Approximate solutions of linear and nonlinear integral equations using methods related to an interpolatory projection involve many integrals which need to be evaluated using a numerical quadrature formula. In this paper, we consider discrete versions of the modified projection method and of the iterated modified projection methodfor solution of a Urysohn integral equation with a smooth kernel. For $r \geq 1,$ a space of piecewise polynomials of degree less than or equal to r - 1 with respect to an uniform partition is chosen to be the approximating space and the projection is chosen to be the interpolatory projection at r Gauss points. The orders of convergence which we obtain for these discrete versions indicate the choice of numerical quadrature which preserves the orders of convergence. Numerical results are given for a specific example.
In the present paper we consider discrete versions of the modified projection methods for solving a Urysohn integral equation with a kernel of the type of Green's function. For $r \geq 0,$ a space of piecewise polynomials of degree $\leq r $ with respect to an uniform partition is chosen to be the approximating space. We define a discrete orthogonal projection onto this space and replace the Urysohn integral operator by a Nyström approximation. The order of convergence which we obtain for the discrete version indicates the choice of numerical quadrature which preserves the orders of convergenc…
We consider a Urysohn integral operator $\mathcal{K}$ with kernel of the type of Green's function. For $r \geq 1$, a space of piecewise polynomials of degree $\leq r-1 $ with respect to a uniform partition is chosen to be the approximating space and the projection is chosen to be the orthogonal projection. Iterated Galerkin method is applied to the integral equation $x - \mathcal{K}(x) = f$. It is known that the order of convergence of the iterated Galerkin solution is $r+2$ and, at the above partition points it is $2r$. We obtain an asymptotic expansion of the iterated Galerkin solution at th…
Approximate solutions of Urysohn integral equations using projection methods involve integrals which need to be evaluated using a numerical quadrature formula. It gives rise to the discrete versions of the projection methods. For $r \geq 1,$ a space of piece-wise polynomials of degree $\leq r - 1$ with respect to an uniform partition is chosen to be the approximating space and the projection is chosen to be the interpolatory projection at $r$ Gauss points. Asymptotic expansion for the iterated modified projection solution is available in literature. In this paper, we obtain an asymptotic expan…
The paper is devoted to the solution of a weighted nonlinear least-squares problem for low-rank signal estimation, which is related to Hankel structured low-rank approximation problems. A modified weighted Gauss-Newton method, which uses projecting on the image space of the signal, is proposed to solve this problem. The advantage of the proposed method is the possibility of its numerically stable and fast implementation. For a weight matrix, which corresponds to an autoregressive process of order $p$, the computational cost of iterations is $O(N r^2 + N p^2 + r N \log N)$, where $N$ is the tim…
Algebraic multigrid (AMG) coarse spaces are commonly constructed so that they exhibit the so-called weak approximation (WAP) property which is necessary and sufficient condition for uniform two-grid convergence. This paper studies a modification of such coarse spaces so that the modified ones provide approximation in energy norm. Our modification is based on the projection in energy norm onto an orthogonal complement of original coarse space. This generally leads to dense modified coarse space matrices which is hence computationally infeasible. To remedy this, based on the fact that the projec…

We continue the work of [Camano, Lackner, Monk, SIAM J. Math. Anal., Vol. 49, No. 6, pp. 4376-4401 (2017)] on electromagnetic Stekloff eigenvalues. The authors recognized that in general the eigenvalues due not correspond to the spectrum of a compact operator and hence proposed a modified eigenvalue problem with the desired properties. The present article considers the original and the modified electromagnetic Stekloff eigenvalue problem. We cast the problems as eigenvalue problem for a holomorphic operator function $A(\cdot)$. We construct a "test function operator function" $T(\cdot)$ so tha…

In this paper, we propose and analyze a fully discrete finite element projection method for the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations. A modified Crank--Nicolson method and the Galerkin finite element method are used to discretize the model in time and space, respectively, and appropriate semi-implicit treatments are applied to the fluid convection term and two coupling terms. These semi-implicit approximations result in a linear system with variable coefficients for which the unique solvability can be proved theoretically. In addition, we use a second-order decoupling projection method of the V…

In this paper, we propose and analyze a temporally second-order accurate, fully discrete finite element method for the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations. A modified Crank--Nicolson method is used to discretize the model and appropriate semi-implicit treatments are applied to the fluid convection term and two coupling terms. These semi-implicit approximations result in a linear system with variable coefficients for which the unique solvability can be proved theoretically. In addition, we use a decoupling projection method of the Van Kan type \cite{vankan1986} in the Stokes solver, which compu…
This paper is concerned with numerical analysis of two fully discrete Chorin-type projection methods for the stochastic Stokes equations with general non-solenoidal multiplicative noise. The first scheme is the standard Chorin scheme and the second one is a modified Chorin scheme which is designed by employing the Helmholtz decomposition on the noise function at each time step to produce a projected divergence-free noise and a "pseudo pressure" after combining the original pressure and the curl-free part of the decomposition. Optimal order rates of the convergence are proved for both velocity …
The work aims to stabilize the unstable index-1 descriptor systems by Riccati-based feedback stabilization via a modified form of Iterative Rational Krylov Algorithm (IRKA), which is a bi-tangential interpolation-based technique. In the basic IRKA, for the stable systems the Reduced Order Models (ROMs) can be found conveniently, but it is unsuitable for the unstable ones. In the proposed technique, the initial feedback is implemented within the construction of the projectors of the IRKA approach. The solution of the Riccati equation is estimated from the ROM achieved by IRKA and hence the low-…
