Cobimaximal lepton mixing, i.e. $θ_{23} = 45^\circ$ and $δ= \pm 90^\circ$ in the lepton mixing matrix $V$, arises as a consequence of $S V = V^\ast \mathcal{P}$, where $S$ is the permutation matrix that interchanges the second and third rows of $V$ and $\mathcal{P}$ is a diagonal matrix of phase factors. We prove that any such $V$ may be written in the form $V = U R P$, where $U$ is any predefined unitary matrix satisfying $S U = U^\ast$, $R$ is an orthogonal, i.e. real, matrix, and $P$ is a diagonal matrix satisfying $P^2 = \mathcal{P}$. Using this theorem, we demonstrate the equivalence of two ways of constructing models for cobimaximal mixing---one way that uses a standard $CP$ symmetry and a different way that uses a $CP$ symmetry including $μ$--$τ$ interchange. We also present two simple seesaw models to illustrate this equivalence; those models have, in addition to the $CP$ symmetry, flavour symmetries broken softly by the Majorana mass terms of the right-handed neutrino singlets. Since each of the two models needs four scalar doublets, we investigate how to accommodate the Standard Model Higgs particle in them.
I propose a model of radiative charged-lepton and neutrino masses with $A_4$ symmetry. The soft breaking of $A_4$ to $Z_3$ lepton triality is accomplished by dimension-three terms. The breaking of $Z_3$ by dimension-two terms allow cobimaximal neutrino mixing $(θ_{13} \neq 0, θ_{23} = π/4, δ_{CP} = \pm π/2)$ to be realized with only very small finite calculable deviations from the residual lepton triality. This construction solves a long-standing technical problem inherent in renormalizable $A_4$ models since their inception.
We propose a simple framework based on $Δ(27)$ that leads to the successful cobimaximal lepton mixing ansatz, thus providing a predictive explanation for leptonic mixing observables. We explore first the effective neutrino mass operators, then present a specific model realization based on type I seesaw, and also propose a model with radiative 1-loop seesaw which features viable dark matter candidates.
In the context of $SU(3)_C \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y \times U(1)_χ$, where $U(1)_χ$ comes from $SO(10) \to SU(5) \times U(1)_χ$, supplemented by the non-Abelian discrete $Δ(27)$ symmetry for three lepton families, Dirac neutrino masses and their mixing are radiatively generated through dark matter. The gauge $U(1)_χ$ symmetry is broken spontaneously. The discrete $Δ(27)$ symmetry is broken softly and spontaneously. Together, they result in two residual symmetries, a global $U(1)_L$ lepton number and a dark symmetry, which may be $Z_2$, $Z_3$, or $U(1)_D$ depending on what scalar breaks $U(1…
It has recently been shown that the phenomenologically successful pattern of cobimaximal neutrino mixing ($θ_{13} \neq 0$, $θ_{23} = π/4$, and $δ_{CP} = \pm π/2$) may be achieved in the context of the non-Abelian discrete symmetry $A_4$. In this paper, the same goal is achieved with $S_3 \times Z_2$. The residual lepton $Z_3$ triality in the case of $A_4$ is replaced here by $Z_2 \times Z_2$. The associated phenomenology of the scalar sector is discussed.

Choosing how gauge $U(1)_χ$ breaks in the context of $SO(10) \to SU(5) \times U(1)_χ$, $Z_4$ lepton number may be obtained which maintains neutrinos as Dirac fermions. Choosing $Δ(27)$ as the family symmetry of leptons, tree-level Dirac neutrino masses may be forbidden. Choosing a specific set of self-interacting dark-matter particles, Dirac neutrino masses and mixing may then be generated in two loops. This framework allows the realization of cobimaximal neutrino mixing, i.e. $θ_{13} \neq 0$, $θ_{23} = π/4$, $δ_{CP} = \pm π/2$, as well as the desirable feature that the light scalar mediator o…
A radiative model of quark and lepton masses utilizing the binary tetrahedral ($T^{\prime}$) flavor symmetry, or horizontal symmetry, is proposed which produces the first two generation of quark masses through their interactions with vector-like quarks that carry charges under an additional $U(1)$. By softly-breaking the $T^{\prime}$ to a residual $Z_4$ through the vector-like quark masses, a CKM mixing angle close to the Cabibbo angle is produced. In order to generate the cobimaximal neutrino oscillation pattern ($θ_{13}\neq0,θ_{23}=π/4,δ_{CP}=\pm π/2$) and protect the horizontal symmetry fro…
Two Higgs-doublet models usually consider an ad-hoc $\mathbb{Z}_2$ discrete symmetry to avoid flavor changing neutral currents. We consider a new class of two Higgs-doublet models where $\mathbb{Z}_2$ is enlarged to the symmetry group ${\cal{F}}\rtimes \mathbb{Z}_2$, i.e. an inner semi-direct product of a discrete symmetry group ${\cal{F}}$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2$. In such a scenario the symmetry constrains the Yukawa interactions but goes unnoticed by the scalar sector. In the most minimal scenario, $\mathbb{Z}_3 \rtimes \mathbb{Z}_2 = D_3$, flavor changing neutral currents mediated by scalars are…
We propose a 3+1 Higgs Doublet Model based on the $Δ(27)$ family symmetry supplemented by several auxiliary cyclic symmetries leading to viable Yukawa textures for the Standard Model fermions, consistent with the observed pattern of fermion masses and mixings. The charged fermion mass hierarchy and the quark mixing pattern is generated by the spontaneous breaking of the discrete symmetries due to flavons that act as Froggatt-Nielsen fields. The tiny neutrino masses arise from a radiative seesaw mechanism at one loop level, thanks to a preserved $Z_2^{\left( 1\right)}$ discrete symmetry, which …
A soft-wall warped extra dimension allows one to relax the tight constraints imposed by electroweak data in conventional Randall-Sundrum models. We investigate a setup, where the lepton flavour structure of the Standard Model is realised by split fermion locations. Bulk fermions with general locations are not analytically tractable in a soft-wall background, so we follow a numerical approach to perform the Kaluza-Klein reduction. Lepton flavour violation is induced by the exchange of Kaluza-Klein gauge bosons. We find that rates for processes such as muon-electron conversion are significantly …
We evaluate the decays $\ell_1^\pm \to \ell_2^\pm γ$, $Z \to \ell_1^+ \ell_2^-$, and $h \to \ell_1^+ \ell_2^-$, where $\ell_1$ and $\ell_2$ are charged leptons with different flavours and $h$ is the scalar particle with mass 125.25 GeV, in a two-Higgs-doublet model where all the Yukawa-coupling matrices conserve the lepton flavours but the Majorana mass terms of the right-handed neutrinos break the flavour lepton numbers. We find that (1) the decays $\ell_1^\pm \to \ell_2^\pm γ$ require large Yukawa couplings and very light right-handed neutrinos in order to be visible, (2) the decays $Z \to \…
We consider the one-loop radiative corrections to the light-neutrino mass matrix and their consequences for the predicted branching ratios of the five lepton-flavour-violating decays $\ell_1^- \to \ell_2^- \ell_3^+ \ell_3^-$ in a two-Higgs-doublet model furnished with the type-I seesaw mechanism and soft lepton-flavour violation. We find that the radiative corrections are very significant; they may alter the predicted branching ratios by several orders of magnitude and, in particular, they may help explain why $\mbox{BR}(μ^- \to e^- e^+ e^-)$ is strongly suppressed relative to the branching ra…
We consider a two-Higgs-doublet extension of the Standard Model, with three right-handed neutrino singlets and the seesaw mechanism, wherein all the Yukawa-coupling matrices are lepton flavour-diagonal and lepton flavour violation is soft, originating solely in the non-flavour-diagonal Majorana mass matrix of the right-handed neutrinos. We consider the limit $m_R \to \infty$ of this model, where $m_R$ is the seesaw scale. We demonstrate that there is a region in parameter space where the branching ratios of all five charged-lepton decays $\ell_1^- \to \ell_2^- \ell_3^+ \ell_3^-$ are close to t…
We present a feasibility study, to search for dark matter at the LHC, in events with one soft hadronically decaying tau lepton and missing transverse energy recoiling against a hard $p_{T}$ jet from initial state radiation. This methodology allows the search for Supersymmetry in compressed mass spectra regions, where the mass difference between the lightest neutralino, $\tildeχ_1^0$, and the stau (the tau superpartner), $\tildeτ$, is small. Several theoretical models predict a direct connection between thermal Bino dark matter and staus within this scenario. We show that compressed regions, no…
The Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) can be extended to include non-holomorphic trilinear soft supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking interactions that may have distinct signatures. We consider non-vanishing off-diagonal entries of the coupling matrices associated with holomorphic (of MSSM) and non-holomorphic trilinear terms corresponding to sleptons with elements $A^l_{ij}$ and $A^{\prime l}_{ij}$. We first improve the MSSM charge breaking minima condition of the vacuum to include the off-diagonal entries $A^l_{ij}$ (with $i \neq j$). We further extend this analysis for non-holomorphic tr…
We study the predictions for sfermion masses and Lepton Flavour Violation (LFV) for the WMAP preferred parameter space in $b-τ$ Yukawa-unified models with massive neutrinos. A soft term structure as predicted by an Abelian flavour symmetry combined with SU(5) RGEs for scales above $M_{GUT}$, results to an efficient suppression of the off-diagonal terms in the scalar soft matrices, particularly for $m_0< 100$ GeV. Using the WMAP bounds, this implies $35\le\tanβ\le 45$, $350\,\mathrm{GeV}\le m_{1/2}\le 1\,\mathrm{TeV}$, with the higher $\tanβ$ values being favored. Within this framework, SU(5) u…
Soft leptogenesis is a scenario in which the cosmic baryon asymmetry is produced from a lepton asymmetry generated in the decays of heavy sneutrinos (the partners of the singlet neutrinos of the seesaw) and where the relevant sources of CP violation are the complex phases of soft supersymmetry-breaking terms. We explain the motivations for soft leptogenesis, and review its basic ingredients: the different CP-violating contributions, the crucial role played by thermal corrections, and the enhancement of the efficiency from lepton flavour effects. We also discuss the high temperature regime $T >…
Successful Soft Leptogenesis (SL) requires a relatively low mass scale for the SU(2) singlet neutrinos of $10^5-10^8$ GeV. However, conventional SL (unflavoured) requires an unnaturally small soft supersymmetry(SUSY)-breaking bilinear $B \ll \mathcal{O}({\rm TeV})$ coupling for successful leptogenesis. On the other hand, in this regime, the interactions mediated by $τ$, $μ$ (and even $e$) charged lepton Yukawa interactions are in equilibrium, making the lepton number asymmetries and the washouts flavour dependent. Hence, it is crucial to take into account the flavour effects. Considering a gen…
The role of spin degrees of freedom in high-energy hadron-hadron and lepton-hadron scattering is reviewed with emphasis on the dominant role of soft, diffractive, non-perturbative effects. Explicit models based on analyticity and Regge-pole theory, including the pomeron trajectory (gluon exchange in the $t$ channel) are discussed. We argue that there is a single, universal pomeron in Nature, manifest as relatively "soft" or "hard", depending on the kinematics considered. Regge trajectories are non-linear, complex functions, predicting a finite number of resonances. Explicit models and fits are…
Soft displaced leptons are representative collider signatures of compressed dark sectors with feeble couplings to the standard model. Prime targets are dark matter scenarios where co-scattering or co-annihilation sets the relic abundance upon freeze-out. At the LHC, searches for soft displaced leptons are challenged by a large background from hadron or tau lepton decays. In this article, we present an analysis tailored for displaced leptons with a low transverse momentum threshold at 20 GeV. Using a neural network, we perform a comprehensive analysis of the event kinematics, including a study …
The notion of U(1) lepton number (which may only be softly broken) is applied to models of dark matter which interacts with leptons. Previous scotogenic models of Majorana or Dirac neutrino mass are shown to be derivable in this framework without additional symmetries. Only complete renormalizable theories are considered. An explicit class of models with $Z_n$ ($n \geq 5$) lepton and dark symmetry for Dirac neutrinos is derived, as well as an example of $Z_3$ dark symmetry.
We study the so-called new minimal supersymmetric SO(10) GUT(NMSGUT) where explicit spontaneous symmetry breaking allows determination of superheavy spectrum and thus threshold corrections to the effective MSSM couplings. This provides a generic mechanism to resolve the long standing super fast proton decay in Susy GUTs. We estimate lepton flavor violation associated with realistic charged fermion and (Type I seesaw) neutrino fit and show compatibility with baryon number and lepton flavour violation limits. We improve NMSGUT fits by including important loop corrections to sparticle spectra. Ou…

We propose a left-right symmetric framework with universal seesaw mechanism for the generation of masses of the Standard Model quarks and leptons. Heavy vector-like singlet quarks and leptons are required for generation of Standard Model-like quark and lepton masses through seesaw mechanism. A softly broken $Z_2$ symmetry distinguishes the lepton sector and the quark sector of the model. This leads to the presence of some lepton-specific interactions that can produce unique collider signatures which can be explored at the current Large Hadron Collider run and also future colliders.
We consider the full Boltzmann equations for standard and soft leptogenesis, instead of the usual integrated Boltzmann equations which assume kinetic equilibrium for all species. Decays and inverse decays may be inefficient for thermalising the heavy-(s)neutrino distribution function, leading to significant deviations from kinetic equilibrium. We analyse the impact of using the full kinetic equations in the case of a previously generated lepton asymmetry, and find that the washout of this initial asymmetry due to the interactions of the right-handed neutrino is larger than when calculated via …
