A sub-population of energetic rotation-powered pulsars show high fluxes of pulsed non-thermal hard X-ray emission. While this MeV pulsar population includes some radio-loud pulsars like the Crab, a significant number have no detected radio or GeV emission, a mystery since gamma- ray emission is a common characteristic of pulsars with high spin-down power. Their steeply rising hard X-ray spectral energy distributions (SEDs) suggest peaks at 0.1 - 1 MeV but they have not been detected above 200 keV. Several upcoming and planned telescopes may shed light on the MeV pulsars. The Neutron star Interior Composition ExploreR (NICER) will observe pulsars in the 0.2 - 12 keV band and may discover additional MeV pulsars. Planned telescopes, such as All-Sky Medium-Energy Gamma-Ray Observatory (AMEGO) and e-ASTROGAM, will detect emission above 0.2 MeV and polarization in the 0.2 - 10 MeV band. We present a model for the spectrum and polarization of MeV pulsars where the X-ray emission comes from electron- positron pairs radiating in the outer magnetosphere and current sheet. This model predicts that the peak of the SED increases with surface magnetic field strength if the pairs are produced in polar cap cascades. For small inclination angles, a range of viewing angles can miss both the radio pulse and the GeV pulse from particles accelerating near the current sheet. Characterizing the emission and geometry of MeV pulsars can thus provide clues to the source of pairs and acceleration in the magnetosphere.
The spectra of only a few pulsars are known in the low-energy gamma-ray region around 1 Mev. We searched for point sources of gamma-radiation in the 0.3-1 and 1-8 Mev bandpasses at the location of known radio and X-ray pulsars. Single channel photometry using the SPI spectrometer on INTEGRAL, obtained using a coded-aperture mask, is feasible if calibrated using known fluxes from point sources. The calibration was carried out using the Crab nebula and verified using the Vela pulsar. The locations of a representative sample of pulsar types were then observed. Other than the Crab and Vela pulsars…
Enabled by the Fermi Large Area Telescope, we now know young and recycled pulsars fill the gamma-ray sky, and we are beginning to understand their emission mechanism and their distribution throughout the Galaxy. However, key questions remain: Is there a large population of pulsars near the Galactic center? Why do the most energetic pulsars shine so brightly in MeV gamma rays but not always at GeV energies? What is the source and nature of the pair plasma in pulsar magnetospheres, and what role does the polar cap accelerator play? Addressing these questions calls for a sensitive, wide-field MeV…
It is known that the concept of limiting polarization introduced seventy years ago by K G Budden has the capacity to explain the magnitude of circular polarization seen in normal pulsars with rotation periods of the order of one second under the assumption of a high-multiplicity electron-positron plasma. However, a review of limiting polarization under the same assumption in millisecond pulsars indicates that it is inapplicable there because the region of limiting polarization lies far outside the light cylinder. The present paper, using the ion-proton model, evaluates circular polarization bo…
The non-linear electrodynamics influence of pulsar magnetic field on the electromagnetic pulse polarization is discussed from the point of observation interpretation. The calculations of pulsar magnetic field impact on electromagnetic pulse polarization are made in such a way to make it easier to interpret these effects in space experiments. The law of hard emission pulse propagation in the pulsar magnetic field according to the vacuum non-linear electrodynamics is obtained. It was shown, that due to the birefringence in the vacuum the front part of any hard emission pulse coming from a pulsar…
Recent observations by the PAMELA and AMS-02 telescopes have uncovered an anomalous rise in the positron fraction at energies above 10~GeV. One possible explanation for this excess is the production of primary electron/positron pairs through electromagnetic cascades in pulsar magnetospheres. This process results in a high multiplicity of electron/positron pairs within the wind-termination shock of pulsar wind nebula (PWN). A consequence of this scenario is that no circular polarization should be observed within PWN, since the contributions from electrons and positrons exactly cancel. Here we n…
The radio polarization properties of the pulsar population are only superficially captured by the conventional picture of pulsar radio emission. We study the broadband polarization of 271 young radio pulsars, focusing particularly on circular polarization, using high quality observations made with the Ultra-Wideband Low receiver on Murriyang, the Parkes radio telescope. We seek to encapsulate polarization behaviour on a population scale by defining broad categories for frequency- and phase-dependent polarization evolution, studying the co-occurrences of these categorizations and comparing them…
The recent Fermi detection of the globular cluster (GC) 47 Tucanae highlighted the importance of modeling collective gamma-ray emission of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in GCs. Steady flux from such populations is also expected in the very high energy (VHE) domain covered by ground-based Cherenkov telescopes. We present pulsed curvature radiation (CR) as well as unpulsed inverse Compton (IC) calculations for an ensemble of MSPs in the GCs 47 Tucanae and Terzan 5. We demonstrate that the CR from these GCs should be easily detectable for Fermi, while constraints on the total number of MSPs and the …
We have developed a relativistic model for pulsar radio emission and polarization by taking into account of detailed geometry of emission region, rotation and modulation. The sparks activity on the polar cap leads to plasma columns in the emission region and modulated emission. By considering relativistic plasma bunches streaming out along the rotating dipolar field lines as source of curvature radiation, deduced the polarization state of the radiation field in terms of the Stokes parameters. We have simulated a set of typical pulse profiles, and analyzed the role of viewing geometry, rotation…
We analyze 9 years of PASS 8 $\textit{Fermi}$-LAT data in the 60$-$500 MeV range and determine flux upper limits (UL) for 17 gamma-ray dark pulsars as a probe of axions produced by nucleon-nucleon Bremsstrahlung in the pulsar core. Using a previously published axion decay gamma-ray photon flux model for pulsars which relies on a high core temperature of 20 MeV, we improve the determination of the UL axion mass ($m_a$), at 95 percent confidence level, to 9.6 $\times$ 10$^{-3}$ eV, which is a factor of 8 improvement on previous results. We show that the axion emissivity (energy loss rate per vol…
We study the propagation effects of radio waves in a pulsar magnetosphere, composed of relativistic electron-positron pair plasmas streaming along the magnetic field lines and corotating with the pulsar. We critically examine the various physical effects that can potentially influence the observed wave intensity and polarization, including resonant cyclotron absorption, wave mode coupling due to pulsar rotation, wave propagation through quasi-tangential regions (where the photon ray is nearly parallel to the magnetic field) and mode circularization due to the difference in the electron/positro…
The perturbations such as rotation and PC--current have been believed to be greatly affecting the pulsar radio emission and polarization. The two effects have not been considered simultaneously in the literature, however, each one of these has been considered separately and deduced the picture by simply superposing them, but such an approach can lead to spurious results. Hence by considering pulsar rotation and PC--current perturbations together instead of one at a time we have developed a single particle curvature radiation model, which is expected to be much more realistic. By simulating a s…
Single pulse data on radio pulsar polarization are traditionally presented in the form of two-dimentional greyscale patterns with the pulse longitude and polarization angle (PA) on the horizontal and vertical axis, respectively. Such diagrams reveal several enigmatic polarization effects: 1) bifurcations and loops of PA curve under central pulse components, 2) vertical spread of flux at all PA values, 3) exchange of power content between PA tracks of two orthogonal polarization modes (OPMs), and 4) peripherically-flat PA swings that span more than 180 degrees. It is shown that all these phenom…
We report radio polarization observations of G319.9-0.7 (MSC 319.9-0.7) at 3 and 6 cm obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. The source shows a highly elongated morphology with the energetic pulsar J1509-5850 located at the tip. We found a flat radio spectrum of index α=-0.26 +/- 0.04 and a high degree of linear polarization. These results confirm G319.9-0.7 as a bow-shock pulsar wind nebula. The polarization maps suggest a helical magnetic field trailing the pulsar, with the symmetry axis parallel to the system's inferred direction of motion. This is the first time such a field …

The traditional, geometrical rotating vector model (RVM) has proved particularly poor at capturing the polarization sweeps of the young energetic and millisecond pulsars detected by \textit{Fermi}. We augment this model by including finite altitude effects using a swept back vacuum dipole geometry. By further including the effects of orthogonal mode jumps, multiple emission altitudes, open zone growth via y-point lowering, and interstellar scattering, we show that a wide range of departures from RVM can be modeled well while retaining a geometrical picture. We illustrate these effects by fitti…
The recently constructed theory of radio wave propagation in the pulsar magnetosphere outlines the general aspects of the radio light curve and polarization formation. It allows us to describe general properties of mean profiles, such as the position angle ($PA$) of the linear polarization, and the circular polarization for the realistic structure of the pair creation region in the pulsar magnetosphere. In this work, we present an application of the radio wave propagation theory to the radio observations of pulsar PSR J1906+0746. This pulsar is particularly interesting because observations of …
The observed polarization of radio pulsars involves several peculiar effects, such as comparable amount of orthogonal polarization modes (OPMs) which often bear the same handedness of circular polarisation V. In the average profiles of B1913+16 and B1933+16, orthogonal jumps of polarization angle (PA) are observed to occur at the maximum V, instead of V = 0. High levels of V are also observed in core components (eg. in B1237+25), where they are accompanied by strong distortions of PA from the rotating vector model. In weakly polarized emission, PA jumps by 45 deg are observed in B1919+21 and B…
POLAR is a dedicated Gamma-Ray Burst polarimeter making use of Compton-scattering which took data from the second Chinese spacelab, the Tiangong-2 from September 2016 to April 2017. It has a wide Field of View of $\sim6$ steradians and an effective area of $\sim400\ cm^2$ at 300 keV. These features make it one of the most sensitive instruments in its energy range (15-500 keV), and therefore capable of almost continuously monitoring persistent sources such as pulsars. Significant folded pulsation from both PSR B0531+21 (the Crab Pulsar) and PSR B1509-58 has been observed. Observations of the Cr…
Traditional pulsar polarization sweep analysis starts from the point dipole rotating vector model (RVM) approximation. If augmented by a measurement of the sweep phase shift, one obtains an estimate of the emission altitude (Blaskiewicz, Cordes, & Wasserman). However, a more realistic treatment of field line sweepback and finite altitude effects shows that this estimate breaks down at modest altitude ~ 0.1R_{LC}. Such radio emission altitudes turn out to be relevant to the young energetic and millisecond pulsars that dominate the γ-ray population. We quantify the breakdown height as a function…
Meterwavelength Single-pulse Polarimetric Emission Survey. VI. Towards understanding the Phenomenon of Pulsar Polarization in Partially Screened Vacuum Gap model
Since the launch of the Fermi telescope more than five years ago, many new gamma-ray pulsars have been discovered with intriguing properties challenging our current understanding of pulsar physics. Observation of the Crab pulsar furnish today a broad band analysis of the pulsed spectrum with phase-resolved variability allowing to refine existing model to explain pulse shape, spectra and polarization properties. The latter gives inside into the geometry of the emitting region as well as on the structure of the magnetic field. Based on an exact analytical solution of the striped wind with finite…
We report on observations of the polarization of optical and γ-ray photons from the Crab nebula and pulsar system using the Galway Astronomical Stokes Polarimeter (GASP), the Hubble Space Telescope/Advanced Camera for Surveys (HST/ACS) and the International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory satellite (Integral). These, when combined with other optical polarization observations, suggest that the polarized optical emission and γ-ray polarization changes in a similar manner. A change in the optical polarization angle has been observed by this work, from 109.5 \pm 0.7°in 2005 to 85.3 \pm 1.4 °in 2…
Our previous paper outlined the general aspects of the theory of radio light curve and polarization formation for pulsars. We predicted the one-to-one correspondence between the tilt of the linear polarization position angle of the and the circular polarization. However, some of the radio pulsars indicate a clear deviation from that correlation. In this paper we apply the theory of the radio wave propagation in the pulsar magnetosphere for the analysis of individual effects leading to these deviations. We show that within our theory the circular polarization of a given mode can switch its sign…
We report the detection of the pulsed signal of the radio-quiet magnetar-like pulsar PSR J1846-0258 in the high-energy \gr-ray data of the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi LAT). We produced phase-coherent timing models exploiting RXTE PCA and Swift XRT monitoring data for the post- (magnetar-like) outburst period from 2007 August 28 to 2016 September 4, with independent verification using INTEGRAL ISGRI and Fermi GBM data. Phase-folding barycentric arrival times of selected Fermi LAT events from PSR J1846-0258, resulted in a 4.2 sigma detection (30--100 MeV) of a broad pulse consistent in sha…
Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are a new kind of extragalactic radio transients. Some of them show repeating behaviors. Recent observations indicate that a few repeating FRBs (e.g., FRB 121102) present time--frequency downward drifting patterns and nearly 100$\%$ linear polarization. Following the model of \citet{dai 2016} who proposed that repeating FRBs may originate from a slowly-rotating, old-aged pulsar colliding with an asteroid belt around a stellar-mass object, we focus on the prediction of time--frequency drifting and polarization. In this scenario, the frequency drifting is mainly caused b…
A statistical model for the polarization of pulsar radio emission is enhanced to account for the heavy modulation of the emission, the possible covariance of the Stokes parameters, and the observed asymmetries in the distributions of total intensity, polarization, and fractional polarization by treating the intensities of the orthogonal polarization modes as exponential random variables. The model is used to derive theoretical distributions to compare with what is observed. The resulting distributions are unimodal and generally asymmetric. The unimodality arises from the model's fundamental as…
Polarization is a powerful diagnostic tool to constrain the site of the high-energy pulsed emission and particle acceleration in gamma-ray pulsars. Recent particle-in-cell simulations of pulsar magnetosphere suggest that high-energy emission results from particles accelerated in the equatorial current sheet emitting synchrotron radiation. In this study, we re-examine the simulation data to compute the phase-resolved polarization properties. We find that the emission is mildly polarized and that there is an anticorrelation between the flux and the degree of linear polarization (on-pulse: ~15%, …
Bow shock pulsar wind nebulae are observed with a variety of complex morphologies at different wavelengths, most likely due to differences in the magnetic field strength and pulsar wind geometry. Here we present a detailed analysis, showing how these differences affect the observational properties in these systems, focusing on non-thermal synchrotron emission. By adopting different prescriptions for the local emissivity, on top of the magnetic and flow patterns taken from 3D high-resolution numerical simulations in relativistic MHD, and considering various viewing angles, we try to characteriz…
Interstellar scattering causes broadening and distortion to the mean pulse profiles and polarization position angle (PPA) curves, especially to the pulse profiles observed at lower frequency. This paper has implemented a method to recover the pulse profiles and the PPA curves of five pulsars which have obvious scattered pulse profiles at lower frequency. It reports a simulation to show the scattering and descattering of pulse profiles and PPA curves. As a practical application, lower-frequency profiles and PPA curves of PSR 1356-60, PSR 1831-03, PSR 1838+04, PSR 1859+03, PSR 1946+35 are obtain…
Frequency dependence of pulsar linear polarization is investigated by simulations of emission and propagation processes. Linearly polarized waves are generated through curvature radiation by relativistic particles streaming along curved magnetic field lines, which have ordinary mode (O-mode) and extra-ordinary mode (X-mode) components. As emitted waves propagate outwards, two mode components are separated due to re- fraction of the O mode, and their polarization states are also modified. According to the radius to frequency mapping, low frequency emission is generated from higher magnetosphere…

Radio pulsar polarization exhibits a number of complex phenomena that are classified into the realm of `beyond the rotating vector model' (RVM). It is shown that these effects can be understood in geometrical terms, as a result of coherent and quasi-coherent addition of elliptically polarized natural mode waves. The coherent summation implies that the observed tracks of polarization angle (PA) do not always correspond to the natural propagation mode (NPM) waves. Instead, they are statistical average of coherent sum of the NPM waves, and can be observed at any (and frequency-dependent) distance…

We have developed a model for the polarization of curvature radiation by taking into account the polar-cap-current induced perturbation on the dipolar magnetic field. We present the effects of the polar cap current on the pulsar radio emission in an artificial case when the rotation effects, such as aberration and retardation, are absent. Our model indicates that the intensity components and the polarization angle inflection point can be shifted to either the leading or the trailing side depending upon the prevailing conditions in the viewing geometry, the non-uniformity in source distribution…

It is shown that the time-variability inherent in the ion-proton polar cap leads naturally to growth of Langmuir modes on narrow bundles of magnetic flux lines and that the observed size of micropulses is consistent with the smallest such bundle that can plausibly support the growth of the modes. The polarization of integrated profiles is revisited, specifically, the pi/2 position-angle jumps that are frequently observed accompanied by a zero in polarization. The fact that radiation emitted above ion-proton polar caps is not tangential to the local flux lines but has a finite angular distribut…
We present the polarization profiles of 22 pulsars in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae using observations from the MeerKAT radio telescope at UHF-band (544-1088 MHz) and report precise values of dispersion measure (DM) and rotation measure (RM). We use these measurements to investigate the presence of turbulence in electron density and magnetic fields. The structure function of DM shows a break at $\sim 30$ arcsec ($\sim 0.6$ pc at the distance of 47 Tucanae) that suggests the presence of turbulence in the gas in the cluster driven by the motion of wind-shedding stars. On the other hand, the st…
Pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) are suggested to be acceleration sites of cosmic rays in the Galaxy. While the magnetic field plays an important role in the acceleration process, previous observations of magnetic field configurations of PWNe are rare, particularly for evolved systems. We present a radio polarization study of the "Snail" PWN inside the supernova remnant G327.1-1.1 using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. This PWN is believed to have been recently crushed by the supernova (SN) reverse shock. The radio morphology is composed of a main circular body with a finger-like protrusion. W…
At high-energy gamma-rays (>100 MeV) the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on the Fermi satellite already detected more than 145 rotation-powered pulsars (RPPs), while the number of pulsars seen at soft gamma-rays (20 keV - 30 MeV) remained small. We present a catalogue of 18 non-recycled RPPs from which presently non-thermal pulsed emission has been securely detected at soft gamma-rays above 20 keV, and characterize their pulse profiles and energy spectra. For 14 of them we report new results, (re)analysing mainly data from RXTE, INTEGRAL, XMM-Newton and Chandra. The soft gamma-pulsars are all fast …
Polarization measurements provide strong constraints on models for emission from rotation-powered pulsars. We present multiwavelength polarization predictions showing that measurements over a range of frequencies can be particularly important for constraining the emission location, radiation mechanisms and system geometry. The results assume a generic model for emission from the outer magnetosphere and current sheet in which optical to hard X-ray emission is produced by synchrotron radiation from electron-positron pairs and gamma-ray emission is produced by curvature radiation or synchrotron r…
The key properties of the wave propagation theory in the magntosphere of radio pulsars based on the Kravtsov-Orlov equation are presented. It is shown that for radio pulsars with known circular polarization and the swing of the linear polarization position angle one can determine which mode, ordinary or extraordinary one, forms mainly the mean profile of the radio emission. The comparison of the observational data with the theory predictions demonstrates their good agreement.
