Interval estimation of quantiles has been treated by many in the literature. However, to the best of our knowledge there has been no consideration for interval estimation when the data are available in grouped format. Motivated by this, we introduce several methods to obtain confidence intervals for quantiles when only grouped data is available. Our preferred method for interval estimation is to approximate the underlying density using the Generalized Lambda Distribution (GLD) to both estimate the quantiles and variance of the quantile estimators. We compare the GLD method with some other methods that we also introduce which are based on a frequency approximation approach and a linear interpolation approximation of the density. Our methods are strongly supported by simulations showing that excellent coverage can be achieved for a wide number of distributions. These distributions include highly-skewed distributions such as the log-normal, Dagum and Singh-Maddala distributions. We also apply our methods to real data and show that inference can be carried out on published outcomes that have been summarized only by a histogram. Our methods are therefore useful for a broad range of applications. We have also created a web application that can be used to conveniently calculate the estimators.
This paper considers quantile model with grouped explanatory variables. In order to have the sparsity of the parameter groups but also the sparsity between two successive groups of variables, we propose and study an adaptive fused group LASSO quantile estimator. The number of variable groups can be fixed or divergent. We find the convergence rate under classical assumptions and we show that the proposed estimator satisfies the oracle properties.
This paper introduces estimation methods for grouped latent heterogeneity in panel data quantile regression. We assume that the observed individuals come from a heterogeneous population with a finite number of types. The number of types and group membership is not assumed to be known in advance and is estimated by means of a convex optimization problem. We provide conditions under which group membership is estimated consistently and establish asymptotic normality of the resulting estimators. Simulations show that the method works well in finite samples when T is reasonably large. To illustrate…
Motivated by the need for effectively summarising, modelling, and forecasting the distributional characteristics of intra-daily returns, as well as the recent work on forecasting histogram-valued time-series in the area of symbolic data analysis, we develop a time-series model for forecasting quantile-function-valued (QF-valued) daily summaries for intra-daily returns. We call this model the dynamic quantile function (DQF) model. Instead of a histogram, we propose to use a $g$-and-$h$ quantile function to summarise the distribution of intra-daily returns. We work with a Bayesian formulation of…
Income inequality measures are often used as an indication of economic health. How to obtain reliable confidence intervals for these measures based on sampled data has been studied extensively in recent years. To preserve confidentiality, income data is often made available in summary form only (i.e. histograms, frequencies between quintiles, etc.). In this paper, we show that good coverage can be achieved for bootstrap and Wald-type intervals for quantile-based measures when only grouped (binned) data are available. These coverages are typically superior to those that we have been able to ach…
This paper develops a conformal method to compute prediction intervals for non-parametric regression that can automatically adapt to skewed data. Leveraging black-box machine learning algorithms to estimate the conditional distribution of the outcome using histograms, it translates their output into the shortest prediction intervals with approximate conditional coverage. The resulting prediction intervals provably have marginal coverage in finite samples, while asymptotically achieving conditional coverage and optimal length if the black-box model is consistent. Numerical experiments with simu…
Data on a continuous variable are often summarized by means of histograms or displayed in tabular format: the range of data is partitioned into consecutive interval classes and the number of observations falling within each class is provided to the analyst. Computations can then be carried in a nonparametric way by assuming a uniform distribution of the variable within each partitioning class, by concentrating all the observed values in the center, or by spreading them to the extremities. Smoothing methods can also be applied to estimate the underlying density or a parametric model can be fitt…
In real applications of the linear model, the explanatory variables are very often naturally grouped, the most common example being the multivariate variance analysis. In the present paper, a quantile model with structure group is considered, the number of groups can diverge with sample size. We introduce and study the adaptive elastic-net group estimator, for improving the parameter estimation accuracy. This method allows automatic selection, with a probability converging to one, of significant groups and further the non zero parameter estimators are asymptotically normal. The convergence rat…
In data mining, it is usually to describe a set of individuals using some summaries (means, standard deviations, histograms, confidence intervals) that generalize individual descriptions into a typology description. In this case, data can be described by several values. In this paper, we propose an approach for computing basic statics for such data, and, in particular, for data described by numerical multi-valued variables (interval, histograms, discrete multi-valued descriptions). We propose to treat all numerical multi-valued variables as distributional data, i.e. as individuals described by…

End-to-end learning of dynamical systems with black-box models, such as neural ordinary differential equations (ODEs), provides a flexible framework for learning dynamics from data without prescribing a mathematical model for the dynamics. Unfortunately, this flexibility comes at the cost of understanding the dynamical system, for which ODEs are used ubiquitously. Further, experimental data are collected under various conditions (inputs), such as treatments, or grouped in some way, such as part of sub-populations. Understanding the effects of these system inputs on system outputs is crucial to…
