We consider the optimal coverage problem where a multi-agent network is deployed in an environment with obstacles to maximize a joint event detection probability. The objective function of this problem is non-convex and no global optimum is guaranteed by gradient-based algorithms developed to date. We first show that the objective function is monotone submodular, a class of functions for which a simple greedy algorithm is known to be within 0.63 of the optimal solution. We then derive two tighter lower bounds by exploiting the curvature information (total curvature and elemental curvature) of the objective function. We further show that the tightness of these lower bounds is complementary with respect to the sensing capabilities of the agents. The greedy algorithm solution can be subsequently used as an initial point for a gradient-based algorithm to obtain solutions even closer to the global optimum. Simulation results show that this approach leads to significantly better performance relative to previously used algorithms.
We consider the control of decentralized learning dynamics for agents in an anti-coordination network game. In the anti-coordination network game, there is a preferred action in the absence of neighbors' actions, and the utility an agent receives from the preferred action decreases as more of its neighbors select the preferred action, potentially causing the agent to select a less desirable action. The decentralized dynamics that is based on the iterated elimination of dominated strategies converge for the considered game. Given a convergent action profile, we measure anti-coordination by the …
We introduce a novel approach to reduce the computational effort of solving mixed-integer convex chance constrained programs through the scenario approach. Instead of reducing the number of required scenarios, we directly minimize the computational cost of the scenario program. We exploit the problem structure by efficiently partitioning the constraint function and considering a multiple chance constrained program that gives the same probabilistic guarantees as the original single chance constrained problem. We formulate the problem of finding the optimal partition, a partition achieving the l…
We study the problem of maximizing a submodular function, subject to a cardinality constraint, with a set of agents communicating over a connected graph. We propose a distributed greedy algorithm that allows all the agents to converge to a near-optimal solution to the global maximization problem using only local information and communication with neighbors in the graph. The near-optimal solution approaches the (1-1/e) approximation of the optimal solution to the global maximization problem with an additive factor that depends on the number of communication steps in the algorithm. We then analy…
A k-order coverage control problem is studied where a network of agents must deploy over a desired area. The objective is to deploy all the agents in a decentralized manner such that a certain coverage performance metric of the network is maximized. Unlike many prior works that consider multi-agent deployment, we explicitly consider applications where more than one agent may be required to service an event that randomly occurs anywhere in the domain. The proposed method ensures the distributed agents autonomously cover the area while simultaneously relaxing the requirement of constant communic…
We consider the problem of determining the optimal composition of a heterogeneous multi-agent team for coverage problems by including costs associated with different agents and subject to an upper bound on the maximal allowable number of agents. We formulate a resource allocation problem without introducing additional non-convexities to the original problem. We develop a distributed Projected Gradient Ascent (PGA) algorithm to solve the optimal team composition problem. To deal with non-convexity, we initialize the algorithm using a greedy method and exploit the submodularity and curvature pro…

A multi-agent coverage problem is considered with energy-constrained agents. The objective of this paper is to compare the coverage performance between centralized and decentralized approaches. To this end, a near-optimal centralized coverage control method is developed under energy depletion and repletion constraints. The optimal coverage formation corresponds to the locations of agents where the coverage performance is maximized. The optimal charging formation corresponds to the locations of agents with one agent fixed at the charging station and the remaining agents maximizing the coverage …

This paper addresses the sweep coverage problem of multi-agent systems in uncertain regions. A new formulation of distributed sweep coverage is proposed to cooperatively complete the workload in the uncertain region. Specifically, each agent takes part in partitioning the whole region while sweeping its own subregion. In addition, the partition operation is carried out to balance the workload in subregions. The trajectories of partition points of agents form the boundaries between adjacent sub-regions. Moreover, it is proved that multi-agent system with the proposed control algorithm is input-…
In multi-agent coverage control problems, agents navigate their environment to reach locations that maximize the coverage of some density. In practice, the density is rarely known $\textit{a priori}$, further complicating the original NP-hard problem. Moreover, in many applications, agents cannot visit arbitrary locations due to $\textit{a priori}$ unknown safety constraints. In this paper, we aim to efficiently learn the density to approximately solve the coverage problem while preserving the agents' safety. We first propose a conditionally linear submodular coverage function that facilitates…

This paper addresses the coverage control problem of multi-agent systems in the uncertain environment. With the aid of Voronoi partition, a distributed coverage control formulation of multi-agent system is proposed to complete the workload in uncertain environments. Driven by the gradient of thermal field, each agent is able to move around for clearing the workload on its own subregion. Theoretical analysis is conducted to ensure the completion of workload in finite time. Finally, numerical simulations are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed coverage con…
This paper presents a theoretical framework for the design and analysis of gradient descent-based algorithms for coverage control tasks involving robot swarms. We adopt a multiscale approach to analysis and design to ensure consistency of the algorithms in the large-scale limit. First, we represent the macroscopic configuration of the swarm as a probability measure and formulate the macroscopic coverage task as the minimization of a convex objective function over probability measures. We then construct a macroscopic dynamics for swarm coverage, which takes the form of a proximal descent scheme…
It is always a challenging task to service sudden events in non-convex and uncertain environments, and multi-agent coverage control provides a powerful theoretical framework to investigate the deployment problem of mobile robotic networks for minimizing the cost of handling random events. Inspired by the divide-and-conquer methodology, this paper proposes a novel coverage formulation to control multi-agent systems in the non-convex region while equalizing the workload among subregions. Thereby, a distributed coverage controller is designed to drive each agent towards the desired configurations…
This paper presents a distributed multi-layer ring barrier coverage algorithm. In order to achieve single-layer ring barrier coverage, a distributed single-layer ring barrier coverage algorithm that maximises the probability of monitoring is proposed. Considering the security risks of single-layer barrier coverage, a distributed adjustment mechanism between multiple layers of barriers is designed and combined with the single-layer ring barrier coverage algorithm to propose a distributed multi-layer ring barrier coverage algorithm. Furthermore, we present a theoretical analysis of the proposed …
Future applications in environmental monitoring, delivery of services and transportation of goods motivate the study of deployment and partitioning tasks for groups of autonomous mobile agents. These tasks are achieved by recent coverage algorithms, based upon the classic methods by Lloyd. These algorithms however rely upon critical requirements on the communication network: information is exchanged synchronously among all agents and long-range communication is sometimes required. This work proposes novel coverage algorithms that require only gossip communication, i.e., asynchronous, pairwise,…
This paper re-visits a multi-agent deployment problem where agents are restricted from requesting information from other agents as well as sending acknowledgments when information is received. These communication constraints relax the assumptions of instantaneous communication and synchronous actions by agents (request and response actions). In this paper, we propose a fully asynchronous communication aware solution to the multi-agent deployment problem that uses an event-triggered broadcasting strategy. Unlike all existing triggered solutions, our event-triggered broadcasting algorithm relies…
This paper presents coordination algorithms for groups of mobile agents performing deployment and coverage tasks. As an important modeling constraint, we assume that each mobile agent has a limited sensing/communication radius. Based on the geometry of Voronoi partitions and proximity graphs, we analyze a class of aggregate objective functions and propose coverage algorithms in continuous and discrete time. These algorithms have convergence guarantees and are spatially distributed with respect to appropriate proximity graphs. Numerical simulations illustrate the results.

We propose distributed algorithms to automatically deploy a group of robotic agents and provide coverage of a discretized environment represented by a graph. The classic Lloyd approach to coverage optimization involves separate centering and partitioning steps and converges to the set of centroidal Voronoi partitions. In this work we present a novel graph coverage algorithm which achieves better performance without this separation while requiring only pairwise ``gossip'' communication between agents. Our new algorithm provably converges to an element of the set of pairwise-optimal partitions, …
