Context: Multiple stellar systems are unique laboratories for astrophysics. Analysis of their orbital dynamics may reveal invaluable information about the physical properties of the participating stars. Unfortunately, there are only a few known and well described multiple systems, this is even more so for systems located outside the Milky Way galaxy. A particularly interesting situation occurs when the inner binary in a compact triple system is eclipsing. This is because the stellar interaction, typically resulting in precession of orbital planes, may be observable as a variation of depth of the eclipses on a long timescale. Aims: We aim to present a novel method to determine compact triples using publicly available photometric data from large surveys. Here we apply it to eclipsing binaries (EBs) in Magellanic Clouds from OGLE III database. Methods: We analyzed light curves (LCs) of 26121 LMC and 6138 SMC EBs with the goal to identify those for which the orbital inclination varies in time. Archival LCs of the selected systems, when complemented by our own observations with Danish 1.54m telescope, were thoroughly analyzed using the PHOEBE program. Time dependence of the EB's inclination was described using the theory of orbital-plane precession. By observing the parameter-dependence of the precession rate, we were able to constrain the third companion mass and its orbital period around EB. Results: We identified 58 candidates of new compact triples in Magellanic Clouds. This is the largest published sample of such systems so far. Eight of them were analyzed thoroughly and physical parameters of inner binary were determined together with an estimation of basic characteristics of the third star. These data may provide important clues about stellar formation mechanisms for objects with different metalicity than found in our galactic neighborhood.
We present catalog of 26 121 visually inspected eclipsing binary stars identified in the Large Magellanic Cloud during the third phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment. The sample is limited to the out-of-eclipse brightness I < 20 mag. The catalog consists mostly of detached eclipsing binaries - ellipsoidal variables were not included. For stars brighter than I = 18 mag the detection rate of eclipsing binaries is 0.5% and for all stars it falls to 0.2%. The absolute completeness of the whole catalog is about 15% assuming the occurence rate of EBs toward the LMC equal to 1.5%. Am…
We present a census of eclipsing binary systems with classical Cepheid as a component. All such systems known were found in the OGLE collection of classical Cepheids in the Magellanic System. We extend the list of potential candidates adding four new objects found in the OGLE-IV photometric data. One of the new Cepheids in the eclipsing system, OGLE-SMC-CEP-3235, revealed only one eclipse during 15 years of the OGLE photometric monitoring. However, it additionally shows very well pronounced light-time effect indicating that the binarity is real. We also search for the light-time effect in othe…
We present the collection of eclipsing binaries in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, based on the OGLE survey. It contains 48605 systems, 40204 belonging to the LMC and 8401 to the SMC. Out of the total number of the presented binaries, 16374 are the new ones. We present the time-series photometry obtained for the selected objects during the fourth phase of the OGLE project. The catalog has been created using a two step machine learning procedure based on the Random Forest algorithm.
We present a large sample of eclipsing binary stars detected in the Small Magellanic Cloud fields covering about 14 square degrees that have been monitored for eight years during the third phase of the OGLE survey. This is the largest set of such variables containing 6138 objects, of which 777 are contact and 5361 non-contact binaries. The estimated completeness of this sample is around 82%. We analyze the statistical properties of the sample and present selected interesting objects: 32 systems having eccentric orbit with visible apsidal motion, one Transient Eclipsing Binary, ten RS CVn type …
We present an analysis of multi-epoch low-resolution spectrophotometry, complemented by the light curves provided by massive photometric surveys spanning over 100 years, of the symbiotic binary LMC S63. We showed that it is an eclipsing binary with the orbital period of 1050d. We also found evidence of outbursts in history of the white dwarf. If it was a Z-And type outburst, as is most likely, it would be a second such outburst recorded in the Magellanic Cloud symbiotic system. We confirmed that the red giant is enhanced in carbon, and estimated C/O~1.2 by fitting a model atmosphere to the SAL…
The first 100 brightest eclipsing systems from the Small Magellanic Cloud were studied for their period changes. The photometric data from the surveys OGLE-II, OGLE-III, OGLE-IV and MACHO were combined with our new CCD observations obtained using the Danish 1.54-m telescope (La Silla, Chile). Besides the period changes the light curves were also analysed using the program PHOEBE, which provided the physical parameters of both eclipsing components. For 14 of these systems the additional bodies were found, having the orbital periods from 2 to 20 yr and the eccentricities were found to be up to 0…
We present the apsidal motion and light-curve analyses of 21 eccentric eclipsing binaries located in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Most of these systems have never been studied before, hence their orbital and physical properties as well as the apsidal motion parameters are given here for the first time. All the systems are of early spectral type, having orbital periods up to 4 days. The apsidal motion periods were derived to be from 7.2 to 200 yr (OGLE-SMC-ECL-2194 having the shortest apsidal period among known main-sequence systems). The orbital eccentricities are usually rather mild (median of…
We present an analysis of the high-mass eclipsing binary system VV Ori based on photometry from the TESS satellite. The primary star (B1V, 9.5 Msun) shows beta Cephei pulsations and the secondary (B7V, 3.8 Msun) is possibly a slowly-pulsating B star. We detect 51 significant oscillation frequencies, including two multiplets with separations equal to the orbital frequency, indicating that the pulsations are tidally perturbed. We analyse the TESS light curve and published radial velocities to determine the physical properties of the system. Both stars are only the second of their pulsation type …
We present a catalogue of 1768 eclipsing binary stars (EBs) detected in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) by the second generation of the EROS survey (hereinafter EROS-2); 493 of them are new discoveries located in outer regions (out of the central bar) of the LMC. These sources were originally included in a list of candidate classical Cepheids (CCs) extracted from the EROS-2 catalogue on the basis of the period (0.89 $<P_{EROS}<$15.85 days) versus luminosity ($13.39 < \langle B_{EROS}\rangle<17.82$ mag) diagram. After visual inspection of the light curves we reclassified them as eclipsing bina…
We investigate the luminous star ELHC 10 located in the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud, concluding that it is a SB1 long-period eclipsing binary where the main eclipse is produced by an opaque structure hiding the secondary star. For the more luminous component we determine an effective temperature of 6500 $\pm$ 250 $K$, log\,g = 1.0 $\pm$ 0.5 and luminosity 5970 L$_{\sun}$. From the radial velocities of their photospheric lines we calculate a mass function of 7.37 $\pm$ 0.55 M$_{\sun}$. Besides Balmer and forbidden N II emission, we find splitting of metallic lines, characterized by strong…
This paper presents the first distance measurement to the massive, semi-detached, eclipsing binary LMC-SC1-105, located in the LH 81 association of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Previously determined parameters of the system are combined with new near-infrared photometry and a new temperature analysis to constrain the reddening toward the system, and determine a distance of 50.6+/-1.6 kpc (corresponding to a distance modulus of 18.52+/-0.07 mag), in agreement with previous eclipsing binary measurements. This is the sixth distance measurement to an eclipsing binary in the LMC, although the …
We present a determination of precise fundamental physical parameters of twenty detached, double- lined, eclipsing binary stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) containing G- or early K-type giant stars. Eleven are new systems, the remaining nine are systems already analyzed by our team for which we present updated parameters. The catalogue results from our long-term survey of eclipsing binaries in the Magellanic Clouds suitable for high-precision determination of distances (the Araucaria project). The V-band brightnesses of the systems range from 15.4 mag to 17.7 mag and their orbital peri…
We performed a new and accurate fit of light and radial velocity curves of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Cepheid --OGLE-LMC-CEP-0227-- belonging to a detached double-lined eclipsing binary system. We computed several sets of nonlinear, convective models covering a broad range in stellar mass, effective temperature and in chemical composition. The comparison between theory and observations indicates that current theoretical framework accounts for luminosity --V and I band-- and radial velocity variations over the entire pulsation cycle. Predicted pulsation mass --M=4.14+-0.06 Mo-- and mean e…
We present an analysis of a new detached eclipsing binary, OGLE-LMC-ECL-25658, in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The system consists of two late G-type giant stars on an eccentric orbit and orbital period of ~200 days. The system shows total eclipses and the components have similar temperatures, making it ideal for a precise distance determination. Using multi-color photometric and high resolution spectroscopic data, we have performed an analysis of light and radial velocity curves simultaneously using the Wilson Devinney code. We derived orbital and physical parameters of the binary with a high …
We present high-speed photometry covering one eclipse of the cataclysmic variable system 1RXS J180834.7+101041. The data are modelled as arising from a close binary system containing a low-mass stars filling its Roche lobe plus a white dwarf with an accretion disc. We find an orbital inclination of 77.07 +/- 0.47 degrees and a mass ratio of 0.168 +/- 0.016. The relatively low inclination means that only the accretion disc and not the white dwarf are eclipsed by the low-mass star in this system.
We propose a procedure for light-curve solution of eclipsing binary stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud for which photometric data have been obtained in the framework of the OGLE project as well as way of determination of the global stellar parameters on the basis of the obtained solutions, some empirical relations as well as the distance to the SMC. Several examples illustrate this procedure.
We present a distance determination to the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) based on an analysis of four detached, long period, late type eclipsing binaries discovered by the OGLE Survey. The components of the binaries show negligible intrinsic variability. A consistent set of stellar parameters was derived with low statistical and systematic uncertainty. The absolute dimensions of the stars are calculated with a precision of better than 3%. The surface brightness - infrared color relation was used to derive the distance to each binary. The four systems clump around a distance modulus of (m - M)=1…
We present a detailed study of the classical Cepheid in the double-lined, highly eccentric eclipsing binary system OGLE-LMC562.05.9009. The Cepheid is a fundamental mode pulsator with a period of 2.988 days. The orbital period of the system is 1550 days. Using spectroscopic data from three 4-8-m telescopes and photometry spanning 22 years, we were able to derive the dynamical masses and radii of both stars with exquisite accuracy. Both stars in the system are very similar in mass, radius and color, but the companion is a stable, non-pulsating star. The Cepheid is slightly more massive and bigg…
The advent of large scale multi-epoch surveys raises the need for automated light curve (LC) processing. This is particularly true for eclipsing binaries (EBs), which form one of the most populated types of variable objects. The Gaia mission, launched at the end of 2013, is expected to detect of the order of few million EBs over a 5-year mission. We present an automated procedure to characterize EBs based on the geometric morphology of their LCs with two aims: first to study an ensemble of EBs on a statistical ground without the need to model the binary system, and second to enable the automat…
We have analyzed the long period, double-lined eclipsing binary system OGLE SMC113.3 4007 (SC10 137844) in the SMC. The binary lies in the north-eastern part of the galaxy and consists of two evolved, well detached, non-active G8 giants. The orbit is eccentric with e = 0.311 and the orbital period is 371.6 days. Using extensive high-resolution spectroscopic and multi-color photometric data we have determined a true distance modulus of the system of m-M=18.83 +/- 0.02 (statistical) +/- 0.05 (systematic) mag using a surface brightness - color relation for giant stars. This method is very insensi…
We present first results of a comprehensive photometric O-star survey performed with a robotic twin refractor at the Universitätssternwarte Bochum located near Cerro Armazones in Chile. For three high-mass stars, namely Pismis24-1, CPD-518946 and HD319702, we determined the period through the Lafler-Kinman algorithm and model the light curves within the framework of the Roche geometry. For Pismis24-1, a previously known eclipsing binary, we provide first light curves and determined a photometric period of 2.36 days together with an orbital inclination of 61.8 degrees. The best-fitting model so…
Aim: Our purpose is to provide reliable stellar parameters for a significant sample of eclipsing binaries, which are representative of a whole dwarf and metal-poor galaxy. We also aim at providing a new estimate of the mean distance to the SMC and of its depth along the line of sight for the observed field of view. Method: We use radial velocity curves obtained with the ESO FLAMES facility at the VLT and light curves from the OGLE-II photometric survey. The radial velocities were obtained by least-squares fits of the observed spectra to synthetic ones, excluding the hydrogen Balmer lines. Resu…
We present a new Bayesian approach to constrain the intrinsic parameters (stellar mass, age) of the eclipsing binary system CEP0227 in the LMC. We computed evolutionary models covering a broad range in chemical compositions and in stellar mass. Independent sets of models were constructed either by neglecting or by including a moderate convective core overshooting (beta=0.2) during central H-burning phases. Models were also constructed either by neglecting or by assuming a canonical (eta=0.4,0.8) or an enhanced (eta=4) mass loss rate. The solutions were computed in three different planes: lumin…
We present the largest collection of RR Lyrae stars in the Magellanic System and in its foreground. The sample consists of 45 451 RR Lyr stars, of which 39 082 were detected toward the Large Magellanic Cloud and 6369 toward the Small Magellanic Cloud. We provide long-term time-series photometric measurements collected during the fourth phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-IV). We discuss several potential astrophysical applications of our collection: investigation of the structure of the Magellanic Clouds and the Galactic halo, studies of the globular clusters in the Mag…
Motivated by the detection of a recent outburst of the massive luminous blue variable LMC-R71, which reached an absolute magnitude M_V = -9.3 mag, we undertook a systematic study of the optical variability of 1268 massive stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud, using a recent catalog by Bonanos et al. (2009) as the input. The ASAS All Star Catalog (Pojmanski 2002) provided well-sampled light curves of these bright stars spanning 10 years. Combining the two catalogs resulted in 599 matches, on which we performed a variability search. We identified 117 variable stars, 38 of which were not known bef…
We present a new study of late-type eclipsing binary stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) undertaken with the aim of improving the distance determination to this important galaxy. A sample of 10 new detached, double-lined eclipsing binaries indentified from the OGLE variable star catalogues and consisting of F- and G-type giant components has been analysed. The absolute physical parameters of the individual components have been measured with a typical accuracy of better than 3%. All but one of the systems consist of young and intermediate population stars with masses in the range of 1.4 t…
V907 Scorpii is a unique triple system in which the inner binary component has been reported to have switched on and off eclipses several times in modern history. In spite of its peculiarity, observational data on this system are surprisingly scarce. Here we make use of the recent Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite observations, as well as our own photometric and spectroscopic data, to expand the overall data set and study the V907 Sco system in more detail. Our analysis provides both new and improved values for several of its fundamental parameters: (i) the masses of the stars in the eclip…
The CCD photometric observations of the eclipsing binary PS Persei (PS Per) were obtained on two consecutive days in 2009. The 2003 version Wilson-Devinney code was used to analyze the first complete light curves in $V$ and $R$ bands. It is found that PS Per is a short-period Algol-type binary with the less massive component accurately filling its inner critical Roche lobe. The mass ratio of $q=0.518$ and the orbital inclination of $i=89.^{\circ}86$ are obtained. On the other hand, based on all available times of primary light minimum including two new ones, the orbital period has been improve…
Massive stars at low metallicity are among the main feedback agents in the early Universe and in present-day star forming galaxies. When in binaries, these stars are potential progenitors of gravitational-wave events. Knowledge of stellar masses is a prerequisite to understanding evolution and feedback of low-metallicity massive stars. Using abundant spectroscopic and photometric measurements of an outstandingly bright eclipsing binary, we compare its dynamic, spectroscopic, and evolutionary mass estimates and develop a binary evolution scenario. We comprehensively studied the eclipsing binary…

MASTER OT J190519.41+301524.4 was discovered as an optical transient of 15.7m by the Mobile Astronomical System of TElescope-Robots in March 2014. We report the results of photometric observations of this variable performed at Lajatico Astronomical Center in June-July 2015. The light curve is showing deep V-shaped eclipses with an amplitude of two magnitudes. The orbital period was determined to be 0.129694 d (3.113 h). Based on the archival observations and the shape of the orbital curve we suggest that MASTER OT J190519.41+301524.4 is a new cataclysmic variable of VY Scl type ("anti-nova") w…
We report the very first analysis of 27 eclipsing binary systems with high eccentricities that sometimes reach up to 0.8. The orbital periods for these systems range from 1.4 to 37 days, and the median of the sample is 10.3 days. Star CzeV3392 (= UCAC4 623 022784), for example, currently is the eclipsing system with the highest eccentricity (e = 0.22) of stars with a period shorter than 1.5 days. We analysed the light curves of all 27 systems and obtained the physical parameters of both components, such as relative radii, inclinations, or relative luminosities. The most important parameters ap…
We search for systems hosting eclipsing discs using a complete sample of eclipsing binaries (EBs); those previously identified in the third phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-III). Within a subsample of 2,823 high-cadence, high-photometric precision and large eclipsing depth detached EBs previously identified in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), we find that the skewness and kurtosis of the light curves magnitude distribution within the primary eclipse can distinguish EBs hosting a disc from those without. Two systems with previously identified eclipsing discs (OGLE-LM…
In order to understand the rates and properties of Type Ia and Type Ib/c supernovae, X-ray binaries, gravitational wave sources, and gamma ray bursts as a function of galactic environment and cosmic age, it is imperative that we measure how the close binary properties of O and B-type stars vary with metallicity. We have studied eclipsing binaries with early-B main-sequence primaries in three galaxies with different metallicities: the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC, respectively) as well as the Milky Way (MW). The observed fractions of early-B stars which exhibit deep eclipses 0…
Stellar activity is ubiquitous in late-type stars. The special geometry of eclipsing binary systems is particularly advantageous to study the stellar surfaces and activity. We present a detailed study of the 145 d CoRoT light curve of the short-period eclipsing binary CoRoT 105895502. By means of light-curve modeling with Nightfall, we determine the orbital period, effective temperature, Roche-lobe filling factors, mass ratio, and orbital inclination of CoRoT 105895502 and analyze the temporal behavior of starspots in the system. Our analysis shows one comparably short-lived (about 40 d) stars…
Time-series photometry of the CoRoT field SRa01 was carried out with the Berlin Exoplanet Search Telescope II (BEST II) in 2008/2009. A total of 1,161 variable stars were detected, of which 241 were previously known and 920 are newly found. Several new, variable young stellar objects have been discovered. The study of the spatial distribution of eclipsing binaries revealed the higher relative frequency of Algols toward the center of the young open cluster NGC 2264. In general Algol frequency obeys an isotropic distribution of their angular momentum vectors, except inside the cluster, where a s…
The eclipsing polar CSS081231 turned bright (V_max ~ 14.5) in late 2008 and was subsequently observed intensively with small and medium-sized telescopes. A homogeneous analysis of this comprehensive dataset comprising 109 eclipse epochs is presented and a linear ephemeris covering the five years of observations, about 24000 orbital cycles, is derived. Formally this sets rather tight constraints on the mass of a hypothetical circumbinary planet, M_pl <= 2 M_Jup. This preliminary result needs consolidation by long-term monitoring of the source. The eclipse lasts 433.08 +- 0.65 s, and the orbital…
Classical Cepheids are key probes of both stellar astrophysics and cosmology as standard candles and pulsating variable stars. It is important to understand Cepheids in unprecedented detail in preparation for upcoming GAIA, JWST and extremely-large telescope observations. Cepheid eclipsing binary stars are ideal tools for achieving this goal, however there are currently only three known systems. One of those systems, OGLE-LMC-CEP1812, raises new questions about the evolution of classical Cepheids because of an apparent age discrepancy between the Cepheid and its red giant companion. We show th…
We report the discovery of a compact triply eclipsing triple star system in the southern continuous viewing zone of the TESS space telescope. TIC 278825952 is a previously unstudied, circular eclipsing binary with a period of 4.781 days with a tertiary component in a wider, circular orbit of 235.55 days period that was found from three sets of third-body eclipses and from light travel-time effect dominated eclipse timing variations. We performed a joint photodynamical analysis of the eclipse timing variation curves, photometric data, and the spectral energy distribution, coupled with the use o…
Detached eclipsing binaries are a fundamental tool for measuring the physical parameters of stars that are effectively evolving in isolation. Starting from more than 40,000 eclipsing binary candidates identified by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN), we use PHOEBE to determine the sum of the fractional radii, the ratio of effective temperatures, the inclinations, and the eccentricities for 35,464 systems. We visually inspect all the light curve models to verify the model fits and examine the TESS light curves, when available, to select systems with evidence for additional ph…
We present a variability study of 4646 massive stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) with known spectral types from the catalog of Bonanos et al. (2010) using the light curves from the OGLE-III database. The goal is to exploit the time domain information available through OGLE-III to gain insight into the processes that govern the evolution of massive stars. This variability survey of massive stars with known spectral types is larger than any previous survey by a factor of 7. We find that 60% of our sample (2766 stars) show no significant variability and 40% (1880 stars) exhibit variabilit…
We present results of new photometry for the globular star cluster NGC 2155 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Our I- and V-band observations were obtained with the 6.5-meter Magellan 1 Baade Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory resulting in deep photometry down to V ~ 24 mag. By analyzing the color-magnitude diagram for the cluster and utilizing the Victoria-Regina grid of isochrones models we estimated the age of the cluster at ~ 2.25 Gyr and [Fe/H]=-0.71, the numbers which place NGC 2155 outside the age-gap in the age-metallicity relation for LMC clusters. Using the Difference Image Anal…
Context. The nearby multiple system delta Velorum contains a widely detached eclipsing binary and a third component. Aims. We take advantage of this system offering the opportunity to determine the set of fundamental parameters (masses, luminosities, and radii) of three coeval stars with sufficient precision to test models of stellar evolution. Methods. Extensive high-resolution spectroscopy is analyzed by the broadening function technique to provide the first spectroscopic orbit of the eclipsing pair. Simultaneous analysis of the spectroscopic data and the SMEI satellite light curve is perfor…
Aims: The Danish 1.54-meter telescope at the La Silla observatory was used for photometric monitoring of selected eccentric eclipsing binaries located in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The new times of minima were derived for these systems, which are needed for accurate determination of the apsidal motion. Moreover, many new times of minima were derived from the photometric databases OGLE and MACHO. Eighteen early-type eccentric-orbit eclipsing binaries were studied. Methods: Their (O-C) diagrams of minima timings were analysed and the parameters of the apsidal motion were obtained. The light cur…
We announce the discovery of pulsations in HD 23642, the only bright eclipsing system in the Pleiades, based on light curves from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). We measure 46 pulsation frequencies and attribute them to delta Scuti pulsations in the secondary component. We find four l=1 doublets, three of which have frequency splittings consistent with the rotation rate of the star. The dipole mode amplitude ratios are consistent with a high stellar inclination angle and the stellar rotation period agrees with the orbital period. Together, these suggest that the spin axis of …
This is the second in a series of papers studying the variable stars in Large Magellanic Cloud globular clusters. The primary goal of this series is to study how RR Lyrae stars in Oosterhoff-intermediate systems compare to their counterparts in Oosterhoff I/II systems. In this paper, we present the results of our new time-series BV photometeric study of the globular cluster NGC 1786. A total of 65 variable stars were identified in our field of view. These variables include 53 RR Lyraes (27 RRab, 18 RRc, and 8 RRd), 3 classical Cepheids, 1 Type II Cepheid, 1 Anomalous Cepheid, 2 eclipsing binar…
Compact Hierarchical Triples (CHT) are systems with the tertiary star orbiting the inner binary in an orbit shorter than 1000 days. CHT with an eclipsing binary as its inner binary can help us extract a multitude of information about all three stars in the system. In this study, we use independent observational techniques to estimate the orbital, stellar, and atmospheric parameters of two triple-lined CHT: BD+442258 and KIC06525196. We find that the masses of stars in BD+442258 are $1.011\pm0.029 M_{\odot}$, $0.941\pm0.033 M_{\odot}$, and $0.907\pm0.065 M_{\odot}$ while in KIC06525196 the esti…
We calculated physical and orbital properties for 2M06464003+0109157, a 1.06 day eclipsing double lined spectroscopic binary. We modelled the system's ASAS-SN and TESS light curves, measuring the system's inclination and radii of each component. Extracting radial velocities for each component from 6 SDSS/APOGEE spectra, we measured the system's mass ratio and performed a full orbital fit. Our analysis indicates that 2M06464003+0109157 has components with nearly equal masses ($m_1/m_2 =0.99 \pm 0.01$; $M_1{_,}{_2} = 0.57 \pm 0.015$ M$_\odot$) and comparable radii ($R_1 = 0.66 \pm 0.05$ R$_\odot…
We present the first results from the SAGE-Var program, a follow on to the Spitzer legacy program Surveying the Agents of Galaxy Evolution (SAGE; Meixner, et al. 2006). We obtained 4 epochs of photometry at 3.6 & 4.5 microns covering the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the central region of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) in order to probe the variability of extremely red sources missed by variability surveys conducted at shorter wavelengths, and to provide additional epochs of observation for known variables. Our 6 total epochs of observations allow us to probe infrared variabili…
Westerlund 1 is a young, massive Galactic starburst cluster that contains a rich coeval population of Wolf-Rayet stars, hot- and cool-phase transitional supergiants, and a magnetar. We use spectroscopic and photometric observations of the eclipsing double-lined binary W13 to derive dynamical masses for the two components, in order to determine limits for the progenitor masses of the magnetar CXOU J164710.2-455216 and the population of evolved stars in Wd1. W13 has an orbital period of 9.2709+/-0.0015 days and near-contact configuration. The shallow photometric eclipse rules out an inclination …
We analyse the Catalina Real-time Transient Survey light curves of 835 spectroscopically confirmed white dwarf plus main-sequence binaries from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) with g<19, in search of new eclipsing systems. We identify 29 eclipsing systems, 12 of which were previously unknown. This brings the total number of eclipsing white dwarf plus main-sequence binaries to 49. Our set of new eclipsing systems contains two with periods of 1.9 and 2.3 days making them the longest period eclipsing white dwarf binaries known. We also identify one system which shows very large ellipsoidal mo…
Analyzing the available photometry from the Kepler satellite and other databases, we performed detailed light curve modeling of 10 eclipsing binary systems that were found to exhibit a periodic modulation of their orbital periods. All of the selected systems are detached Algol type, with orbital periods from 0.9 to 2.9 days. In total, 9448 times of minimum for these binaries were analyzed in an attempt to identify the period variations caused by the third bodies in these systems. The well-known method of the light-travel time effect was used for the analysis. The orbital periods of the outer b…
The third part of the OGLE-III Catalog of Variable Stars comprises 24906 RR Lyr stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). This sample consists of 17693 fundamental-mode (RRab), 4958 first-overtone (RRc), 986 double-mode (RRd) and 1269 suspected second-overtone (RRe) pulsators. 66 objects are foreground Galactic RR Lyr stars. The catalog data include basic photometric and astrometric properties of these RR Lyr stars, multi-epoch VI photometry and finding charts. We detected one new RR Lyr star with additional eclipsing variations. The spatial distribution of RR Lyr stars in the LMC is distinct…
We have used high-resolution spectroscopy to observe the Kepler-16 eclipsing binary as a double-lined system, and measure precise radial velocities for both stellar components. These velocities yield a dynamical mass-ratio of q=0.2994+-0.0031. When combined with the inclination, i=90.3401+0.0016-0.0019 deg, measured from the Kepler photometric data by Doyle et al. 2011, we derive dynamical masses for the Kepler-16 components of M_A=0.654+-0.017 M_sun and M_B=0.1959+-0.0031 M_sun, a precision of 2.5% and 1.5% respectively. Our results confirm at the ~2% level the mass-ratio derived by Doyle et …
