Binarization plays a key role in the automatic information retrieval from document images. This process is usually performed in the first stages of documents analysis systems, and serves as a basis for subsequent steps. Hence it has to be robust in order to allow the full analysis workflow to be successful. Several methods for document image binarization have been proposed so far, most of which are based on hand-crafted image processing strategies. Recently, Convolutional Neural Networks have shown an amazing performance in many disparate duties related to computer vision. In this paper we discuss the use of convolutional auto-encoders devoted to learning an end-to-end map from an input image to its selectional output, in which activations indicate the likelihood of pixels to be either foreground or background. Once trained, documents can therefore be binarized by parsing them through the model and applying a threshold. This approach has proven to outperform existing binarization strategies in a number of document domains.
Document image binarization is often a challenging task due to various forms of degradation. Although there exist several binarization techniques in literature, the binarized image is typically sensitive to control parameter settings of the employed technique. This paper presents an automatic document image binarization algorithm to segment the text from heavily degraded document images. The proposed technique uses a two band-pass filtering approach for background noise removal, and Bayesian optimization for automatic hyperparameter selection for optimal results. The effectiveness of the propo…
The paper presents some aspects of the (gray level) image binarization methods used in artificial vision systems. It is introduced a new approach of gray level image binarization for artificial vision systems dedicated to industrial automation temporal thresholding. In the first part of the paper are extracted some limitations of using the global optimum thresholding in gray level image binarization. In the second part of this paper are presented some aspects of the dynamic optimum thresholding method for gray level image binarization. Starting from classic methods of global and dynamic optima…
In recent years, a large number of binarization methods have been developed, with varying performance generalization and strength against different benchmarks. In this work, to leverage on these methods, an ensemble of experts (EoE) framework is introduced, to efficiently combine the outputs of various methods. The proposed framework offers a new selection process of the binarization methods, which are actually the experts in the ensemble, by introducing three concepts: confidentness, endorsement and schools of experts. The framework, which is highly objective, is built based on two general pr…

Automatic License Plate Recognition system is a challenging area of research now-a-days and binarization is an integral and most important part of it. In case of a real life scenario, most of existing methods fail to properly binarize the image of a vehicle in a congested road, captured through a CCD camera. In the current work we have applied histogram equalization technique over the complete image and also over different hierarchy of image partitioning. A novel scheme is formulated for giving the membership value to each pixel for each hierarchy of histogram equalization. Then the image is b…
Using content-based binary codes to tag digital images has emerged as a promising retrieval technology. Recently, Radon barcodes (RBCs) have been introduced as a new binary descriptor for image search. RBCs are generated by binarization of Radon projections and by assembling them into a vector, namely the barcode. A simple local thresholding has been suggested for binarization. In this paper, we put forward the idea of "autoencoded Radon barcodes". Using images in a training dataset, we autoencode Radon projections to perform binarization on outputs of hidden layers. We employed the mini-batch…
Computation of document image quality metrics often depends upon the availability of a ground truth image corresponding to the document. This limits the applicability of quality metrics in applications such as hyperparameter optimization of image processing algorithms that operate on-the-fly on unseen documents. This work proposes the use of surrogate models to learn the behavior of a given document quality metric on existing datasets where ground truth images are available. The trained surrogate model can later be used to predict the metric value on previously unseen document images without r…

Binary Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have significantly reduced the number of arithmetic operations and the size of memory storage needed for CNNs, which makes their deployment on mobile and embedded systems more feasible. However, the CNN architecture after binarizing requires to be redesigned and refined significantly due to two reasons: 1. the large accumulation error of binarization in the forward propagation, and 2. the severe gradient mismatch problem of binarization in the backward propagation. Even though the substantial effort has been invested in designing architectures for si…
Numerous methods have been proposed to transform color and grayscale images to their single bit-per-pixel binary counterparts. Commonly, the goal is to enhance specific attributes of the original image to make it more amenable for analysis. However, when the resulting binarized image is intended for human viewing, aesthetics must also be considered. Binarization techniques, such as half-toning, stippling, and hatching, have been widely used for modeling the original image's intensity profile. We present an automated method to transform an image to a set of binary textures that represent not on…

Existing video hash functions are built on three isolated stages: frame pooling, relaxed learning, and binarization, which have not adequately explored the temporal order of video frames in a joint binary optimization model, resulting in severe information loss. In this paper, we propose a novel unsupervised video hashing framework dubbed Self-Supervised Video Hashing (SSVH), that is able to capture the temporal nature of videos in an end-to-end learning-to-hash fashion. We specifically address two central problems: 1) how to design an encoder-decoder architecture to generate binary codes for …

This paper shows the application of autonomous Crater Detection using the U-Net, a Fully-Convolutional Neural Network, on Ceres. The U-Net is trained on optical images of the Moon Global Morphology Mosaic based on data collected by the LRO and manual crater catalogues. The Moon-trained network will be tested on Dawn optical images of Ceres: this task is accomplished by means of a Transfer Learning (TL) approach. The trained model has been fine-tuned using 100, 500 and 1000 additional images of Ceres. The test performance was measured on 350 never before seen images, reaching a testing accuracy…

Deep hashing has shown promising results in image retrieval and recognition. Despite its success, most existing deep hashing approaches are rather similar: either multi-layer perceptron or CNN is applied to extract image feature, followed by different binarization activation functions such as sigmoid, tanh or autoencoder to generate binary code. In this work, we introduce a novel decision-making approach for deep supervised hashing. We formulate the hashing problem as travelling across the vertices in the binary code space, and learn a deep Q-network with a novel label embedding reward defined…
Digitized documents such as scientific articles, tax forms, invoices, contract papers, historic texts are widely used nowadays. These document images could be degraded or damaged due to various reasons including poor lighting conditions, shadow, distortions like noise and blur, aging, ink stain, bleed-through, watermark, stamp, etc. Document image enhancement plays a crucial role as a pre-processing step in many automated document analysis and recognition tasks such as character recognition. With recent advances in deep learning, many methods are proposed to enhance the quality of these docume…

Drone imagery is increasingly used in automated inspection for infrastructure surface defects, especially in hazardous or unreachable environments. In machine vision, the key to crack detection rests with robust and accurate algorithms for image processing. To this end, this paper proposes a deep learning approach using hierarchical convolutional neural networks with feature preservation (HCNNFP) and an intercontrast iterative thresholding algorithm for image binarization. First, a set of branch networks is proposed, wherein the output of previous convolutional blocks is half-sizedly concatena…
Automatic teeth segmentation in panoramic x-ray images is an important research subject of the image analysis in dentistry. In this study, we propose a post-processing stage to obtain a segmentation map in which the objects in the image are separated, and apply this technique to tooth instance segmentation with U-Net network. The post-processing consists of grayscale morphological and filtering operations, which are applied to the sigmoid output of the network before binarization. A dice overlap score of 95.4 - 0.3% is obtained in overall teeth segmentation. The proposed post-processing stages…
