Removing blur caused by camera shake in images has always been a challenging problem in computer vision literature due to its ill-posed nature. Motion blur caused due to the relative motion between the camera and the object in 3D space induces a spatially varying blurring effect over the entire image. In this paper, we propose a novel deep filter based on Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) architecture integrated with global skip connection and dense architecture in order to tackle this problem. Our model, while bypassing the process of blur kernel estimation, significantly reduces the test time which is necessary for practical applications. The experiments on the benchmark datasets prove the effectiveness of the proposed method which outperforms the state-of-the-art blind deblurring algorithms both quantitatively and qualitatively.

Blind motion deblurring is one of the most basic and challenging problems in image processing and computer vision. It aims to recover a sharp image from its blurred version knowing nothing about the blur process. Many existing methods use Maximum A Posteriori (MAP) or Expectation Maximization (EM) frameworks to deal with this kind of problems, but they cannot handle well the figh frequency features of natural images. Most recently, deep neural networks have been emerging as a powerful tool for image deblurring. In this paper, we prove that encoder-decoder architecture gives better results for …
While working with fingerprint images acquired from crime scenes, mobile cameras, or low-quality sensors, it becomes difficult for automated identification systems to verify the identity due to image blur and distortion. We propose a fingerprint deblurring model FDeblur-GAN, based on the conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (cGANs) and multi-stage framework of the stack GAN. Additionally, we integrate two auxiliary sub-networks into the model for the deblurring task. The first sub-network is a ridge extractor model. It is added to generate ridge maps to ensure that fingerprint informati…
In this paper, we present a Fast Motion Deblurring-Conditional Generative Adversarial Network (FMD-cGAN) that helps in blind motion deblurring of a single image. FMD-cGAN delivers impressive structural similarity and visual appearance after deblurring an image. Like other deep neural network architectures, GANs also suffer from large model size (parameters) and computations. It is not easy to deploy the model on resource constraint devices such as mobile and robotics. With the help of MobileNet based architecture that consists of depthwise separable convolution, we reduce the model size and in…

Low-quality face image restoration is a popular research direction in today's computer vision field. It can be used as a pre-work for tasks such as face detection and face recognition. At present, there is a lot of work to solve the problem of low-quality faces under various environmental conditions. This paper mainly focuses on the restoration of motion-blurred faces. In increasingly abundant mobile scenes, the fast recovery of motion-blurred faces can bring highly effective speed improvements in tasks such as face matching. In order to achieve this goal, a deblurring method for motion-blurre…
Facial image super-resolution (SR) is an important preprocessing for facial image analysis, face recognition, and image-based 3D face reconstruction. Recent convolutional neural network (CNN) based method has shown excellent performance by learning mapping relation using pairs of low-resolution (LR) and high-resolution (HR) facial images. However, since the HR facial image reconstruction using CNN is conventionally aimed to increase the PSNR and SSIM metrics, the reconstructed HR image might not be realistic even with high scores. An adversarial framework is proposed in this study to reconstru…

Camera shake or target movement often leads to undesired blur effects in videos captured by a hand-held camera. Despite significant efforts having been devoted to video-deblur research, two major challenges remain: 1) how to model the spatio-temporal characteristics across both the spatial domain (i.e., image plane) and temporal domain (i.e., neighboring frames), and 2) how to restore sharp image details w.r.t. the conventionally adopted metric of pixel-wise errors. In this paper, to address the first challenge, we propose a DeBLuRring Network (DBLRNet) for spatial-temporal learning by applyin…
This thesis analyzes the challenging problem of Image Deblurring based on classical theorems and state-of-art methods proposed in recent years. By spectral analysis we mathematically show the effective of spectral regularization methods, and point out the linking between the spectral filtering result and the solution of the regularization optimization objective. For ill-posed problems like image deblurring, the optimization objective contains a regularization term (also called the regularization functional) that encodes our prior knowledge into the solution. We demonstrate how to craft a regul…
Recently, end-to-end learning-based methods based on deep neural network (DNN) have been proven effective for blind deblurring. Without human-made assumptions and numerical algorithms, they are able to restore images with fewer artifacts and better perceptual quality. However, in practice, we also find some of their drawbacks. Without the theoretical guidance, these methods can not perform well when the motion is complex and sometimes generate unreasonable results. In this paper, for overcoming these drawbacks, we integrate deep convolution neural networks into conventional deblurring framewor…

In this paper, we introduce an end-to-end generative adversarial network (GAN) based on sparse learning for single image blind motion deblurring, which we called SL-CycleGAN. For the first time in blind motion deblurring, we propose a sparse ResNet-block as a combination of sparse convolution layers and a trainable spatial pooler k-winner based on HTM (Hierarchical Temporal Memory) to replace non-linearity such as ReLU in the ResNet-block of SL-CycleGAN generators. Furthermore, unlike many state-of-the-art GAN-based motion deblurring methods that treat motion deblurring as a linear end-to-end …

Non-uniform blur, mainly caused by camera shake and motions of multiple objects, is one of the most common causes of image quality degradation. However, the traditional blind deblurring methods based on blur kernel estimation do not perform well on complicated non-uniform motion blurs. Recent studies show that GAN-based approaches achieve impressive performance on deblurring tasks. In this letter, to further improve the performance of GAN-based methods on deblurring tasks, we propose an edge heuristic multi-scale generative adversarial network(GAN), which uses the "coarse-to-fine" scheme to re…
We present a new end-to-end generative adversarial network (GAN) for single image motion deblurring, named DeblurGAN-v2, which considerably boosts state-of-the-art deblurring efficiency, quality, and flexibility. DeblurGAN-v2 is based on a relativistic conditional GAN with a double-scale discriminator. For the first time, we introduce the Feature Pyramid Network into deblurring, as a core building block in the generator of DeblurGAN-v2. It can flexibly work with a wide range of backbones, to navigate the balance between performance and efficiency. The plug-in of sophisticated backbones (e.g., …
When sailing at sea, the smart ship will inevitably produce swaying motion due to the action of wind, wave and current, which makes the image collected by the visual sensor appear motion blur. This will have an adverse effect on the object detection algorithm based on the vision sensor, thereby affect the navigation safety of the smart ship. In order to remove the motion blur in the images during the navigation of the smart ship, we propose SharpGAN, a new image deblurring method based on the generative adversarial network. First of all, the Receptive Field Block Net (RFBNet) is introduced to …
Recently, diffusion models have shown remarkable results in image synthesis by gradually removing noise and amplifying signals. Although the simple generative process surprisingly works well, is this the best way to generate image data? For instance, despite the fact that human perception is more sensitive to the low frequencies of an image, diffusion models themselves do not consider any relative importance of each frequency component. Therefore, to incorporate the inductive bias for image data, we propose a novel generative process that synthesizes images in a coarse-to-fine manner. First, w…

Deblurring is the task of restoring a blurred image to a sharp one, retrieving the information lost due to the blur. In blind deblurring we have no information regarding the blur kernel. As deblurring can be considered as an image to image translation task, deep learning based solutions, including the ones which use GAN (Generative Adversarial Network), have been proven effective for deblurring. Most of them have an encoder-decoder structure. Our objective is to try different GAN structures and improve its performance through various modifications to the existing structure for supervised deblu…

PROBE (Progressive Removal of Blur Residual) is a recursive framework for blind deblurring. Using the elementary modified inverse filter at its core, PROBE's experimental performance meets or exceeds the state of the art, both visually and quantitatively. Remarkably, PROBE lends itself to analysis that reveals its convergence properties. PROBE is motivated by recent ideas on progressive blind deblurring, but breaks away from previous research by its simplicity, speed, performance and potential for analysis. PROBE is neither a functional minimization approach, nor an open-loop sequential method…

Solving inverse problems continues to be a challenge in a wide array of applications ranging from deblurring, image inpainting, source separation etc. Most existing techniques solve such inverse problems by either explicitly or implicitly finding the inverse of the model. The former class of techniques require explicit knowledge of the measurement process which can be unrealistic, and rely on strong analytical regularizers to constrain the solution space, which often do not generalize well. The latter approaches have had remarkable success in part due to deep learning, but require a large coll…

Image inpainting aims to restore the missing regions of corrupted images and make the recovery result identical to the originally complete image, which is different from the common generative task emphasizing the naturalness or realism of generated images. Nevertheless, existing works usually regard it as a pure generation problem and employ cutting-edge deep generative techniques to address it. The generative networks can fill the main missing parts with realistic contents but usually distort the local structures or introduce obvious artifacts. In this paper, for the first time, we formulate …

Documents often exhibit various forms of degradation, which make it hard to be read and substantially deteriorate the performance of an OCR system. In this paper, we propose an effective end-to-end framework named Document Enhancement Generative Adversarial Networks (DE-GAN) that uses the conditional GANs (cGANs) to restore severely degraded document images. To the best of our knowledge, this practice has not been studied within the context of generative adversarial deep networks. We demonstrate that, in different tasks (document clean up, binarization, deblurring and watermark removal), DE-GA…
This paper proposes a novel approach to regularize the \textit{ill-posed} and \textit{non-linear} blind image deconvolution (blind deblurring) using deep generative networks as priors. We employ two separate generative models --- one trained to produce sharp images while the other trained to generate blur kernels from lower-dimensional parameters. To deblur, we propose an alternating gradient descent scheme operating in the latent lower-dimensional space of each of the pretrained generative models. Our experiments show promising deblurring results on images even under large blurs, and heavy no…

Video deblurring is a challenging task due to the spatially variant blur caused by camera shake, object motions, and depth variations, etc. Existing methods usually estimate optical flow in the blurry video to align consecutive frames or approximate blur kernels. However, they tend to generate artifacts or cannot effectively remove blur when the estimated optical flow is not accurate. To overcome the limitation of separate optical flow estimation, we propose a Spatio-Temporal Filter Adaptive Network (STFAN) for the alignment and deblurring in a unified framework. The proposed STFAN takes both …
We propose a novel end-to-end learning-based approach for single image defocus deblurring. The proposed approach is equipped with a novel Iterative Filter Adaptive Network (IFAN) that is specifically designed to handle spatially-varying and large defocus blur. For adaptively handling spatially-varying blur, IFAN predicts pixel-wise deblurring filters, which are applied to defocused features of an input image to generate deblurred features. For effectively managing large blur, IFAN models deblurring filters as stacks of small-sized separable filters. Predicted separable deblurring filters are a…

Utilized Residual Dense Network has proven its strengths in superresolution task, thus we selected it as a baseline architecture. We evaluated the proposed solution with state-of-art DNN methods on a benchmark dataset. The proposed method shows significant improvement in image quality measured objectively and subjectively.

We present a new two-stage pipeline for predicting frames of traffic scenes where relevant objects can still reliably be detected. Using a recent video prediction network, we first generate a sequence of future frames based on past frames. A second network then enhances these frames in order to make them appear more realistic. This ensures the quality of the predicted frames to be sufficient to enable accurate detection of objects, which is especially important for autonomously driving cars. To verify this two-stage approach, we conducted experiments on the Cityscapes dataset. For enhancing, w…

Deep neural network approaches to inverse imaging problems have produced impressive results in the last few years. In this paper, we consider the use of generative models in a variational regularisation approach to inverse problems. The considered regularisers penalise images that are far from the range of a generative model that has learned to produce images similar to a training dataset. We name this family \textit{generative regularisers}. The success of generative regularisers depends on the quality of the generative model and so we propose a set of desired criteria to assess generative mo…
Recent road marking recognition has achieved great success in the past few years along with the rapid development of deep learning. Although considerable advances have been made, they are often over-dependent on unrepresentative datasets and constrained conditions. In this paper, to overcome these drawbacks, we propose an alternative method that achieves higher accuracy and generates high-quality samples as data augmentation. With the following two major contributions: 1) The proposed deblurring network can successfully recover a clean road marking from a blurred one by adopting generative adv…

Blind image deblurring, i.e., deblurring without knowledge of the blur kernel, is a highly ill-posed problem. The problem can be solved in two parts: i) estimate a blur kernel from the blurry image, and ii) given estimated blur kernel, de-convolve blurry input to restore the target image. In this paper, we propose a graph-based blind image deblurring algorithm by interpreting an image patch as a signal on a weighted graph. Specifically, we first argue that a skeleton image---a proxy that retains the strong gradients of the target but smooths out the details---can be used to accurately estimate…
Pansharpening is a widely used image enhancement technique for remote sensing. Its principle is to fuse the input high-resolution single-channel panchromatic (PAN) image and low-resolution multi-spectral image and to obtain a high-resolution multi-spectral (HRMS) image. The existing deep learning pansharpening method has two shortcomings. First, features of two input images need to be concatenated along the channel dimension to reconstruct the HRMS image, which makes the importance of PAN images not prominent, and also leads to high computational cost. Second, the implicit information of featu…
We present a novel method and analysis to train generative adversarial networks (GAN) in a stable manner. As shown in recent analysis, training is often undermined by the probability distribution of the data being zero on neighborhoods of the data space. We notice that the distributions of real and generated data should match even when they undergo the same filtering. Therefore, to address the limited support problem we propose to train GANs by using different filtered versions of the real and generated data distributions. In this way, filtering does not prevent the exact matching of the data …

We present a neural network model approach for multi-frame blind deconvolution. The discriminative approach adopts and combines two recent techniques for image deblurring into a single neural network architecture. Our proposed hybrid-architecture combines the explicit prediction of a deconvolution filter and non-trivial averaging of Fourier coefficients in the frequency domain. In order to make full use of the information contained in all images in one burst, the proposed network embeds smaller networks, which explicitly allow the model to transfer information between images in early layers. Blind motion deblurring involves reconstructing a sharp image from an observation that is blurry. It is a problem that is ill-posed and lies in the categories of image restoration problems. The training data-based methods for image deblurring mostly involve training models that take a lot of time. These models are data-hungry i.e., they require a lot of training data to generate satisfactory results. Recently, there are various image feature learning methods developed which relieve us of the need for training data and perform image restoration and image synthesis, e.g., DIP, InGAN, and SinGAN.…

We present a new method for blind motion deblurring that uses a neural network trained to compute estimates of sharp image patches from observations that are blurred by an unknown motion kernel. Instead of regressing directly to patch intensities, this network learns to predict the complex Fourier coefficients of a deconvolution filter to be applied to the input patch for restoration. For inference, we apply the network independently to all overlapping patches in the observed image, and average its outputs to form an initial estimate of the sharp image. We then explicitly estimate a single glo…
In this work, we propose a new approach for efficient edge-preserving image deconvolution. Our algorithm is based on a novel type of explicit image filter - guided filter. The guided filter can be used as an edge-preserving smoothing operator like the popular bilateral filter, but has better behaviors near edges. We propose an efficient iterative algorithm with the decouple of deblurring and denoising steps in the restoration process. In deblurring step, we proposed two cost function which could be computed with fast Fourier transform efficiently. The solution of the first one is used as the g…
In this paper, we address the problem of dynamic scene deblurring in the presence of motion blur. Restoration of images affected by severe blur necessitates a network design with a large receptive field, which existing networks attempt to achieve through simple increment in the number of generic convolution layers, kernel-size, or the scales at which the image is processed. However, increasing the network capacity in this manner comes at the expense of increase in model size and inference speed, and ignoring the non-uniform nature of blur. We present a new architecture composed of spatially ad…
Blind image deblurring (BID) is an ill-posed inverse problem, usually addressed by imposing prior knowledge on the (unknown) image and on the blurring filter. Most of the work on BID has focused on natural images, using image priors based on statistical properties of generic natural images. However, in many applications, it is known that the image being recovered belongs to some specific class (e.g., text, face, fingerprints), and exploiting this knowledge allows obtaining more accurate priors. In this work, we propose a method where a Gaussian mixture model (GMM) is used to learn a class-adap…

There is a growing demand for high-resolution (HR) medical images in both the clinical and research applications. Image quality is inevitably traded off with the acquisition time for better patient comfort, lower examination costs, dose, and fewer motion-induced artifacts. For many image-based tasks, increasing the apparent resolution in the perpendicular plane to produce multi-planar reformats or 3D images is commonly used. Single image super-resolution (SR) is a promising technique to provide HR images based on unsupervised learning to increase resolution of a 2D image, but there are few rep…

In this paper, we propose a novel design of image deblurring in the form of one-shot convolution filtering that can directly convolve with naturally blurred images for restoration. The problem of optical blurring is a common disadvantage to many imaging applications that suffer from optical imperfections.
