Rasmussen invariant, Slice-Bennequin inequality, and sliceness of knots

We use recently introduced Rasmussen invariant to find knots that are topologically locally-flatly slice but not smoothly slice. We note that this invariant can be used to give a combinatorial proof of the slice-Bennequin inequality. Finally, we compute the Rasmussen invariant for quasipositive knots and show that most of our examples of non-slice knots are not quasipositive and, to the best of our knowledge, were previously unknown.

On Bennequin type inequalities for links in tight contact 3-manifolds

We prove that a version of the Thurston-Bennequin inequality holds for Legendrian and transverse links in a rational homology contact 3-sphere $(M,ξ)$, whenever $ξ$ is tight. More specifically, we show that the self-linking number of a transverse link $T$ in $(M,ξ)$, such that the boundary of its tubular neighbourhood consists of incompressible tori, is bounded by the Thurston norm $||T||_T$ of $T$. Bennequin type inequalities in lens spaces

We give criteria for an invariant of lens space links to bound the maximal self-linking number in certain tight contact lens spaces. As a corollary we extend the Franks-Williams-Morton inequality to the setting of lens spaces.

On Legendrian knots and polynomial invariants

It is proved in this note that the analogues of the Bennequin inequality which provide an upper bound for the Bennequin invariant of a Legendrian knot in the standard contact three dimensional space in terms of the lower degree in the framing variable of the HOMFLY and the Kauffman polynomials are not sharp. Furthermore, the relationships between these restrictions on the range of the Bennequin invariant are investigated, which leads to a new simple proof of the inequality involving the Kauffman polynomial.

A note on generalized Thurston--Bennequin inequalities

We give a generalized Thurston--Bennequin-type inequality for links in $S^3$ using a Bauer--Furuta-type invariant for 4-manifolds with contact boundary. As a special case, we also give an adjunction inequality for smoothly embedded orientable surfaces with negative intersection in a closed oriented smooth 4-manifold whose non-equivariant Bauer--Furuta invariant is non-zero.

The Khovanov-Rozansky Cohomology and Bennequin Inequalities

We review Bennequin type inequalities established using various versions of the Khovanov-Rozansky cohomology. Then we give a new proof of a Bennequin type inequality established by the author, and derive new Bennequin type inequalities for knots using Gornik's version of the Khovanov-Rozansky cohomology, which generalize those established by Shumakovitch, Plamenevskaya and Kawamura using the Rasmussen invariant.

Computations of the Ozsvath-Szabo knot concordance invariant

Ozsvath and Szabo have defined a knot concordance invariant tau that bounds the 4-ball genus of a knot. Here we discuss shortcuts to its computation. We include examples of Alexander polynomial one knots for which the invariant is nontrivial, including all iterated untwisted positive doubles of knots with nonnegative Thurston-Bennequin number, such as the trefoil, and explicit computations for several 10 crossing knots. We also note that a new proof of the Slice-Bennequin Inequality quickly follows from these techniques.

Rational linking and contact geometry

In the note we study Legendrian and transverse knots in rationally null-homologous knot types. In particular we generalize the standard definitions of self-linking number, Thurston-Bennequin invariant and rotation number. We then prove a version of Bennequin's inequality for these knots and classify precisely when the Bennequin bound is sharp for fibered knot types. An adjunction inequality for the Bauer-Furuta type invariants, with applications to sliceness and 4-manifold topology

Our main result gives an adjunction inequality for embedded surfaces in certain $4$-manifolds with contact boundary under a non-vanishing assumption on the Bauer--Furuta type invariants. Using this, we give infinitely many knots in $S^3$ that are not smoothly H-slice (that is, bounding a null-homologous disk) in many $4$-manifolds but they are topologically H-slice. In particular, we give such knots in the boundaries of the punctured elliptic surfaces $E(2n)$. Sharpness of the Morton-Franks-Williams inequality for positive knots and links

We provide a combinatorial characterisation of positive diagrams satisfying the equality in the Morton-Franks-Williams bound for the degrees of the HOMFLY-PT polynomial. This characterisation allows generating with relative ease examples of diagrams realizing the crossing number, the braid index, and the maximal self-linking number. Besides, we suggest a conjecture concerning the sharpness of the Morton-Franks-Williams inequality for strongly quasipositive links.
