next-to-leading order under several assumptions.
After ten years from its discovery, the Higgs boson is still under unprecedented scrutiny. A huge theoretical effort has been invested in modelling Higgs boson production through gluon fusion, reaching $\text{N}^3\text{LO}$ predictions in pure QCD. This incredible theoretical achievement makes the exact computation of sub-leading contributions, such as mixed QCD-Electroweak corrections, necessary. I will present the analytic calculation of the gluon- and quark-initiated two-loop four-point contributions to such class of corrections mediated by light quarks at order $v α^2 α_S^{3/2}$.
We investigate the role of a certain class of QCD corrections to electroweak vector boson scattering at small scattering angles and large energies. These are present since, from the perturbative analysis, the vector bosons may dissociate into quark-antiquark pairs giving rise to colour dipoles interacting through gluon exchanges. After the computation of the vector boson impact factors, we present expressions for the lowest order QCD scattering amplitude and for the leading logarithmic BFKL amplitude. Particularly we discuss numerical results for the process $γγ\to ZZ$. The QCD corrections to …
The implementation of the full next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to electroweak Higgs boson plus three jet production at hadron colliders such as the LHC within the Matchbox NLO framework of the Herwig++ event generator is discussed. We present numerical results for integrated cross sections and kinematic distributions.
QCD corrections to all the allowed decays of superheavy groundstate quarkonia into electroweak gauge and Higgs bosons are presented. For quick estimates, approximations that reproduce the exact results within less than at worst two percent are also given.
In this work we give a detailed description of a method for the calculation of QCD corrections to electroweak processes in dimensional regularization that does not require any definition of the gamma_5 matrix in d dimensions. This method appears particularly convenient in order to limit the algebraic complexity of higher order calculations. As an example, we compute the leading logarithmic corrections to the b -> s gamma decay.
We explicitly calculate the contribution to Higgs production at the LHC from the interference between gluon-gluon and Weak Vector Boson fusion, and compare it to the pure QCD and pure Electro-weak result. While the effect is small at tree level, we speculate it will be significantly enhanced by loop effects.
We present the (two--loop) QCD corrections to the longitudinal and transverse components of the electroweak gauge bosons self--energies for arbitrary momentum transfer and for different internal quark masses. Compact formulae for both the real and imaginary parts are given in the general case as well as in some physically interesting special cases. The dependence on the definition of the quark masses is discussed.
It is known that the short distance QCD contribution to the mass difference of pions is quadratic on the quark masses, and irrelevant with respect to the long distance part. It is also considered in the literature that its calculation contain infinities, which should be absorbed by the quark mass renormalization. Following a prescription by Craigie, Narison and Riazuddin, of a renormalization group improved perturbation theory to deal with the electromagnetic mass shift problem in QCD, we show that the short distance QCD contribution to the electroweak pion mass difference (with $m_u=m_d\neq0$…
We present the matching of the next-to-leading order QCD calculation for W+W+jj production via vector-boson fusion in hadronic collisions to parton-shower Monte-Carlo programs according to the POWHEG method. Our implementation complements existing code for QCD-induced W+W+jj production in the POWHEGBOX package, thereby providing a platform for the complete Standard Model production of W+W+jj events via QCD and electroweak interactions. The impact of parton-shower effects is discussed for various distributions and found to be small in most cases. However, few observables, that are relevant for …
This review emphasizes the close analogy between hard QCD instanton-induced chirality violating processes in deep-inelastic scattering and electroweak instanton-induced baryon plus lepton number (B+L) violating processes in Quantum Flavor Dynamics (QFD). Recent information about QCD instantons, both from lattice simulations and from the H1 experiment at HERA, can be used to learn about the fate of electroweak B+L violation at future high energy colliders in the hundreds of TeV regime, such as the projected Very Large Hadron Collider (VLHC). The cross-sections turn out to be unobservably small …
We study the impact of the recently computed mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to the production of $W$ and $Z$ bosons at the LHC on the value of the $W$ mass extracted from the transverse momentum distribution of charged leptons from $W$ decays. Using the average lepton transverse momenta in $W$ and $Z$ decays as simplified observables for the determination of the $W$ mass, we estimate that mixed QCD-electroweak corrections can shift the extracted value of the $W$ mass by up to ${\cal O}(20)~{\rm MeV}$, depending on the kinematic cuts employed to define fiducial cross sections for $Z$ and $W$…
We present an implementation of the full electroweak $H+2~\text{jets}$ production process at hadron colliders in the framework of the $\tt{POWHEG~BOX}$, a public tool for the matching of fixed-order perturbative calculations with parton shower generators. Our implementation allows for the simultaneous description of vector-boson fusion and Higgsstrahlung contributions. NLO-QCD and electroweak corrections are taken into account and matched to QCD and QED showers, respectively. The size of the fixed-order QCD and electroweak corrections is found to be moderate, but dependent on the considered se…
Following recent work on the combination of electroweak and strong radiative corrections to single W-boson hadroproduction in the POWHEG BOX framework, we generalize the above treatment to cover the neutral current Drell-Yan process. According to the POWHEG method, we combine both the next-to-leading order (NLO) electroweak and QED multiple photon corrections with the native NLO and Parton Shower QCD contributions. We show comparisons with the predictions of the electroweak generator HORACE, to validate the reliability and accuracy of the approach. We also present phenomenological results obta…
Assuming that the electroweak and QCD phase transitions are first order, upon supercooling, bubbles of the new phase appear. These bubbles grow to macroscopic sizes compared to the natural scales associated with the Compton wavelengths of particle excitations. They propagate by burning the old phase into the new phase at the surface of the bubble. We study the hydrodynamic stability of the burning and find that for the velocities of interest for cosmology in the electroweak phase transition, the shape of the bubble wall is stable under hydrodynamic perturbations. Bubbles formed in the cosmolog…
We calculate the ${\cal O}(α_{s})$ QCD and ${\cal O}(α_{\rm ew})$ electroweak one-loop corrections in the Standard Model framework, to the production of an intermediate Higgs boson associated with $t\bar{t}$ pair via $γγ$ fusion at an electron-positron linear collider (LC). We find the ${\cal O}(α_{s})$ QCD corrections can be larger than the ${\cal O}(α_{\rm ew})$ electroweak ones, with the variations of the Higgs boson mass $m_{h}$ and $e^+e^-$ colliding energy $\sqrt{s}$. Both corrections may significantly decrease or increase the Born cross section. The numerical results show that the relat…
The VBFNLO program package is a collection of Monte Carlo programs for the calculation of NLO QCD corrections to vector boson fusion cross sections, double and triple vector boson production, or the production of two electroweak bosons in association with an additional jet. An overview is given of the processes and features implemented in VBFNLO. WWgamma and Wgamma jet production are discussed as examples.
The interaction of QCD and electroweak sector with gravity is characterized by the generation of a massless pole in a specific form factor present in the 1-loop effective action. We briefly illustrate how to single out this behaviour in perturbation theory, by taking as an example the $TJJ$ vertex, with $T$ denoting the energy momentum tensor of the Standard Model. The breaking of scale invariance, due to the trace anomaly, is then related to the appearance of a local degree of freedom in the effective action, which is of dilaton type.
First LHC data have been collected and collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV are anticipated for the next months. The commissioning of the detectors and the re-establishment of the Standard Model in the new energy regime will be the main tasks for the experimental collaborations in the year to come. This report summarizes the measurement plans and performance expectations of the ATLAS and CMS experiments for a selected number of QCD and electroweak analyses with an emphasis on the early data taking phase. Some longer term prospects are pointed out.
We calculate the two-loop QCD correction to the scalar quark contributions to the electroweak gauge-boson self-energies at zero momentum-transfer in the supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. We then derive the $O(α_s)$ correction to the contribution of the scalar top and bottom quark loops to the rho parameter, which is the most sizable supersymmetric contribution to the electroweak mixing angle and the W-boson mass. The two-loop corrections modify the one-loop contribution by up to 30%; the gluino decouples for large masses. Contrary to the SM case where the QCD corrections are nega…
Phase transitions associated with nearly conformal dynamics are known to lead to significant supercooling. A notorious example is the phase transition in Randall-Sundrum models or their CFT duals. In fact, it was found that the phase transition in this case is first-order and the tunneling probability for the radion/dilaton is so small that the system typically remains trapped in the false vacuum and the phase transition never completes. The universe then keeps expanding and cooling. Eventually the temperature drops below the QCD scale. We show that the QCD condensates which subsequently form …
We study the distributions of leptons from the decay of electroweak vector bosons produced in hadron collisions. The effects of the initial state multiple soft-gluon emission, using the Collins--Soper resummation formalism, are included. The resummed results are compared with the next-to-leading-order results for the distributions of the transverse momentum, rapidity asymmetry, and azimuthal angle of the decay leptons.
The production of W or Z bosons in association with two jets is an important background to the Higgs boson search in vector-boson fusion at the LHC. The purely electroweak component of this background is dominated by vector-boson fusion, which exhibits kinematic distributions very similar to the Higgs boson signal. We consider the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the electroweak production of l nu_l jj and l^+ l^- jj events at the LHC, within typical vector-boson fusion cuts. We show that the QCD corrections are modest, increasing the total cross sections by about 10%. Remaining scale …
The two-loop QCD corrections to the $ρ$ parameter are derived in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. They turn out to be sizable and modify the one-loop result by up to 30%. Furthermore exact results for the gluonic corrections to $Δr$ are presented and compared with the leading contribution entering via the $ρ$ parameter.
We report on a calculation of the vector current contributions to the electroweak production of top quark pairs in $e^+e^-$ annihilation at next-to-next-to-leading order in Quantum Chromodynamics. Our setup is fully differential and can be used to calculate any infrared-safe observable. The real emission contributions are handled by a next-to-next-to-leading order generalization of the phase-space slicing method. We demonstrate the power of our technique by considering its application to various inclusive and exclusive observables.
The relevance of single-W and single-Z production processes at hadron colliders is well known: in the present paper the status of theoretical calculations of Drell-Yan processes is summarized and some results on the combination of electroweak and QCD corrections to a sample of observables of the process $p p \to W^\pm \to μ^\pm + X$ at the LHC are discussed. The phenomenological analysis shows that a high-precision knowledge of QCD and a careful combination of electroweak and strong contributions is mandatory in view of the anticipated LHC experimental accuracy. One of the authors (O.N.) dedic…
This paper is a slightly modified version of the introductory part of a doctoral dissertation also containing the articles hep-ph/0311268, hep-ph/0510375, hep-ph/0512177 and hep-ph/0701250. The thesis discusses effective field theory methods, in particular dimensional reduction, in the context of finite temperature field theory. We first briefly review the formalism of thermal field theory and show how dimensional reduction emerges as the high-temperature limit for static quantities. Then we apply dimensional reduction to two distinct problems, the pressure of electroweak theory and the screen…
We present the two-loop master integrals relevant to the ${\mathcal O}(αα_s)$-corrections to the decay $H \rightarrow b \bar{b}$ through a $H t \bar{t}$-coupling. We keep the full dependence on the heavy particle masses, but neglect the $b$-quark mass. The occurring square roots can be rationalised and the result is expressed in terms of multiple polylogarithms.
Measurements of electroweak precision observables at future electron-positron colliders, such as the CEPC, FCC-ee, and ILC, will be sensitive to physics at multi-TeV scales. To achieve this sensitivity, precise predictions for the Standard Model expectations of these observables are needed, including corrections at the three- and four-loop level. In this article, results are presented for the calculation of a subset of three-loop mixed electroweak-QCD corrections, stemming from diagrams with a gluon exchange and two closed fermion loops. The numerical impact of these corrections is illustrated…
We present the full $\mathcal{O}(α_s)$ supersymmetric QCD corrections for stop-anti-stop annihilation into electroweak final states within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). We also incorporate Coulomb corrections due to gluon exchange between the incoming stops. Numerical results for the annihilation cross sections and the predicted neutralino relic density are presented. We show that the impact of the radiative corrections on the cosmologically preferred region of the parameter space can become larger than the current experimental uncertainty, shifting the relic bands within t…
We discuss the recent derivation of the three-loop ${\cal O}(αα_s)$ contribution to the Higgs boson production cross section via gluon fusion arising from diagrams with light quarks, using an effective theory approach. We show results for the updated prediction of this process accounting for all the new theoretical calculations and the newest MSTW PDFs.
By using effective field theory techniques for the standard model, we discuss the issue of what $μ$ scale is the appropriate one in the QCD corrections to the large-$\mt$ electroweak contributions to $Δr$. This needs the construction of an effective field theory below the top quark. We argue that, while matching corrections do verify the simple prescription of taking $μ\simeq \mt$ in $\a(\m)$, logarithmic (i.e. $\sim \log \mt$) corrections do not, and require the use of the running $\a(μ)$ in the corresponding renormalization group equation.
In the supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model we derive the two-loop QCD corrections to the scalar quark contributions to the electroweak precision observables entering via the rho parameter. A very compact expression is derived for the gluon-exchange contribution. The complete analytic result for the gluino-exchange contribution is very lengthy; we give expressions for several limiting cases that were derived from the general result. The two-loop corrections, generally of the order of 10 to 30% of the one-loop contributions, canbe very significant. Contrary to the Standard Model case,…
This talk first discusses some aspects of the chiral expansion with three light flavours related to the (non) applicability of the OZI rule. Next, the extension of ChPT to an effective theory of the full standard model is considered. Some applications of a systematic description of the coupling constants by sum rules (e.g. to the determination of quark masses and $K_{l3}$ decays) are presented.
We make the first calculation of the electroweak couplings of hybrid mesons to conventional mesons appropriate to photoproduction and to the decays of $B$ or $D$ mesons. $E1$ amplitudes are found to be large and may contribute in charge exchange $γp \to n H^+$ allowing production of (amongst others) the charged $1^{-+}$ exotic hybrid off $a_2$ exchange. Axial hybrid meson photoproduction is predicted to be large courtesy of $π$ exchange, and its strange hybrid counterpart is predicted in $B \to ψK_H(1^+)$ with $b.r. \sim 10^{-4}$. Higher multipoles, and some implications for hybrid charmonium …
Radiative corrections of strong and electroweak interactions are presented at next-to-leading order for Higgs-boson production in the weak-boson-fusion channel at the LHC. The calculation includes all weak-boson fusion and quark-antiquark annihilation diagrams as well as all related interferences. The electroweak corrections, which also include real corrections from incoming photons and leading heavy-Higgs-boson effects at two-loop order, are of the same size as the QCD corrections, viz. typically at the level of 5-10% for a Higgs-boson mass up to \sim 700 GeV. In general, they do not simply r…
We overview the structure of the effective action involving a dilaton and a Higgs in the Standard Model, which has been computed recently for the neutral currents sector. We discuss the role of the dilatation current ($J_D$) and of an effective degree of freedom appearing in the $J_D V V'$ correlator, with $V$ any neutral current, which can be interpreted as a Nambu-Goldstone mode generated by the anomalous breaking of the dilatation symmetry.
We present a calculation of the next-to-leading-order QCD and electroweak corrections to WWW production with leptonically decaying $\mathrm{W}$ bosons at the LHC, fully taking into account off-shell contributions, intermediary resonances, and spin correlations. The contributions of the quark-antiquark-induced electroweak correction to typical fiducial cross sections at the LHC are of the order of 5-8% and grow to tens of percent in the high-energy tails of distributions. We observe strong cancellations among the positive quark-photon and negative quark-antiquark-induced electroweak corrections…
We have calculated the full one-loop electroweak (EW) and QCD corrections to the third generation scalar-fermion pair production processes $e^+e^- \to γγ\to \tilde{f_i}\bar{\tilde{f_i}} (f=t,b,τ)$ at an electron-positron linear collider(LC) in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). We analyze the dependence of the radiative corrections on the parameters such as the colliding energy $\sqrt{\hat s}$ and the SUSY fundamental parameters $A_f$, $\tan β$, $μ$, $M_{SUSY}$ and so forth. The numerical results show that the EW corrections to the squark-, stau-pair production processes and QCD…
The analysis of hadronic vector boson decays at LHC does not normally allow for interference with QCD production. These effects are studied here using the Sherpa package and can move by several GeV/c 2 the peak positions experiments would reconstruct. However, their impact depends strongly on the kinematics involved. The shifts expected in boosted W and Z bosons, which have been the subject of experimental study, are explored for the first time. The effects in the channels examined are all very small or negligible, but this may not true if lower transverse momenta are analysed, for example in …
We compute the contribution of order $α_S^2α^2$ to the cross section of a top-antitop pair in association with at least one heavy Standard Model boson -- $Z$, $W^\pm$, and Higgs -- by including all effects of QCD, QED, and weak origin and by working in the automated MadGraph5_aMC@NLO framework. This next-to-leading order contribution is then combined with that of order $α_S^3α$, and with the two dominant lowest-order ones, $α_S^2α$ and $α_Sα^2$, to obtain phenomenological results relevant to a 8, 13, and 100~TeV $pp$ collider.
We present an estimate of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to mixed QCD-electroweak contribution to Higgs boson production cross section in gluon fusion, combining the recently computed three-loop virtual corrections and the approximate treatment of real emission in the soft approximation. We find that the NLO QCD corrections to mixed QCD-electroweak contributions are nearly identical to NLO QCD corrections to QCD Higgs production. Our result confirms an earlier estimate of these ${\cal O}\left( α\, α_s^2 \right)$ effects in arXiv:0811.3458 [hep-ph] and provides further support for th…
The radiative corrections of the strong and electroweak interactions are calculated at next-to-leading order for Higgs-boson production in the weak-boson-fusion channel at hadron colliders. Specifically, the calculation includes all weak-boson fusion and quark--antiquark annihilation diagrams to Higgs-boson production in association with two hard jets, including all corresponding interferences. The results on the QCD corrections confirm that previously made approximations of neglecting s-channel diagrams and interferences are well suited for predictions of Higgs production with dedicated vecto…
